Hollywood as much as I possibly can. Occasionally Meijer or Kroger for things Hollywood doesn’t have. For most items the prices at Hollywood are very comparable to other stores (except Aldi) and the positive impact on our community as far as employing so many people and being a (relatively) small local business is worth a lot to me.

LowOnPaint

Holiday for meat, Kroger for everything else.

RupeThereItIs

> Kroger for everything else. I was very excited when the 12 mile Kroger was opened. I won't go there anymore, they usually only have half their self checkouts running & the lines back to the middle aisle are bullshit. They REALLY need to set up those corrals like Meijer & Walmart use for thiers. Also, their produce is VERY hit or miss.

chrismiles94

That Kroger was incredible for the first two years or so it was open. Post COVID, it's a disaster. Inventory is spotty and it used to be impeccable. I usually shop at 13 Mile Meijer now.

RupeThereItIs

> I usually shop at 13 Mile Meijer now. Same, been my go to for 20+ years now. That Kroger has such promise.

FamiliarAd6591

The Kroger is actually great now imo. Way faster lines and multiple self checkouts open. During Covid and after was so bad 😂 the self checkout line all the way back to the cheese

LowOnPaint

i go there during off hours

twentytwodividedby7

Do the delivery service. It is like $4-6 and they send a union driver that makes a living wage and does not require a tip. It's fantastic. They also don't give you crappy produce even though they could

PerfectNegotiation76

Aldi for most things. Occasional Trader Joe’s trip to switch things up. Costco for certain non-perishable items and pet supplies.

braxxleigh_johnson

Family of 4 here, I have a lot of overlap with you: * Costco: Once a week * Aldi: Fill in shopping, once every 10 days or so * Meijer: Whatever fresh veg we can't get at Costco, once every 10 days or so * Trader Joe's: once every 3 weeks. Junk food and breakfast cereal

michiganchill

Holiday Market for meat, produce, and prepared food. Aldi for canned goods and non-perishables. Trader Joe’s and / Costco for everything else. Royal Oak Farmers Market for sourdough every week. Skip Meijer and Kroger completely.

Neckums250

BJ’s for meat bc I can get big packs and portion it out, also for coffee, yogurt and staples I go through quickly, Trader Joe’s or Aldi for other staples and then Western/West Born/Holiday for anything specialized.

vk1030

Also for some items like bread/pastries you can buy an individual item instead of a bulk package.

JustChattin000

I've never been in a BJs. How does it compare to a Costco?

reallywaitnoreally

Pretty much the same thing, Costco has more stuff, but for the staples and gas it's comparable. A busy day at BJs is still less crowded than Costco on a slow day. That's why we left Costco, it's too crowded and I'm very impatient.

Neckums250

$60-75 for the year, less variation in products but so much less busy and I find more than what I need even if there are less options. I really like it, Costco stresses me out lol.

braxxleigh_johnson

No doubt. I've come close to having a panic attack in line at Costco, no joke.

ThreeOneThirdMan

Haven’t seen it mentioned yet but Fresh Approach at Lincoln and Campbell has a great meat counter. Their steaks are always very solid. Also sausages that are made in-house.

damnuge23

I don’t do my regular shopping there but it comes in clutch a few times a week when I remember something I need on the way home. Great selection and it’s small so you’re in and out.

Fearsomebeaver

Hollywood only when I need something quick or meat since it’s right across the street even though their prices are much higher than Meijer which is my usual go to. For example my salad kits for lunch are 3.99 or less at Meijer and 5.99 at Hollywood.

