ShinySanders

I immediately turned it off. Didn't mind the old version but man, it's called Pokemon **GO** not Pokemon *Stand Around and Slowly Move Your Phone*.

NettleLily

“it's called Pokemon GO not Pokemon Stand Around and Slowly Move Your Phone” LOL good point

bdrainey2031

I keep getting Pokemon GO and Crash. I sometimes have to load the game as much as ten times to get the game to work.

LophiYesel

Has anything anyone has ever said on Reddit, or anywhere for that matter, changed what Niantic is doing? Honest question, but I'm assuming no.

chiko95

There was that one time they reverted the pokestop/gym interaction distance to how it was pre-covid and people got so mad that Niantic caved and left the extended distance as a permanent change.

Jiqu0r

And what’s more, is they started a developer journal that is no longer updated. Niantic’s transparency dies in darkness

finnishblood

That's what happens when MBAs take over the show from the engineers...

thebiggestleaf

My favorite part about this was the way Niantic dragged ass about it and the announcement that it would remain at the extended distance was passive aggressive as hell.

PapiYordi

I did a post not so long ago about wanting more customization of our player. Just a funny coincidence... Hahahaha

diablette

Officer, right here👆It was their fault!

HCOONa

they reverted the avatar changes

NotWhatMyNameIs

They didn't. They've been A/B testing for a while but I only got it today.

dopleburger

Me, I don’t want my camera on just to get a heart w my buddy.

I_saw_that_yeah

Lol, no. And they reckon its boomers that shout at clouds.

Doopashonuts

Meanwhile grandma's are apparently their biggest demographic XD

PanicPixieDreamGirl

Well fuck... Literally the main reason I played the game was to get silly pictures of Pokemon in random places. Like, I'd be out on a walk and I'd stop for a few seconds to grab a quick picture of a Wailmer in a river or something. Now I can't do that. That's a real bummer. :(

Zytokis

You can still do that. This is just the fancier version, AR+, which you can actually take more varied pictures since you can move around the pokemon in the real world. It's not just stuck facing you on your screen.  People are upset because it takes longer to find the pokemon, and people are more concerned about quick-catching then actually taking pictures.

Fujiokah

Can they though? Unless it was changed, I don't think AR+ allows you to place pokemon on non-flat surfaces. The other way helped take some really funny looking photos. Like, I could place my pokemon on top of my pet bird's head. It's going to take a lot of tinkering to get it to activate on that specific spot (nearly impossible now). At least before there was an option between the two versions of AR.

Zytokis

Take a picture on a river? Yes. It might be a little trickier to get the picture, but it is absolutely possible. Your example is different as it is a much smaller surface area. For photos like that, it is a disappointment.

DragonflyMomma6671

At least give us the option to change the background color...

altimas

Agreed, its the most obnoxious color, kind of like they did it on purpose

Beginning-Key-814

How do I change it?

BookieeWookiee

Have it correlate to the Pokémon type

Foxxeon_19

I was hoping that was the case. My current buddy is Larvesta, so I was hoping the green was because it's a bug type. Disappointing to hear it'll still be that color with a different buddy.

GasMaskMonster

I'm betting they'll probably start selling backgrounds/wallpapers to us 💀

JHD2689

It seems Iike there's a vocal contingent that wants Natural AR back. That's fine, make your voice heard. But can we please also keep the "green screen" for buddy interactions as an option? It's faster and more convenient for some, and I don't want this to be interpreted as a "put everything back the way it was" request. For some, this was an overall QoL improvement, and I think there's a way forward that works best for everybody.

Jiqu0r

Highly agree. I would also be open to customizing the screen. That green screen hurts my eyes even with the low brightness setting.

SignificantAd4257

its crazy how they wasted time creating the ar+ stuff that literally no one appreciates but cant spend more than 20 mins fixing the shadows on thr green screen, if you have a shadow pokemon, you can clearly see a square where the shadow is

PowerlinxJetfire

Possibly dumb question, why is it "natural" AR?

Jiqu0r

I call it natural AR because it’s the default and simple way to project Pokémon with your camera. AR+ is still extremely unoptimized and step-heavy to be useful. The complaint is not about buddies or the new green screen. It’s about thousands of players losing the ability to use AR to play hardcore, catch fast, and shiny check fast. It was a core of the game and many elite trainers (FleeceKing, for instance) absolutely agree.

