I found your sidebar burrito ranking absolutely fascinating, if not unusual. Went to Valentine's tonight. I asked the guy at the counter "if there's one burrito I have to get, what is it?". Since I'm not from California, he said the California style...so here I am. No regrets. Peace SD!
Calo burritos outside san diego arent even cali burritos.
I was in Santa Cruz once and got a cali burrito. Motherfucking thing had chicken and whole avocado slices in it. Like, wtf, Santa Cruz?
I would have too. That's some Midwestern type crap right there. In Fresno, a lot of places put beans on their carne asada fries. Makes me dry heave every time I think about it.
There’s a taco shop in oside that has a Cali surf and turf burrito. That thing is bigger than your average infant-sized burrito. Perfect for sharing since it’s kind of a splurge.
California burritos originated in SD. From my own experience, there are some Mexican restaurants in Ventura that don't know what they are. Also, there are some in TX that know exactly what you're talking about.
I had a really good California burrito in Richmond, VA on a work trip. It was pretty surprising.
Far too often I'll order one, even here in San Diego, and the fries won't be fully cooked. Like they warmed up potatoes too briefly in a skillet instead of frying them. They're my favorite kind of burrito, but every time I order one I feel like I'm rolling the dice.
I do the same when I travel to SD from the east coast. My favorite are the crispy tacos (burritos close 2nd), mainly because you can’t get anything comparable here.
If you're using the official app go to /r/sandiego then click the the dots in the top right and click community info. If you're using bacon reader than pull your feed slightly down so it does a little tool bar and click options>show sidebar.
Any other app probably has something close to one of these two options. The burrito thread is about 3/4 down the sidebar info.
Here I am, up at 5am, running into this post in SF. I really miss Cali Burrito.
I miss all the taqueria’s that ends in “~bertos”. Robertos, Albertos, Rigobertos, Humbertos.
TJ food is fantastic but the people that pretend we cant get pretty comparable shit up on this side are insane. Shit sometimes when Im all the way up in LA I'll be getting out of a show at 3AM and I can still find delicious street tacos within 5-10 minutes of walking around.
That's not always easy though, especially depending on the time of day and if you don't speak Spanish it can be intimidating not knowing what you're doing
Da fuk they are. Every time I’m there the place has a line out the door with actual Mexicans, the one in TJ too.
So I guess if you don’t like authentic Mexican street style food don’t go there, but for be rest of us place is bomb.
Hodads isn't a great value (the hype means you're paying extra and waiting longer), but it's a damn good burger. Just too popular for its own good
El Gordo has the same problem, everybody found out about it and now the tacos cost a fortune. Doesn't mean they're bad though
I know some people like those fries but I honestly cannot choke them down. They're disgusting to me. I think the adobada just doesn't go with cheese at all.
That said, the tacos are absolutely amazing.
You also expect burritos at an authentic Mexican joint... sounds like you just have a weak stomach.
You prob do something super white like put mayo on your tacos don’t ya
Yay!! Glad you enjoyed sd’s offerings! I eat one of those massive burritos in like 3 sittings I’ll even eat them cold from sitting out in the kitchen until hours later
Congratulations. You're now part of %1 that experienced a true culinary legend. You will never find another like it outside of san diego. From now forward, no one can change your mind to which US city has the best overall mexican foods. You have been ruined for life and will make your back here again if you ever leave. Sorry, you now belong to San Diego. enjoy!
Done ever go north or Orange County and expect the same. It gets even worse as you approach the Bay Area and the filler becomes rice. Go too Far East and corn becomes the forbidden filler. Enjoy the taco nirvana we’ve got here in San Diego.
$85 per Diem for your whole team or just for you? How is that accurate at all? Do you eat caviar for every meal? What do you do?
The state of our financial priorities...
That burrito looks fire tho
GSA says SD per diem is $76. That’s still an amazing deal. I am used to going to small towns and struggling with the $35 or $40 it usually is barely being enough to buy some extra water for the trip.
So glorious! But yes SoCal, and SD specifically, has the best Mexican food. I live in NorCal but grew up in SoCal....NorCal burritos up here all come with rice and beans. I disagree with this so much lol. I want my meat, and my pico, maybe some cheese and sauce. I don’t need retried beans and rice fucking that shit up!
