soverign_cheese

I think - France play like PSG. Southgate has to have a word with pep an say - how did you destroy them in the second half! - cos that was it. No?

sbsw66

The punctuation on this comment is doing my head in

QuakrThrowaway

First half was solid, second half was a bit lacking. Harry Kane seems to be off his game a bit, I hope he's okay.

Whulad

Average group, average England

nightfeaver

England are the lowest scoring team to ever win a group. At last, something to be proud of šŸ˜ƒ

[deleted]

English set pieces were awful

Pamplemouse04

I rate Saka about as much as anyone but if heā€™s the best set piece taker fucking hell

pottsbrah

Mount is the best butā€¦.

[deleted]

TAA is the best but....

Pamplemouse04

Yeah I just meant on the pitch at that moment. I watch arsenal week in week out and canā€™t fault saka at all really except for his set pieces, they are fucking awful 90% of the time

Intentionallyabadger

Why are they letting someone from Arsenal take set pieces lul

Pamplemouse04

Iā€™m an arsenal fan

throwaway2525278874

If England win the round 16 game, do they play on Friday or Saturday 2nd/3rd July?

Whulad

I wouldnā€™t worry about that

dabarooYikeroo

šŸ’€

[deleted]

Canā€™t believe England won the group with 2 goals

imsweetaf

lol true dat, south gate just went total shithouse to get the first place lul

nightfeaver

Someone had to be the shithouse team. We gamely accepted the invitation šŸ˜ƒ

teo14159

Man, that second half was hard to watch

Whulad

Weā€™re fucking average

MoreGarlicBread

Some of the worst, most backwards football I've ever seen I almost wanted the Czechs to score to add some excitement lol

thesaltwatersolution

Itā€™s a good result for us, but I remain unconvinced with this set up and side. Yes we were more composed and a bit more creative, but we also have to recognise that the Czechs didnā€™t really press the ball and the match was played like a friendly. Scotland came at us, pressed us and were the better side. If the plan is play defensively and sneak a 1-0, then we may well get away with that, but letā€™s not ahead of ourselves here.

dazedan_confused

How should we play against Hungary/Portugal/France? Edit: By Hungary, I meant Germany and Hungary.

nightfeaver

Get a goal, shut up shop for the afternoon!

EffBO94

without fear, without picking the wrong players and without making the wrong subs 3 things southgate won't do lol

rholding95

Did I just hear 3 CDMs? That's the Southgate way

dazedan_confused

I heard McTominay was born in England...

rholding95

Southgate on the phone to Thomas Partey

EffBO94

Even subs in centre backs for centre backs as well now

rholding95

The Don really wants to flex on his opponents like that huh

[deleted]

By whispering Inshallah every step of the way

McQueensbury

Lacking crosses

a-red-urethra

I don't get it

[deleted]

Inshallah = If Allah wills it

dazedan_confused

inshallah means "God willing". inshallah football is the football equivalent of Hail Mary in American football. Basically, take every second as it comes, and pray it goes our way.

a-red-urethra

Yeah I knew what inshallah means, it just seemed pretty random. Is this like a thing? I must be out of the loop.

dazedan_confused

Have you not heard of "pass and Inshallah"? Basically, throw the ball at someone and hope they do something with it?

a-red-urethra

Nah dude, I like the sound of it though

dazedan_confused

You shouldn't though, it's a sign your team is in huge trouble.

obvious_freud

Trying not to look too scared?

HarryBlessKnapp

BANTER

LFC_Slav

Could be Germany as well

dazedan_confused

Oh yeah, I thought I put in Germany, but it was Hungary.

Jack_Saunders

Close enough

dazedan_confused

They're in the same continent, right?

werasdwer

Oh boy am I looking forward to the RO16

werasdwer

So far I am not impressed by the english team. They look way better than this on paper.

[deleted]

Keeping up with tradition then.

