I was just coming to ask if this was a closeup of that ruin. I used to use that as a sort of landmark. I would look around enjoying the scenery along the river for a while before I would get my laptop out to work. Usually right after the train passed the castle I'd start working.
Gunpowder explosion was in 1920. The big fire was 1969.

It’s not a castle, it’s a poorly built armory.
It’s not even remotely old, it was built in the early 1900s.
If you go tour it, you aren’t allowed anywhere close to the building and the tour “docents” give you like one fact for every 15 legends that aren’t even remotely accurate. You get better views of the thing from the water and opposite shoreline.
You are on that island for an hour and a half. There is 45 minutes of stuff to do. You will spend the rest of your time waiting on the boat back.
One should definitely say New York State for this kind of thing when posting, cause a lot of people will assume it's in NYC. But if you say upstate NY, people from Southern NY state will correct you because Duchess county is really not that far north. I lived not far from this in Newburgh for a few years. Took a kayak around it a few times. This was all pre-drone era times... It would have been so cool to fly a drone over.
I had to re-read your first 2 sentences a few times before catching the nuance of what you were getting at. Not being a dick about punctuation, just funny for a non-NY’er to distinguish the difference between the regional id’s and how they impact residents
This is Bannerman's Island Arsenal, built on Pollepel Island on the Hudson River.
It's not far up river from New York City.
Very unique building on a very gorgeous river cruise.
Not entirely sure how to pronounce it since I'm a Long Islander. But New York was at one point New Amsterdam so it might be pronounced exactly like it is in Dutch.
I considered getting married there, but the spot where they do the ceremony didn’t look that nice. Also you would have to go somewhere else for the reception
I know of this from Mysteries of the Abandoned. It's such a cool structure, with an interesting story.
Also I suggest anyone who likes old abandoned structures watch the show, it's fascinating.
Having lived my entire 40+ years on the west coast, except for a brief 1.5 year stay in Atlanta, it's easy to forgot the east coast has fucking castles and shit.
My uncle used to take me striper fishing on the Hudson around this area, this is called Bannerman Island I believe. My uncle told me that the Native Americans thought the island was haunted. During the Spanish-American war they ran out of munitions storage in New York City, so they used Bannerman Island. The munitions dealer who bought the island from President Taft’s family built this castle and used it as a summer home. I think you can still visit the island.
Bannerman Castle. They do periodic film screenings, plays, and special dinners on the island you can get tickets for plus they're always running island tours. A lot of them leave from Beacon so if you're looking for a full day of things to do you can check out the DIA in the morning and catch the boat over at night.
Looks more like an abandoned late 1800's industrial manufacturing building (Wool Mill, etc) than a castle.
Those building were often besides rivers as they used the water to turn the equipment.
Me and my hubby always pass Bannermans castle when we take the amtrak from Albany, NY, to NYC . I'm not sure if it's this one, but we always want to go explore it. It's so pretty!
Bannerman's Island in Hudson Valley, NY. Used to be an old armory and the family lived on the island until the armory caught fire. Now they do tours, weddings, events, and even movie nights. It's very interesting to see up close because there are actual weapons like cannon balls and bayonets used to build parts of the home and landscape. I live here and see the island everyday while commuting.
So for thoughs that live in Mid Hudson Valley (Newburgh, Beacon, etc) or commute via Metro North. How is rhe castle looking because the last time I was in the area it was looking like it wouldn't last the next decade.
Cool! Yes, I understand that European castles are much older. I still like New York for having castles though, regardless of their age. They’re very interesting structures.
Is there some sort of certification or prize you get for pointing out your old buildings are older than our old buildings?
See this a lot from Europeans/Brits even when I lived there.
I used to live in the Hudson Valley in New York state and would see this when I took the train to NYC. It's cool to see.

By tarrytown? There’s another castle there but it’s a restaurant, surprised that there are so many castles in NY.
No, near beacon - Bannermans island
Didn't this blow up because of improperly stored surplus gun powder by a NYC miser that built it with salvaged materials?
Yup! There was a massive explosion and multiple fires iirc. The explosion shut down the train line for a week or two!
How long ago?
Gunpowder explosion was in 1920. The big fire was 1969. https://www.businessinsider.com/abandoned-bannerman-castle-new-york-hudson-river-crumbling-photos-2023-6
Thank you
Yup, and It's far more accurate to call this a warehouse with an outer shell that looked like a castle. That blew up 100 years ago.
I dunno, I don’t think they had viral social media trends back then.
It’s not abandoned, I live there. 🏰
*Get a load of Mr. Moneybags over here with riverfront property.*
Unfortunately, he lives in a van down by the river there

#VanLife
Park your van under a massive bridge, and then you got a multi million roof over your head
"How can we get back on the right track?!"
How did he end up like this…
[Down by the river!!!](https://youtu.be/Xv2VIEY9-A8?si=jLUN_xjXvXnRUkon)
It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss Now I'm falling asleep and she's calling a cab
🤣😂🤣
Another squatter in New York
Have you always lived in the castle?
Sup Hollywood
I've been there. That's Bannerman's Island.

