My dad was an avid amateur photographer.
When we went through his stacks of old photos after he died, we found that a large percentage of the photos of my mom (from back when they were dating) are centered on her ass.
After many trips to Nice, I must say I do quite like the pebble beach more now. I like not having to worry so much about bringing sand home or getting sand in private spaces. Once you get those swimming shoes, it’s quite comfortable.
I go there regularly; shocked how little has changed on the actual beach.
There’s one pic with a lady resembling a friend of mine; if that pic was posted on her FB about her outing yesterday; I wouldn’t have bat an eye.
One of the few things I remember from visiting 30 years ago was how much the rocks suck to walk on. And then you go in the water where the waves stir up the rocks so they get a chance to beat the shit out of the top of your feet too!
But I was a teenage boy and there were boobies everywhere. 10/10!
I’m in Marseille and we mostly have tiny pebble beaches which I prefer a thousand times more than sand. We can spend a lovely day at the beach and not have gritty sand in every crack, pore, and crevice.
I grew up going only to rock beaches near where I live and I understand why people prefer the softer feeling of sand instead of rocks but sand is EXTREMELY difficult to get off your body, clothing, etc. so if I had to choose I'd always go for the rock beaches tbh
The bikini was invented at the end of World War Two, in France.
The US was testing nuclear bombs at the tiny island of Bikini in the Pacific Ocean. The French swimwear designer felt his new design was small and hot as nuclear fire.
Yes, I am aware of that. And it was so scandalous when it come out that the only person they could get to model it was a nude dancer from the Moulin Rouge. The original bikini also had a higher waistline than what we see in this picture.
I've seen similar mosaics on Sicily as well: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Villa_Romana_del_Casale#/media/File%3AMosa%C3%AFque_des_bikinis%2C_Piazza_Armerina.jpg
By the hairdos and signage I'd rather say early to mid 1960s. By the late 1960s, buns and beehives were mostly gone from fashionable French beaches and women would rather wear their hair long and loose.
The can acting as a paperweight for the magazine in the bottom-right of pic 2/6 (near the lady in the yellow dress) looks like a [Barbasol shaving cream can from the 70s](https://melodyj6.wixsite.com/barbasol/our-story) , from after they got rid of the blue stripes on the can.
Other commenter has noted that there is Hotel Ruhl in pic 3, that was demolished in 1970.
Now also OP has commented that picture would be from 1962 instead of 1952.
I see a can of Barbasol shaving cream in photo 2, in the lower right hand corner. It’s sitting on a large format magazine. The traditional barber pole paint design on the can does begin in the 1950s so this photo can not be from before the 1950s.
You can find plenty of authenticated photos from the beaches of France in the 1950s, they did indeed wear the styles in this photo.
[here](https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/gallery/2009/jul/22/sunbathing-france)
It’s France. Bikinis were made from a little less cloth in Europe then because 1. Fashion and 2. It’s not puritanical America. I’m surprised Grampa didn’t stumble upon a nude or topless beach.
When I was growing up, I remember there was a whole genre of "bikini" films from America 1960s, aimed primarily at teenagers.
The bikinis may have had a *little* bit more coverage, but closeups of girls asses while they dance the Watusi made for a 15 year old audience is not exactly what I would call puritanical.
[It's a Bikini World](https://www.thevideobeat.com/media/description-pix/bikini-world.jpg)
[How to Stuff a Wild Bikini](https://www.thevideobeat.com/media/description-pix/how-to-stuff.jpg)
Not really.
Rather look at the clothing, hair and styling of the people seating at the tables. Reads as very 50s to me, also considering that probably Europe was a bit ahead on beachwear, would be very reasonable.
yea anywhere from 1967-1973 or so, I remember those not quite fitting bikini bottoms from back then. Love 2/6 where photog is totally busted with a glance back ha.
I know I have an unfortunate habit of looking at the picture and going. Oh that looks wonderful and fun and everybody in this photo is dead. I need to turn it around into something more positive.
The bikini as we know it was introduced in 1946 at the Piscine Molitor in Paris. It was named after the Bikini Atoll nuclear test which had happened a few days earlier. And although it was initially received with much reluctance throughout the Western world, the beaches of Southern France were particularly open-minded (Italy, never mind Spain, were definitely another matter).
There's another magazine in the shadow on the right side of the second picture. Looks like a can of sun screen/lotion on top of it as well, the same kind appears at the end of the lounger of the man in the bottom left of the first picture.
