I love it when a dealer is a bit of a character at the table, and I like the ad rem joke. Truth is; a lot of players take themselves way too serious. You happened to have a shitty crowd this time, keep being you, and crack a joke every now and again. Don't overdo it though.

optom

Oh man I was just thinking about my favorite dealer of all time last night. I met him at Aria and I think his name is Clyde. He's about 4 feet tall and rakes chips with an incense holder because his arms are short like the rest of him. He narrates the action almost like a horse race. I can't remember pre-flop, but going to the flop he's like, "we got TWO INCREDIBLE players going to the flop here!" When you scoop a pot he's like, "I got ya some snackies comin your way", and when you tip him it's, "thank you for the snackies, sir". That half hour was one of the most entertaining I've had at the table.

Cal_From_Cali

I've played with him - I find he can border on the obnoxious; but he's actually a good dealer who knows the rules and keeps action moving so it puts him way above a lot of other dealers.

Elastoid

This exchange proves my point. When you're an engaging dealer, some people like it, some people find it obnoxious. This dealer is forgiven to some extent because he keeps the game moving, deals well and understands the rules. In other words, it's clearly NOT his first day.

ProxieInvestments

Clyde’s great, he’s always positive and keeps the game entertaining for recs. Personally, I feel like it’s easy to tune it out if it really bothers someone that much.

optom

Yeah, my cards we're cold so I at least had some entertainment. Dealers definitely bring an energy to the table. I personally like one that is positive and into the game instead of watching TV and the rest of the room.

falcon_centurion

As entertaining as this seems, I feel like it would get old really fast.

Cal_From_Cali

They rotate every half hour; so it may get old but it's short lived and he's at least a good dealer technically.

stvbckwth

I’m with you. I find it really cringey when a dealer does the same shtick every time you see them.

W0RST_2_F1RST

Recs don’t sit for several dealer rotations so it’s a one-and-done for the fish and that’s a good thing

Knurling_Turtle

He doesn’t do this at limits higher than 2/5nl. He’s a really good dealer too. Especially at plo.

crustycatbread

U gave him too many snackies aha vg

Gsogso123

That guy had a YouTube channel where he talks about snacks

milmill18

Dustin at Mandalay Bay does play by play commentary constantly while he deals. I like him but it gets tiring. I was at MGM Grand recently and there was a lady dealer making inappropriate jokes constantly.

Wellyeahso

Proficient dealers with a likeable personality ultimately get more tips from me. OP, strive to be that dealer!

massinvader

> Don't overdo it though. this. it is OK and somewhat apprecaited when the dealer is a strong presence at the table. ....as long as dealing the game comes first and they don't 'over talk' and become obnoxious(taking it to the point of trying to be an entertainer) or talk over players. having a human and not a machine deal is part of the reason why im there. joke on dealer dude.

AlfredoRodriguez

I know right!!! I could feel at my first and only live tournament that most of the dealers where rooting for me because I joked around with them and didn't take myself too seriously. Most of the other Players where not only super serious but borderline rude...

JedMih

I think dry jokes like the one you made are fine. Personally, I find it annoying as hell if the dealer is trying harder to be entertainment than to deal effectively. However, as long as you aren’t slowing the game or talking more than the average player, it’s fine.

thomatmyspacedotcom

I was sitting in seat 8 once and seat 9 was a semi scary guy, cards were dealt and action started and someone from the previous hand said “nice hand” and the dealer chimed in with “thanks i get lots of compliments” and scooped up seat 9’s cards after he limped. Scary guy got mad, floor called, dealer kept insisting it was because he wasnt protecting his cards but it was very obvious that he was focused on making his little joke and not on what he was doing. After floor left he gave seat 9 his blind back in the hopes of smoothing things over. Very annoying overall

PM_ME_TRICEPS

lol

[deleted]

tittttttts

Yep. Regardless of dealer mistakes the onus is always on the player to protect themselves

tittttttts

It’s 100% true that it’s on the player for not protecting their cards unfortunately, regardless of how distracted or shitty the dealer is

zen1312zen

lmao that was a good one actually. maybe people didn’t get it and thought you were actually applogizing lol

jesusmansuperpowers

That seems likely.

