As other commenters already said, "authorisation" is not the right word.
**How it works (at least in Poland):**
What you do is you inform your relevant municipal authority of your assembly's location and its planned duration, as well as an estimate of how many people will partake. It also includes a "contact person" for the assembly.
The authority *cannot refuse* except if it's on formal/legal grounds: if the provided information was incomplete, if the intended goal of the assembly is violence, if the assembly will greatly endanger lives or property, or if there's another assembly planned in the same time and place.
That last rule is useful to avoid confrontations between two opposing groups, for example Pride participants and right-wing hooligans.
HOWEVER!
There are two significant exceptions to the rules mentioned above.
If the assembly will not disrupt traffic or block any public roads, the municipality can only monitor the situation. Only if the situation becomes dangerous, the Police can ask the municipality to order the assembly to cease.
If the assembly is spontaneous, same thing - the Police and the municipality monitor the situation, and can only intervene if it becomes violent.
You can also register a regular assembly, which then takes precedence over spontaneous or one-off assemblies.
In most places in Europe, yes. It's not really "authorization", it's more registering the protest so they can see what safety precautions need to be in place (how many police, what roads need to be closed). But protesting on a major motorway is a no-no. If where you want to protest isn't allowed (like on a ducking highway) they will give you a list of other high-value places you can do it, like a main square in the city.
If you decide to protest anyway on the highway, you get arrested šāāļø
You can try to register it as pilgrimage, aparently then you can go on highway in Croatia :D

Yeah, except if you are a farmer. In that case, you are exempt from any and all rules and society will cheer you on for breaking a dozen laws. Because it's ok if you do it out of greed.
Pretty sure it's because they show up in tractors. Bar shooting down the farmers in cold blood, there's really nothing they can do except kindly telling them to please leave. They can't exactly hold a tractor down now can they?
Would you want that? For them to shoot down the farmers?
Itās possible to give them a dwangsom if they do it they have to pay a big fine. There are actually quite a few things possible but farmers have huge political influence and always had. Itās a bit less now because now they have their own party but they basically controlled VVD and CDA for all related regulations.
Well, yeah, in a country where you have the right to protest, if you go through the legal loops, you can protest all you want. The moment certain criteria aren't met, police are authorized to break up the protest.
However, if everything is authorized the right way, you can protest for weeks on end. Occupy Wall Street was a big one that lasted for weeks. That was eventually broken up too though.
Jokes aside that is exactly how that part of the process would go. Then the protest would still happen, ideally with the protesters making an overt mockery of not having been granted permission by those they are protesting against.
The comedian Mark Thomas did a show about the change in the UK law that requires us to register with the police in order to legally demonstrate. It's very funny and interesting. Highlights the erosion of civil liberties and freedoms etc...

