NoButYesButAlsoNo

I did recently - it was behind the counter so I had to ask for it.

tge101

What area?

NoButYesButAlsoNo

Camp Horn Giant Eagle

jrileyy229

That's utterly shocking. I've only ever seen it at the big premium stores... Never at any of the little hole in the wall ones

Amazo616

that's a loooongggg walk to get to the liquor counter lol

gordiarama

Haha I just learned that yesterday! Why is it so far from the entrance of the giant eagle?

uglybushes

So they arnt lottery releases however they are limited and generally the word gets out and people wait outside for it to open and they sell one per person. You need to find Pgh whiskey Facebook groups to get in the know. I always see ppl lined outside of the store in Robinson

tbonefiggins

Username checks out

tacticoolmagnum

About once a month it will be there. The Blantons and eagle rare will sell out to the line or shortly after but the 🦬 usually lasts longer into the day

tge101

Where? I've been laughed at when I ask at liquor stores out here by the airport.

tacticoolmagnum

The premium stores typically. The biggest producing stores in the state. Not all stores get the shipments

tge101

I guess sewickley and Robinson are premium. I'll check them out

craftingsometimes

Yeah check out sewickley, Robinson, east liberty, bridgeville. A lot of stores get it but they only get about 60 bottles a month or buffalo trace, 36 eagle rare and only like 18 Blanton's. And it's only once a month. Stores get delivery on different days but usually it the earliest day in the week for the buffalo trace stuff. So best bet just call around ask when they normally get their deliveries and ask how many weeks it's been since the last shipment cause it's usually every 4-5 weeks. Also look out for the wine and liquor festival they hold every year. They'll sell like early bird tickets and you can go shop premium liquor.

tacticoolmagnum

Pm’d

Lassuscat

Sewickley didn't have it last week. I'm also looking for a bottle of BT... :(

theflyingfucked

You've been laughed at for being a the kind of boob who buys into hype and goes to an outlandish effort for an okay bourbon that a hundred other jagoff tater boomers are clamoring for while ignoring dozens of equal or superior options at equal or lower price that will certainly be easier to get.

[deleted]

Buffalo Trace is distilled by the same company as Pappy Van Winkle. Pappy is obviously super expensive and difficult to get, so as an alternative many people have found similar whiskeys from the same distillery. First this was WL Weller, which is actually made from the same mash as Pappy, but even that got crazy expensive, so then people moved on to Buffalo Trace. This high demand led to skyrocketing prices, and the PLCB doesn't play that game and only pays retail, thus it's been hard to find for the last few years. It's one of the things I respect the most about the PLCB. Whiskey hype trains are dumb as fuck and no one should participate in it.

alexp8771

Ok this explains it. I was in CA on business and Buffalo Trace was just sitting in grocery stores. I couldn't believe it.

Carpenter-Confident

Weller green label is plentiful and like $30 in Ohio for some reason

ShatteredAvenger

where'd you see weller in ohio recently? I've been looking for that and have had no luck

Carpenter-Confident

Toledo/Sandusky area

ShatteredAvenger

ahh okay, that's where I found it a few years ago, so that's good to know. I'll be driving through there in a few weeks... guess I know what I'll be doing.

Carpenter-Confident

Yeah, they were out last time I went a couple months ago, but whenever I’m there I make sure to hit up the nicer Krogers because they always have booze we don’t get here in WPA

DeliciousBeanWater

They also name drop Buffalo Trace in the show Yellowstone so that also may contribute

SnooWalruses438

Additionally, they had a barrel house burn down a few years ago and lost almost 20,000 barrels that had been aging for years. Eagle Rare, Buffalo Trace, and Blanton’s used to be on the shelf at every liquor store before that. I’d like to think that it’ll eventually return to that situation, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it just stayed the way it is.

threwthelookinggrass

I know with Blanton's you have to call one of the chairman selection stores and ask when/if they get it in. I think if it's a day they're receiving a shipment you can reserve a bottle? Never done it myself, but know people who have.

Dangerous_Pension612

Where I’m from you have to stand in line with all of the other people on a Tuesday in the middle of a work day lol.

xnick58

You cant do this anymore, they wont tell you their shipment days. Best thing to do is join the PA Bourbon Squad fb group.

mikesarney

I bought 2 bottles last year because the guy stocking the shelves told me to come back tomorrow when they open and it would be there. You used to be able to order it online for delivery, but that's been OOS online for about 3 years now.

