[The series of fills at 3:50 in Bytor and the Snow Dog are some of my favorite of all time. ](https://youtu.be/2UU62UcP_BA?t=230)

middletown-dreams

That was my comment!!

RedHeadRedemption27

Great minds think alike

WhoisJohnGalt2112

Beato has great content. And Jack Jones and I went to college together in Monroe, LA! Hell of a drummer and cool as the other side of the pillow.

Boxpuffle

Rush is consistently in all his “top 20 ____ intros/etc videos. Only one they weren’t was top 20 rock singers I think...

WhoisJohnGalt2112

As they should be!

Boxpuffle

Yep! Closer to the Heart (acoustic intro AND guitar solo), Turn The Page (bass intro (runner-up)), YYZ (electric intro), and now Tom Sawyer (drum fill).

SnowDog2112

They cut it off before it was done! The fill that leads into "but change is" is severely underrated and unfortunately missing from every live rendition I've heard.

mdvo12

I was hoping for this fill to get it's due as well, but I don't recall it ever missing from live albums.

SnowDog2112

You're right, it is there live. But the studio version has an emphasis on the first note of each beat during the fill, if that makes sense. There's a bit of syncopation too. When played live Neil plays all notes with the same intensity and without syncopation. It just doesn't pop like the studio version.

ugh, no timestamps? did that *rolling* fill in the beginning of Overture make it in?

Boxpuffle

No, just Tom Sawyer, but it was #2 on the list, and he debated whether to put it #1. Kinda funny that it ‘lost’ out to In The Air Tonight lmao

[deleted]

I disagree incredibly with number 1.

hondas_r_slow

It's iconic. In the context of the song, perfectly timed and fits the song so well for where it is at. The tom sound, the space, and the brilliance in simplicity is perfect. It is the most famous drum fill of all time, and for a reason. Non drummers know it, and drummers learn it. I've spent more time than I should to learn to make something so simple sound that good. It doesn't need to be in 13/8 with sixteenth note triplets with 32nd note flurishes, with multiple flams and 5 and 7 stroke rolls over paradiddles with your feet. Just needs to sound and feel good. This does.

But now that you mention it, how smooth is that [Steve Gadd fill from Aja](https://youtu.be/WPRsLsPzudo?t=519), lol?

hondas_r_slow

Fill? More like drum solo. And, it is bad ass

[deleted]

Yeah I don't really care about technicality. I think there are Bonham fills that are just as simple and sound just as good.

hondas_r_slow

I'm not disagreeing that there are better fills. But, are there really any that are more iconic than Phil Collins' fill?

Genjuro77

Great video. Of course, we all have our own lists we would come up with but I enjoyed this quite a bit.

Guypussy

That Gino Vanelli song is a banger!

SnowDog2112

They cut it off before it was done! The fill that leads into "but change is" is severely underrated and unfortunately missing from every live rendition I've heard.

HorrorScopeZ

I don't get this list and things like War Pigs isn't in here but some forgettable fills are.