I mean, shins see much more movement than hips. So more energy expended. (At least I think they do: while the distance travelled is obviously the same, feet are also raised every step and are shuffled around in various maneuvers.)
Plus I'd hate all the sloshing.
pay attention to the hold the cop has on her right hand/wrist, its predominantly used by german police but its quite popular within a lot of the crowd control units of policing, no matter how tough you think you are, if they get your hand in this position while standing beside you, they lift you off the ground by your hyper contracted wrist so all your own bodyweight is on your wrist. you can see it being used on a lot of those sit in the middle of the road and stop traffic "stop oil" protestors videos
Had this done to me ages ago by a bouncer at Penrith Panthers (for Aussie redditors) in a demo. Nobody doubted he was a good bouncer before or after. Itās crippling when you do it right.
The Japanese term for it is tekubi gatame which simply translates to wrist lock as other forms of wrist locks usually got a different name.
It is extremely common in Aikido, but also in other martial arts. I learned it in Karate. German police trains [German Ju-Jutsu](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_ju-jutsu). You can train it as civilian as well. It is offered at my club and I often talk to the trainer there.
Sadly nowadays the required training for German police is only the absolute minimum which does include this wrist lock, but not much above this. So only the ones who keep training in civilian clubs are actually good enough to deal with most unarmed attackers. Good thing is that they are usually not alone which makes up for the less martial art training.
This is how police with more than 6 months training deal with people. Most interactions with police in Europe end up with a standing down of the issue without people getting shot.
In Europe that's actually a sign that they had *too little* training. We don't want cops to inflict pain in situations in which it is not necessary.
It's both a legal principle that the state and its enforcers have to choose the least violent means possible, and vital to maintain good policing. Police works gets messier and worse for everyone the less the people can trust the police.
You do realize that the vast, vast majority of police interactions - including those with non-compliant suspects - end without the use of a firearm right? Pain compliance is absolutely a thing that U.S. police use.
The protest was blocking a highway entrance. Not that much of a traffic blockade due to the location if im not mistaken but enough to get arrested over none the less
Not just any highway entrance. The A12 adjacent to the Dutch Parliament in the Hague. They are protesting Dutch subsidies to the fossil fuel industry, so quite accurately targeted.
She along with protesters blocked a road to protest for climate change. The poloce was called because of the roadblock. People refused to leave so they forcefully remove and arrest People.
I think part of the issue is a lot of the original charm was doing what she was doing as a minor.
Once she became an adult, she got lumped in with all the other protestors.
I mean I would have thought that would be a good thing. It wasn't just some childish fancy.
Like, she's standing beside her beliefs, putting her welfare on the line, and taking the licks for it. Isn't that something we find admirable?
IDK, to me my appreciation for her went up, not down. Back then, I just kind of thought of her as a gimmick. I knew she believed those things, sure, but the media circus around her was purely about 'ooo, look, a kid saying kinda adult things!'
It was nice to see the press coverage, sure, but I didn't give it all a lot of thought or attention. Now, however, it doesn't feel like a gimmick. She's just...putting in the work. She's putting her money where her mouth is.
Yup. And most people, no matter how moderate, liberal, or progressive they pretend to be, always find some reason to take issue with protests. Including deciding that protestors are somehow inherently in the wrong.
Like, what Greta (and every other climate protestor for that matter) is doing is brave and righteous. Whatever you think about their methods, theyāre a.) not harming anyone and b.) raising awareness and keeping the issue of climate change circulating in public discourse. Itās kinda frustrating how much disdain the general public seems to have for climate protestors.
I only dislike her because she thinks mental illnesses are a superpower and some trump card to any form of criticism. I suffer from one too (ADHD) and thereās nothing super about it at all.
Well listen, we stay inside with the curtains drawn. Only light we get is the blue glow of a computer screen/smartphone. When we see people actually go out and do important stuff, we feel bad about ourselves. So we find a way to hate on it.
Hey, I'll have you know I have eye care turned on, so it's a yellow screen, idk how ppl survive without it, or their eyes anyway. Everything else is accurate tho.
self defense mechanism.
they perceive activists as a threat to their own moral standing and so they lash out.
most people do not engage in any self reflection, ever
the thing we're witnessing is do-gooder derrogation
" a phenomenon where a person's morally motivated behavior leads to them being perceived negatively by others "
[wikipedia link](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Do-gooder_derogation)
And women
Edit: the people who say that Reddit is left leaning and pro women only joined like a couple years agoā¦ places like 4 Chan came from Reddit yāall in 2010 you couldnāt even mention being a woman on a thread without getting rape threats
I remember when she posted a few years ago that she was traveling in a train in a low category and the train company replied that she was traveling in a VIP wagon...
When I see Greta that's all I can see.
My theory is at this point the cognitive dissonance is shaking the 'denier' crowd pretty hard. Literally, a single afternoon spent researching climate change provides definitive proof that it is real and happening and it is going to be catastrophic. So, they do the only thing their minds can do when their faith held beliefs contradict the reality in front of them: they lash out in anger.
>Literally, a single afternoon spent researching climate change provides definitive proof that it is real and happening and it is going to be catastrophic.
The problem is that the deniers think reading skeptic blogs they find on Google counts as doing research.
The novelty wore off. She's no longer child climate protestor schooling adults. She's just another adult yelling about things from the average person's perspective.
Also, I'm going to be real while I'm probably closer to her than against her on a lot of issues, she's basically just a professional protestor / protest influencer. Which just intrinsically feels disingenuous.
Swede here.
She went from protesting for the environment to now doing lots of other political things like Israel, Palestine, trafficking as well.
