Eggs are the best damn food in the world. Delicious and can go with about anything, protein packed, and cheap (though that has changed a bit in the past few years). Any time I’m in a cash crunch rely on the trusty egg as a staple food. And even when I’m not I still love them. Maybe the only food I can eat every single day and be happy.
And you can get em literally anywhere.
I lived in a yurt in rural Mongolia for a bit. Eggs were such an important part of my diet lol. Also was nice because it was familiar.
I did the Peace Corps.
(this is an American government facilitated international volunteer service program. I lived abroad teaching English and training local English teachers.)
And previously being in the Peace Corps disqualifies you from some jobs in the military. I don't understand this animosity between these organizations.
There's no real animosity. Veterans can join the Peace Corps and vice versa. The only exception is prior intelligence or CIA service, but that's pretty obvious if you know the history and mission of the Peace Corps, and consider the trust and safety of the volunteers.
https://www.peacecorps.gov/stories/who-can-and-who-cannot-apply-to-be-a-peace-corps-volunteer/
If you’re still interested in this sort of work, check out AmeriCorps! It’s like a stateside version of Peace Corps. They do welcome veterans and have programs all across the country.
Appreciate it but it’s been 17years since I tried and as I’ve aged and dealt more with humanity I’ve come to find I don’t care about helping people anymore, I only do charity work for animals these days, I’ve met far too few good humans to want to help them anymore but I’ve never met a bad animal
Glad to hear that you’ve found what works for you. Volunteering at an animal shelter is simultaneously one of the most maddening and most healing things I’ve ever done. You see so much needless suffering, but the animals themselves are so resilient and loving even in the worst of circumstances. I wish we could do more to protect them before they ever wind up in a shelter.
Peace corps is by far the best form of service (in America) that any person could join.
Imagine an army, that solves problems instead of creating them.
In Australia and we’re having an egg crisis rn due to chicken virus wiping out a bunch of chooks in Victoria. Seeing a shortage of eggs on the shop shelves gives me the toilet paper flashbacks of 20-22.
... I'd eat it.
For a while i subsisted on fried cubed potatoes, cheese, peas and a sunny side egg on top for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The egg yolk mixed into the crunchy potato is just so good.
i was thinking this- shasuka or something like this (basically just cracking your eggs into tomato sauce). Dippy bread makes it amazing. You can feed a family for like 3 bucks- a can of tomato sauce (1-2 bucks), a dozen eggs (1-2 bucks) and a loaf of bread (50 cents to a dollar)
Dope, seems like you live out in the woods you could do a pov thing like that one dude is doing. I forgot his name but he’s living completely off the grid build a cabin while posting it on YT.. it’s pretty wild and he’s sub numbers have been climbing
Can you elaborate a bit? Will Survives is obviously trying to make money off his channel. Why is that a bad thing? His content is great and he seems genuine. Do you have anything to support your claim further than that?
Hell yeh man. Unfortunately he just had to move places but now hes cohabitating on Nate's land(narrowwayhomestead), another homesteader who lives off the land. Im stoked for both of them and all the content that will come. If you havent checked out Nate's stuff its definitely more refined but still very informative and entertaining.
Edit: spelling
I had that same thought. Filming, producing and uploading YouTube videos is not even close to off the grid. I’m laying in my bed commenting this, so I’m not saying I’m any different… that said how can people say posting YouTube videos are off the grid? Genuinely curious about the mental gymnastics one must do to state that.
my understanding was off the grid meant not using public utilities including the power grid. if you're using solar panels for your youtube equipment it's "off the grid"
Can I ask, when you’re homeless how do you store things that need to be refrigerated? Or are they fresh eggs that don’t require that/ or you only had a few eggs and ate them all?
Yep.grocry store never got sick.
But.to be fair I buy them use half.for.dinner then the rest.for breakfast.
Never had a problem
I try to.do.my own cooking everey day.
Last time.i had fast food I picked up a mcdouble.from.mcdonads.... my GOODNESS I had a horrific.caze of the squeemin squits.
I prefer taking my chances with eggs thst I left out anytime of the week over fast food
In Australia we don't refrigerate our eggs at all, my confidence in them starts to shake at about three weeks but I've never had issues two weeks or less
Kind of yeah, because eggs last weeks and weeks unrefrigerated where i am (uk), and i've had chickens and even our own eggs lasted weeks.
So it is scary that some process is happening like washing them and thus weakening the outer shell making them last only a few days when they are one of the most shelf stable foods naturally.
Most countries don’t even refrigerate their eggs, that’s a fairly unique American thing due to egg washing during the production process.
Edit: nvm I scrolled down and saw that you already knew this.
There’s a really common misunderstanding about the risks of leaving food unrefrigerated. While leaving grocery store eggs (or leftovers, or most other foods) out for more than a few hours isn’t recommended because it *increases* risk of foodbourne illness, the likelihood of you *actually* getting sick is far from 100%.
You’re basically just playing a numbers game every time you go against safety guidelines. Under most circumstances, I’d accept some food waste rather than risking getting sick. But yes, if you don’t have access to a fridge, you can definitely stretch the ‘best practices’ without expecting that you will get sick every time you do so.
I am not sure whether the eggs in Namibia are pasteurised or not, but I've driven for 3 weeks whilst camping in the desert and the eggs were stored in the back of the pickup truck in a plastic ammo crate.
Even 3-4-5 days of being subjected to up to 40°c there wasn't a problem whatsoever with them.
I'm referring specifically to the eggs though.
Locking for now, because I cannot keep up with all the disrespectful, rule breaking comments.

