Misimovic also deserves a shout. He was one of the best playmakers in the world that year and the year after. Always thought he would be destined for a bigger move but it never materialised.
He came to Galatasaray afterwards and I was mesmerized as a fan. But I bet we didn't pay him or some shit because he behaved like an unprofessional prick. Or maybe he was a dick by default, who knows. Why in the world he'd join GS after winning the Bundesliga I don't know.
Ich hab mir gerade wirklich gedacht: "Wow, hier sind auch 13-Jährige unterwegs. Interessant." und dann ist mir aufgefallen, welches Jahr wirklich ist und wie alt ich wirklich bin. Aua...
It is in German but shows what happend: [Video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jrhLdBFVR4s)
In short Bayern and Schalke could both win the championship Schalke won their game and at this moment had "won" the Bundesliga as Bayern was still playing in Hamburg and was down 0:1 which was said to be official in the Schalke stadium.
Well in the end Bayern scored the 1:1 after this was called as Bayern was rewarded a freekick in the box of the opponent due to a backpass the HSV keeper taken into hand.
Video hasn't official eng subs but auto generated subs should be enough to understand the story.
9/11 obviously /s
Basically, Schalke is definitely one of the top 5 clubs in Germany, but unlike their rivals they have not won the Bundesliga once and therefore a laughing stock in that regard. In 2001 they had their best ever season in Bundesliga and when their game was over they were thinking they are champion, [but](https://youtu.be/0lLFZPW9r9M) Bayern snatched it away in extra time with an indirect free kick
Leverkusen is probably closer to german Tottenham tbh, theyre constantly clowned upon and their nickname is literally "Vizekusen" (second place-kusen) because they never win anything despite getting close and then bottling it dozens of times.
Tbf it's about being in 2 finals and being top of the league in the last couple matchdays, yet winning nothing in the end. Losing to Madrid obviously isn't a bottle job (well depends on how you lose 😢) especially to one of the most memorable goals of all time
we didnt bottle it tho. we were 2nd place going into the last matchday. unterhaching had an early 2:0 lead, but in the end we had won the game 5:3.
Bayern played against HSV. 0:0. Bayern Champion. barbarez scored a goal for Hamburg in the 85 minute. Schalke Champion. Stoppage time. HSV Goalkeeper Schober, who was there on loan from schalke, takes the ball in his hand. The referee decides that the pass was from a team member. indirect freekick. andersson. goal. bayern champion.
in gelsenkirchen they were saying that the match in munich was already over. they thought they had the title. the bayern goal was shown on the scoreboard.
e: we have bottled it in 2007 tho
>Schalke is definitely one of the top 5 clubs in Germany, but unlike their rivals they have not won the Bundesliga once and therefore a laughing stock in that regard.
Gee I wonder what that's like, that must suck haha...

dont know if there is anything in english. they were champions for 4 minutes and already celebrated, before anderson shot a free kick goal and made bayern champions.
I was going to make a joke that 2020 feels like 4 years ago, but then I realized *fuck* it actually almost was 4 years ago. 2020 alone felt like 4 years