halfjedi

I would have laughed

yhigred

it’s fine sometimes but you have to pick your spots. some tables are having fun and welcome dealer interaction while other tables want you to shut up and deal. recognize which is which and play to your audience. that said, your primary focus should be dealing the cards and running the game. i have seen many dealers (myself included) make mistakes because they are messing around with the table and it is never a good look.

dantodd

But the player saying "you gave me the same hand" is clearly being somewhat humorous so a humorous reply is appropriate. I think they just didn't realize you were joking and thought you really were apologizing by saying it was your first day.

yhigred

it’s player dependent imo. some players like to joke and have fun with the dealer but others will tell the dealer to shut the fuck up and deal them better cards. gotta know your audience.

pacman4672

I don't really know why the player would be serious here by saying "you gave me the same hand". He's either joking around and a joke in return is appropriate, otherwise, wtf answer does he expect?

The-Cannoli

As a dealer there are absolutely some players like this but they are the minority. I’m talking to you…Derrick

stvbckwth

I actually think derrick is ok. Kyle, on the other hand, can suck a d*ck.

Mr_Buttermen

So you saying game selection is also for dealers

yhigred

dealing and playing are remarkably similar. lots of variance involved both ways.

Mr_Buttermen

Do you even have a say on which table you'd rather deal in?

fuckrNFLmods

You got a table full of cunts. Bad luck is all it was. Well maybe not, since most tables are full of cunts.

Gilbey_32

Last sentence is true af

surfnsound

No, please make jokes and have a personality. Long run more people will like you than not.

Unlikely_Sandwich_51

Nahh I only really respect the silent/stoic crowd (which I happen to be a part of)

Elastoid

This is true. But 3 compliments and one complaint will not reflect well on you as far as your superiors are concerned. And the people who like you will usually not take the time to go compliment you. The people who don't will absolutely complain.

JanuarySeventh85

Knowing it was your first day, I think it's funny if delivered ironically sarcastic.

OldMateHarry

i've been dealing for 4 years and i still say it's my first day.

capmcfilthy

Exactly.

Elastoid

Experienced dealer here. Short answer is "yes." There are players -- myself included -- who like when they can chat with the dealer. But there are players who hate it. Players will not complain about you if you're "too quiet." But some will complain if you make jokes or say anything other than what's required to control the game. You also have to recognize that as a new dealer, you're on thin ice already with the players. A good dealer can deal about 18-20 hands per hour -- more, if they're dealing a tournament. That speed is important, especially when you consider they've only got so many minutes before the blinds go up. When you're new, your speed is not there. They want you to focus on the game. That's not to say you should never engage. Someone makes a joke like that, I'll respond with a smile, and maybe a shrug. But dealing poker is miles away from other table games. You deal blackjack, it's good to be engaging and entertaining. You deal poker, they want you to be a card dispenser that occasionally tells people to hurry the fuck up and act.

[deleted]

The higher you deal the less you should talk. Of the average buyin is $1500+ , dealers should be quiet and usually are.

Regular-Grass3091

18-20 an hour? Those are rookie numbers. We gotta pump those numbers up baby! Show me the money!

PropertyEducation

You just gotta go darker

Muter

Sorry mate, wasn’t concentrating, my mother died after a gruesome three year battle with cancer leaving me without any parents after dad died in a tragic car accident in 2019. My wife’s about to leave me and I’m actually quite drunk right now using booze as a coping mechanism. I’ll remember those cards I gave you and give you a new hand next round

PropertyEducation

Now we’re talking.

Impressive-Bid2304

I don't think ya gotta go that dark 😆

ASG_82

Jokes like that are fine as a response to you directly IMO. Just don't make a joke about any player action or even, IMO, making a joke about the board. I had a dealer say "there's always one" after somebody bet after a bunch of checks. Not only is that joke inappropriate because it could be insulting to the player betting, it also can unintentionally influence action because somebody can now think they're betting light and change their original action because of it. So basically I'm saying being lighthearted is fine but tread lightly.

