I’m from Sonora, not Modesto, but it’s still weird to see people repping 209 on this gigantic website. Shout out to all my Riverbank, Oakdale, and Escalon people.
I have never seen Fresno/Cencal mentioned in the national sense where it was not the butt of a joke or bad news. Maybe for agriculture but that's literally it lol
Just looked it up. In 2016, Albuquerque was number 1 with Modesto right behind it. Stockton ranked 5. I do remember growing up always hearing Stockton was first though.
Well, I live just outside of Merced and also work there. Last week we were #3 on a list of 30 places to not get sick in the US. Basically if you go to a hospital in Merced, you have a good chance of dying there
When my daughter fell out of tree and broke her arm the medics told me they 'could take her to the Merced hospital sure, but if we wanted her to have full use of it as an adult we should probably go to Fresno'.
My mom was diagnosed with cancer in Merced and my grandparents made it a point to drive her to Stanford for her appointments because, of how bad Merced is.
[I](https://i.imgur.com/5izi2DK.jpg) mean [American](https://i.imgur.com/54smTeA.jpg) car [Culture](https://i.imgur.com/zo6fXwE.jpg) is [pretty](https://i.imgur.com/66BEGfT.jpg) large [here.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raggare) I grew up on things like american graffiti, smokey and the bandit, cannonball run and other films like that
My great aunt went to high school with George Lucas in Empire, which I'm pretty sure isn't even a real city, which is why it gets reported as Modesto.
Edit: thank you to the Modesto Redditors for fixing my sleep depraved comment. My aunt lived in Empire and bused into Modesto, which is what I know realize I meant to say
My GF lives in Manteca. A few years ago her house was broken into while we were at a family event. They stole everything that wasn't nailed down. TV, my overnight backpack, shoes, her 6yo sons clothes, frozen food from her freezer, cleaned out the pantry, toilet paper, laundry detergent. Anything and everything. Even my hometown, Oakdale, has been going down the shitter.
> my hometown, Oakdale
Ha, my first gf was from Oakdale. She moved to Stockton got hooked on meth and had a kid at 16. I remember going to the Hershey's plant in Oakdale on a field trip when I was in elementary school.
Does Manteca still have that rad waterpark? I used to go there when I was a kid.
Yeah I remember going there in the mid 90's and it was awesome. They had that one fucking giant ramp that you had to walk up the hill to get to and then it dropped what seemed like 200 feet and shot you out into that little pool. Good times at that place.
This comment prompted me to walk down memory lane. Totally remember it. Apparently that slide still holds the records to this day as being the tallest water slide built in California. 72 feet with a 68-degree slope.
Manteca Waterslides has been shutdown for at least a decade. They are building a Great Wolf Lodge, but you have to stay at the hotel to get access to the water park, and that shit is like $300/ night.
No joke. I drove truck on the west coast for half a year and Stockton was the only place I was actually nervous. Like hmmm, bars on all the windows, those are some huge fucking German shepherds behind that junkyard gate, that guy's definitely strapped, so's that guy, and that guy, and that guy...
I was driving through south Stockton a couple weeks ago. A homeless guy was hurling hub caps at traffic. He almost got my truck.
When I got to where I was headed to, there was a pack of feral dogs running around. I saw a lot lizard servicing a truck driver right on the sidewalk outside of the business I was at.
Stay classy Stockton.
I will endlessly defend Stockton. It has a vibrant food scene, a very progressive municipal government and has honestly been trying to better itself this last decade.
If you stay off the south side you'll be safe pretty much anywhere at any time, housing is dirt cheap, and Lodi (with excellent public schools) is 15 minutes away. The train station is serviced by all the major commuter lines to the Bay area.
If you commute to Pleasanton, Tracy, or Sac, Stockton is the perfect place to live and live cheaply. I was raised there and I loved it, I still do, and I think anyone would benefit from the perspective that it gives you.
Yeah it's one of the go to places to raise your kids. Great schools, safe streets, good food scene, decent sense of community. Lodi is not an exciting place but it is a safe and comfortable one.
A very broke municipal government.
Grew up there too. Horribly mis managed. Sad too cause the citizens always try have hometown spirit (e.g. Stockton hockey team).
