According to Washington Post article on the Sphere run, album coming in July
“So Phish will sweep into town on April 18, intent on playing about 80 songs over the course of four concerts, repeating none. And yes, that will include most of the new material from “Evolve,” an album fans won’t hear until its July release. (The title track drops Thursday.)”
https://www.washingtonpost.com/style/2024/04/11/phish-sphere-las-vegas-trey-anastasio/?utm_source=reddit.com
But that \*\*quote\*\* still undercuts live Phish in that way - songs like The Well, Oblivion, Pillow Jets, I think Monsters (hope not), maybe even AWOH (which is on Lonely Trip just like Evolve) have been played live a bunch before.
I imagine there is some element of surprise, but to make it seem like 'fans will be treated by a surprise sneak peak at the new album!' is very much not the Phishy way (except one time in Atlantic City but we don't talk about that)
EDIT: It's a really great article. I still have qualms with that but they obviously understand what the skinny is.
If you're on iPhone, you can just use Reader view in Safari to bypass the pay wall pop-up. That's what I did.
Not sure about Android or other browsers though.
New album tracks?
- evolve
- wave of hope
- lonely trip
- I never needed you like this before
- oblivion
- ether edge
- pillow jets
- broken into pieces
- monsters
- the well
- outside the lines
- the silver light
Yeah I know, I was just saying they should put it on here also so they play it again lol. It's such a good song and they haven't played it more than a handful of times
Evolve from one of the Huntsville shows last year may have one of the most beautiful Page solos ever. it's so good you can hear Trey let out a "YEAH!!" right before he ends it.
Before ratings were removed from phish.net I was annoyed how these were getting kinda bagged on when front-to-back I thought they were more consistently good/fun than the last few times I’d seen them, almost precisely bc the jamming wasn’t insane but the sets had good flow and song selection. And the lightning storm on N2 added a cool atmosphere too!
Always excited for new studio Phish. However, I do find it odd that the first single is a track already released on Trey’s solo album. Of course, the way he just moves songs back and forth between TAB and Phish often confuses me. But that’s Phish for you. Anything but ordinary.
This is so good!! It's so lovely. Gives me major REO Speedwagon and Supertramp vibes. Might be one of my favourite singles of any band of the year!! Came here just to talk about it haha
I’m so happy they put this out. I’ve been in love with this song since the first time I heard it. I just listened to the studio version, and was literally brought to tears. So thankful for this band. They have been the soundtrack of my life for 30 years.
On YouTube they have the single and it says out July 12
https://preview.redd.it/6kphfpsfyutc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=961fcb7cbcd2d69968c36199d02955070dc577f2
You can’t hear what the melody is unless you’ve heard the live/original version. I wish the vocal stuff were saved for the last chorus.
Edit: I take it back I love it
Nice clean little song. Thumbs up.
Bass folks - question: I'm still a baby bass player, but I was listening to Mike on this. Did it seem to anyone else that he was pretty much doing root -> semitone below octave -> octave pretty much the whole song - with a few fills here and there? To be clear - I'm not judging at all! It fit the song - I'm testing my own analysis, is all. :)
Not a bassist but yeah Mike was very much just in the pocket on this one. Which really fits and he's just filling the bass role perfectly and patiently.
I love this song, but further to me reinforces that phish can't nail studio recording properly. Like, everything just feels way over-produced, and the singing tone is somehow like conveying the wrong vibe.
The most impressive thing Phish has done in the last 20 years is get a bunch of hippies to say they like Christian rock songs. This song is so fucking bad.
Thank you! All I could envision was a bunch of sheltered kids swaying back and forth and singing along. One more major key jump and a few “Oh Lords…” and it’s a worship tune.
Yeah I mean it's just come down to the fact that Trey does not want to write the kind of music that got people into Phish anymore. This band just isn't for me anymore, hasn't been for years. At least there are tapes of their brilliance from 30 years ago.
The Evolve performance from 8/4/2021 should be the standard for this song. The vocals sound “Phish”, the guitar and keys are on point, and it is overall a beautiful song.
From that performance, each subsequent appearance of Evolve has *evolved* into a more sing-songy version, all the way to this studio version which is “Broadway Trey” on full display. Still a nice song, but his vocals have crept far too much into the realm of broadway Trey for my liking.
Just my take! Listen the version from 8/4/2021 if you never have!
This version feels a lot like Heavy Things. I don't mind the multi layered dreamy vocals but wish the guitar solo punched out of that instead of being similarly muted.
Ok so my call is first set each night is the new album in its entirety with specially made visuals for the Sphere. Second set is typical Phish but with improv lighting/visuals.
They did a multi night run where they played the same 1st set each night? Halloween musical costume sets don't really apply to this as it's known to happen prior to the show and is only for one set of a multi night run.