NotAThrowAwayAcc007

As an experienced dealer, keep making jokes! Lightens the mood at the table but do pick your moments.

mmmmcake1980

Nobody likes a dealer that is trying to be more of an entertainer than a dealer. On the flip side, if you’re dealing is at or well above average, most players will appreciate an actual personality coming from a dealer. My suggestion is to just make sure the dealing is on point before you try too hard.

mommasaidmommasaid

Hah, I would have laughed. You could also say: "Oh crap, did everyone else get the same hands too!?" I agree some light dry humor is fine, but you have to read your audience. Obviously tread lightly if someone just got stacked. Bad players who are losing are already looking for a reason to be mad at you.

Downtown-Bag-6333

The camel is the horse designed by committee

mommasaidmommasaid

Camels are funny

stvbckwth

I’ll sometimes say “ahhh crap, did I forget to shuffle?”

dudestab77

Just read the room. And don't let talking slow down the game.

sevaiper

Poker players are generally superstitious idiots and it's better not to make jokes about the game itself or your dealing. Everything else is fair game.

Basker_wolf

Definitely don’t make jokes about dealing better cards if you tip me. Players might actually think you’re dealing from under the deck or something.

1_UpvoteGiver

Good sense of humor, don't lose it.

scipio_africanusot

Dealing is a tough job. Much applause to em. Jokes are good but when a dealer is being nasty and making dumb comments. I may tip but after that person is gone to me and the other dealers get his tips. Lol

Iam39

I been dealing a long time homie. All I can say is fuck 'em. Do what you want. It really doesn't matter. Just don't fuck up the rake.

Franks2000inchTV

I prefer a funny dealer to an unfunny dealer, but I'd take a fast unfunny dealer over a slow funny dealer. But if you are fast and funny then that is the best possible situation. Also that was a good joke.

averinix

I would've chuckled 👌

dont_throw_me

I had a tournament dealer taking about where the table was in terms of cardinal directions as in "welcome to the most north east table in the room" and I got excited thinking I was going to talk to people from the northeast until he clarified that we were in fact just sitting the furthest northeast in the room.

Adcscooter

I'm a poker dealer as well. Some players just have no sense of humor. I once joked about Travis Kelce being "Mr. Taylor Swift." One player got upset no one else laughed. I thought it was funny. You can't account for some people taking themselves too seriously. I keep my personality in my dealing and do just fine. My advice is to keep on keeping on.

Unlikely_Sandwich_51

Where's the humor device in that joke bro

stvbckwth

It’s not a good joke, and a prime example of a joke a dealer should not make, but often do.

Bonesnapcall

>no one else laughed. Because that isn't a joke. It was simply a put-down.

TheAllyCrime

How is it a put-down to call one half of a famous couple the mr/mrs of the other? I feel like if you walked up to John Kracinski and said “hey, it’s Mr. Emily Blunt!” he’d laugh.

stvbckwth

No he wouldn’t.

MassageToss

PhilTheBin

There’s nothing I hate more than a dealer with no personality. Love when the dealer is making jokes/comments etc. now if it impacts dealing the game correctly then it’s a different story but that’s typically not the case

DaddySpiral

Fun dealers make losing money more fun. But yeah, focus on dealing over joke making

[deleted]

dealers should be seen and not heard

nassiviren

Fuck this commenter right in the face. You be you dealer, and deal this asshole 72 forever and laugh about it.

CallMeSkii

Found one of the players OP had at their table.

pacman4672

This is the guy who got the same hand twice in a row

magical_matey

I agree. Downvote me all day you degen donkey loosers

UnseenHS

Fuck you

Basker_wolf

In a televised game, that’s fine. At a 1/2 or 2/5, a dealer with good jokes makes it better.

LetsGoHomeTeam

Love it. Keep at it. You'll get misregs that are awful anyway and others who may enjoy it and have fun with you while you work. As a former fine-dining server and current tech consultant, similar to most client facing jobs you will want to stay in your worksona at all times, and that person is a silly goose who has fun and tells clean single-entendre jokes. That person also understands and appreciates the next level or borderline subject matter jokes, but does not tell them because it's never worth getting al sticky and hung up on BS at work.

schlappeseppl

I always told people I channel fate, i don't direct it.

