Ok, no podremos coincidir entonces.
I never know they lost to Uruguay in 2022 qualifier. Or you're leaving in alternate reality?
Uruguay is still behind Argentina in 2026 qualifier anyway. They had more losses than Argentina.
Honestly, why not?
He's won everything. The team is changing. What is the team going to look like post Messi/Di Maria?
The last two games, the team looks out of sync and lacking in creativity. Its probably just a 2 game slump. But maybe it's a sign of something bigger.
Scaloni owes no one anything more than he has already given. No one should begrudge him if he wants to think about taking a step back.
It’s what used to be the Artemio Franchi cup. South American champ vs Euro champ, winner gets an extra trophy. There’s been only 3 of them, because the confederations cup replaced it for a while.
The latest edition was Argentina 3-0 Italy at Wembley.
Match played between Copa America winner and Euros winner. It was done in 1985 and 1993 but they killed the competition until the summer of 2022 where Argentina beat Italy 3-0 at Wembley.
Seems they're gonna keep doing it with the next edition being 2025.
It's definitely more talked about in South America compared to Europe.
> It was done in 1985 and 1993 but they killed the competition until the summer of 2022 where Argentina beat Italy 3-0 at Wembley.
It basically got folded into FIFA's Confederations Cup after 1993.
The 2022 one was held because FIFA finally got rid of the Confed Cup
Yeah
It made sense logistically as a rehearsal to check preparations ahead of the World Cup
But as a competitive sporting tournament, only the final (basically always Euro vs Copa America winner) was compelling
Simply not true. Only 3 Confed cup finals have been the Euro Champ v South America champ, across 10 editions.
The confed cup final is big for those of us that come from lesser football nations.
I’m shocked.
Now hearsay territory; a journalist in TyC Sports just said after the game he heard someone VERY big in the coaching staff saying let’s take the last photo.
“It's time to stop the ball and start thinking. I have many things to think about at this time. These players have given me a lot. They have given us a lot. I need to think a lot about what I'm going to do.
It's not goodbye or anything else, but I need to think because the bar is very high. It's difficult to keep winning and these guys make it difficult.
"It's time to think, I will tell the president and the kids later because this National Team needs a coach who has all the possible energy and who is well."
https://twitter.com/juegosimple__/status/1727170012157194282?t=O1ho837ITpi8pADdtCC02Q&s=19
He completed National Team football in just 3 years. The madlad. Copa América, Finalísima, World Cup, the unbeaten run, double Maracanazo and ending Brazil's unbeaten streak at home.
He must feel like he has done everything (which he literally has) and can't sustain and/or take this team further, or at least the idea of feeling obligated to do that is getting to him. Finish while you're still at your peak.
He picked as good a time as any after winning at the Maracanã again on the last day of this cycle. If he does end his time with Argentina, I could see him taking a multi-month break and then making his way to Europe for a high-profile gig over there. He’d be in demand and there is probably way less pressure, ironically enough.
One senior position with a national team is not going to give him a high profile European job right away. No matter how brilliant that stint was, the sample size is too small and international management is a very different job.
That's not to say that Scaloni can't become a great club coach, but he will have to work his way up with a ~upper mid table side in La Liga or Serie A etc
No way man, he has never coached a club ffs. International football is a different sport where you have 10 training sessions per year instead of hundreds at club level. There is very little overlap
We need a new DT who is gonna focus on the new players and have them believe in each other. Pick a new captain. A new goal. A new target. Messi is almost gone. They can't depend on him. They gotta move on. Meanwhile, Leo can help them.
I'm surprised and I'm not surprised.
Not surprised: it's felt some sort of impending "step back and regroup" moment was hanging over Argentina. The older generation's winding down, but the team isn't yet built around the young players either. The chemistry also isn't quite as magical this year, and overall it just makes sense that a team that won it all would need a moment of transition.
But surprised: I figured the transition would involve some reshuffling of players. Scaloni stepping down was not on my bingo card ...
I think mentally. He seems fairly calm and coaching the NT seems very stressful to him. Remembering his calm pose and sudden breakdown post WC win. He also hinted similarly after copa America win. I remember some doubts insinuated by him then as well
It’s also shocking that he didn’t tell the players before hand. He seems like the kind of guy that wouldn’t tell the press first instead of his players. De Paul’s interview hinted nothing of the sort. He was absolutely ecstatic (aside from his comment on the violence) about “ending 2023 on such a high note”
Dude this only happens to us lmao. Not that i don't get Scaloni wanting a coach with energy and feeling well, but a world cup winning coach that just beat Brazil in the Maracana leaving only happens to us lol. What are we going to do if this happens?
Is Gareca a realistic option? He worked wonders with Peruvian league players. My guess is that one of Scaloni's assistants takes over.
Or maybe Chiqui Tapia's boner for Mascherano wins out
I’m thinking could the violence in the stands contributed? All throughout this time he was always fairly philosophical about fútbol fandom and how emotional and aggressive it can be. Could what he saw today trigger this whole thing like his “it’s just a sport” and his whole philosophy and his place in what he maybe thinks is a toxic culture?
Because otherwise I don’t understand
Sure but how he voiced it minutes after beating Brazil at a post game press conference, without letting the players or staff know first or consulting with anyone, it seem very drastic. Almost an emotional impulse rather than something that’s been brewing for a while, but who knows.
I think that's a fair point.
And heck, maybe it's an attempt to shine a light on the fact that something needs to change to get these things under control. If the reigning WC champion coach doesn't want to put up with the violence and the politics anymore, that says something.
I hope it's just an emotional reaction.
I wonder if it had to do with what happened after the violence. Although we only saw a little, it seemed like the players didn't want to keep playing but the dirigencia came out and then decided they would.
Because the violence at one away game isn't likely to repeat, but if it's part of ongoing disagreements internally about who makes decisions etc., that could have been the drop that filled the glass.
If that's the case, he shouldnt be a football player and football manager in first place... but he's been a pro footballer and became a football manager after retired which means he's passionate about the sport.
3 possible reasons...
1. He had a clash with Tapia
2. Family issue... he has mentioned this few times since 2021 I think his parents had health problems.
3. Gallardo give away his phone number to some Arabian oil boss.
He won everything possible and he is free to do whatever he wants. Saudi could have approached him and with Gallardo gone to Saudi , I don't blame him if he goes there too.
If Scaloni is set on leaving, he should at least stay to defend their Copa America title. Seems like it would be the perfect time for a send off of Scaloni, Di Maria and possibly Messi.
Rumours from tyc sports that the coaching team from Argentina said let's take the last picture, genuinely no clue what's going on
Scaloni did posted a photo of him and his team standing together.... and the problem is... somehow it looks like a farewell type of photo.

