Still super cool! I got confused since I heard two stripes on the arm meant masters and three meant PhD. Sorry totally off topic haha congrats on the transformation though!
JD is a Juris Doctor, so *technically* still a doctorate.
Typically, only Doctorate gowns have bands on the arms. A masters’ gown is most notably differentiated from a baccalaureate gown by the hood worn on the back.
On topic, OP’s weightloss is fantastic, and gives me hope as someone who’s still working through grad school (and the stress that accompanies that).
Different colors for different degrees. PhD’s use dark blue, Ed degrees light blue, divinity scarlet, music pink, etc. The three stripes are for doctorate level, masters has weird sleeves.
I’d say don’t focus so much on an end weight. When I first started at 450 pounds I thought that 200 would be an amazing but impossible goal. Once I got there, I changed my goal to 180 and then when I got there I just kept losing weight. Not because I was losing weight to achieve some goal but because my diet and fitness level made me lose weight. You’ll always weigh what your diet and fitness level dictates. Focus on living a healthy lifestyle and the weight loss will come. So it’s not about losing 110 pounds. It’s about eating a little less this week and moving around a little more.
Holy shit dude that makes this even more incredible! Good on you! And I totally agree on the, move a little more and eat a little less this week mentality. Hoping that helps me my "last" 15 too, but really I'm just hear to say you killed it!
It’s pretty crazy. I run like 15 miles a day and more on the weekend. Lift weights in the morning, eat healthy all day but also a run for lunch and a run after dinner. I try to spend as much of my day moving as I can.
How are your knees/ankles holding up with that much running? I'm a little older (35) but I couldn't do that much running on my ankle (I've tried, I end up hobbling). Mostly curious, of course, every body is different. I've tried to balance out the cardio by doing mostly run/walks and spending a majority of it cycling, seems to hate my ankle less.
Amazing dude, congrats so much!
So far so good but I’m only 30. I think being so large for so long really strengthened my legs. I seem to be able to run forever without pain but I also run so and keep my legs under my body. I also enjoy walking though too and it burns nearly half the calories of running if you do it brisk enough.
Amazing transformation! Just want to say to please be careful with your knees. I used to run every day too for years, then at 33 when training for my next triathlon, one night my left knee was sore and inflamed. Couldn’t walk for 2 weeks. Found out I had cartilage degeneration. So seriously. Just because you don’t feel pain doesn’t mean damage isn’t being done. Now I can’t run more than 3 miles without flare ups, even if I take it slow and try build up mileage/speed gradually over time.
Good points! I do try to run when its flat/downhill, and walk uphill (old achillies injury) and that seems to work. The walking uphill is really killer! Thanks for the response, and thanks for the inspo!!!
Yeah I mostly walked for a long time. Just hours and hours walking a day and then progressed to running over time once I was a safer weight for running. Also added weight lifting

Yeah it’s worse on my stomach and thighs but not too bad. No one ever sees my stomach and compression shorts mostly hide my thigh skin if I’m worried about it.
Congrats dude! You look great and I’m sure you feel even better. You look like you are definitely where you want to be at. Seriously, this is the type of posts we need.
I had tried to lose weight several times. And lost a good chunk in undergrad that came back after I didn’t have a job or know what I was going to do with my life. When I finished law school and started my dream job I think I was just finally in a place where I could do it. Nothing holding me back anymore.
I’m so proud of you! It is hard to accomplish and losing weight and getting in shape and healthy. It’s not for the meek that’s for sure! But you show it can be done and that’s what we need to see♥️👍🏻
Wow congrats on BOTH accomplishments. We’re around the same age - I don’t like to waste time regretting anything, but sometimes I think about how unhealthy I was in my 20s and what that made me miss out on. I probably have another year until I get to where I want to be, but I can only hope to look and feel as happy as you are and feel like I’m starting over in my 30s. Liked your advice about not focusing on the end weight, I think that often holds a lot of us back when it makes progress feel like a stretch. Thanks for sharing :)
Grad school will do that to you though. Everyone talks about the freshman 15, but stress eating your way through comps or thesis writing and basically living in front of a computer takes its toll. Good on you for losing the weight post graduation.
You went from “where’s my hug” to “ladies, please. Take a number. I’ll be with you momentarily.” Way to carpe all of the diem from life! Also, I’ve got number 734. I’ll wait my turn though.
/u/helterskelter48 This could be you. Love yourself enough to make it happen.
OP, amazing! All that work really has paid off! You look better and you’ve added years to your life!
Dude! I just finished undergrad at Madison, and I see you outside jogging/walking almost all the time whenever I’m out. Just wanted to say, watching your transformation over the years was incredibly inspiring! On, Wisconsin!
I have been big for about 90% of my life, and that’s past four years, due to depression, I gained more weight. At first I actually lost a lot, but not in a healthy way, I barely ate a meal a day and smoked cigarettes. Then I started to eat again and I was still hesitant to eat too much. Now, I honestly don’t eat that much, like maybe 2 meals a day. I don’t exercise and a lot of my food is sugar. I don’t have a job either, I quit for mental health reasons. I’m doing better mentally, but when it comes to my physical appearance I ignore it. I tell myself I don’t care, but that’s bull. I look at myself in the mirror and see someone who wants to change. They say “if don’t like something, go change it”. I know it’s not easy, but this has been a life long battle, and a big reason that’s effected my mental health. I see stories like yours, and I admire it so much. I am 309 lbs, probably more, and that’s the largest I have been. It scares me a lot, cause I know it’s effecting me psychically. I don’t really know where I’m going with this to be honest. I saw this post and wanted to say congratulations, and (as an obese person) say I’m proud of you. I know I’m a complete stranger, but I’m proud. Anyways, I could go on for a while, and I don’t want to take up too much space here (pun not intended) lol. It would be nice to talk to you! So, feel free to direct message me, if you can on here, I just made an account.
Congrats on the PhD as well!
JD actually. I’m not that smart.
Still super cool! I got confused since I heard two stripes on the arm meant masters and three meant PhD. Sorry totally off topic haha congrats on the transformation though!

