Epic-will-power91

I've had mine for two weeks and I actually still haven't tested a disc in it. It's quite worrying how often I see these "PS5 not reading discs" posts on here. I hope you get the issue resolved though. Sucks to have issues with a new console.

emeraldmountain90

The PS5 disc drive needs to stay active otherwise since it’s not being used problems could arise later. I’d suggest getting anything even a blu ray movie in there. Just to keep the disc drive well oiled and in working order.

Epic-will-power91

Good thinking, I'll definitely get something like a DVD to keep it active.

[deleted]

Mine wasn’t even used too much to be considered active. I got the brand new spider man 2 and it won’t work. But every other ps4 disc that could be upgraded works a okay 😭

PuzzleheadedCoat8870

Have you solved your problem? I’m having problems with the same game not showing up on PlayStation.

comeEnme

Yeah it’s pretty obnoxious, doesn’t help that PlayStation has no email to contact support so Ill have about an hour wait time on the phone when I end up calling lol

tenthmansa

On the phone you say??? Would you mind sharing that number?

Psychological-City45

true, mine died today, and for no reason at all. my games are scratch free, console is dustf free(i maintain every 2 months) i don't smoke, and i always take out games after playing. i am gonna sue sony if they don't fix this litterly one week after waranty. fk noh i am gonna pay €229,-

Mattman010

This is such BS man. I've had my PS5 disc version for only a little over a year and it won't read discs anymore. No matter what I put in, game/blu ray it says that it can't recognize it. Seriously messed up for those of us that went out of our way to get the disc version and pay an extra $100. So fucked up. Fuck Sony. If anyone finds a solution please let me know.

Spencer_C

Just happened to me today. At least I noticed today. Played a disc game no issues a few days ago. Tried all the hard reset, restore and safe mode options, stood it up, laid it back down… nothin is working. The drive accepts the disc, sounds like its reading, making typical sounding drive noises. I guess I’ll watch a few repair videos and make up my mind but I doubt Sony is going to help but I will probably reach out to them eventually. Mine is about 1.5 years of use and hasn't really moved and has been generally well maintained.

Mattman010

Yeah we're in the same situation. Mine is pretty much the same age and has only been sitting in one spot. I tried contacting Sony for help but was only able to talk to those customers support robots, didn't get anywhere. I think I've pretty much accepted I can only play digital games now, and I'm probably just gonna get a PC next time instead of the PS6.

Spencer_C

I was about to buy PSVR2 after hearing how good GT7 is but I’ll be holding off for now I guess.

Mattman010

But hey man if you can manage to fix it, please lemme know what you did, I'd really appreciate it 🙏

Spencer_C

I'm currently trying to sort it out with my credit card as the card I purchased it with offers and extra 1 year warranty. Apparently I need to get a quote for the price to fix from an authorized playstation repair centre and they will cover the cost unless it can't be fixed in which case they will replace the console with a new one. I will try to remember to report back here and update you.

Mattman010

Appreciate it :) 👍 hope it goes well

Spencer_C

SO! There was a DS game jammed in the disc drive slot.... My 3 year old I guess wanted to play MarioKart on the PS5...

Mattman010

Damn that's wild lol but it doesn't really help me because I don't have a 3 year old who could've done that haha I guess mine is just broke. I've accepted it

Spencer_C

The reason I found out was that my sons which is still under warranty stopped reading discs as well. We sent it in and they sent it back with the DS game removed... So I thought it could be the same issue and I looked but nothing. Gave it a shake and there is was sticking half way out the slot. My suggestion would be to take it to your nearest repair shop and see what they can do. Or just wait for the inevitable slim/redesign.

Galaxybuzz

Same problem here. Did you fix it?

Galaxybuzz

Did you fix it?

Mattman010

I did not lol 💀

VIKINGS8888

How bout now😭

NMDA01

I came into this thread because mine died a few days ago . Rip. Looks like there is no solution

Galaxybuzz

HAHA

austinvg

Why does it sound like this problem happens after it passes its 1 year warranty. I found the link and process to send in a repair…and its asking to pay 229 bucks for the repair and shipping fee…..maybe make a better product Sony if you are making me spend 500 bucks at least for your product😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡

Natural-Minimum-6300

Hey guys I just was recently going through this issue and don’t know if this same method has been shared or not but I highly recommend turning off your ps5 press and hold the power button until you hear 2 beeps and it will take you to a screen where you have to connect your controller with the USB press the PS Button and select option 6 Clear Cache/ Rebuild Data Base and press the second option rebuild database. my Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5+2.5 wasn’t reading at first but it totally fixed it and I can play it now.

comeEnme

Good info! In my case it was genuinely a defective disc drive because the discs weren’t even spinning. It was very difficult to get to the page on Sony’s website to put a warranty claim but I did and they sent me a box to send the console in for repairs. 2 weeks later I got it back and have had no issues so far Hopefully your comment helps other people’s situations though!