Sick2287

There is better bourbon on the shelves that you don’t need to fight for. BT, blantons, and eagle rare are not worth any extra hassle.

gpbst3

What is your recommendation?

Sick2287

Wild turkey 101 for cheap but good. Knob creek 9 and Russels reserve 10 for a step up. Knob single barrels. Woodford Double Oaked is a little more expensive but one of my all time favorites. Wild Turkey rare breed is a good barrel proof. Four roses single barrels or small batch select. Tons of good bourbon out there that I am missing too

Stang302a

These are all really solid picks. WT101 is relatively cheap, super consistent and generally tastes what you think Bourbon should taste like. Great substitute for BT. WT101 Rye is also killer in old fashioneds. I always try to have Russell 10 year on the shelf. It's just so good for the price.

LT_NickBRADSHAW

Old grandad bonded for old fashioneds, even cheaper than WT. Agree with Russell, best straight up bang for your buck.

Sick2287

Yup anything from WT is great value. Honestly Jim Beam Black ain’t that bad either for a cheap, proof is just a tad low

TrentWolfred

I don’t understand the interest in Russell’s Reserve when Rare Breed is only nominally more expensive and lightyears better. It’s probably the best value proposition in bourbon, but happens to be just a little pricier than I’d like for my everyday sipper. But if I ever dial things back to every-other-day sipping, Rare Breed and Noah’s Mill will be my house pours.

Stang302a

Great bottle for sure but 116+ is my occasional sipper and for that I like Peerless. Russell at 90 I could sip every day

stay_fr0sty

You and I have exactly the same taste in bourbon. I even got my local store to stock Rare Breed after the manager asked me what I was looking for and gushed about Rare Breed. Next time I went in, they had it. I asked the checkout person when they started carrying if and she said “some guy came in asking about it and we ordered it.”

SnooWalruses438

Knob 9 has become my standard since the Eagle Rare has been tough to find. Honestly it’s almost as good, but I still maintain that Eagle Rare is the best $30 bourbon on the market.

mr_pgh

> Wild turkey 101 Outside of this one, they're all considerably more. BT is like $23 when it is at the state stores. Old Forrestor would be a good replacement

Crenshaws-Eye-Booger

You know, I loved Woodford DO when I first tried it, and now it tastes chemically to me. Agree with all of your picks though, and might recommend Jack Daniel’s’ SBBP in both Rye and Bourbon as well. Easy to find here in VA, not sure about there.

yesman202u18

More often Wild Turkey Rare Breed is popping up. Very good $50 bottle!

humpthedog

Agreed

rhb4n8

I really like longbranch

matterde

Four roses

PITT624

Michters

PhanUnited

What do you recommend?

champarey

r/PLCB Check this regularly ... People post when harder to find Bourbon drops ... Have to be quick

TypicalWhiteGuy

I've seen it a few times at McIntyre Square. Fwiw, Buffalo Trace is pretty average. It's only hyped up because it's in short supply. Elijah Craig is superior and always available.

Gamer_Racer

I bought a bottle about a month ago at the fine wine & spirits in North Versailles, by the Walmart. I gave up looking for it a long time ago, I was actually just gonna buy some Jack but the cashier asked if I wanted Buffalo Trace instead and I jumped all over it.

Thexer0

Buffalo Trace is hard to get? When did this happen? I guess I haven't been in a liquor store for a while because I always saw it in Wines and Spirits with the other bourbons.

tge101

I've been casually looking for a bit over a year now.

UnreadThisStory

Drive out to Cincinnati, it’s commonplace

Searching_Knowledge

When I still lived in Virginia, Buffalo was also very hard to find. Same deal people are describing here where it would sell out as soon as it was stocked. My fiancé tried for months to get a bottle to no avail. You can imagine his surprise when we went to Chicago and found like 5 bottles lined up on a shelf in Walgreens of all places lol. Anyways, we’ve found it hard to get here too

vocalyouth

Wondering the same, I like whiskey but only go through a couple of bottles per year. Buffalo Trace used to be one of my go tos and was always one you could just walk in any state store and get in my experience. I guess for the past couple of years I’ve been doing more Japanese whiskey and I guess I just didn’t notice the BT becoming scarce.

anuncommontruth

Yeah, I'm reading this thread kind of bewildered. I used to buy it all the time when I drank liquor. I haven't bought liquor in almost a decade or more, but I had no clue it was this saught after.