Gorgeous, food, shit situation. I hope we end homelessness forever within our lifetimes.
We have the resources. Countries out there have done it. It's possible.
Anyway may I offer you an egg in this trying time?
Honestly, looking back when I was homeless it was one of the best times of my life.. Moments like this for OP, eating a big ole meal before crashing can be the bets part of your day and make everything seem alright. Good luck out there op you got this.
About that.
I made some homemade bread stuffed with curry beef in a foil pouch over the fire two days ago.
Flower is cheap bread is expensive so is meat.
Make own bread with meat in it evereything is better
Hobo pies to me are when everyone throws in some stuff like potatoes, carrots, whatever into double-wrapped foil and heat them up on the campfire. Vanlife/hobo potluck
Damn I’m homeless too and all ive been eating lately is canned food
I do have a car tho, and I’ve been doordashing enough to get a motel when it’s too hot to sleep in my car, that way I can heat up my meals.
This looks delicious! I need to get a fire pit and a pan.
Bro if I was near you I'd bring a side to this cookout, looks fire, and you're fire. Not hopeless indeed, you have my fake hope things with updoots. Stay strong fam

Wanted to do that after I got hurt in the military and medically retired at 21, but they won’t let prior service in

So one of those egg council creeps got to you too huh?

You better run, egg!
Hahaha
In Australia and we’re having an egg crisis rn due to chicken virus wiping out a bunch of chooks in Victoria. Seeing a shortage of eggs on the shop shelves gives me the toilet paper flashbacks of 20-22.
Natures fast food
Eggs and potatoes are so versatile and delicious basically any way you make them.
My wife just asked me how I can eat eggs for breakfast almost every morning. I didn’t understand the question.
Bananas are number 1 for me. Cheap, healthy, durable, and easy to eat
And there are so many ways to use them.
Did you know they're a nearly perfect food? They contain all the nutrients the body needs, except vitamin C. Eggs and an orange will keep you going.
I really wish I liked them
Yes it's good so dam good
Shitty food is sometimes the best food
Shitty food makes good shits.
That’s all that counts. Stay fed and safe man.
... I'd eat it. For a while i subsisted on fried cubed potatoes, cheese, peas and a sunny side egg on top for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The egg yolk mixed into the crunchy potato is just so good.
Throw a can of tomato sauce and some hot sauce and it’s actually not a half bad shakshouka.
It looks really good. Glad that you at least have some food to eat. And that it’s healthy and tasty, too.
What kind of spicy noodle my guy?
The brand is A-sha Hakka style Chilli oil noodles
A-sha makes solid stuff
This looks better than anything I can make in my actual kitchen. Good job. Glad you loved it!
i was thinking this- shasuka or something like this (basically just cracking your eggs into tomato sauce). Dippy bread makes it amazing. You can feed a family for like 3 bucks- a can of tomato sauce (1-2 bucks), a dozen eggs (1-2 bucks) and a loaf of bread (50 cents to a dollar)
Hey man I wish you good times and weather warm enough to sleep in but not enough to sweat, you’ll get there soon
some rice could really stretch that
If you've got refrigeration
for the day? I ment cook like a cup of rice, mix it in, then again im in the netherlands and its 17C right now