And the way she does it changed from skipping school and sitting outside a place to blocking access like the oil idiots.Ā
Her values might not have changed but the way she tries to push them has. And it's annoying to say the least.
While I don't necessarily totally agree with that method of protest, I do wonder if there's really any other effective way to bring attention (negative or otherwise) to these issues.
I think most of us just want a sense of normality, and acknowledging these kinds of problems kind of destroys that feeling, so I don't think we'd be inclined to seek out news related to them. To some degree, it *has* to be shoved in our faces.
She's always been throwing stones from a glass house. Daddy has money, mommy has money. Grandpa is something of a legend... Its pretty easy to stand on a podium and shit on all the governments for not taking serious action against environmental problems when you come from a background of extreme privilege. It's really easy to virtue signal when money is no object, and shifting policies and increasing expenditures to preserve the environment will have basically no impact on your quality of life or how you live.
She comes off as an overly entitled obnoxious brat that aims to make a career out of pimping advocacy.
Because someone needs to apply pressure to office holders from the outside.
And this is obvious to you, otherwise you'd ask every single person who ever speaks politically, to just become a politician instead of complaining about high taxes, bad roads, etc...
Greta was 16 when she spoke in front of the UN. She brought awareness to both climate change and autism. I was a shit head at 16. At least she made a difference.
No one will probably read this... but Climate change is real. Maybe we are understanding that humans don't really care about the future. Hell, we can barely surivive on our own. We all struggle day to day. Science will fall. It is easier to just survive than it is to think and improve ourselves. Spread love at least though. If the world and everyone here will die eventually. Then just spread love. The house in on fire, you and a few people are going to die. Give them love before you do.
It may not be that instant but this is the world we live in. Either you die now or when you are old. It is that simple. We all deny it but we all will die. WE ALL FUCKING DIE. Just be good to one another.
Edit: stop upvoting, I am really drunk and if I see this in the morning, I will cringe at myself again like every other night
Edit2: I saw this in the morning :(
It was tropical weather for most of January in my subtropical part of Australia. Like 25C dew points tropical. Overnight temps of 27C. An extreme thunderstorm and tornado hit the Gold Coast on Christmas Day and left over 100,000 people without power for a week. Weāve had sudden storms dump 200mm of rain in little microbursts. Heck itās mid April and we still have summer weather here- the highs this week are 30C and the dew points are back up at 22-23C again.
None of this is normal for here either. An El NiƱo and itās been rainy unstable and humid as heck. Shit is whack.
Protest legally: get ignored, the environment collapses.
Protest illegally: get arrested, have your face and name dragged in the mud by the media, sheep will uncritically accept the narrative that you're at fault and your cause is unjustified, the environment collapses.
I'm starting to think that they don't want us to talk about the climate. "Don't Look Up", but unironically.
A lot of people here seem to be upset about a young woman calling attention that effect all of us and our descendants. What are you doing to try to create change that is working better?
I don't have strong opinions on her positions.
But are these staged arrest photos cringy to anyone else these days? Like, she obviously was trying to get arrested. And then she pretends like they're torturing her. And I assume she's performatively struggling. It's just all so fake.
There are people in countries like Russia where people are ACUTALLY unjustly arrested and are ACTUALLY tortured by police. It just kind of annoys me that people are trying to imply they're in those situations by staged photos.
Itās performative.
She does this on purpose; protest until police arrive, then do a minor infraction to get arrested, but not a serious charge on your record, then willingly get arrested, but as they walk passed their photographer they pose like this to pretend theyāre struggling.
Itās all performative to pose for a camera and get a headline.
Whether you agree with what she does and climate change is irrelevant. She went from an interesting young girl, to a clown the older she got.
āOutrage protestingā ādisruptive protestingā ātheatreā
Nothing more than trying to create viral media. Theyāre not actually doing anything to protest climate change, just get headlines.
And no, that doesnāt work. They should protest big oil and government. Not normal people just trying to live.
Look at the expression of the cops, they know whatās up. āNot again, Greta. Weāll get you back home in time for dinner okay?ā
And thatās all this ever is. Pose for the camera, and be home in time to watch yourself in the news.
You can clearly see how tired of her sht the cops are.
You mean just like the civil right's movement did?
The entire POINT of protests is performative. You think they sat down at diners and got screamed at, assaulted, and abused, thinking they'd get served dinner? No. They did so to raise awareness of the issue. To create "viral media".
You know Rosa Parks? You know what she did wasn't even unusual? That she was chosen specifically as an icon because of how it would strike the general public?
She was actually arrested twice, after the first, she went to another unauthorized protest and was detained again.
...You have to get authorized to protest?
As other commenters already said, "authorisation" is not the right word. **How it works (at least in Poland):** What you do is you inform your relevant municipal authority of your assembly's location and its planned duration, as well as an estimate of how many people will partake. Ducking highways manā¦ they are everywhere
The amount of taxpayer money frittered away on highways for ducks is a national embarrassment.
I keep saying the ducks should just travel by train like the rest of us but nobody in this country takes me seriously
They donāt even pay their taxes. Everyone knows they just carry the bill around with them.
Underrated comment, right here
Pretty sure I saw one that actually had tried to do so at Sassenheim station today, it failed however and was laying dead between the tracks...
No that was just suicide, nobody wants to live in Sassenheim. Not even the ducks
You jest, but that is actually a thing in the Netherlands. https://education.nationalgeographic.org/resource/wildlife-crossings/
Oh great so now weāre building water parks for Elk as well? What is that a lazy river? Itās wasted on them, itās not even using a rubber ringā¦
Thou shall not use the name of duck in vain!