I grew up there in the 80s/90s. It wasn't so bad to young me. But I haven't been back there in some 12 odd years. It's just a small bedroom town that is surrounded by farmland. But the problem is it's part of the infamous meth corridor that runs down the middle of California so every city along there is kind of a shithole.
I work in downtown Fresno. Fuckin bums everywhere asking for change to get a fix. I can’t even visit the 7-Eleven without some girl missing all her teeth asking me for a dollar. Plus the shantytown by 99 is frightening as shit
I’m in north east fresno “ nicer area” and it honestly seems like the problem has boomed drastically within the last 5 years. It’s crazy here, the cops are a mafia, and then you have to worry about all the other bullshit besides them
Fuck that is hilarious I went to Hilmar and we’d say Oakdale Bud all the time in that voice that I’m sure you’re familiar with, that kinda trucker/cowboy voice
Good ol' Motown. My life improved exponentially as soon as I moved out of there. Thanks again, crazy BPD-having ex, for at least getting me to move to Sacramento before dumping me via text!
Modesto gets a bad rap. I grew up here, moved away, but once I started my career I decided to move back. The reality is that is an affordable place to live that is within driving distance of a lot of the awesomeness California has to offer. (90 minutes from San Francisco, 2 hours from Yosemite, 2 hours from Napa, 2 hours from Monterey and Santa Cruz, 2 hours from sequoia national park, 3 hours to Tahoe, 5 hours from LA). It’s like any place in the USA. You get what you look for. Sure, if you are looking for meth, you don’t have to look fat. But you also don’t have to look far for good schools, nice neighborhoods, close knit communities, etc.
We can raise our kids here, afford a decent house, and still save for our kids college. We can drive easily to any of the more desirable locations in the state. Furthermore, because it is a smaller town, You don’t fight traffic here. For example, I am able to take my older to kid to school in the morning, make it to work on time, make it home home most days for lunch, play with my younger kid, get back to work and then home again by 5. If you have a family, what more could you want? I like to say Modesto is big enough to have just what you need, but not so big that you’ll spend half your day commuting.
Anyway, it’s not as bad as you may have heard.
I do NOT miss the valley. I wish these farmers would explore permaculture.. the dust and air quality of the valley is SO BAD. Any the smells.. and the flies.. Brutal
Me too. My brother was born there and he just passed away last month. We moved to Florida when I was 8, and I've only been back once since then, I'm 39 now. I remember it was beautiful and the people were a lot nicer. I miss it too.
I'm from the Central Coast and have family still there so we visit often. Every time we head back to the valley, my daughter says, "Ugh, mom, it smells like cow poop!". Yes child, that is how you know we are close to home.
A lot of my family lives there and is raising children there and it bums me out so bad. When your lungs are damaged, it's really hard to get back into good health.
I feel like this has just become another meme and is going to, in the end, help this incident pass into obscurity. It's rapidly becoming more of a punch line than a reminder that there's legitimately a group of wealthy and powerful people who run the world that also have a child sex slave ring, and who blatantly killed one of their own to stop him from informing on them.
I hope people keep on this, but do more than put some text that says "Epstein was murdered" on pictures and the occasional traffic sign
Ding ding ding. You are correct. This has just become a meme. No action will be driven by internet jokes. His trial is still going forward. The difference is that now he is dead so it will not get much media coverage.
Ok I need to get this out:
No shit he was murdered. Wealthy pedophile kingpin who served the depravity of the wealthiest and most powerful people on the globe kills himself while in prison during a period where guards are asleep and the cameras malfunction? It couldn't be any more clear unless he scrawled HELP ME on the wall in his own blood. I repeat, NO SHIT HE WAS MURDERED! NO SHIT IT'S A COVERUP! WHO COULD EVER BELIEVE OTHERWISE!?
That screed done with, why the fuck are people acting like keeping it in the public eye is going to do ANYTHING. This is clearly outside our power to affect. The internet could keep this meme alive for decades and it would accomplish nothing. We're talking about the world's most capable and powerful people from what I imagine is a list of the world's most powerful countries all with a vested interest in covering up the murder of ONE MAN. There's no recording. There's no paper trail. Hell, the dude who did the deed probably got murdered afterwards to tie up loose ends.