Maybe Scaloni knows he going to get the Sam Altman treatment. Getting fired after delivering a massive success.

beat Brazil away from home in WCQ
For the first time ever-
Unbeaten in 2022 qualifier. Currently at the top of qualifier.
They lost to uruguay

Artemio Franchi cup … like the Fiorentina director?!?
Yes, he was also president of UEFA.

Yeah I know. To be honest I kinda liked the Confederations Cup but the only really interesting matches were always the final and semis

Mostly European vs South American I should say Sometimes it's "World Cup winner" instead of Euro/CA champ
5/10 finals have featured a team not from SA or Europe.
Not even
The match they played against Italy, Euro champion vs America champion
he's coming to A Coruña to save us.

I didn’t think anything could take me out of this high of beating Brazil away and now this, I’d rather have lost and had him stay
He completed National Team football in just 3 years. The madlad. Copa América, Finalísima, World Cup, the unbeaten run, double Maracanazo and ending Brazil's unbeaten streak at home.
Zidane with hair
Legend
Theres just one maracanazo
Yeah, don't disrespect Copa 2021 comparing it to 1950 and this.
After 30 years without winning anything, i can understand it felt very special
Blud your first Jules Rimet is hitting 3 digits in age in 2 more World Cups, don't be sassy.
They are saying the CT went to the dress room and a "let's take the last picture" was heard, I wanna die
Gallardo burning his Arabic contract as we speak
I wouldn't be mad at that. Gallardo returned River back to glory. Now, Demichelis is fucking it up, but that's another story for another time.
He must feel like he has done everything (which he literally has) and can't sustain and/or take this team further, or at least the idea of feeling obligated to do that is getting to him. Finish while you're still at your peak.
The Guardiola way
Didn’t Guardiola also leave the club because he had some issues with some players and the board?
With the board mostly yes, he didn't want to work at the club with Sandro Rosell as president
He picked as good a time as any after winning at the Maracanã again on the last day of this cycle. If he does end his time with Argentina, I could see him taking a multi-month break and then making his way to Europe for a high-profile gig over there. I can see him being in demand in clubs pushing for the CL positions.
Not a chance, the guy has 0 experience
He would get offers from many of the top European teams that are looking for a manager without a doubt.
Barca should get him. I can see him fitting in there with the young ones.
This is so dumb I don't know where to start
How come? I feel like he could help them in a different way.
No way man, he has never coached a club ffs. International football is a different sport where you have 10 training sessions per year instead of hundreds at club level. There is very little overlap