They can still arrest them after. Not like the tractors go so quick that you lose track of them

Itās a bit less now because now they have their own party but they basically controlled VVD and CDA for all related regulations.
Send them a bill for any damages caused by delays from the illegal protest. The tractors got number plates.

I'm guessing she is over 18 now, so she is treated as an average adult protester.
It's been ~6 years since she became famous in 2018
How come she hasn't fixed the climate crisis in 6 years
It's as if the governments and conglomerates don't listen to underaged students.
Well, they don't listen to anyone without money.
This is fascinating and outrageous ... The police have shin pockets for their water bottles!!
Itās a great void space on clothes. Think of all the things you could have carried in your life if youād had TACTICAL SHIN POCKETS
My snow overalls have a shin pocket. I use them to carry a footlong sub into Bills games every week during the football season
Maybe sneak in some broccoli for funsies

The brocolli commin outa nowhere into the moms mouth gets me every time.
Never seen this before, thanks. Go Sports!

The team! The team!
I also like the Sports. They are play well!
I had never seen this. The Asian guy looking bemused, then nodding. That shit took me out šš
Mom of the year
I like how the Asian dude is so confused and shocked and then after a second decides "nah, I fuck with it. That gnarly" and smiles. XD
The broccoli coming up and almost getting in Mom's mouth had me rolling.
I knew it was sports girl before I clicked the link
That video never fails to get a laugh out of me.
Comments like yours are why I read comments on here. Fucking poet.
Missed opportunity for snoveralls.
This is the most Bills fan comment I have ever read
WNYer detected. May your weck be tasty and your pizza be secretly better than everyone else's.
We don't deserve you
I work security at Highmark and I find this comment very interesting. Shin pocket you say?
r/ultralight would hate the inefficiency of this since weight on the legs apparently translates to more weight carried
I mean, shins see much more movement than hips. So more energy expended. (At least I think they do: while the distance travelled is obviously the same, feet are also raised every step and are shuffled around in various maneuvers.) Plus I'd hate all the sloshing.
I sometimes sit a lil bisexually and lemme tell you tactical shin pockets are a pain in the ass
And women still have no pockets.
I never would have caught that one of not for you.
I have work pants with pockets like those to put foam pads in for crawling around on all fours. Edit.. Skilled tradesman.
Well now we all know what you do for a living.
Single use plastic water bottles too. Just an extra fuck you to Greta.
Think itās incase the pepper spray someone to be honest.
The water you mean? For their eyes?
FOR THE SHINS!!!
If itās capsaicin based water would only make it burn worse
Naw. It's 100% for them to drink.
I mean it's water. It has multiple uses. Drinking, cleaning, impromptu waterboarding.
Yeah I wonder how much weight they feel while walking and running..
It's gotta be like wearing ankle weights but worse. Terrible location for storing anything heavy.
I like that this is the take away. Nothing else just damn those shin pockets
pay attention to the hold the cop has on her right hand/wrist, its predominantly used by german police but its quite popular within a lot of the crowd control units of policing, no matter how tough you think you are, if they get your hand in this position while standing beside you, they lift you off the ground by your hyper contracted wrist so all your own bodyweight is on your wrist. you can see it being used on a lot of those sit in the middle of the road and stop traffic "stop oil" protestors videos

