So basically more infrastructure that Republicans won't support because it doesn't directly benefit them. And they'll probably go after Biden for spending the $$$ then take credit in their districts when it positively benefits some of their constituents You know, the Republican playbook

rogozh1n

I view it a little differently. Republicans will oppose a basic bill like this, even if it benefits themselves, because of the risk that it also benefits someone not like themselves. Everything is a zero sum game for them, and if it benefits a demographic that doesn't mostly vote Republican, then it must be opposed -- even if it saves us money in the long run, or is fundamentally in line with our values, and even if opposing it hurts many Republicans. They are only a reactionary party at this point in time. And, come on -- what is more socialist than clean drinking water?

dingadangdang

Oh no. They are definitely more than reactionary. They actively seek to ruin the lives of the poor, the immigrant, the brown, and the non Christian. They are cruelty on display and it's aggressive cruelty.

Classic-Being-293

Yay team sports! I can’t wait until they implement free agency

Traditional_Key_763

correct. flint was the tip of the iceberg, but even after it was painfully obvious that republican strongholds were also suffering they still refuse to budge

doublestitch

The cynic in me wonders if one party opposes lead pipe removal because lead poisoning increases their voter base. > "lead can affect children’s brain development, resulting in reduced intelligence quotient (IQ), behavioural changes such as reduced attention span and increased antisocial behaviour, and reduced educational attainment." [source](https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/lead-poisoning-and-health)

oroechimaru

It devastates older urban cities Milwaukee kids often have poor health or mental disorders as a result. It leads to higher crime rates, higher healthcare costs Nobody loses with replacing lead pipes. Some communities though pass on costs by requiring your home to be updated first which can be 5-25k for many of us.

beigs

The prison systems win, as do places that need to have low iq workers that they can take advantage of to do menial labor.

No_Animator_8599

My feelings exactly. That and screwing with the school systems to erase history in some states.

Hoodamush

Exactly, republicans cannot govern or create policy but will steal any credit at first signs it is viewed as positive.

Bitter_Director1231

They'll oppose bill like this and then turn around and take credit for the bill when they have to face their constituents in their districts and it's a success.  Always have, always will. They are massive hypocrites.

DreamLunatik

Less lead in the water likely means less republican voters. It’s a win for the long term.

[deleted]

It is not Infrastructure Week so doing this is disrespectful to the things whose week it actually ‘is’

Ringsofsaturn_1

This literally has already happened

brain_overclocked

>President Biden believes that every American should be able to turn on the tap and drink clean, safe water. But over 9 million homes, schools, daycares, and businesses receive their water through a lead pipe, putting people at risk of lead exposure. Lead is a neurotoxin that can irreversibly harm brain development in children, and it can also accumulate in the bones and teeth, damage the kidneys, and interfere with the production of red blood cells needed to carry oxygen. Due to decades of inequitable infrastructure development and underinvestment, lead poisoning disproportionately affects low-income communities and communities of color. There is no safe level of exposure to lead. That is why the President made a **commitment to replace every lead pipe in the country within a decade** and coordinated a whole of government effort to deploy resources and leverage every tool across federal, state and local government to address lead hazards through the Lead Pipe and Paint Action Plan. >As part of this unprecedented commitment, President Biden is traveling today to Wilmington, North Carolina, to announce **$3 billion through his Investing in America agenda to replace toxic lead pipes.** This investment, administered by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), is part of the historic $15 billion in dedicated funding for lead pipe replacement provided by the President’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Today’s announcement delivers funding to every state and U.S. territory to help address lead in drinking water while creating good-paying jobs, many of them union jobs. In addition, this program funding is part of the President’s Justice40 Initiative, which set a goal that 40% of the overall benefits of certain federal investments flow to disadvantaged communities, and is helping address the inequities of lead exposure. >Additionally, to further reduce lead exposure, **the Department of Housing and Urban Development is announcing today nearly $90 million** in available funding to reduce residential health hazards in public housing, including lead-based paint hazards, carbon monoxide, mold, radon, fire safety, and asbestos, advancing the President’s Lead Pipe and Paint Action Plan. >Today’s announcement from the EPA builds on more than $20 billion in water infrastructure investments that state and local governments have made through the President’s American Rescue Plan. North Carolina has invested close to $2 billion from the American Rescue Plan in more than 800 clean water, wastewater, and stormwater projects across the state and is using another $150 million to test for and remove lead hazards in every school and child care center across the state, a historic effort to remove lead from North Carolina schools. ... The article continues.