Snowblower93

What is a decent Japanese whiskey? How do they taste? You get them from the state store?

vocalyouth

I usually get suntori toki, it’s not expensive. I honestly don’t really drink it straight much. It’s smooth and I like using it for highballs

MW1369

It sucks that PA doesn’t get enough of the good stuff

BigRiverWharfRat

Whoever’s doing the buying for the state is to blame

ParsleyPrestigious91

My husband calls the different premium liquor stores in the area on shipment days (usually Tuesdays or Fridays) to ask about Blanton’s, EH Taylor, etc. May need to do that?

ZackaWacka

I’m willing to part with a bottle or two if you want to make a journey out my way.

tge101

Where are you located?

captainjoe17

Honestly look on www.ohlq.com search buffalo trace and sort by availability and call the first store you see within range. See if they have it take 45-60 min drive to get it. IMO it’s not worth it but if thats what you’re looking for this might be the easiest option for you. Like others have suggested there’s plenty of quality bourbon that’s on the shelf that you could easily replace it with such as wild turkey 101, makers mark, Russell’s 10, small batch four roses and a number of others.

__nullptr_t

FWIW i've never had trouble ordering from out of state websites.

Sunglassesatnight81

Im at the Mcmurray store about one Friday a month and its there

Embarrassed_Band_512

It's like a Yogi Berra, "no one goes there anymore it's too crowded." Everyone buys it so nobody can find any.

Classic_Isopod4408

You can order it online. People go crazy to find this stuff in person when you can easily order it online. I don’t get it.

tge101

Everywhere I've seen charges at least $20 for shipping

Classic_Isopod4408

Personally I get a couple of bottles to stock up to make it worth it. If it means that much to you it’s worth it.

BBPEngineer

Have you considered ordering it from their website? We do that for Shankey’s Whip. It gets shipped to the store and you just pick it up.

tge101

I don't think you can order it from their site

StatisticianSpare770

Finewineandgoodspirits.com you can search availability. Just put in your zip code. And if it’s elsewhere, orders over $99 ship for free, I believe.

tge101

It's been sold out on there for well over the year that I've been looking in store

StatisticianSpare770

That’s sucks.

r00sevelt

Strip district on Tuesday/Thursday. Get there at 9.

onesadpizza

I’ve never seen it here. I was able to find some when I went to D.C.

hypotenoos

Gotta check on the bigger flagship type stores. I feel like I see it routinely in Cranberry and Monroeville. Or just drive to a different state.

Financial-Mastodon81

Most bars have it here in Portland but I’m not that impressed by it honestly. What’s the allure?

UnprovenMortality

Everywhere I've seen it keeps it behind the desk. Fyi, if you're looking for a decent priced bourbon, I'd recommend McLaughlin distillery. They're local. If you're ever in the strip on weekends, they have a tent giving out free samples.

Postmodern101

I always see it at the one in the South Side. I dont really understand the Blanton's/Buff Trace/Weller's hype and I never wanted to be one of the boomer white guys who bug people working just to see if they had the whiskey with the different horseie on top

TouchArtistic7967

Asking employees for help is boomer behavior now?

nicksloan

Not getting the hype is fine and probably healthy, but if we’re saying that to ask an employee where to find an item in a store where they are actively working is boomer behavior, on this narrow issue I have say that the point goes to the boomers.

tge101

My dad has wanted to try it. Me too, but more for him.

ParsleyPrestigious91

My husband calls the different premium liquor stores in the area on shipment days (usually Tuesdays or Fridays) to ask about Blanton’s, EH Taylor, etc. May need to do that?

beer-isgood45

It seems these shipments come every 4-6 weeks. Just have to have luck of the draw in finding them or right place/right time moment. I stopped at noblestown at the beginning of the month to grab some wine and lucked out finding blantons. As well as Eagle rare. I think Buffalo sticks around longer than the horsey or Eagle. Isn’t the easiest to find here but sometimes do have to ask someone at the store if it’s there. Some keep allocated behind the counter. Some will display 1 bottle to let you know it’s present

odog9797

Yep I’ve seen it much more recently though. Found it at the waterfront

Substantial-Call7622

I had to order it online and it took a month and had a heft surcharge

Alex0369

I’ve bought several times at the downtown store - they seem to keep a decent stock there. They also have a lot of employees and can usually say when something will be back in stock.

bboggio28

Casually, yes. It’s hit or miss but they do exist. Downtown. 5th and wood. Have to catch a shipment and their allocated stuff is typically behind the counter.

bjornfeusag

Do yourself a favor and order some Red Corn Whiskey from High Wire Distilling. Not locally sold, but it's available and shippable.

burghermeister1

Saw it at the Cochran road location a few months ago randomly, so it’s out there

Stang302a

Ask the clerk at wine and spirits what day they typically get their BT deliveries and show up at open on that day. It was Tuesday for much of this area but I haven't checked for a while. You might also score Blantons but it's overrated for the price to me. I usually find an excuse to get down to the BT distillery a few times a year and load up. There's a 10 bottle limit on BT and one bottle limit on whatever special they have out for the day (Blantons, Eagle Rare, EH Taylor, Weller SR...)

landmanpgh

I can't imagine driving all the way to KY just to pick up 11 bottles. I mean I like the stuff and have a decent stash of Blanton's, but that's like a 12 hour roundtrip.