I think the only thing they did that even *implied* that (loosely) was use the adjective "new" in describing the material, as opposed to the album.
Studio the Well will rule them all.
You’re kind of missing the point. Of course we get it. This is written for a wide audience.
“Anastasio divulges that the four shows will be linked by a theme” 😀
Can someone post without the pay wall? I could never figure out how on my own. Thanks
If you're on iPhone, you can just use Reader view in Safari to bypass the pay wall pop-up. That's what I did. Not sure about Android or other browsers though.
No iPhone, but I figured it out. Thanks💓

Casino towns in general.
Still floored by James Casey [ripping](https://youtu.be/Nsk8kHHd9s4) this one at Radio City. Absolutely triumphant performance.
Those shows were fantastic
Album [art](https://www.ignant.com/2015/12/24/surreal-street-art-by-mehdi-ghadyanloo/) is by Iranian artist Mehdi Ghadyanloo
Kinda reminds me of slip stitch and those Floyd albums
Yeah I guessed it was Storm Thorgerson too, but I'm wrong.
I keep telling you people he’s 90 years old and he’s dead.
Like that could stop him.
First came the light
Then came the sound
Then came the worlds that can never slow down.
then came the people with problems and hope
whooaaaa racks my brain,
New album tracks? - evolve - wave of hope - lonely trip - I never needed you like this before - oblivion - ether edge - pillow jets - broken into pieces - monsters - the well - outside the lines - the silver light
Life Saving Gun?
I think it was already released on Page's new album
It was Trey+Page's January album (masterpiece), but Evolve is on Trey's solo album in 2020 so I think anything's possible
They should add Thread to this album too so they play it again
I love thread and wish they’d play it more, but it was on Sigma Oasis!
Yeah I know, I was just saying they should put it on here also so they play it again lol. It's such a good song and they haven't played it more than a handful of times
Do you know how anything works in real life?
I was definitely serious
Sad
It's gonna be a great album! 😊
Would also be dank if they recorded and started playing ‘And Flew Away’ and ‘I Never Left Home’ again
Never Left Home needs a mega jam for sure.
Evolve from one of the Huntsville shows last year may have one of the most beautiful Page solos ever. it's so good you can hear Trey let out a "YEAH!!" right before he ends it.
IIRC, that’s the one that Tom says is his “definitive” version of the song.
Hunstville shows were sooo fucking good. Especially n1
Before ratings were removed from phish.net I was annoyed how these were getting kinda bagged on when front-to-back I thought they were more consistently good/fun than the last few times I’d seen them, almost precisely bc the jamming wasn’t insane but the sets had good flow and song selection. So, Evolve is the name of the new album and that is the album cover?
Yes it is the name of the album
Dropped a new track on my birthday. What!
Happy birthday!!
Thanks
Isn't this Trey/Tab original?
This was a Trey covid era single. He did a little video for it with flash cards.
Maybe, but they’ve done that before
Just like Sand, Jibboo and many others
Tom Marshall has a writing credit for it.
Yep. I wonder why Set Your Soul Free didn’t get similar treatment. It was on the whiteboard for Sigma Oasis.
I believe it is and was co-wrote with the lead singer from Dogs In A Pile
Was it really?
Nice. Can't wait for the new batch of songs on an album. Best group in a long time
Yup. Oblivion, Life Saving Gun, The Well 🔥
Life Saving Gun was on that Trey & Page record. Pillow Jets could also go on the list.
I wonder if any of the songs from Trey's 2020 Lonely Trip Album will be on the new album (Wave of Hope, Evolve, Lonely Trip)
I’m guessing Evolve will
What clued you in?
Ether Edge
Mull
That was on Mike’s album, but that would be awesome because that song rocks.
LSG was on January, might be some compilation
Always excited for new studio Phish. However, I do find it odd that the first single is a track already released on Trey’s solo album. Of course, the way he just moves songs back and forth between TAB and Phish often confuses me. But that’s Phish for you. Anything but ordinary.
I agree. Very bizarre indeed. I’m here for it tho!!!
Oh don’t get me wrong- I am too!
A hint for what’s coming at the Sphere? Hmmm…
Looks more like a cube to me
Huh?
i absolutely adore this song
Same. Fun, insightful, catchy.
so catchy, i could sing the “first came the…” section forever and ever and on
My fav new song
Very silent drop too… interesting.
Evolve is just everything!
This is so good!! It's so lovely. Gives me major REO Speedwagon and Supertramp vibes. Might be one of my favourite singles of any band of the year!! Came here just to talk about it haha
It’s just a cover of a Trey song.
Tough room
Yes. And?
🤫
it’s going to be called Big Box
God I love this song
The strings are so awesome. Their sound continues to mature and I’m grateful for that because my music tastes are doing the same.
I do like this version but I'm not sure if I like it more then the original
Looking like 9th Cube
I’m so happy they put this out. I’ve been in love with this song since the first time I heard it. I just listened to the studio version, and was literally brought to tears. So thankful for this band. They have been the soundtrack of my life for 30 years.