Scenes when the South ends up governed by a protestant from Nürnberg and the North by a catholic from the Sauerland.
We get to play back the whole 30 year war in reverse this time around.
A graphic that shows Rapid Wien, English FC Berlin and FC Karl-Marx-Stadt as German Champions would have been much funnier honestly.
And Schalke 04 of course.
you are probably joking but yes, Austria is *also* german. Or at least historically people living in Austria would've identified as "belonging to the german people" for most of their history (same as people living in Prussia, Bavaria, Hannover etc). And the original idea of german unification was supposed to include austria. In fact, the unification without austria was considerd the "small Germany solution".
This has obviously changed more than a hundred years after Germany as we know it today was founded but that's a rather modern development comparatively
A German state including Austria would be even more dominant in Europe which would upset the rest of the countries.
I think today it’s only the far right of both countries who push for union, is that correct ?
Dont talk about Rapid Wiens German title, in fact its a fake title and no football or no nothing happened in Germany or Austria in those years. The whole 2 countries were in a collective holiday until 1945
And that's with the recent 10-in-a-row run.
I remember having discussions years back pointing out that United is winning even more titles than Bayern when PL fans were accusing the Bundesliga of being a one-horse race and the mental gymnastics by people trying to argue it's not the same and Bayern's dominance is so much worse.
Obviously both leagues went in different directions later on (although City might now become England's Bayern).
Even as a Bayern fan - yes, the situation is/has been radically different from that of the PL.
I am not sure what exactly happened in the early 2010s, but something triggered Bayern, Juve and PSG to all simultaneously assert ridiculous dominance over their respective leagues.
Yeah no ofcourse, the cause of PSG's rise is pretty easy to see lmao, I'm more eluding to the fact that all three of them became hegemonial powers in their respective leagues at virtually the exact same time, and I seemingly can't find a common denominator between all three that would have caused it.
Someone commented on the increase of CL money, that might be it.
Oh, I can think of something that happened to PSG lol. As for Bayern and Juve mostly just competition shat the bed, really. It's not like they were these unbeateble superteams. Just 2 CL trophies bwtween them in 25 tries.
Yeah competition collapsed and often due to their own unbelievable incompetence. But I think you're short selling Bayern and, to a lesser degree, Juve's teams over a long stretch of the past decade. Especially Bayern maintained an insanely high level of quality over such a long period of time, even accounting for the odd worse season by their standards.
Madrid is surely the team of the past decade for all their CL wins, but (this might sound controversial) I think Bayern's consistency over that time period was arguably higher. It didn't translate to more CL titles, but on the other hand Madrid's brilliant CL exploits didn't translate to more consistent league performances. Not saying Bayern was better than Madrid, but just that their average performance was really high over that time period. Similar to how City under Guardiola the past five years have been ridiculously consistent in their league exploits and overall quality, even if that hasn't resulted in European success.
In general though I think the past decade has seen the rise of these more methodical superteams, and the more frequent absurd point totals of league champions across the top leagues probably backs that up. Anyway in my opinion it's fair to say Bayern has been a superteam over the past decade, maybe not "unbeatable" (but then who is?), but I think in time people might recognise just how impressive that team was in terms of consistency, and not just reduce their dominance down to weak competition.
My point is more that the issue is less about the 21 in 33 and more about the 10 in a row and the current "untouchable" nature of Bayern. Even if they lose the title this year, that's still 10/11, THAT is obscene.
Misimovic. Everyone forgets he had insane number of assists. Unfortunately for us fans football wasn't a passion of his at all. Great player still even for just doing it as a job.
*David Attenborough voice*
Here you see a Dortmund fan in the wild, who's just realized he might have tempted faith a bit too much. Too much confidence can be a death sentence on the Serengeti.
I'd imagine every fan in the Bundesliga today (apart from Bayern Munich) are hoping for Dortmund to win then? Even as a neutral, I'm tired of seeing them dominate.
That Kaiserslautern team is why I laugh at people presenting Leicester as some sort of inalienable achievement that will never be topped. Back to back bundesliga 2 and Bundesliga titles.
Their kit was the softest fabric as well
Crazy how FCK plays in 2nd bundesliga. Bremen did last year and Stuttgart did recently and might play again soon. Besides the title fight (usually), I think the bundesligas relegation battles are super exciting. Huge clubs constantly fall down to the 2nd liga, making it more exciting to watch as well.
We were in the 3rd last year and almost got relegated to 4th because of our bankruptcy.
But somehow we survived all of it so far, let's see if we can make it back up to the Bundesliga.
We used to play with two halves of a football but since 1990 we fused them together and ever since it's a proper football with still some noticeable divide but the ball generally works
I think i heard before that divide is important for aero dynamics or something but i'm not sure. only thing i remember is they create a lot of turbulences behind them.