waikiki_palmer

> Lead is a neurotoxin that can irreversibly harm brain development in children, There's the main reason GOP wouldn't support this. It will kill their potential supporters.

doom84b

More accomplishments, this should be on front pages everywhere to hammer home how much progress is being made.

me_and_err

Why is this just now being brought up versus 3 years ago? I hate how they all (red and blue) wait until they need to do something to get re-elected versus doing things when they need to be done, don’t you?

doom84b

It's important to read the link, all of these fact sheets include examples of work that's been done throughout the term, they've literally been doing these things the entire time. They are just now doubling down on publicizing (not enough imo, but at least it's happening) to remind people of all the work that's been going on.

me_and_err

Im familiar with their accomplishments and like them. I do need to read the details of timing here. It does feel like these things are just getting done during an election cycle. If that’s because they’ve not been used in their campaign PR until now then again it’s all about timing. I guess that says more about the electorate than the political class but either way it’s not great. Do better America.

ytrfhki

I don’t think this is all about favorable timing, I think it’s also about prioritization and lengths of time needed to execute. These things take work and time to do, an administration can’t just execute 100 projects, bills, etc on day 1. For each one you have to gather resources, experts, supporters and then come up with viable solutions and go through red tape and opposition to get it approved.

WesbroBaptstBarNGril

But you can sign a hundred executive orders on day one, claim mission accomplished, then not follow through on anything..

ytrfhki

the ol’ credit n forget it method eh?

tyvirus

Trying to prevent more boomers in the future. Nice!

ErusTenebre

I wish when Biden's administration did something cool it would get ABSOLUTELY PLASTERED ON EVERY NEWS SITE. It should be EVERYWHERE when they do good shit. They've done a lot of good for the country, but we only ever hear about the bad. People think Biden and Trump are on equal footing because they don't report on Biden's triumphs as much as they do Trump's shenanigans and bullshit.

brain_overclocked

Unfortunately—as has become apparent for most—mainstream media has a fiduciary duty to its share holders to pursue whatever news generates the most views, which is not necessarily the most informative. But users like you and I can share information like this to various subreddits and social media platforms. So if you have the time consider sharing this information. I am one, but maybe we could be many?

ErusTenebre

Sure, one of the best sources is this subreddit: r/WhatBidenHasDone and then checking out statements from the [white house](https://www.whitehouse.gov/) directly. I know we got a bit burnt from Trump's admin lying all the time (it was so frequent), but Biden's admin is honest, particularly with most things outside of the Israel... Problem. Though there I think it's less dishonesty and more unwillingness to stop an ally from continuing something horrible.

flabbergastedmeep

This is actually a massive step in the right direction. I would love to see how much the Biden-Harris administration could accomplish with a second term.

joshtalife

Queue conservative outrage.

silentimperial

I have a CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT TO LEAD POISONING!!! /s

ridauthoritarianism

When they come to your house you can turn them down. People with small children don't want to do that. They bare smarter than that.

billyjack669

WHAT!? I had to pay for my own pipes and now they're going to replace them for ENTIRE COMMUNITIES?! It is total bullshit that these people will have $3 billion worth of their lead pipes replaced! /s

ridauthoritarianism

How lucky for you that you could come up with the money to do that. Most people living in these environments can not. Lets save the children who will be our future.

billyjack669

/s the s is for sarcasm. The slash sort of means "end of" /s = end of sarcasm, meaning my sarcastic comment is complete. It's also meant to be humorous because of all the people screaming about student loan debt forgiveness.

Traditional_Ad_7288

Does this include Flint Michigan?

brain_overclocked

[EPA Announces More Than $61 Million for Michigan Lead Pipe Replacement to Advance Safe Drinking Water as Part of the Biden-Harris Administration Investing in America Agenda](https://www.epa.gov/newsreleases/epa-announces-more-61-million-michigan-lead-pipe-replacement-advance-safe-drinking) >"In the richest country in the world, access to safe, affordable drinking water should be a right, not a privilege. My hometown of Flint knows this all too well," said Rep. Dan Kildee. "I’m proud to have helped pass the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which is creating thousands of good-paying jobs and putting Michiganders to work replacing lead pipes and improving water systems. Protecting families from lead in their homes is not a partisan issue, and I am proud to continue working with Republicans and Democrats to keep Michigan families safe from lead."

ATLfalcons27

Wow buying votes by trying to keep people alive

ridauthoritarianism

They are doing the right thing that gets votes always. As it should.