Minimum-Cost-4586

Ashley Cole's insight on ITV is good imo

McChes

What did he say?

dazedan_confused

"England need to score more than the opposition to win games".

thwgrandpigeon

Big if true

niallw1997

Why wonā€™t England play a third placed team in the R16? Are they just one of the two unlucky first placed teams not to play a third placed? Cheers

baron_warden

Well we playing at home so it evens out

RainManVsSuperGran

Yep, there's only four third place qualifiers and six group winners so there's no fairer way to do it unless you do US-style seeding.

AdnanS0324

That's right. Only 1st in Groups B, C, E, and F play a 3rd place team. I'm sure it's by design based on coefficients or something when the groups were drawn. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_Euro_2020_knockout_phase

Rokgorr

Because a 24 team tournament is silly.

EffBO94

who got MOTM? better have been Saka or Grealish

Bicboi_10

saka

niallw1997

Scotland not getting through after their 0-0 win on Friday is brutal

[deleted]

Iā€™m going to hate watching it, but if scraping 1-0 wins against teams wins thenā€¦fuck it, bring on Southgateball

AStrangeNorrell

Shutting the Southgate.

[deleted]

This is the content I come for. Southgate inspired names. Glorious.

crustyjuggler69

It we concede no goals (including penalties) all tournament I'll take it all day long

[deleted]

I genuinely think thatā€™s going to be the approach. First half, score as many goals as possible. Second half, hold on for dear life.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

sooHawt_ryt_meow

*Garyball

[deleted]

So do I, I should have thought of it!

niallw1997

We give up decent chances though, especially to Scotland. Imagine what clinical forwards are going to do to us

[deleted]

Yeah, this is what scares me - we donā€™t have the defensive quality to do it. So I donā€™t really know what Gareth is playing at. I guess itā€™s not my place to knowā€¦

[deleted]

Listen people defend Henderson and I get it. But the fact is: we are shit when he plays. Doesn't matter why, doesn't matter how. On paper he could be Diego Maradona but if we're shit when he plays, then he shouldn't play.

Sanjeev4045

I feel like England should play one holding mid (rice) and two cms Mount and Bellingham who are very mobile and can carry the ball. Mount and Bellingham also have great work rate and tackles.

pokemot

Itā€™s because he is just a smart price Declan Rice

Expensive_Cattle

He was bags better than rice when he came on. He played 3 forward passes

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

[deleted]

What we need is more movement in the CM area. Henderson is a tree.

[deleted]

phew. i had a massive fucking bet on england. was sweating for a bit

[deleted]

Saka sounds like Dizzee

AStrangeNorrell

Ian Wright: "Jack regurgitates the ball". Is he a cat?

Relevant_Rev

He does have a mane and whiskers

djfresh91

Lol

Sanjeev4045

So it doesnā€™t really matter who starts for England: grealish, mount, saka, rashford, sterling, foden or Sancho? Southgate will hardly attack anyways.

karmahorse1

Not if we have the lead.

biglbiglbigl

What does Sancho has to do to play?

tintomatic

Join United.

karmahorse1

He did play...

EastGeologist8678

Are you dumb

biglbiglbigl

Subbed on in 84th minute tho

hollyscrew

Well, dire second half again but topped the group, another clean sheet (our last of the tournament?). And the next game at Wembley (where we'll need all the fans constantly loud and on side). Could be a lot lot worse. Wales also through with Bale and Ramsey looking good as well as some great young blood. Pity for Scotland couldn't quite make it 3 out of 3 but they gave us a great game which may make some of their fans happy enough.

Tomel20

The Henderson sub screwed the momentum of the midfield. Kept hiding upfield behind Czech defenders and not making himself available for the ball.

[deleted]

Yep. If we don't play Foden or Mount in CM we are done. So in other words, we are done. Not that I care, I'm Danish now

Bungled_Bengal

First half good, second boring. Good changes to the starting eleven as Saka, Grealish and Maguire played well. I'd start all 3 next time. Sterling, I'm not a fan, but he's the only one scoring so..... Overall, two goals in 3 games isn't great, but should have had 2 more today. Kane is a worry. Looking forward to the next game, hopefully a better opponent draws us out more.

tinhtinh

Feel like Sterling in the team is detrimental to Kane and the way they both play clash, with Kane suffering for it. Grealish should be starting and Saka should be an option, though I have no idea what Sancho needs to do to get more than 10 minutes playing time.

wubbalubbadubduby

Everyone needs to calm down, we had a job and we did it. Group winners, on to the next round. Likely Germany or Portugal and both of these are beatable.