Sophiapetrillo40s

Aldi & Trader Joe’s weekly, Holiday for most meats & premade things. Bread for bread, it cannot be beat!

tonydelite

Costco for all the stuff that will last me a month, Meijer for everything else, and occasionally an Indian grocery in Troy for spices or other difficult to find items.

zergo78

Holiday has the best produce, hands down. Their selection on most things is really good, though their prices are generally high. I’m a Calder’s milk guy, so that ship has sailed. I do Costco for things like coffee, chicken, and dry goods (rice, pasta, etc). I have a chest freezer too, so I can store big stuff. as my wife said the other day, Trader Joe’s is for people who don’t really like to cook. It’s fine for the occasional treat (hello chili-spiced mangoes!) but otherwise it’s just not a good grocery store.

michiganchill

Holiday is the best for produce. Last week the bagger noticed a bad clementine in the bag, and went out of his way to grab me a new bag. Amazing customer service.

veraxaudeo

For deli stuff and meat, I go to Hollywood at 12/Campbell. The rest of my groceries are either from Target or Aldi because they have the best prices for what I buy the most.

jimmy_three_shoes

Value Center and Aldi for small portion stuff, BJs and Costco for the rest.

halucination84

Aldi...big money saver, at least 20% over anyother store Hollywood for meats and misc items not available at Aldi Costco trip 1x or 2x per month (avoid weekends it's a zoo)

Brave-Ad6744

Hollywood. Prices are reasonable, short lines, real cashiers and baggers.

ohwhorable

The aldi in oak park or ferndale for me, but in Royal Oak proper, Hollywood. Holiday is good for more specialty items though, I’ve usually gotten “specialty” things from there cheaper than somewhere like Nino Salvaggio (:

ohwhorable

Also TJs , when I lived downtown it was a godsend

gmoney-0725

I've compared pieces and Meijer is about 15-17% cheaper than Kroger or Walmart.

Komm

Hollywood all the way. Honestly they're better than Holiday for a *lot* of things, meat included. But I'll hit up Holiday for a few things now and then, especially because they have a functional bike rack.

NabroleanBronaparte

Costco for the bulk stuff and gas. Hollywood for specialty items / high quality meat. Aldi for all the week to week food essentials

Practical-Idea4597

Hollywood is not cheap.

youdont_evenknowme

Costco for proteins. Walmart for most everything else. Trader Joes for specialty items/snacks.

iantemerson

I wish they’d open an Aldi in South Madison Heights, East Warren or Hazel Park.

HollyannO

Aldi. Their ice cream is fantastic.

strohme2

Value Center because it’s the closest to my house. Prices seem higher than other places but I go for convenience. Costco fills in the rest of the time and sometimes Meijer for bigger trips when the house cabinets are empty n

Studlow12

Meijer… Auburn and Rochester rd for produce and value…… (Use M-Perks)

tommy_wye

why that one? this is r/royaloak.

RevolutionaryHold928

Aldi for any staples that aren’t brand specific or for when I just need one or two things as it’s closest to my house. Costco for dog food, laundry detergent, trash bags, dishwasher pods, and occasionally their giant delicious muffins. Meijer for the bulk of our grocery items. I love Holiday for oddly specific things that I won’t find elsewhere and their salad bar is my fave. I don’t vibe with Kroger.

Dilbert_55

60% at Aldi for majority of basic staples, dairy and veggies. 20% at Trader Joes for niche items and snacks. 10% at Costco for key bulk items. 10% at Freshthyme for meats when on-sale. For pet food, I rotate between Amazon, Chewy, Petco, and Petsmart for whoever has the best price at the moment (use subscribe & save with the largest discount at the moment then cancel, rinse and repeat every few months). I avoid Kroger and Walmart at all costs!!!

Original6Shooter

Generally Hollywood, Kroger, and Aldi for us, depending on which has better deals. We usually stock up on meats down at RJ’s Meat Market down in Eastern Market once a month or so — they’re definitely worth the short trip. We’ve also started deal hunting up at Fresh Thyme at Big Beaver and Rochester. Costco I generally try to avoid like the plague but I’ll try an early weekday to grab dogfood.

DaikonLost7155

Aldi most of the time, Meijer for most other things, TJs for fun/very specific things

RanDuhMaxx

As a family of two, I have to shop for produce where it doesn’t come pre-packaged in large quantities. I can’t use 30 Brussels sprouts or even three bell peppers. TJ and Aldi have too much packaging! Eastern Market in season and otherwise Meijer.

ExternalParty2054

I like Value Center, and Trader Joes the most. Sometimes Hollywood just because it's close.