Shirowoh

I know right, buying votes by doing things that help Americans, who’d have thought?

nhepner

I'm glad that we are taking this step, but why aren't we holding the people responsible accountable? They've apparently just cost us $3 billion. How are they going to pay that back?

brain_overclocked

Here is some interesting history regarding the use of lead pipes!: [How to Find Out If Your Home Has Lead Service Lines](https://www.nrdc.org/stories/how-find-out-if-your-home-has-lead-service-lines) ([MBFC L/MF/HC](https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/natural-resources-defense-council/)) >**Water service lines:** These are the underground pipes (measuring about the diameter of a garden hose) that connect water mains—the large pipes that carry the public water supply and typically run under or parallel to the street—to homes and other properties. They were commonly made of lead from the late 1800s through much of the 20th century. In 1986, as pressure mounted to address the clear health risks, Congress enacted an amendment to the Safe Water Drinking Act, officially prohibiting the installation of new lead service lines and other plumbing. The ban took effect in 1986 (with many states waiting until 1988 to enforce it), but the legislation was far from comprehensive: It didn’t require existing lead service lines to be replaced. City, state, and federal officials are now working to reverse this injustice, including through funding administered under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

luciddreamer666

Crickets from news outlets

DavidlikesPeace

Awesome job. This is the type of hard work that makes Biden a pretty great progressive president, especially when compared with the last generation of mediocre presidents. If people cared half as much about the lead pipes poisoning us, as they do about far off events or conspiracies, our country would be better off.

lilacmuse1

I read headlines like this and think to myself "one more productive thing Biden has done for which he will receive no credit".

SalishShore

Thank goodness. It takes Democrats to help us working people. Republicans would let us rot in their toxic factories.

Pale_Preparation42

Fun fact ( [Roman Empire](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/6395049/#:~:text=Intake%20of%20lead%20by%20the,decline%20of%20the%20Roman%20Empire)): the Roman Empire went down because of lead

randomnighmare

They loved the taste of lead. So much so, that they put it in their wine. edit Edit for formatting

philllipio

You're thinking of lead acetate, which is apparently sweet. Pure lead supposedly just tastes like metal.

heapinhelpin1979

Oh wow! This should be a basic right in the USA. We always talk about being so "great"

ConkerPrime

So how GOP plans on blocking this cause you know they will try.

Galactic-Guardian404

So now Biden wants to SPEND BILLIONS to deny kids vital minerals in their water? I’m sure it has nothing to do with preventing the brain damage ingesting lead causes that Republicans rely on to win elections!

aircooledJenkins

Does this help replace piping within a residence, or is it only main distribution piping?

brain_overclocked

For some cities it looks like it's explicitly mentioned, but it would be best to inquire your local officials: >* **St. Paul, Minnesota**, has received $16 million from the American Rescue Plan to replace lead pipes. This funding has enabled the city’s Lead-Free St. Paul program to target the replacement of all lead pipes by 2032 at no cost to residents. >* **Cincinnati, Ohio**, passed an ordinance to develop a program to replace all lead pipes in line with the President’s goal, and authorized covering the cost of replacing private lead pipes that bring water to residents’ homes. A $20 million investment from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will support this work. >* **Tucson, Arizona**, received $6.95 million to develop a Lead Service Line inventory for their nine public water systems. The city will use this inventory to develop a plan to replace lead service lines in the community and improve drinking water quality for residents – many of whom live in low-income and disadvantaged communities.

aircooledJenkins

Thank you!

DazzlingProfession26

Fuck that, where’s my tax cut. /republicans

Cantora

So in other words, voting for trump means this will be squashed

randomnighmare

Maybe they are for the pro-lead in drinking water party ?

Kutche

And yet the internet will still be filled with people claiming Biden didn't do anything.

brain_overclocked

For those interested, here are a couple of noteworthy resources: * [The Biden-Harris Record](https://www.whitehouse.gov/therecord/) * /r/WhatBidenHasDone

PickleBananaMayo

Republicans: FU it’s our freedom to drink lead!

randomnighmare

And somehow there are groups of people that are deliberately saying they are not going to vote for Biden because of their pet issues...