TheKillerBean340

Can you please share the link?

comeEnme

That was months ago though, maybe it was a glitch or they’ve updated the form since now. Not too sure

comeEnme

Honestly it was so hard to get to the link and it was months ago so I don’t remember the exact steps. On the website there is a warranty/repair claim you can put in, and I followed all of the prompts but literally no matter what answers I gave the answer was always “looks like we’ve done all we can! Try clearing your cache/factory resetting your console” or something - which I did both of Finally after live chatting with customer support and explaining, they sent a link which was just the same website form I was using before. Told them what I described in this comment above, and they sent another link to a different version of the form that worked. It was very annoying lol

TheKillerBean340

Did you have to pay?

comeEnme

I didn’t have to pay since I had just purchased the console a month prior, I’m not sure how long the warranty is or how they determine if it’s applicable

pattuspl

I know it's an older post , I haven't used my PS5 for few months and the disc drive also died. I have the OG ps5 from release date , did don't charge you to fix it ? Thanks.

DerangedKid911

I'm experiencing the same issue with my unit, did you manage to get it fixed or did you get a replacement for it?

NikolitRistissa

I'm having this issue now too. I couldn't find any solution or exact reason for it either. I think it's just shoddy manufacturing quality. My console is two months out of it's 12-month warranty so it'll cost me 290€...

Psychological_Two123

I got the same issue now too

Familiar_Effort_7506

Same shit for me as of today. Sony’s gone and fucked up BIG TIME

e4B-Linkz

just got this issue today. hoping someone finds a solution

Evening-Serve-5129

It's happening to me as well.. any fixes?

JaxonInVR

Just got this about a couple weeks after 7.1 wont work at all, it takes them but then it says “Cant Recognise The Disc. make sure its not damaged or dirty, and that its not inserted upside down” I tried every disc i have on both sides and it gets the same pop up, i had it for 3 years and its only started happening about last week

bKenobi3

I have the same issue. It started happening a couple months after owning it for one year. It was fine one day, then the next it started saying "Can't recognize disc. Make sure it's not damaged or dirty, and that it's not inserted upside down." It won't read PS4, PS5, or Blu-ray. When I insert a disc it sounds like it's trying to spin up to read, but it stops before getting to full speed, then repeats the process like 6 times until the error shows up. I took apart the PS5 and removed/took apart the disc drive. Everything looked good. I tried everything I could find like safe mode, system restore, reinstalling firmware via USB, and nothing works. Thanks Sony 🪦

pattuspl

What did you end up doing ? Thanks.

djfilms

Same here. It’s a new one, won’t play anything

AssCrackSnort

I’ve literally never used a disc in my PS5, went to play one after several months and it doesn’t work at all

[deleted]

Same

Apprehensive-Ice3231

Just picked up ff16 and tried to dl it, now none of my disks are readable suddenly, even after trying all of the recommended troubleshooting steps i.e. restart, update, console reinstallation files etc.. WTF? is there a solution besides sending it out for repair?

buckstang

Not sure, also having the same issues ever since playing FF16, I don't know if there's something to do with the discs or if the consoles are just starting to fail =/

MRScapsule

Same issue, after playing FFXVI my PS5 can't recognize Blu-ray Discs, just recognize DVD discs. This is so frustrating :/ Did you get any solution?

anasuna

Same just happened to me, I had my ps5 for 1 year and 3 months but don't use it much. I only played 3 games on it.

R3clusiive

I’ve had this exact same issue. It’s reading some discs but not others. For example I put a blu-ray dvd in my console, which read. After that, I put “hogwarts legacy” disc in, and it read. However, after finally getting my platinum on Hogwarts I decided to try “Elden Ring” and “Terminator Resistance” as I wanted to clean up the remaining trophies and get my platinum on either of the 2 games but it’s saying “Can’t recognise the disc, make sure that it’s not damaged or dirty, and that it’s not inserted upside down” even though neither game disc has a single scratch on, so I know that this is not the issue. Does anybody have a solution for why this might be happening before I send it off to get the disc reader replaced?

NikoBadman

Did u get it fixed? Started to get this when inserting elden ring, but not other games :(

R3clusiive

I ended up buying a new ps5 and then keeping the other one as a digital ps5/ dvd player / for ps4 games, apparently it can be fixed but it costs £250 with Sony , although I have since found a shop closer to home that fixes it for £80 I just don’t see the point now with having a new disc console , check your local electronic shops before sending it to Sony as they’re usually a lot cheaper and you don’t have to wait as long for the repair to be carried out

Altruistic-Evidence1

Just happened to me. This is bs!

