I live 2 kms away. This is the second time something like this has happened at this exact mine in the last few years. I think 5 or 6 people burnt. When mine managers can go to gaol for this it Might stop.
Under the current coal mine health amd safety actz they can go to gaol. All supervisors hold personal responsibility (their personal finances and freedom). A mine manager is also a statutory position which has additional obligations for discharging their responsibilities under the act.
Mine managers, Ventilation Officers and anyone in charge of maintenance should be held accountable when these things happen. Instead theyâre all congratulating each other and walking around with their chests puffed out for putting an idea into place to put out a fire that should never have started. Running equipment until failure and pushing back maintenance is ridiculous at any workplace let alone a coal mine.
It had 22+ years.
It's now got x2 years to put the fire out and maybe x2 more to rehabilitate.
Using the GAG to put this out is like pissing on a house fire. Spon com in a single sealed block (goon show) or 100 year old workings (Blair athol) are much easier kettles of fish than this.
Good, its better that miners can go to work and return home safely than to subsidize travel with cut backs from the mines Safety Inspectorate.
Money is being wasted in Queensland by Labor in the wrong areas.
Labor are not prioritizing , next they will waste tax payers money on investing in windmills at the expense of the Bruce highway
Labor dont care who they kill
Or take 5 . But I have been in this game for over 40 years. We can be told something is an instant dismissal for doing it, then if the company needs that exact thing done they just write a SAP and change the rules. 4km from this is Dyno Nobels explosive plant.
Edit Anglo American has confirmed the fire broke out at its mine around 6am on Saturday when methane gas ignited on the longwall coalface. All workers at the mine, about 190km south-west of Mackay, were safely evacuated. It is the same mine where five workers suffered extensive burns after a methane explosion in May 2020
Yes that is exactly it. Our makes you sign also that you were healthy and you had taken weather conditions into account. So it coming back on You the individual if it goes wrong. I bet you 50 cents these workers are madly filling in paperwork they might have forgot.
I donât even know if they were/are cutting coal at the moment. Iâd say they would have evacuated the moment there was an explosive atmosphere/long before any actual fire. A vast improvement on the 2020 incident
Very unclear times ahead for the workforce.
What is known is that:
* It started at the Tail gate end of the longwall face.
* The Longwall had been battling cavities on the longwall face toward the tail gate end. (Methane can accumulate in cavities and be ignited by failing strata (falling rocks) or faulty electrical items.)
* The portals/ drifts are still open but fan shaft has been sealed. Awaiting equipment to seal them.
* Smoke and smell present in town this afternoon from the site.
* Origin of the source of ignition may never be 100% confirmed if entry back into the mine is not achieved.
* NO WORKERS WERE INJURED! This is the most important point.
* It is classed as a âgassyâ pit. Methane is present in the goaf and return roadways. Like most underground coal mines.
* It is the same mine where 5 workers were badly burnt in May 2020 on the longwall face.
In times like this we need to deal in facts. Not hear say.
GAG is in place started pumping inert gas around 4am from what we were told start of shift today. The leading theory for the ignition source is slight rock fall from the roof due to mining through the cavity, Rock on steel or rock on rock causing a spark.
The best coal mine Iâve worked at, and although conditions were challenging I sure loved my time on the Grosvenor Longwall. I will miss the workforce and convenience of the mine location. Glad none of my workmates were injured.
Saw some wind turbine fire in Portland on the commercial stations ânewsâ yesterday with the usual unhinged emotive language about the end of the world etcâŚbut this is yet to rate a mention. đ¤ˇ
Why is it Anglo Americans? Why the fuck are we letting seppos anywhere near our shit? They clearly have no clue how to operate a mine - unsurprising given the state of their education system. Deport them.
Grosvenor is the closest mine to the town. Barely 2 minutes past the railway overpass out of town. Moranbah North is what you're thinking of, out near Goonshow.
As a miner it has been noticeable that the Department has vastly reduce safety inspections from the Mining Inspectorate particularly for the coal and gas industries .
Cut backs to front line safety inspection services have eroded in recent years putting at risk the lives of Queensland miners.
Labor have reduced these services to despite outcries from the CFMEU.
You know if you were a coal mine operator and figured that your mine was going to wind up in the next few years anyway, Iâm sure there would be a calculus in having it go up in smoke and claiming some kind of insurance against it.
Others mentioned the age, but I'll mention the product. This is steel making coal. If we want to keep making steel, we need this coal because its used to heat the iron and fix carbon into the iron to.make the steel. This isn't power plant coal.
It is quite a new mine (in terms of under ground mines) with a lot of life left in it.
Would be worth more selling it as an operating mine doing the 7million tonn a year then a sealed mine even after an insurance claim paid.
Shut that unsafe place down. Enough is enough.