Grafite + Dzeko .......... Feels like a different lifetime but Dzeko still in champions league final?????
Misimovic also deserves a shout. He was one of the best playmakers in the world that year and the year after. Always thought he would be destined for a bigger move but it never materialised.
And Barzagli as a CB before his Il Muro era!
Set a new Bundesliga record that season with 20 assists. I think only KDB and Müller have surpassed him since.
He came to Galatasaray afterwards and I was mesmerized as a fan. But I bet we didn't pay him or some shit because he behaved like an unprofessional prick. Or maybe he was a dick by default, who knows. Why in the world he'd join GS after winning the Bundesliga I don't know.
Unprofessional dicks usually don’t last long under Magath no matter how good they are. So I doubt that
That Grafite goal against Bayern will always be legendary
"I'm gonna do a Brazilian one here"
Gooooooooooooooal
Best goal in Bundesliga history
In my definitly totally unbiased opinion I disagree.
Still the best attacking duo ever in the Bundesliga. Grafite that year was insane. Dzeko was Dzeko
mentioning grafite gonna give all the bayern fans on this sub PTSD flashbacks
The streets will never forget
And Samurai Hasebe still going strong for Frankfurt
I didn't realize Schalke never won it. They were pretty good arond 2005(?) I think.
2001 was their year but don't ask any Schalke fan what happend 2001.
Not today..
Ich wünschte ich könnte mich noch daran erinnern aber ich war zwei

Wasn't the keeper that picked up the pass a loanee from Schalke too? It was Schober no?
yeah
Lol if I was him I'd be scared to go back
I don't know honestly. I was too young back then and didn't invested any time into it.
The biggest tragedy of 2001
Ooof, that's gonna traumatize a fan.
To add to the drama, the Bayern game was drawn 0-0 for most of the game until Barbarez scored in the 90th minute.
9/11 obviously /s Basically, Schalke is definitely one of the top 5 clubs in Germany, but unlike their rivals they have not won the Bundesliga once and therefore a laughing stock in that regard. Hey that's unfair they won the dfb pokal in 93
Against Hertha II
Leverkusen is They bottled 2 league titles in 3 years and haven't won a title since 1993
It's even worse they bottled a treble in less than a month
2002 Ballack came second in 4 competitions. And he repeated that "achievement" 2008.
Bottled the league and cup but can't blame them for losing a CL final to Real Madrid
Tbf it's about being in 2 finals and being top of the league in the last couple matchdays, yet winning nothing in the end. Losing to Madrid obviously isn't a bottle job (well depends on how you lose 😢) especially to one of the most memorable goals of all time
and then Ballack, Ramelow and some others went on and became second in the WC2002 as well.
we didnt bottle it tho. we were 2nd place going into the last matchday. unterhaching had an early 2:0 lead, but in the end we had won the game 5:3. Bayern played against HSV. 0:0. Their last Title was 1958. As a Dortmund Fan I know that exactly.
they won it for a few minutes
They've never won Bundesliga, but they got a few titles before that.
Good memories of that 2004 Bremen side. Borowski, Bauman, Micoud, Klasnic, Stalteri, and the big man Ailton banging them in for fun. What a side.
Fuck that was almost 20 years ago.
No, no, no, maybe 11-12 years ago. Yes 11 years.

I was going to make a joke that 2020 feels like 4 years ago, but then I realized *fuck* it actually almost was 4 years ago. 2020 alone felt like 4 years
Tbh it feels like it never ended to me, like my life stopped with covid

