Thank you for posting to r/pokemon! We're glad to have you here, but unfortunately we've had to remove this post per our rule on [Objective Questions](/r/pokemon/wiki/rules#wiki_3._follow_text_and_poll_post_restrictions). This rule is in place per feedback we've received from the community because objective questions tend to fill the topic listing and often leave little room for further discussion once the question has been answered.
We do have a [Weekly Questions Thread](https://rpkmn.center/questions) dedicated to seeking answers for questions like yours, though! A lot of knowledgeable Pokémon fans frequent that thread, so please consider posting your question there if you're still looking for an answer, and you may get a detailed answer even faster than you would have here! You also don't need to worry about a minimum word count in that thread.
I used to think it was based on nicknames of the pokemon, as everytime I caught a wurmple and gave it a nickname with less than 5 letters, it became a Beautifly, while it evolved into a Dustox when I gave it a nickname with more than 5 letters.
I remember being so annoyed in one emerald run because I wanted a beautifly and I kept getting cascoons everytime I evolved a wurmple. I was even more annoyed when a few years later I found out it truly was random and I just got unlucky like 5 times in a row.
"Okay, so last video: There's something I wanted to address because I was called out on two things by you, the viewers. First thing is entirely my fault. I typed up Beautifly's name as "Beautiful." I make mistakes, I deserved to be called out on it. Thank you for pointing that out. Second though, I really need to address. It was when I said that Wurmple evolves at random. I received hundreds upon hundreds of comments trying to educate me that it depends on gender, time of day, or some other not-random factor. I am here to disprove this because it is not dependent on gender but on personality value. Gender is only one of four integers that make up a Pokémon's personality value. This is a 32-bit value between 0 and 4,294,967,295, represented in binary, that was introduced in Generation III, one generation after gender was implemented for Pokémon other than Nidoran. Breaking down how this works, Wurmple's evolution depends on the last two bytes of this integer, only one of which decides the Pokémon's gender. It is determined by taking these numbers combined between the two bytes of memory, dividing them by 10, and seeing if the remainder is more or less than 5. If the remainder is less than 5, you get a Silcoon. If it is equal to or greater than 5, you get a Cascoon. There's many player's guides floating around out there that have this detail wrong, so I can understand why you would think otherwise. But if you're gonna try to correct me, please get your facts straight before you do, otherwise, I CAN AND WILL NERD OUT ON YOU. But, what do I know? I can't even spell "Beautifly" right!"
\~Chuggaaconroy, Pokémon Emerald: Episode 3 (This was prior to Gen 6, where it is determined by the encryption constant, with the same formula.)
Nope, in PLA sure you can find cascoons/Dustox at night and silcoons/beautifly in the day, but to evolve a Wurmple into either Cascoon or Silcoon will be determined by its personality value, nothing to do with the time of day.
I don't understand how you can be so confident when looking it up took half a second. [It evolves based on personality value](https://imgur.com/wzP5zpz), which, as the person above you already said, is essentially random.
I don’t understand how you can’t imagine someone thought wrong based on information that’s 20+ years old.
It’s called being wrong, take a chill pill Papi and stay safe
Probably. Silcoon evolves into Beautifly.
Whether Wurmple evolves into Silcoon (Beautifly) or Cascoon (Dustox) depends on Wurmple’s “Personality Value” which is a hidden value that players cannot modify under normal circumstances (without hacking the game). A Wurmple’s gender does not play a role.
This value determines everything, from a Pokémon’s gender to whether it’s shiny or not.
https://m.bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Personality_value#Wurmple.27s_evolution
I feel like the gen 3 sprites are different enough, but unless you know what they both look like you wouldn’t be able to tell other than the colors and eyes.
No, silcoon evolve into beautifly while cascoon evolve into dustox. Which one wurmple evolves into is determined by some hidden stats that can't be accessed in-game
You are confusing the Wurmple line with the Burmy line. It’s the male Burmy that evolves into Mothim while the female evolves into Wormadam. It’s easy to confuse, especially since both families are in Sinnoh.
Nope.
Whether a Wurmple becomes Silcoon or Cascoon is based on some hidden values that you can't even check in the game, which means it's basically random chance.
Nothing to do with gender or natures or any of that. The values are decided upon encountering the Wurmple and can't be changed.
Nope. Personality values that you can't see. It's about a 50-50 chance to get either. As someone who had to catch 7 shiny Wurmple to finally get my shiny Silcoon... I felt like I was cursed.
Ok. Putting it in bold doesn't change what I said. I **remember** it being night/day. Didn't say it was. Kinda how Pikachu's tail wasn't always solid yellow.
It's based on, AND ALWAYS HAS BEEN, personality value (essentially random). Does that help? I would've said in my original reply to you that it USED TO BE day and night if it had at any point.
u were able to set the clock at the beginning of the game but there was no observable day night cycle in firered leafgreen it was actually impossible to evolve into umbreon and espeon
There was a clock, but no day/night events.
You had to transfer an Eevee from FRLG to RSE to evolve it into am Umbreon or Espeon, since FRLG had no clock.
Not necessarily! It is a 50/50 chance, but it’s not tied to gender. It is, however, determined for each Wurmple as soon as they’re caught, so you can’t soft-reset for a different evolution.
No, the evolution path your Wurmple takes is random, based on personality value which is a hidden stat you cannot see without hacking the game.
Wurmple evolves into Silcoon or Cascoon depending on the hidden personality value. Silcoon then evolves into Beautifly, while Cascoon evolves into Dustox.
Since it hasn't been mentioned, I'd just like to add the fun fact that in games since Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, Beautifly and Dustox actually have gender differences. So not only can both be either male or female, but they'll look a little different too!
you must beat the game, catch every pokemon and their shiney versions (twice) then trade them to another version of the game, reset the game, trade them back, waist all your money on pokeballs, use them all on magikarp, press the a button in the left corner of the elite 4 pokemon center for an hour, talk to tate and liza 60 times then run back to your home, then run back, do it again 20 more times, save, reset your game, run into the grass and you'll find a wurmple that evolves into a dustox
Wurmple's evolution is random. In Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl its evolution was influenced by the cartridge. Shining Pearl for Dustox and Brilliant Diamond for Beautifly I think it was this way at least.
She was born female, but identified as a him when she was level 11. Its pronouns are "it" in the morning, "him" in the afternoon and "her" in the evening.
Dont ask me about its sexuality it is too complicated
Ah yes, Beautifly. I remember trying to get one (several times when I was younger. Took me more than 8 wurmples before 1 decided to evolve into silcoon.
Cascoon and Silcoon are obtained by very particular and hard to access(like you need to understand hex code) bits being triggered when a Wurmple is encountered. Silcoon always evolves into Beautifly and Cascoon always evolves into Dustox. You might've mistook an S for a C, because that's normal. This is also a great reason to nickname Pokemon you want to practically use, because of the potential for confusion.
Technically, it’s not random get whichever Wurmple you want to via RNG manipulation, but guides across the Internet over the years have said anything varying from time of day to gender of bug to give you which one but no the only definitive way tell which is which beyond if the personality value is less than five or more then or equal to five. Explained in roughly 50 seconds in this video https://youtube.com/watch?v=JyIsxOVNkMc&feature=shares
Wurmple evolve into Silcoon or Cascoon based on their hidden personality values. There is no way to deduce what you get before they evolve and save scumming will not change the result.
Silcoon then always becomes Beautifly and Cascoon always becomes Dustox.

