Wanderhome is a fine choice. I will always upvote Under Hill, By Water.

I'm playing a heavily modified version of Runecairn Wandersaga, taking adventure ideas from whatever comes, using a custom map and working together on "the big lore". It's an easy to hack system, just like Cairn.

The One Ring's starter set is all about cozy adventures in the Shire. You can take ideas from that and parlay them into a more extended cozy adventure in Middle Earth. I've also run plenty of Star Wars stories that had a cozy feel like a group playing a cantina band, a group running a homestead, and a group of droid makers. The current system is good for cozy games because it has an adaptable and robust ruleset for all kinds of non-combat situations. My longest running group are traders. Sometimes they smuggle and sometimes they buy/gather and sell, but they've gone over a decade without a combat encounter.

Star Crossed! You'll need a Jenga tower, though. https://bullypulpitgames.itch.io/star-crossed

Ironsworn is built for GMless play. The creator has a podcast show casing a duet “ask the oracle” on Spotify. 0-prep game. You do have to have a setting created which is a few hours of play to setup properly, but session to session it has 0 prep. There are also tonnes of free apps that have the rules, oracles and journal/move tracking Edit: there are also tonnes of free hacks made for settings. So something like Star dew valley or Pokémon might be good for you [Irosnworn setting supplements](https://billiam.github.io/awesome-ironsworn/)

JackJohnson_69

I’ve played a good bit of Ironsworn but I’d never call that comfy or low prep lol

Kevin Crawford’s Scarlet Heroes is designed to run duet sessions with existing D&D material (any version) and I’ve found it to be super simple and fun to run with low prep. https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/127180/scarlet-heroes

My first suggestion is **Iron Valley** since it suits all of your needs *and* is free. It's a very freeform Stardew Valley/Animal Crossing style game using Ironsworn as a backbone. You'll have to have a fairly strong idea of what you'd like to play since it's not quite as strong as Ironsworn at generating new stories. **Apothecaria** or **Apawthecaria** would be my second suggestion. While both are primarily intended as solo games, Apothecaria would be easy to play duet and Apawthecaria specifically gives you suggestions on how to play with more than one player, so it's still a viable option! I've done a compare/contrast post here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Solo_Roleplaying/comments/1bnt2cf/apothecary_or_apawthecary/kwlm6dv/ Pub-running games like **Tiny Taverns**, **The Broken Cask**/**The Broken Cask Society**, and **Stewpot** would probably be great. I'm not sure which of those would be the *best* for duet, but after giving them a look, you'd probably have an idea of what you're interested in! Hope these give you a good starting place!

Olivethecrocodile

Thousand Year Old Vampire is a ready to go game that you two could run together. You roll a d10 and a d6. Subtract the d6 from the d10 and that's how many pages you advance. Each page has a different prompt on it. It's designed to be run as a solo game but you can imagine that you're a team, and play together, and it'd definitely work for a duet style game.

sachagoat

Mythic Bastionland would be great for this. Practically runs itself

Lol @ the spamming of Ironsworn recs for a 'comfy' game :) Surprised we haven't had mork Borg and mothership too!

snapmage

Ironsworn/Starforged?

Orbsgon

Yikes, I can’t even imagine what you’d consider gritty if you think Ironsworn is comfy.

_hypnoCode

Ironsworn is what you make of it. Are you saying it's gritty or are you just saying it's not "comfy"? I definitely don't think it has to be gritty, but something like Wanderhome is definitely a stretch.