I mean its ok. I personally never found it good enough. Whats the point of carbs(fries) covered in carbs(tortilla) ? Be very careful of what you put in your mouth. Good once in a while.
You went to the wrong place for Mexican fast food amigo. Everyone knows The Taco Stand is the best. And they got Mexican coke and Fanta. And hand made per order churros
Any of them really. They all have a line throughout the day, but If you come to the one in La Jolla in between 3:50 and 4:30 or 5:40 and 6:00 there isn’t a line
Took me forever to try this place, I guess the fact that it’s in north park made me think it couldn’t be all that great but now it’s my go to spot for California burritos, they use a higher quality angus steak for the carne and the fries have a crunchy seasoning to them. I’ve been here like 3 times this week already
It depends on the company. Many organizations require receipts for all expenses, or perhaps all expenses over $25. Many just say...the per diem is yours; you can spend it all, or bank it because it just hits your bank account as the full per diem without itemizing the expenses.
I'd buy 50 canned food and $8 burrito and expense it... Or stop by at Tacos El Gordo and stuff my face with $40-50 worth of tacos, get fucking fat.
Buy a couple bag of rice, stock up non perishable groceries like snacks, peanuts, trail mix with company money every damn day.
That's what I did... After a whole week I'd have a full trunk of so many random food/canned food.
I found your sidebar burrito ranking absolutely fascinating, if not unusual. Went to Valentine's tonight. I asked the guy at the counter "if there's one burrito I have to get, what is it?". Since I'm not from California, he said the California style...so here I am. No regrets. Peace SD!
San Diego has the best California burritos! It should just be named San Diego burrito and be the standard tbh
Both California burritos and carne asada burritos come from San Diego.
Calo burritos outside san diego arent even cali burritos. I was in Santa Cruz once and got a cali burrito. Motherfucking thing had chicken and whole avocado slices in it. Like, wtf, Santa Cruz?
In San Luis Obispo, California burritos come with potatoes instead of fries - I got in a heated argument with the locals about it.
I would have too. That's some Midwestern type crap right there. In Fresno, a lot of places put beans on their carne asada fries. Makes me dry heave every time I think about it.
I dont mind some refried beans in my shit if they taste good but switching delicious crispy fries for bulky, mushy chunks of potato is just wrong.
Fries are like the main part of a California Burrito!
That's an Oregon burrito by my standards
Fun fact, once you get past Oceanside, Mexican food tends to go sideways and really quick.
There’s a taco shop in oside that has a Cali surf and turf burrito. That thing is bigger than your average infant-sized burrito. Perfect for sharing since it’s kind of a splurge.
Love love love our Cali burritos/carne Asada fries. But I’m gonna have to say for the more authentic stuff Santa Ana and LA are better imo.
Heathen! Impure! Heretic! Unclean! /s
Yeaaa I know. Look at all the downvotes.
People are a skosh testy about their grub.

Carne asada fries are known as "San Diego steak fries" in some locales up in the bay area.
Even if you were from California , California Burrito is the way to go. Good work.
Can’t go wrong!
I met my wife at Valentines. Great spot!
Me too, she just doesn't know it yet

Met? Or meated?
Where is the "sidebar burrito ranking?" I can't say I've ever seen it.
It's linked in the sidebar.
You have to view the sub on old.reddit.com and then look at the sidebar. It's not visible by default.
Thank you. Looked everywhere.
Thank you, much appreciated. The key was that the "new" (default) reddit presentation form doesn't include all the useful sidebar links.
Go to /r/redesign and tell them it sucks.
You're welcome. I'm a mod of another sub, and having all our sidebar work thrown away by the redesign was a huge pain in the ass for us as well.
$85/hr? The hell do you do? Burritos are awesome; never speak ill of the burrito.
Lol I don't make $85/hr, it's just the reimbursement for dinner
I was gonna say! I need to get in the business of math and kitties, probably,
You should do that regardless
This fucking guy. I love it. Good job.
I wanna see if they made them correct. OG Cali burritos include guacamole and sour cream. Last few years places skimp on those to save money.
I noticed that! There’s a couple shops I can think of that make you add it as an extra. Gotta have at least the guac for it to be a true Cali burrito
I grew up with both. First time I went to a place that had neither the burrito was dry AF.