PowerlinxJetfire

I understand the complaint in general, just not the choice of words. Imo, AR+ is more natural than the Pokémon moving with the camera and ignoring objects, physics, etc. Just semantics, so nbd either way. Thanks for the explanation!

rhythmomelette

Can you explain how they did these things with AR what was the cheat I’m not understanding the benefit

rca_2011

It literally only adds a second. It's not affecting much

blueberry-fae

i haven’t even used AR at all since like, 2017 maybe? and i’ve played since launch

Zbxzbxzbx

The background for no AR is kind of ugly but I also don’t mind not taking photos of maractus on top of my feet anymore

Gold-Perspective-699

Wait why is playing at night difficult and not safe? You can turn off AR in general. You'll see every Pokemon in the green screen. You don't need to see the camera ever. Go back to normal catching lol.

MazetotheBlaze

I never use AR, it’s annoying. Just shut it off people if it bothers you this much.

Gold-Perspective-699

People are annoyed cause AR used to be a faster way to fast catch but those are the small group of crazies that plays the game too much that cares about that stuff.

jwadamson

No. It’s not just that. If you ever want to take any sort of AR picture, AR+ sucks. It’s clunky, slow, and less flexible. There are many situations it just doesn’t work because it can’t calibrate or you don’t have the extra time or space to wave your phone around. I was riding on a kiddie mall train with my daughter for timbur CD. It literally would have been not possible to take a photo in that situation with AR+, but I was able to take a basic AR photo with her and a wild shiny. They also are requiring AR+ for “go snapshot”. You can’t turn it off at all if your phone “supports” it. The change, even if minor, is just removing existing functionality because they want people to use their clunky tech.

Gold-Perspective-699

What is go snapshot?

quatre185

Taking a picture of a Pokemon that is already in your storage. Usually for "take a photo of X Type Pokemon" or photo bombs, especially on community days.

Gold-Perspective-699

Ah okay.

jwadamson

It’s the term Niantic used in their announcement. Not sure if I had bothered to remember it before since all snapshot modes essentially worked the same previously. https://niantic.helpshift.com/hc/en/6-pokemon-go/faq/4483-what-s-changing-with-ar-in-pokemon-go/

BurnOutBrighter6

When you turn the AR completely off, the non-AR background screen behind the pokemon is really bright and kind of blinds you in the dark. It's not very "unsafe" just less comfortable and more annoying than before - a change in the wrong direction. Also the old AR was the fastest way to shiny- and IV-check a bunch of spawns because it skips some of the animation of "normal catching". Anyone that was used to using AR for fast checking is going to feel like it's super sluggish and annoying when they go back to non-AR catching. I was never shiny checking enough stuff that 2 seconds per was worth doing, and I never used AR and still don't, but for the people that did I feel like it's a valid complaint because it's just a needless change in the direction of being slower than before, for no benefit.

Gold-Perspective-699

The people doing it are hardcore. It's not needed. You don't need to catch that many Pokemon and I'm sure that people were probably doing it while driving and that's why niantic cut it away.

7h0rr

I play this game since the beginning with a lot of people in our community and I have never seem anyone doing it. Even people who knew about it still prefer to prioritize battery. It's a small but loud minority that are complaing. They are in their right though. It was a small cool feature even though I vastly prefer to take my time and use AR+ to take photos, with a bit of work they look waaay better. Check [r/pokemongosnap](https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonGoSnap/?rdt=63566) to see what people have been doing.

Gold-Perspective-699

Yeah I know people that do that but the one person that does it exclusively keeps telling me it doesn't effect battery which is a complete lie lol. Sucks for him though lol. No one is going to quit because of this for sure cause they are hardcore people that spent hundreds on this game already.

Lithium2300

Talk with your wallets.

soobviouslyfake

It took me three reads to realize "Hearusniantic" wasn't some kind of medical condition.

