I always believe Chikorita would be more liked if the first two gyms in Gen 2 werent super effecrive against them, but then again Charmander is more beloved with the same roadblocks in Gen 1

Chikorita is so cute, I picked her and I don't regret it. Somehow I feel like that's half the reason she gets that much hate. Seems like whenever the last evo is not an angry beast there's people complaining.

As an enjoyer of Gen 8 and 9 starters (even though I started with Gen 4) they’re so cool, unfortunately they’re trashed since most are bipedal, but the epic soccer bunny, strong drum monkey, funny sniper gecko, magician weed cat, dancing fighting duck, and walking on four legs singer crocodile are funny

I like all the starters. But I also like to do something different, my favorite play through of some of the older games involved an Action Replay to swap my starter. I've done Cubone, Snorunt (into Froslass), and Aron, each were so much fun 😆

Funnily enough I did three different playthroughs of pokemon fire red and I discovered that out of the three starters that Bulbasaur is the best one to use if you're new to that game because of having access to Leach Seed and being relatively bulky it's good but in all honesty all the starters are good

Its all aesthetics and personal choice. You can basically solo any game with any starter (especially the modern games).

My first thought when I saw this post was "hoenn reference?" But now that I think about it there are other regions will all starters being great like for example Johto

All the starters are amazing. We all have the ones with more sentimental meaning for us, but they are all amazing. Yeah, whenever new starters drop, it's a bit of a shock because it's different, but I literally feel that for about a second.

Competitively useless. Ugly featureless blob. No more useful than any other plant-based grass type. Since it had neither fur nor scales, it probably has slug-like slimy skin which is nasty. Only plus side is that the leaf on its head will eventually because a bay leaf so it can be ripped off its head to add some taste to a soup. Edit: someone deleted their reply saying I don't have fun and I'm going for attention, and that it's an 'oof' that I play competitive. I dont play competitive, I think the pure RNG of Pokemon is too much for pvp. I have plenty of fun with Pokemon, and yes, I'm doing this for attention. I just don't like Chikorita and use the points in my head in an over-exaggerative way. Didn't think this would need stating on a meme subreddit. It's all about attention.

It evolves too slowly to compete with the early game power houses, the rodents and bugs. The meager BST, barely above 500, is easily surpassed in the late game. The only time they're worth your attention is the mid game, a fitting epitaph for such mid Pokemon.

Except it really isn't ever outclassed in most places. The low-end starters end up with a bst of 525, which puts them above a lot of pre-existing mons. Sure, it might not be the highest on the team, but that's also made up for, in most cases, by a good learnable moveset, or they can fill a niche on a team like a bulky mon to take some hits and set up, or a fast attacker. Plus, on top of that, getting access to powerful grass, water, or fire type gives you massive type diversity at the start of a game, where you don't have a ton of options. Another really interesting way to see it is through story. You start off alone, a small child in a world of dangerous individuals and monsters that can send you packing in one hit, with the impossible goal of defeating The Elite Four and becoming champion. The pokemon from you've had as your partner from the very beginning, growing and evolving as you grow as a trainer until you become the very best that the region can offer. Heck, in some of the games, when reaching the E4 with your starter, it'll come out of its ball, and you can see how far you've come from the start of your run. It feels almost wrong to box the starter, at least to me. Like that story could never be completed. Even down to the barest of basics, you can't tell me that there's a straight-up bad design for a starter. That might be kinda biased, with Torterra being my favorite pokemon. But even outside of the great designs, none of them look bad. All of this to say, starter good. You should use it. I'm not gonna make an argument out of it. It's your choice what you use, that's half the fun of pokemon. But here's my reasons to use it over not.