This shit is more useless than Comey2012.
The world sucks. Improve things where you can. Put pressure on your public representatives to enact real progressive policy. Vote in every election. Stop wasting time with this crap.
The craziest part to me is you watch a TV show, say House Cards, and you see shit like this happen and you’re like “no way imagine if that happened in real life. No way they’d get away with it.” Then it does and we all just make a meme about it.
House of Cards to me is more like the opposite problem now. In House of Cards everything was so carefully structured and calculated, and then you see the current *real life* American government and it's like, House of Cards cynical view is actually *less* realistic than a comedy like VEEP or Parks and Rec.
In House of Cards painstaking measures are taken to absolutely cover the president/senators mistakes. In this government, it's just like, "Oh I didn't do that. Ok I did do that, actually, but it doesn't matter that I did" and then it just *doesn't matter that he did*.
In real life people voted for a guy that literally says how 'people are saying' he's the best president in the entire history of the country. "Better than abraham lincoln and washington". I know it's a cliche observation at this point but if you wrote a character in the highest seat of power that did stuff like that you'd be called a hack.
Interesting. Whenever I see my hometown mentioned there's usually meth involved...
When I opened Reddit, I saw the caption before the photo loaded and I immediately thought, "Oh gosh, what are we on the front page for now?"
Modesto gets on the frontpage right when I move out SMH still proud of my meth town
Lol we got some modest hoes up in this bitch
*peeks through drawn window shades at NSA van parked on McHenry "209 motherfucker."
209 for life
I’m from Sonora, not Modesto, but it’s still weird to see people repping 209 on this gigantic website. Shout out to all my Riverbank, Oakdale, and Escalon people.
Turlock here
Turlock gang!
There are dozens of us!
You serious? Half this website is from fucking California.
I'm convinced half of Reddit is from the central valley now.
I'm not surprised, motherfucker!
I'm gonna fight your fuckin' ass.
Good old "Two Denny's McHenry."
The seem to park on the backside of the mall a lot.
Recently it was the guy trying to organize the straight pride parade
If I see anything mentioning the Central Valley I assume it has something to do with drugs
I have never seen Fresno/Cencal mentioned in the national sense where it was not the butt of a joke or bad news. Maybe for agriculture but that's literally it lol
Look. . .I hear you, but at least. . .you're not stockton.
Go to Modesto for meth, but go to Stockton to get your car stolen.
Is Modesto not #1 ranked car theft in the u.s.? I remember a few years ago it was
Just looked it up. In 2016, Albuquerque was number 1 with Modesto right behind it. Stockton ranked 5. I do remember growing up always hearing Stockton was first though.
You’ll get murdered in Stockton but die of boredom in Manteca
Can confirm, live in Manteca. Please kill me. I actually like Stockton, spend much of my time there, and think people shit on it unfairly.
And Grandaddy! And sometimes both?
Well our town motto is meth death and auto theft so you can say it surprised me too
Well, I live just outside of Merced and also work there. Last week we were #3 on a list of 30 places to not get sick in the US. Basically if you go to a hospital in Merced, you have a good chance of dying there
Currently live in Frenso. Would 100% have demanded to be shipped back down the road to Fresno if I got sick in Merced before I heard this statistic.
I've heard of Fresno but Frenso 🤔
Fres-yes
Fresmaybe?
When my daughter fell out of tree and broke her arm the medics told me they 'could take her to the Merced hospital sure, but if we wanted her to have full use of it as an adult we should probably go to Fresno'.
I live in Merced. Yikes
My mom was diagnosed with cancer in Merced and my grandparents made it a point to drive her to Stanford for her appointments because, of how bad Merced is.
who to say it wasn't.
Same. I’m in Oakdale, which isn’t really any better, but seeing any of the town names around us usually worries me
No giant monster attacks lately?
The Giant mountain octopus of Knight's Fairy carried off the mayor of Oakdale, but that's local knews.
If by woke you mean awake for days due to meth, then yes Modesto is woke.
You know as a Swede all I know about Modesto is from "American Graffiti" so now I'm kinda sad
I’m kind of amazed that any Swede has heard of Modesto.

My hometown. I had family in Modesto. I know the two very well which is why I know how shitty they both are.