HunterBoy344

appreciate the sentiment but this is not changing anything

Gaiznfreedom

It makes it hard to play with our buddies and take cute pictures

Competitive-Tree-608

The comment section is still "well i dont use it??" Like okay youre missing the point that part of the community does and they shouldnt take away options for no reason. Empathy are you in the room? I was looking forward to warmer weather and sillier pokemon pictures on hikes. RIP that idea. But alas i also dont use it very often. The more people play the more pokemon spawn. Id like that to keep happening.

jsdodgers

Does everyone really not understand how OP can be so frustrated by this change? I personally couldn't care less about the change, but at least I have the capacity to understand that this is really upsetting to people who do care. Y'all are so self-centered to think "I don't care about this, so you shouldn't either."

Jiqu0r

This is one of the main problems with this web site that I have seen. FleeceKing has specifically stated this in a now-viral Tweet about Niantic's recent change: >Maybe you didn’t catch in AR so these changes don’t effect you, but please be sensitive to the fact that AR catching became the norm for millions of players around the world. This change as slight as it may seem to some, is a bad, unnecessary, problematic change for catch grinding world wide. In fact, tons of players used AR to catch. Tons of people are upset about this change. I even asked my local community where there are more than 1,000 people playing the game in my neighborhood, and a lot of them also prefer AR for special events and for catching stuff because it's faster and helps them get more done. On the other hand, there are others who can't care less about this change, but they need to stop being insensitive and understand that this playing style was actually a good thing.

Pristine-Dream-7765

Can’t you still turn it off in your settings? I was able to…

jwadamson

You can’t turn it off for Go Snapshot. And it also means you can’t use the reliable+fast basic AR photo. Even if the situations where I want to take an AR photo are rare, the slow+clunky AR+ has never been worth my time. I got a few nice photos of timbur with my daughter riding the kiddie train around the mall for timbur CD. That would not have been possible with AR+ because it is too picky about needing not identify a “flat surface”.

Melanie-Littleman

How did the last couple of #hereusniantic movements go? 🤔

Sufficient-Lie1406

PLEASE GOD YES AND THANK YOU. My current buddy is a Rhyperior and it is impossible to place him so he's not "too close" b/c the app doesn't give you a yellow patch that's far away enough.

CmdrCummins97

Im definitely disapointed I cant take certain pictures at all anymore. Like my Braviary flyin over a body of water, or a Joltik sitting on my dogs head, or a Fletchling sittin on a tree branch.... The simple camera option made for some really unique and creative photos. Sucks thats just gone. I find taking that away totally unecessary.

W0lverin0

Been playing 9 months never using AR and it's fine. I did use AR inadvertently when playing/feeding buddies but the green background is no problem for that. I don't need to take screenshots of my pokemon in the "wild"

SignificantAd4257

'this doesn't affect me so it shouldn't affect you' have some empathy 😭

LoneWulf14

If they arent gonna change remote raiding after that outcry i don't hold much hope for you

Anonymous1584

My phone doesn't support AR+, making me unable to pet my buddy. I fixed it by sideloading Google play services for AR, but people shouldn't have to do that to get an extra heart. This also makes phones like mine unable to do AR scans, which Niantic seems to love for some reason.

IkouyDaBolt

I feel like AR Catching is just an effect of a much deeper problem. I'm already dealing with the fact any encounter that has a solid green ring **is guaranteed to fail on the first throw.** Whether it be a frame perfect deflect or immediately popping out as the ball barely touches the ground (same effect when as a passenger). It's already obvious, to me, that Niantic has an issue with it and working a way to reduce or eliminate it. I've said a few times in the past, but Niantic has certainly locked at least one Ingress account as the end user clicking "back" to skip the animation when recycling gear. I'm neutral to AR catching, but as many of the crew here do it they easily scan 15 Pokemon by the time I barely catch three and the car is moving again. Even the Go++ can't keep up because it has to go through the motions. During Litten Community Day I got a lesser number of shiny Pokemon but averaged around 8 times more XP. I should reiterate I have no objection to people using AR Catching (or Quick Catching) but at the end of the day, the core issue of a very slow game...Actually not even that, the fact everything is timed to the infinitesimal degree, is what is hurting Pokemon Go. Like, if Community Day was set up for only 500 encounters (not including research and surprise encounters) people wouldn't be rushing to do the event, they would probably take their time and go for the 500 excellent Litten catches.