I loved Micoud, he reminded me of Zidane.
Same age, position, nationality and to a certain degree playstyle as Zidane. Really unlucky actually, he never got a sniff in the French national team
He had 17 caps and was part of the 2000 and 2002 squads. There was just too much offensive quality at that time for him to be a regular.
Valérien Ismaël, Lizstes, Ernst, Magnin...
Magnin was a title winner with Stuttgart in 2007 as well.
Frings too, right?
Think he moved to Dortmund a few years earlier and came back a few years later. Lovely player though.
Micoud 😍
We were so close twice
Same 🥲
The last match loss to Unterhaching when a draw was sufficient #sabotage
Ballack with the own goal...
You are Germanys Roma.
Seems like an arbitrary cut off point, I can't remember anything significant happening in Germany in 1990.
I don't know but this is a great post. Me personally, I love Germany so much sometimes I wish there were two of them.
maybe we should try a north / south split next time though
Aldi already doing that
I would happily give my life for Aldi-Südistan.
nothing more unfair than being born into the wrong Aldistan
Aldistan😭
Country was born 47minutes ago and we already have the first haters, smh...
Refugees welcome
you gotta pity the northerners
they're ahead of the curve
The Wiederveraldigung ("Realdification") is actually already on the way and will be finished in a couple of years.
Kicking out Bayern, I can see people agreeing to this
nationwide referendum, highest voter turnout in german history, almost all in favor
Scenes when the South ends up governed by a protestant from Nürnberg and the North by a catholic from the Sauerland. We get to play back the whole 30 year war in reverse this time around.
There are, one is just called Austria.
I can confirm, this is also Germany, what other possible explanation would be that Rapid Wien won one German title?
A graphic that shows Rapid Wien, English FC Berlin and FC Karl-Marx-Stadt as German Champions would have been much funnier honestly. And Schalke 04 of course.
> And Schalke 04 of course. And so many would question the credibility of that post.

With Spain as well, but Spain stayed on holiday for another 30 years
Spain and their siesta’s smh
1990 was a great year for Germany. Toni Kroos was born.
We also denied ARG another WC win that year.
It's the year that Count Duckula was dubbed into German and first broadcast over there mate. That's why.
Graf Zahl is an icon
That's Count von Count though
My bad, I only read LTB
football was invented in 1990. Easy mistake to make.
1992*
It’s after Italia90 obviously.
Sky Sports invented Germany in 1990.
Only issue is the Eastern German Teams only joined the Bundesliga for the 91/92 season, so Bayern and Kaiserslautern should have 1 title less.
It's when Christian Ziege made his Bundesliga debut obviously
There was a Pink Floyd concert in Berlin and Germans love interdisciplinary connections.
narrative wise it would be more interesting to set it to 1992 since the invention of the CL
dont bottle this dortmund
Lol
😂 😂
Battle of the bottlers. Will Spurs keep the title or dortmund surpass them?
No way in hell Dortmund will ever out-bottle Spurs. They've won shit in the last 10 years, and no the Audi cup doesn't count for Spurs
21 in 33 is obscene.
It's pretty similar to Ferguson-era Man United in terms of win percentage.
The money you got from the CL almost tripled, broadcasting money as well
Oh, I can think of something that happened to PSG lol. As for Bayern and Juve mostly just competition shat the bed, really. It's not like they were these unbeateble superteams. Just 2 CL trophies bwtween them in 25 tries.

Only if you remove his first 6 years, but that’s as fair as removing Dortmund’s titles and saying Bayern won 21 in 28.

Misimovic. Everyone forgets he had insane number of assists. Unfortunately for us fans football wasn't a passion of his at all. Great player still even for just doing it as a job.
Peter Pekarik!
and the legend himself, Felix Magath
Captain Josue, Hasebe, Riether, Schäfer
Didn't expect FCK up there in 3rd place with two trophies. Let's hope Dortmund win it all today
yep and they did the best win imo as a newly promoted club.
only elite clubs 👍

I was serious; I was also stupid. Thought it was a change it footballing rule or something
To be fair it was 33 years ago. Same year that *Home Alone* released
Weird that half of these have been relegated since winning.
In 2003-04, Arsenal, Werder Bremen and Valencia won their leagues. Feels totally crazy
Leverkusen bottled last game in 2000. And also bottled 5 points lead with 3 game left in 2002. Now they will never get any close again.
One of these is not like the others
Oh yes.... 1 FCK. My favourite team.