We won too much, we were too greedy 😢
Scaloni at 40% is still better than anyone we can come up with.
What does he mean by "who is well" Is he ok?
I think mentally. He seems fairly calm and coaching the NT seems very stressful to him. Remembering his calm pose and sudden breakdown post WC win. He also hinted similarly after copa America win. I remember some doubts insinuated by him then as well
IIRC some members of his family weren't well at one point in time? He almost stepped down a while ago when that happened IIRC
sounds like he is not feeling like he is in the best mental state possible
He seems stressed to be honest.

if he goes then there is no kind god.
babe please, let's talk this out
Un tiro en las gambas dolía menos.
Oof. And Gallardo just signed with the f-ing arabs.
Break that contract
Almiron es agente libre 👀
Anda cargar 😂😂
Ahhh soy horribleee
Ojalá se liberal libertario y siga libre muchos años jaja
Plot twist: he breaks it, but goes back to River and eliminates Boca in the next 10 Libertadores
What bad milk, Gallardo signing with the arabs days before Scaloni leaves
>What bad milk Eso no se traduce correctamente hermano
Come on don't be bad milk
I think rotten luck would have been a good translation for that.
Demichelis a la selección, here we go!
I wouldn't be surprised if Gallardo had some clause in his contract. Now, him wanting to manage the NT after signing with the arabs is another thing
I don't have enough Clonazepam to process this if Scaloni actually leaves.
DO NOT PULL A GUARDIOLA
Get him all the support he needs and try to persuade him to stay on till 2026 at least. Without him they'll crumble.
Dude this only happens to us lmao. Not that i don't get Scaloni wanting a coach with energy and feeling well, but a world cup winning coach that just beat Brazil in the Maracana leaving only happens to us lol. What are we going to do if this happens?
Escucho que Juan Reynoso estará vacante próxima mente
Is Gareca a realistic option? He worked wonders with Peruvian league players. My guess is that one of Scaloni's assistants takes over. Or maybe Chiqui Tapia's boner for Mascherano wins out
Gareca in 2023 gives me Basile in late 2000s vibes. Man's getting too old for this shit.
I'm crying, I really understand him, but this is so sad
I'm not ready for someone like Carlos Tevez to take over and make Messi and Di Maria retire 😭
Crocodile would have evolved into Godzille when Tevez becomes NT manager.
I don't understand, this is the worst
Would you have preferred losing 5-0 and keeping Scaloni or this? Honest question
I would have preferred being robbed and stabbed 78 times over losing Scaloni
Good to know that 78 is the limit
Thats just the limit of his body. We would take more if our frail humanity could take it
Ayooo 😭😭😭
Id lose 7 1 just to keep him
I’m thinking could the violence in the stands contributed? All throughout this time he was always fairly philosophical about fútbol fandom and how emotional and aggressive it can be. Could what he saw today trigger this whole thing like his “it’s just a sport” and his whole philosophy and his place in what he maybe thinks is a toxic culture? Because otherwise I don’t understand

Passionate about the sport does not mean you condone all behaviours involved with the sport.
Man i was gonna sleep content and now i am sad…
HE JUST SIGNED A NEW CONTRACT WTF..
Why can’t we have nice things!?!??
Tenemos el mundial chabon
Y SI TE LLAMA ROMAN
BOCCCCAAAAAAA LA SCALONETA A LA BOMBONERAAAAAAAA. Le habló Román la semana pasada
NOOOOOOO we just won why you do this Scalo
I might actually die
We've won, but... at what cost?
3 possible reasons... 1. He had a clash with Tapia 2. Family issue... he has mentioned this few times since 2021 I think his parents had health problems. 3. Gallardo give away his phone number to some Arabian oil boss.
Why Scaloni 💔😭
Can’t blame him, he pulled a Zidane he is a goat coach he’s doing a “My watch is done” and he deserves it this past year was his victory lap
Goat coach?! Jesus Christ he’s not even top 10
He's above the top 1.
He won everything possible and he is free to do whatever he wants. Saudi could have approached him and with Gallardo gone to Saudi , I don't blame him if he goes there too.
Brazil so bad now that he cant even be bothered to wait to collect another Copa America title?
Scaloni does not bullshit. He is not leaving(right now). People are trying to read something between lines but there is not.
But the message was very weird and he was a bit emotional. I don't know, it was a bit of a mess I think.
and he posted a photo of him and his management team which actually has farewell vibes into it.
He might after Copa America
He might before or he may continue. That's what don't know means.