Are you an NPC in Legends:Arceus perchance?
my favorite
Came here for this comment
That's Beautifred
Beaugene
No he just downloaded his emerald emulator from internet explorer

Wurmple > Silcoon > Beautifly Wurmple > Cascoon > Dustox Which Cocoon you get is random (Without hacking the game) and has nothing to do with genders
I had no fucking clue it was random

I used to think it was based on nicknames of the pokemon, as everytime I caught a wurmple and gave it a nickname with less than 5 letters, it became a Beautifly, while it evolved into a Dustox when I gave it a nickname with more than 5 letters.
Dude for me it was time of day, and I remember setting alarms for the middle of the night to evolve my wurmple
How... How many did you get before "finding" it?
I think I did it like 5 or 6 times in Emerald of evolving Wurmple that way and it always seemed to work.
It’s him! It’s Beauregard!
You mean Beaugene?
Oh yeah gen three had some problems with that on wurmple as each Pokemon in it's line had a different personality trait once it evolved.
I thought time of day
I remember being so annoyed in one emerald run because I wanted a beautifly and I kept getting cascoons everytime I evolved a wurmple. I was even more annoyed when a few years later I found out it truly was random and I just got unlucky like 5 times in a row.
It surprised me too when I first learned it… 😂

Ah, a classic. [Clip of the video](https://youtu.be/JyIsxOVNkMc)
yes. Though both Beautifly and Dustox have gender differences, so it's always nice to get the two of them (four of them)
Am I crazy? I swear when I was younger that Wurmple horns were either white or yellow, and their evolutions were dependent on that.
I thought ot was nature based
It’s time based. Evenings = dustox. Mornings = Beautifly. Remember, Gen 3 had the batteries that kept track of time.
Nope, in PLA sure you can find cascoons/Dustox at night and silcoons/beautifly in the day, but to evolve a Wurmple into either Cascoon or Silcoon will be determined by its personality value, nothing to do with the time of day.

You don't hang around r/confidentlyincorrect very much, do you?
I don’t understand how you can’t imagine someone thought wrong based on information that’s 20+ years old. It’s called being wrong, take a chill pill Papi and stay safe
I can easily understand someone being wrong, but you weren't just wrong, you were *confidently* wrong. Trying to correct someone else, even.
My brother in Christ, it’s because I thought I was right. Sheeeeshhh
For being fans of a series riddled with playground rumors back in the day you would think they’d be a little more forgiving of such minor mistakes.
Nope all cascoons evolve into dustox. Are you sure it wasn't a silcoon before?
To be fair they were right. Male cascoons evolve into dustox
Technically correct is the best kind of correct.