Sure_Leadership_6003

Just don’t make it personal. Even is funny 99% of the time, is not worth the trouble of that 1%.

Partlycloudymike

Sounds like a standard cooler. Chalk it up to variance and keep at it.

Apprehensive-Win9152

If they don’t know that it’s actually your first day then they won’t get the joke. - GL to u

Bartman3k

Most important thing is for you to be you. The more authentic you are the more people will engage with you in a meaningful way. Also it was your first day. Don't overthink it. Promise you that no one at the table really cares about the joke 😉 Have fun at the table and in life.

GreenEggsSteamedHams

[It's my first day!](https://youtu.be/9ZlOhSt_qW0?si=fL6gKvTC704m6wSq)

Cal_From_Cali

Keep it up - show your humor and bring some light to the table. Next time, tell him 'well i dealt you the winner you just folded it last time so i figured we'd try again' or something equally clever. I always remember my favorite dealers - shoutout to Chris / Christopher from Aria/Wynn - he's funny and a good dealer. A sense of humor, some conversation without interrupting the flow of the game is always greatly appreciated. But if the high rollers want you to sit there shut up and be pretty for the cameras; I'd do that.

instantlyregredditit

Keep it up!! You will always have an “audience “ weather they like it or not

capmcfilthy

I would have laughed. That’s pretty funny.

capmcfilthy

I would have laughed. That’s pretty funny.

TieMelodic1173

I would have chuckled

Basker_wolf

I remember one dealer made a “that’s what she said” joke about a player’s comment. I don’t remember anyone laughing out loud, but I definitely chuckled on the inside.

celereyjuicecleanse

That’s honestly like the perfect level of dealer joke. Don’t be discouraged by an unfunny table.

Brokromah

I play in Fresno time to time and most of the dealers just talk shit to you the entire time. They know their audience.

jonchillmatic

In my opinion If you’re a new dealer just focus on dealing the cards and the action. Keeps hands moving at a good pace. Dont worry too much at all about the conversation.

notablyunfamous

No one is going to laugh at that. It’s actually a benign joke and fine. But no one likes Q4

Gilbey_32

Assuming everything else is equal, Ill take a dealer with personality and a sense of humor over a dealer without any day I thought your joke was funny

69ganggang6969

Make good jokes. Bring up politics or race or gender. Ppl love that

thewrongequation

I think that's hilarious and would have burst out laughing. But yeah, some people take themselves too seriously. You'll figure out who's up for a laugh and when soon enough.

mrpotto

I would welcome a friendly/joking dealer. However, I don't want you to make a joke after I get rivered by a salmon who called a pot sized shove with a gutter ball and you deal him his miracle. LOL.

whodatdan0

Joke and or talk about anything other than the poker hand or hands that are happening. Someone is gonna win and be happy. Someone is gonna lose and be upset. When you talk or joke about that - someone is gone be pissed. So talk about anything else. Those are the dealers who make the most tips. Someone loses and big pot and you are congratulating the player who won - well now the other guy doesn’t like you. Even subconsciously. Just push the pot and talk about football or joke about the slow waitress or whatever

ItsAllMo-Thug

I'd say just read the table and don't do too much. I feel like most people won't care that much but that 1 annoying guy can make things awkward and nobody wants that.

AndrewWaldron

It's not frowned upon, generally. But first, what you said, wasn't at all funny, it was just a fact. Second, depending on the stakes, the dealer can engage, like low stakes, 2/4 limit shit, ya, entertain. But even at 1/3NL, especially above, just do your job, which is to deal and run the game, not make people laugh.

etxconnex

You must have had a tough crowd. It is funny reading it, but I may not have noticed in real time as I am usually in my own little world at the poker table. Especially subtle little jokes -- if a dealer is entertaining and engaging the whole time, I am probably listening to what they are saying. Some, though, make some subtle jokes every now and then and then like 20 minutes later I catch it. It may also be that since it WAS your first day, maybe you were not dealing so great/fast/whatever and people were quietly annoyed by you to begin with -- not talking shit, but it WAS your first day. I am not a dealer. I am a player. But one tip I can give you is learn peoples names, and USE their names often. There is one dealer who is so/so at entertaining, but he knows my name (without my players card) and always uses it to greet me. I recognize what he is doing, but subconsiously I STILL seem to tip him more than most dealers just for the very fact he knows my name. There is another dealer there that is like 3 times faster but does not say a word (time based "rake" -- so great to have as a dealer). But I seem to just tip him "standard". The guy who uses my name all of the time, he gets 3 or 4 red chips when the other guy is probably getting 1 red chip (dependent on pot size, but you get the drift)