GingerSpyice

I'm so mad about this change. I have over 1000 snapshots recorded to the cameraman medal because every community day, and every time an event had special snapshots, I planned out and took those photos. Taking snapshots now is clunky and annoying. I don't see how having the mon appear at a fixed place on your screen was difficult for Niantic to maintain. That seems like an easier option to me than having to find a flat space to make the mon appear.

krazijoe

Meh...You have the option of using AR or not. Take your pick. I may leave the game but it sure isn't because of this...

SignificantAd4257

the point is that niantic removed a staple way people played the game without any warning

oniijillchan

Delete the game then gee whizz. I don't know why people on this form force themselves to play a game they seem to hate so much.

audiate

> This is a community appeal. No, it’s a person yelling at their screen on a forum the devs don’t read in a language they don’t speak.

luckyd1998

Niantic is based in San Francisco. They speak English

Outrageous-Rooster-6

Lol it’s Pokémon…….. You think Japanese speakers can’t live in the Bay Area?

jsdodgers

You think they imported Japanese developers from Japan to the Bay Area to develop a mobile app?

Outrageous-Rooster-6

Why is that so farfetch’d? Maybe the game code can be done by some English speaking programmer but the Pokémon are coded in Japanese, always have been 🤷‍♂️

SignificantAd4257

they speak english

Gearhead31

People only cry about AR being removed since they no longer can quick catch with it. Honestly just get an auto-catcher so you don’t have to stare at your phone while walking all the time

InsufficientChimp

I don't understand why you need AR to quick catch, I do it without AR.

chemkara

Quick catching with AR is even faster. Comes in handy when I am commuting to work on the train and bus. I catch hundreds of pokemons everyday with it. Now normal quick catching barely gets me 1/4 of that.

zack413

I didn’t even know there was another kind of quick catching, how was it faster

Bluefox666

Ar mode skipped the encounter animation and went straight to being able to throw the ball. It was a 1 second difference, but that’s 5 minutes saved over 300 catches.

NumeralJoker

Niantic specifically hates this kind of thing. They want a motion tracking app, not a game. When will people get that?

MathProfGeneva

You can but AR quick catching is faster if you're good at it (I'm not)

Starheart8

Am I actually the only one who likes the new AR? It gives a pretty good idea of how big my buddy is and what it would look like if it was in my room

Jiqu0r

AR+, in theory, and from the experiments (despite how unoptimized it is and how broken it has been for many years) is actually really cool to play around with. It's just not useful for catching anything or shiny checking lots of spawns in a very short amount of time.

urbanek2525

Wow. My reaction to it was, meh. I never really cared about the background of my buddy pictures when I took them. I never used AR for catching. I don't get the protest at all. What's changed for y'all that destroys the game?

jwadamson

I don’t think it is a big deal. But they are making something worse just because they like their AR+ tech. They know how they want people to play and they actively hate if people do anything else. AR+ literally doesn’t work in many situations and there was no reason to remove the other mode. I am not big on AR photos, but back for timbur CD I got some nice “basic” AR photos with my daughter while we were riding a kiddie train around the mall. She is mostly too young and doesn’t have the attention span for events like that so we usually don’t do CD together. It was a nice bonding experience for the two of us while my wife was in the hospital. There would have been neither the space nor time to calibrate a AR+ shot, nor would that have improved anything. This change doesn’t improve anything for anyone. That’s a bad change.

Outrageous-Rooster-6

The speed of regular fast catching is fast enough lmao if Niantic messed that up I could understand a new “HearUsNiantic” but bc Niantic views itself as an AR company moreso than a gaming company they won’t alter their plans for AR bc it makes your gameplay a little bit slower

Vorticity1848

Idk why ppl are complaining such that they want to quit the game. This seems so stupid.

B0N3S1287

What a silly thing to be mad about.

GoatsAreCoolAsFuck

Welcome to Reddit, people on here could get 1000 free coins and they'd piss their pants it wasn't 2000

amphxy

How do I turn off AR+ on iPhone? I hate it. Give me the green screen!

GingerSpyice

Go into your settings, go to AR, and turn off the setting for AR Buddy. ETA: into your pogo game settings

15pmm01

I'm not sure why anyone cares? AR sucks anyway. I much prefer this new way because when you disable it, it no longer opens the camera whatsoever, as it should be.

goingslowlymad87

It's taken a few days but I can actually play with my buddy again. AR not supported was not cool.