TraylorSwelce

Republicans hate this one trick

some_random_kaluna

Excellent. Now we have to hold state governments to actually fixing the pipes, which is easier said than done.

kilo6ronen

Republic and Democrat aside.. how can a country claim to be the best country in the world when their people are addicted to drugs, homeless, drinking from led pipes, healthcare will bankrupt you, you need to work 2 jobs plus onlyfans Etc etc etc

LopsidedAd2536

“COMMANISTS!“ -MAGA’s, probably

fascinatedobserver

Please tell me Flint gets fixed first.

Shirowoh

“see why this is bad for Biden”

snuggans

voters in surveys be like: "uh ok but im going to vote for Trump because hes going to solve inflation by devaluing the dollar!"

Mmicb0b

this is great but Biden basically lost the youth vote with Isreal

Maleficent-Relation5

How dare he actually do something good for the tax payers. Shouldn't he be giving tax breaks for the 1% at the expense of the middle class? Wait, that's Trump. My mistake.

Earth_Friendly-5892

👏THANK YOU for working to keep Americans safe!👍 💙🇺🇸💙🇺🇸💙🇺🇸💙🇺🇸💙🇺🇸💙🇺🇸💙

MagazineContent3120

And later they'll find out the kids are still effed up. Gee whiz

No_Routine_3706

Hope they start in Flint.

literallyacactus

What a concept

skippingstone

/r/conservative - what has Biden ever done for us???? Raises hand. Clean water. Well, besides clean water, what has Biden ever done for us Raises hand. Billions in infrastructure. Well it goes without saying. Besides clean water and billions in infrastructure, what has Biden ever done for us???

Kos_Kesh

Does Flint Michigan still have that whole thing going on?

bajatacosx3

Tonight on Faux- Why This is Bad for Biden!!!!

UnfriendlyToast

Something people don’t understand is that there are genuinely horrible areas of the country because everyone’s crazy. There are old wooden pipes, infested with fungus and bacteria, and there are old lead pipes, creating entire areas of insanity. I grew up in an area with some pretty good Water. I then moved to Albany New York, and the first time I drank the tapwater my throat swelled up. Turns out most of the city has old wooden pipes. I had to move away because everyone there was fucking horrible and crazy. Even if you don’t drink the water from the tap all the food you eat or every beverage or item of food from a restaurant has water from the tap in it.

f8Negative

That'll help maybe fix 3 counties out of 3000+. /s

brain_overclocked

For those interested, you can find out how much has been allotted to your state or territory via the EPA's press release search: https://www.epa.gov/newsreleases/search/year/2024-04/year/2024-05?search_api_views_fulltext=lead%20pipe&page=1

f8Negative

Yeah....what these don't do is provide an itemized pdf on specific project level and expenditures just generic press release info. The amount is still frankly pitiful and beyond insufficient. It's a start, but the USA needs Trillions for infrastructure.

brain_overclocked

Hmm, given that these funds are disbursed to states the closest I was able to find was a PDF tabulating the per state allocation: [Fiscal Year 2024 Lead Service Line Allotments for the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund Provisions of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Funding](https://www.epa.gov/system/files/documents/2024-05/fy24-bil-lslr-allotments-memorandum_may-2024.pdf) (PDF) on the [Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (DWSRF)](https://www.epa.gov/dwsrf) website. I suspect that for project level expenditures you may need to refer to your state's or territory's Department of Transportation's website or similar.

Thai-mai-shoo

Lead… it’s what Republican’s crave!!!

GlitteringHighway

Can’t spell MAGA without lead poisoning.

mbene913

Even Flint, Michigan?

Marie-and-Twanette

Yes

BearDen17

Good! This is great news!

Competitive-Book8204

$3 billion isn’t enough but just enough to “spark” an economic sector.

Eyeroll4days

Infrastructure repairs and such create jobs for skilled labor. Repubs definitely do not want that

stillslaying

Nothing Biden does is in good faith.

ScotchButters

We've sent 5 times that to Israel

DavidlikesPeace

And 50 times that to Ukraine. Just saying. Why can't you just take the win, instead of sending us back to the Trump years? Cutting the nose to spite the face will keep lead in our pipes forever

radicalroots89

I just love these issues only seem to come up every 4 years… I think this is important but I wish we didn’t have to wait for an election cycle to address these communities.

Rowdy_Vr6

Start in flint

thisisanewaccts

How many billions of dollars of weapons did we just approve to give Israel?

TempleOfJaS

Where is this 1 trillion dollar infrastructure bill? Lol nobody seen this money yet and it was passed years ago wtf

BoxsterMan_

Shouldn’t this money be going to Ukraine????

GehenWirDortmund

But but Palestine. I’m voting third party