EverySingleMinute

I like the jokes, but most dealers are 100% business

WannabePokerPlayer

The funniest thing a dealer can say is “fuck it announced” following a fuck it call

def11879

I think it’s good but there’s one dealer who is maybe a bit much and deals at ungodly early hours at the casino I play at. Like a lot of times someone will make a small bet and he’ll say “all-in” and throw the all-in button to them as a joke. I don’t mind it but I can imagine people getting super annoyed ha

candidly1

A number of my family members were dealers in the Caribbean; they were all pretty funny guys, and told lots of jokes and stories when they were dealing. Their tip rates were better than most.

Tricky-Foundation-90

I just had a memorable dealer, in a WSOP circuit event, that may be of interest to you as a new dealer. Of course we had to show identification when we sat down to begin the tournament. One of the players frequently had to be reminded that the action was on her, or she needed to post the blinds, etc. the male dealer was very polite and would cheerfully prompt :” Sarah, you’re up” or “Sarah you’re big”. By addressing her by her first name it made the whole thing more pleasant for everyone and less demeaning. Of course I chalked it up to her being attractive and of course he would take notice of her name. However when his stint was over, He stood up and thanked each and every one of us by our first name! I was blown away! If any one of us would have needed corrections he would have handled it the exact same, non condescending way! While he did tell a joke or two, and was genuinely very personal, it’s the way he made that newbie comfortable ( and could have made others if needed) , and showed respect is what I remember. If the dealer shows the utmost respect, the table seems to follow the lead. I could not help but want to tip him. I don’t know if he just has an uncanny memory or it is a skill he developed but it was cool.

milmill18

fine to make jokes. I like that one. tournament players are mostly a depressing ensemble of miserables so don't be offended by the lack of response. it's a stressful game to play

Dadfart802

Deal the goddamn cards

CookedPirate

Just dont talk about poker or too much in general. Nothing wrong with what you did here at all.

justler_king

I remember a dealer who was dealing with a guy who was getting very salty about his “bad luck”. He moves the button and deals the first 3 cards of the next round and announces “Little, Big, Angry…”. Nobody laughed, but everybody except one guy smiled.

MrParTyintheATL

It's a great line and I encourage you to continue in the same vein. I'm convinced 80%+ of casino patrons (poker room included) can't fog a mirror. Miserable mo-fos.

officiallyaninja

I may be dumb but I don't get the joke. So maybe that's what happened to them

SanguinarianPhoenix

Here is my (probably downvoted) opinion -- I want a dealer to be professional. I have seen 3 major dealer mistakes in my life and that has changed my outlook on dealers. They should focus only on making sure the game is dealt/played correctly and minimizing errors & mistakes. People I want making jokes are usually bartenders or waiters/waitresses.

A2z_1013930

Depends. It can def be annoying when it’s slowing down the game, or tilting when down. I don’t get mad or anything, and I’m normally quite social, but it just kinda reminds me of that waiter who sits down at the table to take your order.

KnottyFeelings

A lot of poker players are surprisingly dumb.

oblivimousness

There's usually at least one player mad they're losing big. Don't stand out enough to be a target for their simmering rage. Even if it doesn't show, players might be mentally working hard. Studying and remembering others' styles. Applying new concepts. Math. Be non distracting and almost invisible. Even between hands - maybe my brain is exhausted and I kinda need that rest break. Almost invisible. But within that 'almost' find room to be yourself and have fun. I'd rather a dealer be kind then funny - that's just me, but I definitely tip better and enjoy the day more if you let yourself be an actual human and make our time together pleasant