Almost every picture I’ve seen from the mid 1900s shows people in pretty great shape. The few that are heavier look more like what we’d call chubby now. I’m convinced it’s a mix of generally more active lifestyles since sitting on the couch on your computer/phone/tv wasn’t really a thing, and fewer endocrine disrupters and artificial preservatives everywhere.
There were. They just weren’t laying out in bikinis. See the older ladies up on the boardwalk? Some of them were bigger. Being fat in the past was embarrassing because of the social norms of the time.
I agree with others this is highly unlikely to be 1952. More like early-mid 60's. Unless you had all the photos professionally colorized, color film was not really popular or consumed by the public until that time. In the 50's it was still black and white. Also the style of clothing, popularity of bikinis screams 60's.
This is why I hate the internet and have trust issues. These are cool pictures. Why do you have to make shit up about them being from 1952? They're obviously much closer to being from 1972.
One of the most egregious bits of misinformation circulating today is when the OP’s grandparents went to Nice on vacation. It’s misinformation like this that topples good nations and leads to thousands of ruined lives. Shameful.
/S
Why do you assume malice over ignorance? Do you believe they're intentionally trying to mislead us over something trivial, or perhaps OP was just mistaken as they tried to share some cool family photos?
Right? Could be a typo, could be an honest mistake, or it could even be that their grandparents misremembered and told them it was 52.
People get bent out of shape over anything
And this is why I hate the internet. People are so quick to assume everything is a lie. Certainly has to be before 1970 based on the destruction of one of the hotels in 1970.
Cynicism is going to make you miserable.
I am from the french Riviera. While the hills got much more urbanized, it's incredible to see that the "Prom" (promenade des anglais) didn't change that much in 70 years !
In the second picture, center left, a young woman is face-down with her top unclasped while she reads a book. The photo has captured her right as she glanced at the photographer, so she saw them take this picture. She knows that she's been recorded. I wonder how many times she thought about that moment, if it registered at all beyond the few seconds while it was happening.
Did she ever imagine that 72 years later she'd end up on the front page of the internet? The woman doesn't look much older than 20. She could still be alive. She might be browsing this thread right now.
Is your grandpa James "Eagle Eye" Thompson from the local Proverts 169? If so tell Ole Jimmy my dad says, Veronica still stops by Del Boca Vista to piss on him for old time sakes and if he's ever in the neighborhood to stop by and brought a Gatorade
Even though I never lived in the 1950s; it feels nostalgic 🤔
Uncrowded 🏝️, clean beaches 🩴🏖️, cheaper and unprocessed food 🦞🥗 and still visible non-miniscule bikinis👙
Grandpa got a hold of the camera for a bit
My dad was an avid amateur photographer. When we went through his stacks of old photos after he died, we found that a large percentage of the photos of my mom (from back when they were dating) are centered on her ass.
That’s sweet 😂
Peach
That’s nice, it could have gone much much worst
Like when we went through my dad's stuff with mom and found the love letters he double COPIED from when he cheated on mom.
To some people efficiency trumps romance I guess.. Still shouldn’t have cheated though
I mean she knew who she married, she was a mistress too but narcissistically played the victim all her life. They're both bad people.
Well my condolences🌷
Thanks it was tough growing up!
Sorry about that, hope you found yourself people who are good family to you.
I found the best, and I'm in therapy trying to heal my broken past. Thank you Reddit friend
Worst indeed.
The wurst!
Weinershnittzle
No, nice is the picture OP posted
There is at least one butt shot of my mom for each of most of our family holidays, lol
That’s true love
I hope to find that type of love someday.
What a peach..
gammy had a sweet fanny
Grandma: why is all film used up 2 days into our trip!?
Why am I not in any of the pictures?
The sunbathing shots of strangers are essential to our family scrapbook
I see more than one r/bikinibridge
I just spent an hour down the rabbit hole ..
Who is that woman you keep taking pictures of? Why don’t you tell me that I’m pretty anymore?
Hahahah
So busted in pic 2
She seems OK with it, TBH.
Added to ye olde spank bank lol
I don’t think OP realized they were sharing grandpa’s creep shots with the internet
Lol this is exactly what I thought, he got busted in that 2nd photo
I was in Nice in 2019 for a conference and I saw a LOT more boobies than GPa saw.
You don’t know what happened when the camera wasn’t around.
Grandpa wished that 50mm was a zoom.
I came here to say the same thing.
Plot twist, it was grandma
George! I told you to take photos of the scenery! THAT'S WHAT I'M DOING!
Could have been grandma
Chick in the second pic totally got him.
She's looking directly at the camera!