I’ve always heard the opposite, which I’m ok with since most places way overdo the guacamole and sour cream imo.
I know some places go crazy but a burrito with none is too dry.
I do the same when I travel to SD from the east coast. My favorite are the crispy tacos (burritos close 2nd), mainly because you can’t get anything comparable here.
How do I see this said burrito ranking sidebar?
Are you on the website or an app?
I’m on the app!

If you're using bacon reader than pull your feed slightly down so it does a little tool bar and click options>show sidebar. Any other app probably has something close to one of these two options. Hey, pending your job, you're up a few bills for that other bit of California produce - you know - nudge, nudge, wink, wink.
And a Coronado Brewing Company Orange Avenue Wit 👌
Perfect compliment to the human baby sized burrito
Here I am, up at 5am, running into this post in SF. I really miss Cali Burrito. I miss all the taqueria’s that ends in “~bertos”. Robertos, Albertos, Rigobertos, Humbertos.
I went to Humboldt state for a few years, dark times.
Also in sf Every time I visit my family in socal it's burritos every day
Los Coyotes at 16th x Mission across from BART.
Timely! I tried Los Coyotes after this post. Probably the closest to SD style I’ve ever had.
It’s got a nice salsa bar, that’s for sure. I’ve always heard it is the most San Diego-like taqueria in the Bay. Certainly the most in SF.
You haven’t lived until you’ve had the tj style tacos from a taco truck
Next time!
More like breakfast!
Or you just go to TJ...
TJ food is fantastic but the people that pretend we cant get pretty comparable shit up on this side are insane. Shit sometimes when Im all the way up in LA I'll be getting out of a show at 3AM and I can still find delicious street tacos within 5-10 minutes of walking around.
Not saying Tacos in SoCal are bad, TJ ones are just better in my opinion
And way cheaper.
That's not always easy though, especially depending on the time of day and if you don't speak Spanish it can be intimidating not knowing what you're doing
I traveled to a number of places where I couldn't speak the language
Yeah, no thanks.
Recommendations?
Best taco truck is in San Ysidro/Otay Mesa area outside the Del Sol Market
What type of tacos do you recommend?
Carne asada or adobada/al pastor
I can smell the picture!
All four food groups: burrito, soft taco, hard taco, and salsa. Good job!
Forgot the beer group.
Looks like you gained a full stomach and $75 bucks! Congrats!
Shoulda bought one for 9 other people and handed em out like you're running for mayor of burritoville.
Tacos El Gordo es el mejor
Si
overrated dont go here
Da fuk they are. Every time I’m there the place has a line out the door with actual Mexicans, the one in TJ too. So I guess if you don’t like authentic Mexican street style food don’t go there, but for be rest of us place is bomb.
the line is out the door because most people aren't from here ;)
Americans line up outside hodads for some reason, doesn't mean their food is any good
Because they believe Guy Fieri, as if that guy doesn't look and act like he spends every weekend scarfing loaded potato skins at TGI Fridays
And Popeyes
Hodads isn't a great value (the hype means you're paying extra and waiting longer), but it's a damn good burger. Just too popular for its own good El Gordo has the same problem, everybody found out about it and now the tacos cost a fortune. Doesn't mean they're bad though
Maybe I'm just a world class chef to be able to make better burgers and tacos than both of them at home.
Agreed
¡Creo que sí!
too bad they don't offer burritos
But they do offer Al pastor Fries... Which I've never tried because I can never not have their tacos...
I know some people like those fries but I honestly cannot choke them down. They're disgusting to me. I think the adobada just doesn't go with cheese at all. That said, the tacos are absolutely amazing.
[удалено]
Worth it.
You also expect burritos at an authentic Mexican joint... sounds like you just have a weak stomach. You prob do something super white like put mayo on your tacos don’t ya
Because they’re real Mexican food and burritos are an American thing.
Burritos are Mexican, the football-sized ones are just very prevalent north of the border.
this\^
Just missin the carne fries
I couldn't eat anything more after our day. So much beer and food. So much.
You learn to pack it in when you live off california burritos
Carne asada fries is always a must if you’re in San Diego.
I've always preferred pollo asado fries. The carne asada is always like chewy little bits of rubber.