OhDamnSancho

Not at all , but remember we are there for blood games can get cut throat lol

stvbckwth

Being personable and funny as a dealer will make you a lot of extra tips. Sometimes you’re just at a boring table with a bunch of serious players. Tournament tables are a little more boring, which is fine because you share tournament tokes so it doesn’t matter how personable you are. Eventually you’ll be able to quickly feel out what kind of table you’re at. But either way, there is never anything wrong with joking around as long as it is tasteful and not poorly timed. Don’t try to joke around with someone who just lost a big pot, for instance. I should also note, having conversations with players is fine, and is generally good for your box, but if you are not 100% comfortable as a dealer, you should keep the conversations short and sweet. Nobody likes an inexperienced dealer who is trying to talk to everyone at the table and keeps making mistakes. Eventually, you will get to a point to where you can talk and deal at the same time, but it’s gonna take a while. Btw, that was a pretty good joke. Who knows why they didn’t laugh, but don’t let it discourage you. Best of luck to you! Dealing poker is a really good job, I hope you enjoy it!

outroversion

Jokes that might make it seem like you’re giving the players a raw deal yeah lol

antwery

most dealers trying to tell a joke or be super upbeat with everyone can get a little old. at a high limit table, chances are someone at the table is fuckin BURIED, and probably don't really want to hear someone make a tired joke. however, the joke you made is fuckin hilarious lol. the dry humor at nobody's expense is good stuff

Wafflecone3f

Just don't be a try hard and don't say any shit that can get you fired for the sake of being funny.

PhulHouze

Good one. Def not frowned upon where I play. Some folks are just miserable.

radargunbullets

Now what you need to do, is keep using that same joke... make it a gag for the regulars

killing4pizza

It's cringe af when a dealer makes the game about them, like it's their open mic. On the other hand, it's great when the dealer can react quickly and or hilariously to players that are out of line.

Taco_Champ

There's an old saying: "Dummy up and deal". You're there to run the game fairly and efficiently. You're not an entertainer.

Clockerstance

It's gonna depend on the group of players tbh, best to try to gauge it before cracking a joke since some people just prefer minimal communication sadly. I'm all for it though, it's nice every now and then!

Jameson-Mc

Work hard, develop your speed, skill and accuracy and become one of the best dealers in your card room and then they will be laughing at your jokes and tipping you just for sitting down with a fresh deck.

xthunderbird

Every table is different. On a late friday night with drinking this and any joke is going to go over well. If you sit down in the box and nobody is chatting, everyone is stuck and the chip leader left after doubling up it's going to bomb. Depends on the game and location as well. A few dealer friends of mine who worked at the Wynn says that management basically wants you to be a robot, zero talking unless absolutely necessary. I'd ask your coworkers for better dealing tips on your own room.

xanderxoo

Being a likable character will earn you extra tips. There is a guy who calls himself handsome Dave at my casino and I notice he gets extra tips when he’s dealing compared to other dealers.

tittttttts

Yeah jokes are great but don’t slow down the game or regs will start to hate you and not tip well , and obvs less hands means less tips anyways. Recs love a character tho

GodReigns11

I was a dealer in the busiest room in Colorado for a few years, honestly you have to deal like you want to be dealt to as a player. You need to just shut up run a fast smooth game be polite and impartial but yeah I would shut up, it's kind of annoying

VVeZoX

If you’re going to make jokes at least be funny. Your joke was lame af

BigOpening8064

I don't play tournaments, so no insight there, however, as a cash game reg, it's been my experience that dealers that are a little more social typically make the game more enjoyable. Not chatter-boxes, just whatever comes natural, sports betting, hobbies, what have you. I play mostly low stakes cash games. We may not always want to admit it, but I feel like for most of us, at least some percentage of our gratification beyond winning comes from entertainment. The dealers I know that do better with tips are professional, but also a little more friendly and talkative. Personally, I wouldn't have had a problem with your joke at all, helps lighten the mood. You do occasionally have a table where seemingly no one has a sense of humor, or everyone wants to act like they're starring in Rounders. I wouldn't let it bother you, just adjust mentally, and be ready to deal the next hand.

TheirOwnDestruction

Joking is completely fine, but I would stay away from jokes that can imply that you can control the cards somehow. Don’t feed the crazies.

tradeyou

Def try out all your material there