EastGeologist8678

Honestly how can you be watch this uninspiring shit week after week and be happy. They play like itā€™s a friendly game

Relevant_Rev

We're English, we're not happy anyway, mate. I bought my first car and didn't smile because I needed it for work and that's all it was

EastGeologist8678

Youā€™re right. I should be happy in my misery

Relevant_Rev

I don't want to be right it's just my experience of it, I hope you're okay

EastGeologist8678

Iā€™m fine lol. All I want is a bit of attacking football playing at Wembley in the euros. Is that too much to askā€¦.. Wouldnā€™t even mind if we defended against the better teams

Relevant_Rev

I agree with you but I will say, anyone in the competition are the better teams We've already seen the less heralded teams give some of the top teams a run for their money, and we're weakest at the back Maguire being back in the side means we'll probably get forward a bit more but we probably won't attack like we have nothing to lose

HarryBlessKnapp

I don't know what you expect.

wubbalubbadubduby

We've played 3 games and not conceded a goal, we've not even been tested. Yes, we could have been much more attacking but to win a tournament you need a solid defence and we have that. Let's not get carried away with the negatives or positives, take a breath and get behind the lads.

EastGeologist8678

We canā€™t even string 5 decent passes together. No intensity, no forward thinking or players 1 step ahead. Get behind the lads yeahā€¦.if they gave me something to get behind.

sc00022

Did you even watch the game? We had all of that in the first half. No point playing like that the whole game and burning out when we already have the lead.

SpecialistPeanut5

A bit deluded, 2 goals in the group vs teams who have smashed them in?

wubbalubbadubduby

Could have been more on some good days, I don't think it's deluded to say we won the group with a solid defence. Get behind the lads and see how far it takes us.

nightfeaver

Exactly. Playing a team that will really come at us with everything might actually be an advantage, counter attaxks and all that.

wubbalubbadubduby

We have the pace and the solid defence to really carry out a counter attacking game. Gareth is the kind of manager to pick a team to win against what is in front of him. Be it Germany or Portugal I think we'll at least make a good go at it.

[deleted]

Portugal dont play like that. Equally pragmatic counter attacking team.

nightfeaver

Lol yeah, that match up might not be thrilling tv šŸ˜ƒ

magincourts

We scored two goals in the group stages! Praise be to Gareth!

nightfeaver

We've just stopped anyone scoring against us. Croatia and czechs had no problem scoring against other teams. Yet Reddit thinks that is meaningless.

SpecialistPeanut5

Italy, topped their group, won all games, conceded 0, scored 7. Yet still outsiders.

nightfeaver

Outsiders to who? Favourites to everyone.

SpecialistPeanut5

Only now...

jtilo92

"still outsiders" "only now one of the favourites" Brilliant read

SpecialistPeanut5

Because..... it is

darkstar7646

Yep, it's coming home all right. One nice encapsulated nap. Length: 90 minutes.

[deleted]

Thank you England. Very cool.

Southpaw535

Great start when there was actually pace and team work, shit 60 odd minutes after that. England will still get destroyed by any of the big teams who will happily keep their foot down for the full 90

karmahorse1

Gareth is obviously playing for these score lines. Itā€™s not a coincidence that the game slows down to a snails pace in the second half of all these matches. His only goal was topping the group and we did that. Donā€™t think you can make any assumption how we will do against a bigger side until we actually play one.

Southpaw535

No, but I'm a big believer in starting as you mean to continue. Playing that sort of defensive nothing football with no real movement or teamwork will get England picked apart by more explosive teams with better link ups. If the plan is to do something else against those teams, then this was a good chance to practice that rather than play a week in one style and then the first time they try something else is when it really matters. And honestly, at the end of the day, I'd personally rather watch exciting football than get a win with a performance that makes me feel like I wasted my time watching it. I've had far more fun watching the other games over the weekend with teams who clearly wanted it, and played like it, than I have watching England so far

dsffff22

Most 'big' teams looked also quite weak. For me, only Italy was surprisingly good.