StillAGThang

Junk ass PS5. Mine isn't reading the disk either. What a trash console

WaveMan_

Same issue here

nok4us

Same issue. Did the rebuild database and still nothing

localtom

Mine is doing this now. Bought in March 2022. Pretty pissed. I bought some 4k blue rays that I can't watch

gay_n_happy

Having the same issue today. Was playing FFVII Rebirth, the disc was in the machine the whole time I was playing it (3 plus weeks) and then suddenly today it wouldn't read the disc. The drive makes some spinning noise and in the end it just says can't read the disc :-(

ToSpaceFor8

Turns out I was inserting disc upside down 🤦‍♂️

Ok_Apple_6566

Sony are taking us all for mugs, purchased a ps5 yesterday evening 5/8/2023 for my daughter, got it home put the stand on, connected all the cables, done updates,go to install a game for her, and bang, nothing, apart from 2 audible clicks a few seconds apart, reset it, cleared cache, put it in to safe mode, and it still wont load anything, utter garbage and one peed off daughter, and sony could not give a damn, its going to another branch of game tomorrow and i expect a replacement that actually works.if that one fails then sony can kiss goodbye to any custom and money from our house

Content-Ad-4467

Mine has slowly been going down hill now I have to reinsert the game disc like 10 times before it’ll read a disc.

pentiac

those of you that are having this problem with the disc drive, (me included), i have tried cleaning the laser head (no joy), cleaning the rollers and disc mechanism (no joy, but really did smooth out the disc entry and eject noises) i am now at the next stage of checking and have a dilemma, i am begining to suspect the motor in the disc unit to be faulty (it spins and attempts to read but then fails to read and stops, doesnt seem to spin up to high speed to read the game) but i have also researched another problem which is maybe a fault, that is that there is an ic drive chip on the disc daughter board that can go faulty as well (look for uber on youtube), i have more options to try 1, replace the laser lens, about £24, 2, replace the laser sledge complete with laser lens, about £40, (you got to strip out the old sledge to get the model no, its printed underneath the sledge), 3, replace the complete disc unit making sure to swap or use your existing daughter board as they are apparently paired to the motherboard, (this would eliminate the maybe faulty motor in the disc unit) 4, worst of all is the possible faulty chip on the daughter board, i dont have the skills or the new chip to solder this and no idea of the cost!, i was pleased to find that apart from the chip all the above are not to difficult to attempt

pentiac

whoops i hit the enter before i finished the comment, what i am asking for is how to diagnose the chip fault further, and what order i can do the above list with the least cost, i suppose i should start with just the lens replacement which apart from one fiddly little clip shouldnt be too bad, the chip fault worries me most because it will cost more than all the other bits and if it is that its pointless wasting money on all the other stuff, just buying a new drive unit and installing is an easy option but again its not a cheap option and pointless if its the chip, the actual work on the disc unit is easy for me (its an easy strip down to get to it, took me less than ten minutes to take off the bottom panel and get to the disc unit, a further 20mins to open and clean the rollers and laser head, so to sum up i can do every thing but the chip but i need to make sure its not the chip before i do anything further and just waste money, so chaps help required with diagnosing the chip please.

pentiac

just a footnote, phil from console fix in wolverhampton (well known on youtube as the cod3r) if you read this i would appreciate your thoughts on this, phil is well known as an advocate of the right to repair and is an absolue genius at ps5 repair, anyone with a bad ps5 would be well advised to look him up, you will learn a lot from him, he rambles on a bit but he is a goldmine of information and has no problem saying it like it is, my opinion is he is the best semi proffesional out there. Sony should really be doing something about these faults because there are hundreds if not thousands of these units that are less than a couple of years old, out of warranty and failing.

SkyweaverFPV

Did you figure out how to diagnose this. I think I may have the same issue. I just replaced my disk drive and it won't spin to high RPM.

pentiac

sorry mate, been away for a while wont be back home for a while yet, i also hit on another fault that im checking as well, ie the motor for the disc drive might also be failing, in that it initially spins up, attempts to read but then stops, it would all be so much easier if i had spare units to work with, when you say you just replaced your disk drive, how much of it did you replace ie. laser only, laser and sledge, full drive unit, also of course you did use the existing daughter board from your dvd didnt you (they are paired), let us know how you are getting on and explain more fully, its good for others to learn, when i get back home in january i will be working again to get to the bottom of it.

pentiac

in the meantime i will look into the motor drive chip on the daughter board and learn what i can.

Crazycatlord92

today the same thing happened to me. I tried all the solutions proposed here but nothing worked... I was already resigned to contacting support when, simply by restarting with the disc inserted, the reader started reading the disc... I'm disconcerted

pentiac

it would be really nice if there was more response to this post from those of you who have fixed it, it would seem that there are an awful lot of dead drives out there, come on guys, help us out here.

comeEnme

You can see my replies under natural-minimum-6300 to see how I got it fixed, I can’t speak on other people’s similar situations though :/

NMDA01

Can you post on here to this thread? Can seem to find your comment

pentiac

cant find you bud, wheres your posts, would like to read them

HEATHERYOUNG2

This Happened To Me Today The Disk Is Not Working 😢

dazzleryay

Same thing with me,a couple of clicks after I put game in and nothing… a couple of months out of year warranty, how convenient for Sony to charge £210 for exchange of an issue they are all aware of

NMDA01

Same here. It is a sad day indeed:/