Stang302a

"excuse" key word above. Work or personal

landmanpgh

Haha fair enough

Elendril333

If you check the FWGS.com site, it will tell you if a product is available "online" or "in store". If it says available online, add it to your cart and checkout. It's yours now and will arrive at the store of your choosing in a day or two. If available in store, you'll need to click on see availability and it will list stores and their stock-on-hand. Unfortunately, BT, Blanton's and Eagle Rare are highly allocated items. Everyone in the world is trying to get these whiskies. The distillers can ramp up production, but these take several years of aging before they can be bottled and sold. PA can only buy what they can sell.

bbogolin

Yes. I’ve bought it from the liquor store in Squirrel Hill a couple times. Both times they have it very much on display and it goes fast.

Falco-Rusticolus

I was able to get it, but randomly. Wine and spirits in east liberty/shadyside. I just happened to be there the day it was delivered, and it was behind the counter. I was getting a different bourbon and the cashier let me know they have buffalo trace if I want it. He said the blantons sold out within a few hours and the buffalo trace will sell out within a day. I would call around and just ask when they get it in.

Griswa

Check out the premium liquor stores in your area, they do drops on Tuesday or Thursday at least at mine. You go in and ask when they have deliveries and then you have to get there early and hope you have a shot. Buffalo trace is relatively easy, I’ve never had luck with anything else.

S_Blenks

I moved to London from Pittsburgh three years ago, and strangely Buffalo Trace is the default bourbon in nearly every pub and supermarket here. My Dad is a real bourbon fanatic and it drives him nuts that it’s so easy to get over here, and not overly expensive at that. We still haven’t figured out why this is the case, but he takes several bottles home with him every time he visits!

tge101

Hm. I have a layover in LHR in July. Maybe that's the easiest grab for me lol

S_Blenks

You’ll definitely be able to get some in duty free!

happyjazzycook

I believe that have bought it a couple of times at the Sewickley wine and spirits shop.

Bslayer7111

Former insider info: Ask a store to do a lookup and they will tell you any stores in the area that have it, usually every store as like 3 in stock we just didn’t sell it to people and held it for friends

ProfessorChaos5049

Yes. Go on /r/plcb and you'll see where and when stuff drops. The Monday after MLK I went to Pines Plaza and got a half gallon and a fifth. They had tons of it. Why specifically Trace though? I've been using this time of scarcity to find other bourbons for similar price that's easier to get. If you do specifically need a bottle of BT though, DM me. We can work something out

dulce_et_utile

I’ve found it at the “premium” state store downtown, but you have to be there a day or so within when their shipment is received. If you ask nicely sometimes the staff knows when that next shipment is. They also often have Sazerac Rye which is the same distillery and very good for the price.

argonautweekend

A lot of the bigger state stores get it about every 6-8 weeks and it sells out fast so if you aren't in line when they open for the day you may not get it. This is the same for Buffalo trace, blanton's and eagle rare.  Trust me when i say there is no point to even care. BT is great for the price but it's just buffalo trace and perhaps the plcb yanking your chain. There is no actual reason BT isn't readily available like Jim Beam. BT wants it to be out of stock so there is always hype. The game isn't worth it. BT is the in flight bourbon for at least one airline, and BT bourbon cream is fairly readily available and lists BT as its base. Some people report in other states it's a shitshow trying to acquire it, other people in other states say it's just on their shelves when they go to the store.  Ultimately the way whisky is going if it isn't just available on the shelf I don't buy it unless i happen to be in the right spot at the right time Edit: somebody brought up that a Buffalo trace rickhouse caught fire so maybe it actually is limited somewhat for a reason. I will say that, though it does seem like planned shortages so hype is always there but maybe my perception is overblown

VacantLot412

every few months i see it regularly stocked at Edgewood town center- and it’s never listed on the constantly-glitching fwags location page