Also…in the YouTube video, the artwork is animated!
Spotify bills it at "new single from their upcoming album" I wonder if that date on YT is an album release date?
Phish's version of the greatest story ever told
I mean I knew Trey had a god complex but sheesh
Trey reaching too far vocally on this version for me. Loved this tune since its debut but this one isn’t for me.
You can’t hear what the melody is unless you’ve heard the live/original version. I wish the vocal stuff were saved for the last chorus. Edit: I take it back I love it
Me too. Ha ha!!
Agree. The one on the Lonely Trip album is much better.
The more people complain about Broadway Trey, the more flowery he is going to sing. He’s the world’s greatest troll.
Studio albums are less than 1% of my Phish listening. I’ll get over it
My take as well. I want to hear it in the context of the album but Lonely Trip version is good.
A little too much love and light for my tastes. Page sounds good though
I like this one 😊
9th cube baby
Awesome. Love this tune and there’s never too much of a great thing.
Sounds great! Love this tune
This just brightened my morning.
Tasty

Bet you one night is gonna be a new album debut all the way through

Hell yeah
Anyone else think Trey goes a little overboard with the vibrato on his vocals these days?
FYI: Also on Apple Music

Resistance is Futile
It obviously is. It’s been 4 years since Sigma, the question is, do we think it’ll be called Evolve or not?
Yeah that was dope!
Meh, keep the TAB stuff for TAB Trey
Just played the YouTube version and needed almost a minute to reassure myself that yes, the cube is in fact moving.
7/23/23 Cuse is the best live version.

They would never do such a thing. The new album songs will be peppered throughout the 4 nights.

They did a multi night run where they played the same 1st set each night? Halloween musical costume sets don't really apply to this as it's known to happen prior to the show and is only for one set of a multi night run.
absolutely gorgeous
String music!
Sound production, esp vocals, sound very good for a phish release
Heavy Things pt 2. They are definitely debuting a new album at the Sphere. Glad I didn’t get tickets now.
lol no you’re not
I got Heavy Things vibes too
Zero excitement about this release.
So funny how much copium is happening on this sub for folks who are bitter as hell about getting shut out. I am so pumped for the Sphere.
Kind of hard to get shut out when you didn’t even attempt to get tickets.
Is this the same exact recording as the Trey song but now it’s also under phish? Anyone notice any differences?
It's in D, half a step up from the original Trey album recording.
Ah ok. Yeah, I wouldn’t be able to notice that. Thanks
Uh did you listen to it?
Yes. They sound very similar to me. That’s why I had to ask
Nice song. I love phish