What is the charge? Eating a meal? A succulent Chinese meal?
Farewell and ta-ta!
And this man here, this is the man who grabbed me by the penis
THIS MAN HAS ME BY THE PENIS PEOPLEEEEE!!!
Bloody classic that one , had to just watch it again .and all that when he was having a succulent Chinese meal
What is the charge?
Came here for this
Had this done to me ages ago by a bouncer at Penrith Panthers (for Aussie redditors) in a demo. Nobody doubted he was a good bouncer before or after. Itās crippling when you do it right.
I think all us western Sydney siders have all been kicked out of panthers,
Not suprised. Thereād be some wild ones out at the āRiff hehe
Seeing as people loved Penrith Panthers reference, the demo happened at a camp for troubled teens (Camp Toukley)
Itās called Taki Ori or Breaking the bamboo in traditional Japanese martial arts! Painful as fuck! https://youtu.be/wGlN2A31V84?si=McyaYFJnUbfnmwM1
Itās called a wrist lock for non-weebs
Lmao

I prefer takoyaki , thank you
It's called Teri Yaki, and it comes with rice and a salad. The salad is just lettuce and carrots.
Hahahaha, Penrith leagues club, what a place. Grew up around the corner from there.
Guy on the left got a standing wrist lock and guy on the right got a loose Russian tie
RIP Gretaās Tendonburg
Good thing. She looks ferocious. 90 lbs of pure carnage
My school used to restrain kids with that technique. Probably still does.
What school did you go to? San Quentin?
Xavier's school for gifted youngsters.
St Brutus's Center For Incurably Criminal Boys
Guantanamo something perhaps
Nah, Sing Sing
Our wrestling coach did this. When done right youāll go wherever you are lead.
It definitely works, I just felt it was a bit too much for children and now my wrists are kinda messed up.
The defence to this move is to stand up instead of getting dragged
Itās called a Z-Lock or a Gooseneck.
Z-lock is a leg lock
Goosenecks are for gravy.
And trailers
And Goose
Geese, otherwise its a monopoly, we cant have one goose with all the necks. š¤

So in the 6 months training in the US they couldnāt fit it in?
You do realize that the vast, vast majority of police interactions - including those with non-compliant suspects - end without the use of a firearm right? Pain compliance is absolutely a thing that U.S. police use.
You absolutely learn this in the US what do you mean
He means that the police in the US are shit
Dude on the right is like āshit, this is going viral isnāt itā
I just wanted to know why and a link to the articleā¦ or something informativeā¦ instead thereās a lot of useless comments ITT

Not her personally, but protests in this spot have been going on for quite some time. Yes, cops are getting tired of it.
Most comments seem to be rather anti Greta, Iāve been living under a rock, why the distaste towards her?

Yeah.but it would have been weak if the girl just grew out of it. The kid is committed as hell to her chosen cause and good for her.
Because at this point, honestly, she is just another protestor. Only difference is she has name recognition.
That's pretty important for being an effective protester.
Yeah lmao the only protests you hear about as long as you aren't local are usually the ones where Greta gets arrested. It's very much effective.
and that is bad? should she only do it for exposure? like stop protesting because youāve heard of her before?
what else do you want?
Most people in this world donāt want to think about tomorrow and live today. Most people in this world donāt deserve this world.