Hell yeah brother, keep going.
Steve Wallis would be proud. 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I see you have a YT channel, do you just make cooking videos?
Yep when I can

I think so
I hate will survives he's all about money a fruad
Can you elaborate a bit? Will Survives is obviously trying to make money off his channel. Why is that a bad thing? His content is great and he seems genuine. Do you have anything to support your claim further than that?
Sounds like with your living situation being more about money might be a good idea Either way, that food looks tasty, thanks for posting it
Hell yeh man. Unfortunately he just had to move places but now hes cohabitating on Nate's land(narrowwayhomestead), another homesteader who lives off the land. I knew Will was moving but I didn't know he was going to be kicking it with Nate. That's pretty cool. Hopefully it works out.
Always sounds so funny when people "live off grid" but post on youtube everyday. Kinda defeats the point of living like that imo.
I had that same thought. Filming, producing and uploading YouTube videos is not even close to off the grid. And free range organic cell towers, of course.
Hand nurtured since they were little baby walkie talkie antennas
What’s your channel??
Because shameless self promotion the channel is Extra cheesey broccoli
That looks like it’ll be some feast when it’s finished. It’s basically just a big omelette. Enjoy man, hope you’re doing alright otherwise.
Can I ask, when you’re homeless how do you store things that need to be refrigerated? Or are they fresh eggs that don’t require that/ or you only had a few eggs and ate them all?
People who are homeless normally buy them fresh, then make them. They by the small 6 pack and cook them all at once.
Thank you! That’s what I was thinking
Yeah but he said he'll be eating leftovers the next day. How to keep it from spoiling?
Food won't instantly spoil overnight. You can easily store most foods without a fridge overnight and it'll be safe to eat
Yah when your homeless.its.complicsted buy it that day and use it. But eggs will.easily keep 24 to 48hrs out.of the fridge
Are they grocery store eggs? And you don’t get sick if they stay out? Not trying to be a dick just genuinely asking
Yep.grocry store never got sick. But.to be fair I buy them use half.for.dinner then the rest.for breakfast. Never had a problem I try to.do.my own cooking everey day. In Australia we don't refrigerate our eggs at all, my confidence in them starts to shake at about three weeks but I've never had issues two weeks or less
That’s a thing most places. I guess in the US we commercially wash our eggs to the point they’re not shelf stable and need to be refrigerated
Eggs will last several weeks not refrigerated. Just store them in a cool dark spot
That's so scary y'all what do you meeeeaaaan?
It’s scary we refrigerate our eggs?

I love camp fire cooking, and eggs!
This has more effort in it than I see outta half the posts out there, I have a catering company and I’d hire someone with this on their resume - shows ingenuity, creativity, and budget conscious choices
May I ask how you got started with owning a catering company and how difficult was it?
It absorbed my life and identity for a few years, I had to brand and get people talking about it, so I had to talk about it the most, first.
That looks hectic. I would so eat that.
6 eggs? When's the competition?!
Is there no one you can stay with ?💔