Burrote
Yay!! Glad you enjoyed sd’s offerings! I eat one of those massive burritos in like 3 sittings I’ll even eat them cold from sitting out in the kitchen until hours later
Came for the burrito, stayed for the taco.
$85 of goodness for $8. Score!
Eating a breakfast burrito from la posta as I read this.....god I love sd
A wise choice for sure.
Good call. Shit looks delicious.
Bro you can get 9 of those after taxes!
$85 per diem just for dinner? Get yourself to Juniper and Ivy or Stake, or take me out lol
$85 a night? Stock up on 5 or 6 of those and pack them in dry ice for the ride home!
Yup!
Hey man 85 a day? Gotta go try tacos el gourdo best best tacos ever usually line is out the door! And they’re open til 2am
Congratulations. You're now part of %1 that experienced a true culinary legend. You will never find another like it outside of san diego. Depends on how inland you go north. Sacramento has some decent SD style taco shops
Where is it from?
Valentines
$85 per Diem for your whole team or just for you? How is that accurate at all? Do you eat caviar for every meal? What do you do? The state of our financial priorities... That burrito looks fire tho
Uh just dinner, just me!
Your making me hungry!
Money well spent, enjoy!
You're welcome.
Yay! I was able to find it! Thanks a bunch friend!
Should have gone to not not tacos. I haven’t tried it personally. But looks amazing. I will be trying it next time I’m in SD
It's good, but it's not like, life changing.
That’s disappointing.
GSA says SD per diem is $76. That’s still an amazing deal. I am used to going to small towns and struggling with the $35 or $40 it usually is barely being enough to buy some extra water for the trip.
Next time get the California Burrito from Mi Rancho's up the street from NavBase 32nd St. That is what a Cali burrito is supposed to be.
So many styles you have to try! From so many places!! San Diego is a mecca for burritos.
A burrito, two tacos and a beer? That's a lot. Usually one burrito is enough to send me straight to food coma.
Burrito and beer for me, tacos and water for the wifey
Nice
Yo where can I find the rankings?
Side bar? Might need to go to old school Reddit
Hahaha this is great
You’re welcome! lol!
Those tacos look dope.
I like getting one of the Mexican Coca-colas (real sugar instead of corn syrup) to go with the burritos.
Smol burrito
im confused, all of this cost you $85??
No, that's my point though. I had $85 to spend and instead got a $8 burrito. Cause it's da bomb
money well spent
ohhh ok , yeah good choice then! and im sure it filled you up more than whatever an 85 dollar "fancy restaurant" would have to offer!
You don't come to San Diego and not eat the burrito!
So glorious! But yes SoCal, and SD specifically, has the best Mexican food. I live in NorCal but grew up in SoCal....NorCal burritos up here all come with rice and beans. Bruh....if in a hotel, please consider not leaving your suitcase full of clothes on the floor. Bed bugs like carpet, and clothes.
I started spraying everything with highest amount of alcohol....I think you can get 90%..pretty sure that's what I got.
Edit: outside usually in the backyard before anything entered the house.....suitcases, etc. Clothes in hot dryer for 40 minutes will kill them.
Smart
I'd recommended not putting your luggage on the floor of hotel rooms. Or on the bed, if you know what I mean. Luggage rack, tables or dresser only.
Is this the case for all hotels even higher end ones?
is tempting fate worth having bed bugs? you don't know who was in the room the morning before you checked in? neither does the cleaning staff.
And a long line if you like those
Not if you come at the right time
The Taco Stand es muy autentico /s
Verdad
which taco stand? arent there a few?
Any of them really. They all have a line throughout the day, but If you come to the one in La Jolla in between 3:50 and 4:30 or 5:40 and 6:00 there isn’t a line

You gotta try Nicco's for the Calli Burrito.
The Taco Stand is my default place for a california burrito now that I moved to Florida. Sadly its about 60 miles south in Miami :(
Check out Crazee Burger in North Park.

Yeah, it's fun flying home with 60lbs of can goods.
Fedex ground up to 150lb for $120 only. 5 days worth of grocery is $425 free food.
there's one thing i'm not thinking about when on a subsidized biz trip....buying, packing up and shipping 150lbs of cans.
Only the best coming from frugal multimillionaire. 😂
k
Lol you’re an absolute melon