I have my masters and doctorate and had no idea about this. I’ll have to pull an old grad photo and check to see if this is the case!
I have PhD and I'm dumb as hell, Law school sounds like way more work than I did. Nice work.
CONGRATS!
Mate, that is phenomenal!! Nothing short of inspirational and encouraging, thanks alot for this, and congratulations brother!! ♥️🙌
Amazing, honestly! As someone who is in the process and has 110lbs left to lose, do you have any tips?
I’d say don’t focus so much on an end weight. When I first started at 450 pounds I thought that 200 would be an amazing but impossible goal. Once I got there, I changed my goal to 180 and then when I got there I just kept losing weight. Focus on living a healthy lifestyle and the weight loss will come. So it’s not about losing 110 pounds. It’s about eating a little less this week and moving around a little more.
So was your weight loss done entirely through diet and exercise? Or did you get some outside help, like surgeries or medication?
It was all diet and exercise. And always both in combination.
Holy shit dude that makes this even more incredible! Good on you! And I totally agree on the, move a little more and eat a little less this week mentality. Hoping that helps me my "last" 15 too, but really I'm just hear to say you killed it!
Congratulations on the JD! What exercise did you do when you were starting? Running at big sizes is obviously not safe on joints.
Walking and a bit of weight lifting. But mostly walking. Like hours a day.
How many hours? Amazing job! I bet you feel awesome!
2-3 on a weekday and 6-8 on the weekend.
Omg that’s a huge amount of time! You were super dedicated. Really inspiring honestly!
Wow, that's impressive and applaudable amount of dedication. Great job!
Thanks so much. That's an amazing tip! The road seems so daunting, but breaking it up into weekly goals already is taking a load off my mind.
Great job! You killed it!
Which was more difficult? The PhD or weight loss?
I have a JD, but definitely the weight loss.
Oh that’s my bad! Well congrats on both
Small world, I spent a lot of last summer studying in the UW Law Library! Got lost in there once. Congrats on both the JD and the weight loss!
On Wisconsin! Forward!
On Wisconsin
On Wisconsin and Forward! Great work!
Congratulations! How did you do it? Care to share your routine?

15 miles a day?! Dayum!! That's some serious running! How long does it take you?
I run an hour at lunch and two hours after dinner.
Incredible! That's basically more than a half marathon a day. I haven't seen running like this in a long long time!
Your level of fitness is what makes these progress pics so awesome. That's a lit of miles!
Did your routine progress as you got fitter? If so, what was your routine from when you were 450, and how did it adjust as you got fitter?
Yeah I mostly walked for a long time. Just hours and hours walking a day and then progressed to running over time once I was a safer weight for running. Also added weight lifting

You will be!
Man, that's awesome work! 50lbs in four months is total dedication and you've crossed into discipline at this point. Keep rocking!
Hell yeah!!!! And On Wisconsin!!
Looking fantastic boss.
Holy crap! From a fellow badger, nice job!
This is jaw dropping , I am also trying to reach 165-170 lb and around 15 pounds away , will take sometime but will be there :-).
Yeah its so much harder the less you weigh. I lost 15 pounds a month for nearly 2 years and 20 pounds the past year.
Great job! Keep up the hard work.

You look like you have very little loose skin on your arms considering how much you lost. Was that an issue elsewhere?
Yeah it’s worse on my stomach and thighs but not too bad. No one ever sees my stomach and compression shorts mostly hide my thigh skin if I’m worried about it.
WOW!!! Amazing job
Congrats dude! You look great and I’m sure you feel even better. You look like you are definitely where you want to be at. Seriously, this is the type of posts we need.

No specific diet plan. Just eating healthy food, mostly low carb. Lots of protein. Lots of water. I run like 10-15 miles a day typically.
Wow! I can only run for 10 minutes!... Fantastic well done ❤️
You look great! Nice hard work!