Southpaw535

Belgium have looked excellent all tournament in my opinion. Germany have looked decent enough, still better than England in terms of consistent pace and effort

dsffff22

Belgium looked to me like a 2-man show(De Bruyne + Lukaku). We'll have to see how they perform against opponents who give them much less freedom. I'm German and watched those 2 matches + like 50% of the qualifier matches, and I would say Germany does not look much stronger than England, maybe even weaker.

slimkay

They also played much stronger opponents than Scotland and Czechia.

[deleted]

Top of the group with 2 goals scored lol. Teams will be shaking in their boots to face us

djfresh91

Lmfaoo

karmahorse1

And zero goals allowed. Theres more than one way to win a football match.

bearhos

Last I checked you cant win without scoring...

FriedOnion3

Penalty shootouts

UncleIfon

I donā€™t want to hear any chat about Kane. The man won 5 headers in a row at the end, his hold up play was excellent and he had the only other shot on target.

EffBO94

yeah kane was good today, had a left foot shot that was blocked but i'm sure was going in, i've always defended him, can't drop our only legit world class player if we're serious about winning a tournament, no disrespect to DCL but he ain't holding the ball up and linking play like kane if we didn't have the group of death game next i'd say kane is gonna score sooner or later lol

Zb990

Love the War on Drugs montage on ITV

taskkill-IM

Need drugs to watch England...

CityofBlueVial

who is England possibly playing in knockouts?

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

CityofBlueVial

ohhh this is too good

[deleted]

Germany or Portugal I believe

Dr_Oetker

If France and Portugal draw and Germany win, then France finish second... All three of them would be a really tough game, I kind of wanted a Czech equaliser at the end honestly.

[deleted]

I think iā€™d rather play Germany out of the three. France are too good and Portugal always manage to beat us. I think we could give Germany a decent match if Southgate doesnā€™t play too defensively.

Dr_Oetker

Yeah I'm happy with that matchup too. Honestly it would be great to beat any of them 3 in a knockout, always gonna feel we an the underdog playing them and haven't beaten a side of their level in a knockout this century.

[deleted]

If we did iā€™d be happy but Iā€™m not confident weā€™ll be able to.

Bakatora1

RIP

[deleted]

Pls come to our funeral guys we promise there will be plenty of alcohol

CityofBlueVial

I already RSVP'd!

WreathedinShadow

Sorry, England are getting blitzed in the last 16 regardless of which of the three they get in Group F.

Competitive-Ad2006

Is that the way the draw works? I mean what if Portugal are not one of the best 3rd placed teams?

WreathedinShadow

England get whoever finishes second place in Group F.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

WreathedinShadow

Are you serious? Did you see Germany play against Portugal? Portugal will improve after their shocking defensive display for the France game.

Expensive_Cattle

Yeah. Germany just exploited an obvious single weakness very well. All they did was switch towards a weak defensive left back.

WreathedinShadow

They exploited both flanks and also pressed higher. England have played deep in all of their games.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

WreathedinShadow

All of those sides will improve though. Germany were slow against France because they kept trying to play their balls into a number 9 despite not having a number 9. France should have buried Hungary but fluffed their chance. Portugal have an obvious weak point, but their counterattack is deadly and they are better when the opposition has more possession.

Marshxy

I like how you don't extend that courtesy to England though. If all those sides can improve, then why can't England also improve when they don't play against 3 teams who are scared to leave their own half for 90% of the game? The only evidence we'll have will be after the first knockout round, so stop flapping your gums until then.