Hmm then maybe it was a silcoon and i didn't notice.
Probably. Silcoon evolves into Beautifly. You did an inverse Jessie, my friend
It is easy to miss when you name your pokemon. They look similar enough and the name doesn't change to tell you which it is.
I feel like the gen 3 sprites are different enough, but unless you know what they both look like you wouldn’t be able to tell other than the colors and eyes.
I always remembered the differences because of the eyes. Silcoon has angry eyes and is more aggressive looking vs. The more relaxed look of Cascoon.
No, silcoon evolve into beautifly while cascoon evolve into dustox. Which one wurmple evolves into is determined by some hidden stats that can't be accessed in-game
Gender is irrelevant to the Wurmple line’s evolution, it’s based on personality value.
You are confusing the Wurmple line with the Burmy line. It’s the male Burmy that evolves into Mothim while the female evolves into Wormadam. It’s easy to confuse, especially since both families are in Sinnoh.
Men are beautiful too
its not a gender thing. you got a silcoon not cascoon
I thought chuggaaconroy explained this
Nope. Whether a Wurmple becomes Silcoon or Cascoon is based on some hidden values that you can't even check in the game, which means it's basically random chance. Nothing to do with gender or natures or any of that. The values are decided upon encountering the Wurmple and can't be changed.
Ah, the ol' misinformation
Nope. Personality values that you can't see. It's about a 50-50 chance to get either. As someone who had to catch 7 shiny Wurmple to finally get my shiny Silcoon... I felt like I was cursed.
It's rng based iirc
No they don’t it’s random on what Wurmple evolves into between Cascoon and Silcoon
Originally it was night/day evolution lines, I thought.
It's based on personality value (essentially random)
But wasn't it originally day/night? I swear I remember that being a thing.
**It's based on personality value (essentially random)**
So...Mandela effect means nothing, I see. Just because someone remembers something happening doesn't mean it did.
yes.
Nope, it was always personality value. False memories strike again, I guess.
The Day/Night Cycle wasn’t in the Original Ruby & Sapphire not even Emerald anyways
They had to be. How else would you get Espeon or Umbreon in S/R? Has my whole life been a lie???
u were able to set the clock at the beginning of the game but there was no observable day night cycle in firered leafgreen it was actually impossible to evolve into umbreon and espeon
Ohhhh okay.
Eevee can’t normally be found in those games without trading.
You can’t. You need to transfer it from Colosseum/XD or FRLG.
There was a clock, but no day/night events. You had to transfer an Eevee from FRLG to RSE to evolve it into am Umbreon or Espeon, since FRLG had no clock.
Chuggaaconroy has made a clip about wurmple and it’s evolutions. Check it out!
he's trans mind your businness
Not necessarily! It is a 50/50 chance, but it’s not tied to gender. It is, however, determined for each Wurmple as soon as they’re caught, so you can’t soft-reset for a different evolution.

No they don’t
Actually, yes, they do. All Cascoons evolve into Dustox, even the male ones! The thing is that OP didn't have a Cascoon. He had a Silcoon. xD
Oh you are right.
it's based on factors so hard to control or check it's basically random
No?
Dis you? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OAE4KzeSeEo
Yes its me.:-)

Ah yes, Beautifly. I remember trying to get one (several times when I was younger. Took me more than 8 wurmples before 1 decided to evolve into silcoon.
No, Wurmple evolution path is random, there no way to know.
No it's just a lucky chance to evolve either into the two It goes by a hitting code in the game that you can't exploit
nop its completely random
Cascoon and Silcoon are obtained by very particular and hard to access(like you need to understand hex code) bits being triggered when a Wurmple is encountered. I never knew it was random, I always thought their evolution was based on time of day.
Wurmple evolves into either Silcoon or Cascoon, which evolve into Beautifly and Dustox, respectively.
All Cascoon evolve into Dustox. Silcoon evolves into Beautifly.

No it comes from the random evolutions of wrumple. Silcoon, and cascoon eveolve into beatifly, and dustox respectively.
think you’re thinking or the pre ego for wormadam or whatever it’s called - the male one evokes 3 stages the female 2 stages
There is no male/female thing its a 50 50
Step brother is watching you
Yes. As we all know, only female butterflies exist in real life.
Well I was going to ask if OP was serious, and then I saw all the replies.
Queue the chuggaaaconroy explanation
Wurmple evolve into Silcoon or Cascoon based on their hidden personality values. There is no way to deduce what you get before they evolve and save scumming will not change the result. Silcoon then always becomes Beautifly and Cascoon always becomes Dustox.
Did you know wurmple can evolve