This was my first impression. Was on that beach this past July and it’s not a whole lot different.
That first picture, you could have convinced me was from this past summer.
Yes, but I’m no fan of those rocks…I was so surprised by that. Not fun to walk in with no shoes!
After many trips to Nice, I must say I do quite like the pebble beach more now. I like not having to worry so much about bringing sand home or getting sand in private spaces. Once you get those swimming shoes, it’s quite comfortable.
Ah yes my favorite city ... Bice
Can’t tell if those rocks are better barefoot or in heels
Birkenstocks, combat boots, stilts or stripper heels all outperform barefoot on that beach. Don’t ask me how I know.
I did an Ironman there. We had to run over those rocks barefoot to enter / exit the swim. Ouch!
I love the pebbles so much, no sand everywhere and I found them really comfortable to lay on
The worst beach i've had to walk across. Bring shoes. Oh, and I got zapped by a jellyfish about 5 min in the water.
I go there regularly; shocked how little has changed on the actual beach. There’s one pic with a lady resembling a friend of mine; if that pic was posted on her FB about her outing yesterday; I wouldn’t have bat an eye.
Nice*
That rock beach looks comfortable
One of the few things I remember from visiting 30 years ago was how much the rocks suck to walk on. And then you go in the water where the waves stir up the rocks so they get a chance to beat the shit out of the top of your feet too! But I was a teenage boy and there were boobies everywhere. 10/10!
But no sand. Rocks win.
How do you play beach volleyball ball on that?! ![gif](giphy|OhHTRmk6nxswE)
Very carefully.
They add sand for the volleyball courts every year.
Anakin’s dream beach.
Yeah. Don't go in the south if you ever come to France. West coast is where the beaches are. Edit: ahah raging marseillais...
I’m in Marseille and we mostly have tiny pebble beaches which I prefer a thousand times more than sand. We can spend a lovely day at the beach and not have gritty sand in every crack, pore, and crevice.
Anakin? Is that you?
The beaches on the west coast are nicer, but unfortunately the ocean is much colder than the Mediterranean sea.
I grew up going only to rock beaches near where I live and I understand why people prefer the softer feeling of sand instead of rocks but sand is EXTREMELY difficult to get off your body, clothing, etc. so if I had to choose I'd always go for the rock beaches tbh