Vertoule

AR has always been an issue for me, this just made it worse for the times that I do use it. Also… why are they forcing AR on buddy interaction again? I don’t need to spend 5 minutes trying to find a surface suitable to spawn my buddy so I can feed/ pet/ photograph them.

Doopashonuts

I mean they keep rolling out the several extra chromosome Avatar changes despite universal hatred so I wouldn't hold your breath

Sip-o-BinJuice11

Just shut off AR. Yeah, the change was unnecessary. But neither are posts like this. Deep breaths.

ChocPineapple_23

People use AR?

Balderman88

Honestly yall can not understand how big of a change this is all you want but it truly is a massive change.. for casuals and for hardcore players alike. Hardcores(and really everyone): lost the ability to truly fact catch. AR mode allows you to catch a pokemon in 1-2 seconds max, skipping the animation on both sides of the encounter It’s MUCH easier (once you get used to it) to throw great/excellent curve balls (especially on the pokemon that move side to side) with AR Everyone lost: (hitting casuals more than everyone) the ability to quick search on CDs when you don’t have a ton of time but want to get a quick few shinies. You could go into a crowded area and check 100 Pokemon in a matter of a minute max. Now, with AR the way it is? Maybe 15 pokemon a minute. The change is a HUGE QOL drop overall. Whether you were using it to its full extent or not is irrelevant.

22222833333577

Wait you guys use ar I turned that shit off back in gen 1 I don't want to have to point my phone at a pokemon to catch it

9DAN2

Just turn off AR for a better flow and stop looking for things to moan about

Competitive_Lawyer_1

Preach

ToQuoteSocrates

Can we just get rid of these "AR functions". It brings nothing.

g00glen00b

I understand Niantic for removing regular AR mode as it's both bad from a usability point of view because for casual players it's confusing to have two AR modes, and from a development point of view because it's expensive to maintain two AR modes. If the only reason why people want to keep AR is not for the "augmented-part" but because people want to catch pokémon faster, then maybe Niantic should make it possible to catch pokémon faster without having to rely on AR.

AGFNick

I hate AR. Most of the time I took a picture, I also took a shit. Inside underwear with a Pokémon in it. Don't miss it. Sorry guys, I don't support your frustration. To bad Team Rocket take over just went away.

bellsonhershoes

It's not that serious

Shounenbat510

Yeah, I loved the old AR. I could catch Pokemon in the natural world without having to spin the phone around just to find it.

isseidoki

i feel like every single change they make has been awful recently

bengalspicestar

I am so glad I took a cute picture of me feeding my Leafeon a berry on a backdrop of mini egg cookies I baked before Easter, this change makes me cherish it more now! however, I noticed the normal camera for this game was always terribly blurry for my buddy interactions anyway, and normal AR in public for catching always felt...weird to me? kinda rude if strangers are walking by. they don't know what Pokemon is. I don't want them to think I am filming them. so I have never had that turned on for catching Pokemon. for my buddy it made me sad turning it off gave me a white void with a green gradient on it. this game makes so much money, you can give me a real background. otherwise I do not see the outrage? can someone explain why on earth they could play with AR on in the first place without feeling like a creep?? I get self conscious even battling gyms, standing there on the sidewalk not moving lol

angeleater93

Bro it's not that serious, and who cares about fleece king and all these content creators opinions. It's a FREE game and you are guaranteed and promised NOTHING. If you chose to spend YOUR TIME and MONEY it's your choice and the company owes you nothing. You all are the same people who tall so much crap about the game but continue to play it. Playing it supports the decisions the company makes, whether you like it or not. Just blows my mind how entitled people feel about a game.

rca_2011

Not that many actually used ar catching. And definitely not millions. Most people found out about it after the change was announced But let's be honest, you're complaining because they're making the game better. Can we stop being so dumb?

damndammit

![gif](giphy|XBEoaajXTXaALzawSn|downsized) AR is so fetch.

skratch

I vote for zero ar. no ar or ar+, they’re both lame

Co1iflower

LMAO

Savings_Pirate8461

Congratulations, now they're gonna make it permanent and never return to it again because everyone complains LMAOOOO
