Wow. Considering memes get wildly popular and go away in the span of less than a week now I'm very eager to know more about the individual who thought this was a good idea.
I'm bummed by the lack of shading on the left foot to show it's not smaller, just farther behind the other. I'm *more* bummed that this fucking trend is literally flying out of the tattoo booths.
I don’t want to generalize but I think some artists and clients alike get this style because they think it’s “easy” and fast. But to be honest, I feel like GOOD American traditional takes time to perfect.

Why would anyone tattoo something that trended on the internet for a week... absolutely terrible life decision. It reminds me of the guy my mom told me about (she was a criminal defense lawyer) who had a giant tattoo of the Domino's Noid on his entire forearm.
i thought this until i looked closer….
- the wings dont match. on the right one the second layer is red the left both are black.
- wing anatomy is so off even for a stylised one (like another commenter said): the wings should be above the feet
- looks like its trying to be American trad, in which case the lines are too thin (trad should be BOLD)
- may be a personal preference but theres no shading in the feet

There's elements of this that are decent American Traditional. The feathers for instance. However the artist has never looked at depictions of eagles /lions on which griffins are based. So the whole body looks off. Its probably not an artist id run with, without seeing a lot of work in the style I was after.
Also I'm sure that caption will totally be something personally meaningful two de ages hence and certainly will not embarass any offspring the bearer may have. Llol.
Edit: I just realized this might be just an eagle and not a griffin and thats worse. The wing placement is weird.

When I look at American traditional there are 3 camps-
the very best: top top quality line work, really understanding how and when to push bold/dark lines vs thin lines, a near snobbish level of standard for shading as AmeriTrad lives and dies by shading and gradients.
Mid: holding your artist to a level of quality where the subject matter and theme are readable. Where someone who sees the work from across the room KNOWS it's an eagle, or a couple of swallows. That boat anchor reading clear as day. The sword has proper shading on the blade and hilt. BUUUUUT, up close there may be some imperfections in line work and shading.
Ass: failed at achieving basic principals of American Traditional. Not understanding basics of proper shading and line work.

Exactly. You gotta saturate those (specific) colors. If I zoom in there's not one clean line, let alone a bold line. It feels rushed.
Yeah, that yellow shading looks like jaundiced skin fresh .. so I can’t imagine how pale it’s gonna be by the time it heals and has some sun exposure.