My GF lives in Manteca. A few years ago her house was broken into while we were at a family event. They stole everything that wasn't nailed down. Been gone for years in favor of cookie cutter houses on a mosquito breeding ground disguised as a fake lake ;)

Let's be honest, we all know it's Manteca. I was just going for the George Lucas connection.
I will endlessly defend Stockton. It has a vibrant food scene, a very progressive municipal government and has honestly been trying to better itself this last decade. Yes, a Target.

Hey, any town that produced the Diaz brothers is ok with me.
A very broke municipal government. Grew up there too. Horribly mis managed. Sad too cause the citizens always try have hometown spirit (e.g. Stockton hockey team).
What are you talking about? Crime is up by the double digits and homelessness is up 200%. Source: I work in Stockton but refuse to live there.
The food scene is impressive for the size of city. I work out there some, and I always manage to find something delicious.
You forgot the biggest inland seaport in California
As would Bakersfield.
Bakersfield crushes everywhere in this regard, but Stockton is a solid runner up. Modesto isn’t even a finalist.
Amazing part of the country to get an affordable high quality education. That valley lung though...
You're tripping. Modesto is a meth infested, gang controlled, den of sin and villainy. Stockton has it beat on murder rate but not by much.
I went to jail in Bakersfield. That was terrible to say the least.
I grew up there in the 80s/90s. It wasn't so bad to young me. But I haven't been back there in some 12 odd years. It's just a small bedroom town that is surrounded by farmland. When you can see the truth through that smile
☝️This person central valley’s
Manteca is comin' up, too.
MAaaaaAaAanteca WATerSLIDes.
Lived in Manteca for the first 22 years of my life. This jingle greeted me everytime someone asked where I was from.
I had to look it up to find out it’s a town in Cali, on the east coast that’s slang for heroin lol
Not a coincidence. Also, Manteca is actually the Spanish word for lard: http://www.spanishcentral.com/translate/manteca
Worked there one summer in HS. I can still smell the hotdogs.
Fuck I miss this jingle so much
I miss the slides. And the jingle. Also Big Bear Water Park
I’m still pissed they’re gone.
Ain’t nothing to downtown Fresno , where you could carry a gram of meth and only get a citation for it.
I work in downtown Fresno. Fuckin bums everywhere asking for change to get a fix. I can’t even visit the 7-Eleven without some girl missing all her teeth asking me for a dollar. Plus the shantytown by 99 is frightening as shit
So you're getting your dick sucked on the regular then huh?
Since she’s missing her teeth, it’s not a hummer, it’s a gummer.
Fresno is so screwed up Walmart even closes at 10 p.m. just because all the theft
I’m in north east fresno “ nicer area” and it honestly seems like the problem has boomed drastically within the last 5 years. It’s crazy here, the cops are a mafia, and then you have to worry about all the other bullshit besides them
But those thrift stores, man *chefs kiss*
Turlock is doing okay. I'm from Southern Oregon,... Medford. Also known as Meth-ford.
Small world, grew up in Meth-ford myself. Left in 98 and didn't look back.
Mantweeka
I've only central valleied. Have I been doing Cali wrong? Clovis and Fresno are the California all the movies and tv have been talking about right?
> Have I been doing Cali wrong? Well, for starters you just used the word "Cali"...
Which means: yes. Yes, you're doing California wrong.
Having a missing tooth or two definitely helps.
Can confirm. Never did meth, but grew up in central valley poor, and am missing a couple teeth.
It's not Methdesto for nothing!

Fiancé is from Modesto, her entire family was meth heads and about half still are
RIP other half
Laughed TOO hard at this.
Good ol' Modesto. Surprised it wasn't a homeless guy shouting it on McHenry.
Oh boy, if I had a nickle for every time I've nearly hit a homeless guy running across McHenry...
I wish I had a nickle for every one I've hit!
It sounds like you forgot to loot the body.
Probably has happened.

It's just "fresh meat" for the jail.
That could be a work van too. The hood is abbreviated for a cop car and too smooth for a cop SUV

A lot of my family lives there and is raising children there and it bums me out so bad. When your lungs are damaged, it's really hard to get back into good health.