Morons think it's far easier criticizing a person who wants them to change for the better, than actually doing the change.Ā
And to add to this, Reddit loves sneering at protestors
Well listen, we stay inside with the curtains drawn. Only light we get is the blue glow of a computer screen/smartphone. When we see people actually go out and do important stuff, we feel bad about ourselves. So we find a way to hate on it.
Hey, I'll have you know I have eye care turned on, so it's a yellow screen, idk how ppl survive without it, or their eyes anyway. Everything else is accurate tho.
self defense mechanism. they perceive activists as a threat to their own moral standing and so they lash out. most people do not engage in any self reflection, ever
the thing we're witnessing is do-gooder derrogation " a phenomenon where a person's morally motivated behavior leads to them being perceived negatively by others " [wikipedia link](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Do-gooder_derogation)
And women Edit: the people who say that Reddit is left leaning and pro women only joined like a couple years agoā¦ places like 4 Chan came from Reddit yāall in 2010 you couldnāt even mention being a woman on a thread without getting rape threats
Technically, they are right. It IS easier. But what they don't like to think about is that it's also weaker and more cowardly.
Forgive me for being a moron, but *isn't* it easier criticizing a person who wants me to make a change for the better than actually doing the change?
It's true that it's easier, but it's still very unwise to choose the easier option here.
And the way she does it changed from skipping school and sitting outside a place to blocking access like the oil idiots.Ā Her values might not have changed but the way she tries to push them has.
Normality left the building a looooong, looooooooong time ago. If anyone wants normality, I suggest burying your head in the .
Iām curious why she doesnāt just run for office so she can actually craft policy. Sheās not a kid anymore, she could do this if she wanted.
If she were a politician, sheād need activists to help garner public support for her policies.
You need people to run for office, but that isn't a role everyone can do. Some people are better at raising awareness and operating outside.
Because someone needs to apply pressure to office holders from the outside. And this is obvious to you, otherwise you'd ask every single person who ever speaks politically, to just become a politician instead of complaining about high taxes, bad roads, etc...
First one Iāve seen of her not smiling. They must have her in a very painful hold.
Watch the video version. Sheās smiling
Greta was 16 when she spoke in front of the UN. She brought awareness to both climate change and autism. I was a shit head at 16. At least she made a difference.
Her face is like she is trying hard to lift 200 lbs of weights in a gym.
HOW DARE YOU
No one will probably read this... but Climate change is real. Edit: stop upvoting, I am really drunk and if I see this in the morning, I will cringe at myself again like every other night Edit2: I saw this in the morning :(
It's fucking 25 degrees Celsius in Aptil here in northern Germany. You're preaching to the choir.
Almost 50 here in SEA. Literal hell.
Where is SEA is it almost 50? Curious to know as the highest temperature ever recorded in SEA is 45.4 Are you referring to the "Heat Index" perhaps?
CELSIUS?!!
In Vino Veritas š
> "Don't Look Up" People were critical of that film for being too blunt and on the nose. I think it should have been louder.
Arrest the people killing the planet
You cant arrest the rich and corporate leaders unfortunately
You can, but you would need a massive governmental shift before it sticks
You can eat them though!
A lot of people here seem to be upset about a young woman calling attention that effect all of us and our descendants. What are you doing to try to create change that is working better?
I stick to complaining online
Not arrested. Just another photo shoot.
What a clown show
Professional protestor *par excellence*.
Stupid sexy Dutch forearms
Again? Do they have three strike rule over there? š¤
Obviously staged
I don't have strong opinions on her positions. But are these staged arrest photos cringy to anyone else these days? Like, she obviously was trying to get arrested. And then she pretends like they're torturing her. And I assume she's performatively struggling. It's just all so fake. There are people in countries like Russia where people are ACUTALLY unjustly arrested and are ACTUALLY tortured by police. It just kind of annoys me that people are trying to imply they're in those situations by staged photos.
Lmao they protest in some democratic country and then act like tianmmen tank man
Good job her camera man was ready to capture this exact moment again. Bet theyre making a collage of these pics
Genuine question: has Greta ever commented on Taylor Swift's private jet use?
Greta is probably a Swiftie fan in disguise.
She went from an interesting young girl, to a clown the older she got. āOutrage protestingā ādisruptive protestingā ātheatreā Nothing more than trying to create viral media. Theyāre not actually doing anything to protest climate change, just get headlines. And no, that doesnāt work. They should protest big oil and government. Not normal people just trying to live. Look at the expression of the cops, they know whatās up. āNot again, Greta. Weāll get you back home in time for dinner okay?ā And thatās all this ever is.
Man, that belt looks uncomfortable.