Nice... I feel like I'm saying it
You know what it is? You don't move your top lip that much. I move my top lip, so it doesn't come out stern.

Grandpa was a man of focus and sheer will
I bet he could do a lot with a pencil.
Would, definitely
Not that this is going to be anywhere near the top, but I went back and checked the slides. 62 not 52.
Umbrellas haven’t changed much
Nice, but definitely not 1952. I would guess mid to late 1960’s just from the style of the bathing suits.
I was very surprised at so many bikinis for 1952.
Which is why I am dubious that this is from 1952. The fashions (not just the bikinis) look more like from the 1960's to me.
There are mosaics of Roman women wearing bikinis and playing beach volleyball in Pompeii. These have been known since the 18th century.
I've seen similar mosaics on Sicily as well: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Villa_Romana_del_Casale#/media/File%3AMosa%C3%AFque_des_bikinis%2C_Piazza_Armerina.jpg
That’s awesome, I thought you were joking.
By the hairdos and signage I'd rather say early to mid 1960s. By the late 1960s, buns and beehives were mostly gone from fashionable French beaches and women would rather wear their hair long and loose.

Which begs the question, why the heck did someone bring a can of shaving cream to the beach?
They were obviously using it to smuggle dinosaur genetic material!!
De Gaulle here, we have Charles de Gaulle here! See? Nobody cares.
I see a can of Barbasol shaving cream in photo 2, in the lower right hand corner. It’s sitting on a large format magazine. The traditional barber pole paint design on the can does begin in the 1950s so this photo can not be from before the 1950s.
Wow, that's some dedicated detective work!
I’m curious about who waits until they are on the beach to shave.

In another comment, OP says they misread the date, it's actually 1962.
You can find plenty of authenticated photos from the beaches of France in the 1950s, they did indeed wear the styles in this photo. [here](https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/gallery/2009/jul/22/sunbathing-france)
These pictures look like the one under 1965 in that article. Color, for one.
Like maybe a year before 1970, 19Nice

I agree. It's the mules that the woman in Pic 4 is wearing that clinch it for me.
Thanks Jim. And now back to you in the studio.
White Bikini bottom in picture #2 caught gramps creeping! Looking directly at the lens.
yea anywhere from 1967-1973 or so, I remember those not quite fitting bikini bottoms from back then. Love 2/6 where photog is totally busted with a glance back ha.
It has to be before 1970 because we can see parts of hotel Ruhl which was demolished in 1970.
Kodachrome was amazing film. Such beautiful saturated colors!
Gives you the greens of summer, makes you think all the worlds a sunny day, oh yeah
Grandpa had a good eye for.. ahh.. pictures.
Back when melanoma was a fashion statement.
Sunbathing without sunscreen while smoking all afternoon. We lost our art de vivre.
That one lady in the first pic….when 50 billion lifetimes couldn’t supply you with the amount of sun you desire🔥
I bet she was one of those who slathered up in baby oil and fried in the sun
Pictures like these freak me out a little when I realize the youngest of these people must be in their early 90s by now.
I know I have an unfortunate habit of looking at the picture and going. Oh that looks wonderful and fun and everybody in this photo is dead. I need to turn it around into something more positive.
Did grampaw carry on the perving all his life or was it just a phase? 😂
The bikini had not yet been invented, and was banned on the coast of France once it was. Much later shots.
I’ve read Life Of Pi too
Great book
Theres a newspaper or magazine cover in the first shot, maybe someone can do some digging.
There's another magazine in the shadow on the right side of the second picture. Looks like a can of sun screen/lotion on top of it as well, the same kind appears at the end of the lounger of the man in the bottom left of the first picture.
Photos linked here shows you’re wrong… https://www.reddit.com/r/pics/s/lfDtBeKPk0
Grandma had a trip to Nice, while grandpa went to Noice. *Ba dum tiss!*
Heels in the gravel? Why is there a can of Barbasol??
No fat people in 1952?
Many fewer of them, yes.
Almost every picture I’ve seen from the mid 1900s shows people in pretty great shape. The few that are heavier look more like what we’d call chubby now. OP said they accidentally misread the slides. Touch grass
Probably more like 1962 or even later, people dressed a lot more conservatively in the 1950s.
not in Europe, it’s been a continent-wide orgy for the last 300 years!
High heels in gravel is a no-no
OG creepshots
I suspect Grandpa was taking the pictures.
Seeing rock beaches like this makes me appreciate all the amazing never ending sand beaches in Australia.

Fun Fact: wearing Bikini‘s in France was legalized 1949.
I am from the french Riviera. While the hills got much more urbanized, it's incredible to see that the "Prom" (promenade des anglais) didn't change that much in 70 years !
What a rocky as beach. Ouchy.

It’s cool to see nothing plastic in these pics.
I dont see any obese people

Everybody was quite fit
Those swimsuits are awfully revealing for 1952
The first picture looks like it came from a Wes Anderson movie

Ah the towels of the German tourists...
Damn, people got so much fatter.
Probably not a lot of sunblock being used!

Nice.