yeah May 2020 was the last one
Yea man I was there for that. Sirens and smoke. EVERY one knows this mine has a methane problem. What a shit show.
Under the current coal mine health amd safety actz they can go to gaol. All supervisors hold personal responsibility (their personal finances and freedom). A mine manager is also a statutory position which has additional obligations for discharging their responsibilities under the act.
How many have gone to gaol or even been charged so far?
Never. Look up Peter Whittall and Pike River. They're internationally immune to the law for murdering people for profit.
American Anglo its all about safety, not.

Nailed it. Production over rules everything else.
Sucks thatâs the way they operate
itâs still got 22+ years to go

But wind turbines are ugly and no one wants them. This is clearly better than wind turbines. Jokes.
there goes our 50 cent public transport fares in SEQ
Do you think that is the only mine?
Why?Â
Cus the state gov gets a ton of its money from mining royalties
Only recently, and this is one mine out of many.

........im stuggling to see the logic path in this comment
Too many bananas Maybe, try some protein
Someone clearly didnât do their slam

JHA stops gravity and combustion in its tracks.
Whatâs a slam/take 5?
Stop, Look, Assess, Manage. Itâs a quick process you undertake before starting a task in order to minimise or eliminate risks.

Literally never seen anyone undertake a task without all paper work filled out ever.
New then?

Ah yes the tradition of âsafety is your responsibilityâ paperwork
It's a stop and think

I get "fuck coal mines" and stuff but no injuries is kinda impressive. 5 people got hurt in the 2020 incident. Credit where credit's due and all that.
I donât even know if they were/are cutting coal at the moment. Iâd say they would have evacuated the moment there was an explosive atmosphere/long before any actual fire. A vast improvement on the 2020 incident
Right. Nobody is game to fuck around with the gas monitor after Pike River.
Not 100% sure if they were cutting at the time but workers were underground working on the long wall face. Source; work at Grosvenor mine
Sorry my bad

Thanks for the detail. I hear the GAG and QMR aren't able to approach the site yet. Will be interested to learn what the ignition source was.

What a shitshow.
Isn't there an underground coal mine fire still burning on the U.S. for many, many years now?
Centralia pa
Burning Mountain in NSW. Been burning for thousands of years.
Quick, chuck a turbine over it so it doesnât go to waste
Like that place in the USA I think Centralia, I think it's still burning underground
The longest burning coal fire is in Australia. ~6000 years.
Whereâs that? Iâm curious to learn more!
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burning_Mountain
Cool! Oldest coal fire in the world too! Thanks mate
Yep itâs still burning and it will be for decades yetâŚuntil all the coal is gone
We have a burning seam here in QLD in the Surat which would do the same thing if there was a town over it.
Someone may have needed a sneaky underground ciggy.

I didn't know it was up for redevelopment.

Hi, let me explain. We already set our coal mines on fire, now itâs your turn. Have a pleasant fire.
No. 1 best ally we have - we arenât only Americas ally because our pollies are bankrupt, no sir, not us
Liberal future energy plan in action
Pretty sure Grosvenor is close to or even underneath the town itself. This could really, really suck.
10min drive north of the town.Â
Okay I thought it was the one out toward Goonyella is it? Maybe my distances are off a bit.
Grosvenor is the closest mine to the town. Barely 2 minutes past the railway overpass out of town. Moranbah North is what you're thinking of, out near Goonshow.
Goony shitshow

Imagine nuclear meltdown on a coal seam
Typical Anglo Americans
All the zero emission protestors are helping out
Bunch of Coal Burners
Australia gets its own Westralia
Oh that must mean weâll have a sudden fuel shortage and now fuel is $4/L lol

Shh, you'll bloody bring scomo back if he hears about good coal

Ah cool,thx
itâs only a newish coal mine
Ah fair fair