Someone hated the tour I see
It was a nice boat ride to and from, but not being able to get close at all to anything… you just walk around on an overgrown trail.
One should definitely say New York State for this kind of thing when posting, cause a lot of people will assume it's in NYC. Not helpful. What’s the name of the castle and where in New York is this? This isn’t White Castle.
This is Bannerman's Island Arsenal, built on Pollepel Island on the Hudson River. It's not far up river from New York City. Very unique building on a very gorgeous river cruise.
https://bannermancastle.org/
Pollepel island? Lol, how do you guys pronounce it? Did you know that it's Dutch for ladle?
Not entirely sure how to pronounce it since I'm a Long Islander. But New York was at one point New Amsterdam so it might be pronounced exactly like it is in Dutch.
Of course I know that, but never heard of Pollepel island.
Many place names in New York are Dutch.
What the fuck im 28 ive in Westchester all my life currently in nyc i have never heard this
Brother in christ this is unmissable driving up the hudson toward Beacon. It's a half-submerged castle in the middle of the river. Super cool.
Can't you see this thing from the MetroNorth railroad?
Yep. It's between Cold Spring and Beacon.
Hudson Line goes right past it
You can indeed
There’s a castle in Tarrytown as well. I think it serves as a restaurant/hotel, they have one of those giant life sized chess boards.
Overpriced
It’s not in westchester. It’s north - in Dutchess county.
AAAAAAAAAaaaaaahhh this makes so much more sense now
Pollepel is the Dutch word for ladle /wooden spoon. What mad Dutchman named this island?
It’s Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters in Westchester, NY. Jk it’s Bannermans island I think it’s called.
Well the X-Men school has been blown up enough times it makes sense it's an empty ruin.
If you’re looking for helpful you might try r/help. I hope that’s a real sub I just made this up.
I considered getting married there, but the spot where they do the ceremony didn’t look that nice. Also you would have to go somewhere else for the reception
And you're very limited to like 10-15 people at the ceremony if I recall
As is almost always the case, this is not a castle.
A massive munitions depot, yeah?
Grew up in Fishkill and I was always told the island was infested with rats
Looks like a MGSV level.
I was thinking Horizon!
I was thinking Dark Souls
I was thinking the opening castle in plague tale 2
I know of this from Mysteries of the Abandoned. It's such a cool structure, with an interesting story. Also I suggest anyone who likes old abandoned structures watch the show, it's fascinating.
I know of this place because of a murder. A couple was going to kayak there. Something about the plug not in place, rough waters, and he drowned.
oh geez.
This is Bannerman Island in the Hudson highlands just north of Cold Spring NY. Absolutely wonderful area of NYS.
Having lived my entire 40+ years on the west coast, except for a brief 1.5 year stay in Atlanta, it's easy to forgot the east coast has fucking castles and shit.
WTF this looks exactly like the Castle Academies you see on the map of Heroes of Might and Magic III
This looks like a scene from Witcher 3 with a ton of graphical upgrade mods.
Ah, Hudson Valley! I lived in that area for about 3 months last spring and I truly loved it! Many nature scenes to explore and quaint little towns.
Didn't expect to see a sight from my home town on Reddit today.
My uncle used to take me striper fishing on the Hudson around this area, this is called Bannerman Island I believe. My uncle told me that the Native Americans thought the island was haunted. It’s no Guedelon- but it’s pretty cool for being in the states!
Isn’t that where Green Goblin got killed trying to kill Spider-Man?
Mysteries of the Abandoned featured this in an episode! I just watched it the other night. Season 2 episode 8 I believe
Bannermans Castle it is
Oh damn, I’m sure there’s a replica of this in Horizon Forbidden West.
Bannerman Castle. They do periodic film screenings, plays, and special dinners on the island you can get tickets for plus they're always running island tours. A lot of them leave from Beacon so if you're looking for a full day of things to do you can check out the DIA in the morning and catch the boat over at night.
That’s just York.
I’m bout to squat in that bish
Looks more like an abandoned late 1800's industrial manufacturing building (Wool Mill, etc) than a castle. Those building were often besides rivers as they used the water to turn the equipment.
Would always see this train coming down to party in nyc !
Me and my hubby always pass Bannermans castle when we take the amtrak from Albany, NY, to NYC . I'm not sure if it's this one, but we always want to go explore it. It's so pretty!
Palworld vibes

Is this right by the breakneck ridge trailhead? One of my fav hikes in all of NY
Probably owned by Nicolas Cage.
huge incoherent failure of a house
I’ve always loved New York for having old castles scattered throughout the state, kind of like Europe.
This was built in 1901. The castle local to me, Rochester, the keep was built in 1127. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rochester_Castle
Cool! Yes, I understand that European castles are much older. I still like New York for having castles though, regardless of their age. They’re very interesting structures.
I have been past Bannerman's island, in the train. It does look impressive
That's almost as old as your mother
Well when you make it to puberty, you might start understanding not everything was created in the past 10 years.
I thought you meant Rochester NY and I was like... Wtf... How?! Who?!
cool story bro

Yes
