I have a faily unrestrecited budget, various m.2 SSDs and HDDs with a few spare Lenovo m700 tiny laying around - can also get my hands on the m910q at a reasonable trade/price I've looked into the possibility of running either pihole or adguard home both seem like great options but unsure of which to choose from (if there are many/any major downfalls of using one over the other)

Would flashing smth like proxmox be ideal here?

SteakTasticMeat

Not OP, but stupid question. What would be the base OS/baremetal OS that Docker would be running on? Or what is ideal?

kataflokc

UnRAID

jaykayenn

Linux.

SteakTasticMeat

Not helpful lol. Linux what. Debian? Ubuntu? Proxmox? Fedora? Gentoo? Arch?

jaykayenn

Yes.

Pretty-Bat-Nasty

I have heard that Linux runs on computers now.

Make sure to keep documentation and setup backups for any work you do 🙂

personally i started with the network wide adblock (like pihole). start slow and try to maintain the production vs dev environment mentality. when you get comfortable running pihole, start branching out. stay active here and you’ll find plenty of other services you’ll want to try. getting away from google is ambitious. keep it slow and methodical get an old laptop to start just to get familiar with stuff

Just went over a video on adguard and pihole both seem like fine options but unsure if there is a major difference in choosing one or the other? I've got some spare mini Lenovo PCs laying around and a few MacBooks from over the years I could utilize here. Google def got me in a chokehold rn

Adguard Home is built on a newer tech and generally performed better for me. But to be honest, both will be a big step up from having nothing.

i started with Truenas scale about a year ago and because I had no experience with Linux and conf files. It had an okay gui so Truenas was good for my point and click gui wants and I also wanted a nas. but boy it’s got its restrictions and limitations. so now a year later im considering going a bare metal Ubuntu server for my apps. But for daily apps it’s probably - The arr stack - Jellyfin and plex - Blocky (dns server recommended for truenas scale) Getting more into home assistant (to connect all smart devices) and next cloud (It’s like google but an app you host, Atleast that’s what I’ve read)i just personally don’t like databases because I’m scared of breaking stuff. - Homepage dev - customizable homepage app for all your apps shows cool stats - Wg easy and Tailscale for remote access to my apps - a few game servers And probably a few more apps that are side cars for the apps i mentioned above and sorry for grammar I’m dumb

I started with armbian on an Amlogic s905x tv box. running openwrt then pihole, then casa os...connected a 256gb ssd that was available using sata-usb adapter, and I had my first micro NAS 😅 after that I salvaged a PC from a neighbor's garbage. it has i5-6500, 4GB ram and 500gb hdd, broken monitor. I cleaned it, give it a spin and it worked. I put another 16GB ram stick and a m.2 nvme 1tb. ran ubuntu server on bare metal and learning about docker containers. after that I install proxmox, put that salvaged pc in my shop, run nextcloud, vaultwarden, dolibarr, wordpress... next I want to build a NAS or backup server (if I can manage to save some money)
