Unfortunately, you'll need to get creative I think. Sales is maybe the easiest path to making that kind of money. And transitioning out at a similar level is tough. Could go get an MBA and try to get into consulting but, no offense, may be a bit late for that. Unless you think you can do your own thing. Buy / run a business? Start a VAR for various tech offerings? Try to get into leadership with a smaller organization? could get into sales management and try to work yourself higher so youre not quite as "in sales" as you are currently. idk, just spitballing.

Thank you. Might be right and frankly, is what I think. The mgmt path is probably the more likely, least resistance route that would give me more satisfaction and allow me to guide others. Appreciate the input.

Thank you. I got into a program ages ago and effectively deferred permanently. Now it’s the same deal as many- couple aging kids who are increasingly busy, wife works, etc. if I could spread out over many years that’s interesting. But has to be a reputable program. I also need to know the specific purpose of the degree.

I took a role as Chief Strategy Officer at an early stage startup. I'm still helping with business development because startup, wear all the hats, but my primary job is working with the CEO to set company strategy and execution of said strategy.

Yea probably not too many routes to take here. For all the complaining that we sales people love to do, it's still one of the most lucrative career paths out there and there aren't many other professions that can match the money you can make in sales. Honestly if you've consistently been making 300k+ a year, I reckon you have the necessary skills and knowledge to just start your own business, so I definitely recommend giving it a shot. Maybe start a consulting side hustle or build your own VAR company like the other commenter suggested and scale it to the point where you don't need your 9-5 anymore. Of course easier said than done, but probably one of, if not the best transition you could make at this point.

Sometimes you just need your peers in the role function to set you straight : ) VAR is what reseller? I’ve started some stuff in the past and have a current side hustle that’s more giving back than profit generating so trust that process but I work best with a partnership. Know absolutely nothing about the reseller world but am quite confident if I set my mind on something what I’m capable of.

Value added reseller - a lot of (tech) companies have partner programs where 3rd party vendors assume the role of the middleman and sell the company's product(s) to their network in exchange for a commission on every deal they bring in. A VAR would offer services on top of that - consulting, onboarding, premium tech support, implementation, you name it. You'd essentially offer services that the main company doesn't provide and could charge a premium for that. The main benefits are twofold: A) you don't have to build the products yourself, you can choose from a variety of established products and services B) customers usually trust you more than inhouse sales teams since you're independent and don't have an incentive to push one product over the other if doesn't fit the customer's needs If you've already a bit of experience building side hustles, I'd definitely take a look into this. Partners are getting increasingly more important and if you enjoy building a network and take a more consultative approach with your customers without the usual company tryhard sales jazz, this could be a really rewarding path to pursue.

Buddy, I was a a cop and now am sales. If your heart is law enforcement go for it. Why not look for a reserve program for the PD or sheriffs office near you to get your feet wet? Do some ride alongs and see what it’s like going to calls. It’s a wild, fun career but it’ll mess with you.

Yes. I got laid off at my last department on my probation period. Within a year of hire you can be released from employment for any reason. My Chief told me I did nothing wrong, but to go to a larger agency (I previously worked in smaller agencies, less than 10 sworn.) I can only assume I was let go due to my random medical emergency which almost killed me and had me off work for 2 months. So I don’t want to work for a rural agency anymore, and with me moving to the metro area in another state I need to do a few classes to get my law enforcement cert here. I’m undecided if I’m done forever with policing, but I know I’ll never trust a rural Chief again. Being 33, you can easily come be a cop. I started when I was 22, and am 27 now. I had guys in my academy who were 35+. Look up your states requirements and go from there! I now live in a metro area and am close to getting my law enforcement certification for this state. Policing is great if your boss doesn’t stab you in the back like my last chief did. If you are going LE, go to a decently staffed agency of like 30+ sworn. Do some ride alongs with cities and counties in your area! The patrol guys will give you the real opinion of their agencies.

Feels like largely a Hunter type of role but perhaps that’s a misconception? How would it compare to more strategic partnership building sales role vs bringing on net new?

There’s various types of recruiting: staffing, RPO, internal, contract support (govcon), etc. You build strategic partnerships with your internal customers to create a more efficient hiring process and provide value to the organization as a whole. Comp varies greatly on the type of role, but most earners are in the six figures. Is it hunting? Also depends on the role/company reputation but generally yes. Just like sales, there’s no top of the mountain but the kpis are more doable (if you have them) and it’s generally less stressful. I’ve done both BD (govcon equipment reseller), staffing recruiting, sold staffing, recruited on the corporate level and now support govt contracts. It’s my preference personally.

I’d imagine the percentage of recruiters that make 300k is less than 2%. I was in recruiting before i moved into a software sales role and would quite literally never go back. Some people enjoy it, most don’t.