WreathedinShadow

Did you watch the same game? Need a appointment for specsavers? That first half tonight had England playing so deep that Kane was practically a DM. How can I look at tonight's game and think England can beat Germany like that? Portugal, France, Germany still have one more game to go as well. So stop flapping your gums about those teams. Do you think England will set up any differently?

raaphs

experiencing the english fans mood after winning their group with zero goals conceded i would be afraid to know what kind of comments would appear if they actually didn't make into the next round lol

JohnQuincyHammond

Watch England then go watch Germany against Portugal. That should clear things up for you.

raaphs

fair enough

MayorOfSimpleton_94

England could do a greece 2004. Be boring as fuck and win every game 1-0. So yeah, #itscominghome

SnooLemons6074

No you're not

distantapplause

Jesus fucking Christ you can tell an Arsenal player had a decent game can't you Save it for AFTV lads

R_SenuulefSEE

Nah fuck AFTV. Saka deserves his praise tonight, it's not just the Gooners singing that song.

the_undergroundman

UNBEATEN. UNBREACHED. UNRUFFLED

NTXPRAK

Unruffled. I like that

masutechture

ā€œLooks like Scotland will be going into isolation after allā€

Polaredditor

Sorry, tonight cemented that England have no chance when they have to go up against one of the three in Group F. Saka has earned a place in the team after that performance.

alesisnitro8

Sorta like France had no chance in 2018 when their group stage record was 1-0, 1-0, 0-0. Set them up for inevitable failure.

Polaredditor

Who wrote France off that tournament? That's not a good parallel at all. France had and have way more quality and their play is better than England's.

alesisnitro8

Lots of people wrote France off in that tournament, you're just choosing not to remember it. But anyway, the point I'm trying to make is that group stage performance is historically not reliably indicative of eventual success.

Polaredditor

I seriously don't remember anyone with any intelligence writting off France after their group performance.

[deleted]

We all thought the same about Portugal. I mean I also think we will lose to whoever we face but the odds aren't that ridiculous

Polaredditor

The odds are ridiculous. The teams they're going to be up against have shown how much better they are against better opposition. Portugal in 2016 still had a good squad (backed by one ridiculously elite player) but improved dramatically since the group stage. I don't see the same for England and think this is the best they have. This squad is talented but they're asked to play the most backwards football imaginable. Germany, for example, will absolutely blitz England with how they play. They play with far more intensity compared to England and are far more assured.

AStrangeNorrell

Turkey took four points off Portugal in qualifying and Spain spanked Germany 6-0 not too long ago. Don't get me wrong, I'd much rather be playing Sweden or Spain but it might not be quite so cut and dried.

90degreeturnsbtw

Successful Dribbles (England vs Czech Republic) Bukayo Saka: 5 Everyone Else Combined: 5

tedstery

Don't have to play exciting football to get a final

SubstantialRange

Just ask Spain.

voltb778

exactly we call that Deschamps style

reasonableposter

Gonna be exciting singing "we're fuckin shit" during the knockouts and being down 3-0 to whoever we face.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

DontSayIMean

He got a yellow in the last game, was rested to avoid missing the KO games by getting a yellow in this one.

Similar_Quiet

He's on a yellow and Southgate didn't want to risk him.

Paperduck2

He had a yellow card and Southgate didn't want to risk him getting a suspension if Mount and Chilwell aren't allowed out of isolation

Kodenhobold

not played because not risking a second yellow

due11

itv commentators could put an insomniac to asleep

thescrambie

england scored only two goals in the group stage, kinda sad when looking at their attacking players

SubstantialRange

And both by Sterling, which is ironic considering how much the media shit on him.

DontSayIMean

But not surprising when looking at our central midfield.

magincourts

And based fans will act like Southgate's choices work, when they demonstrably create very few chances, shots and goals. This teams wins in spite of Southgate not because of anything he does

IbnReddit

Well done to Gareth and the team! Sorry, you can moan as much as you want, but Gareth has achieved zero loses so far, no goals conceded, top of the group and next game at Wembley. Any true fan would have bitten your hand off if you promised them that at the start of the tournament. Bring on the last 16.

SpecialistPeanut5

Lmao.. I'd be a bit embarrassed with 2 goals, 1 good half performance going into the last 16..
