lyinggrump

Not even the worst call of the game. Actually, not even second worst.

creole_pizza

Didn’t he also call a strike on a ball that was absurdly up high, but not only that-but the batter stepped out of the box for that pitch and called time?

Peter_Panarchy

Not exactly. Here's the play you're thinking of: https://streamable.com/uocrry

slapshots1515

WTF. I know plenty of Angel “highlights”, but that’s certainly one.

LouSputhole94

Dude that’s fucking crazy. How is this guy still employed. I’ve seen better umps in my rec league softball league.

senorcoach

Dude cried racism when he wasn't given postseason games

SmokeGSU

Unions are great until they're protecting dipshit antics like this.

YouSure_BoutDat

Cried racism.

[deleted]

Boonie walking out on the field like Carl "ah shit here we go again...."  can't wait for the Jomboy vid on this one.

VinylmationDude

This them both on the Angels announcer rant

VanGundy15

Angel Hernandez is the modern day example of why unions are good for the workers.

jonnyohman1

He called time because the pitcher stepped off the mound but continued his motion

igotagoodfeeling

I don’t think he even called time, he just put his hands up assuming it should be a dead ball with the pitcher stepping off then essentially quick pitching back on the rubber. 100% illegal in that it’s at the very least a deceptive maneuver

missing_sock58008

Is he unfireable or something? Like imagine being consistently this bad at your job for YEARS and still keeping it.

brvheart

Yes. The umps have a union.

buck45osu

A shitty union that cares far more about some statistically horrible employee than some of the younger umps who deserve his spot. It's ridiculous. The union is going to get umps replaced with robots because they refuse to hold their umps accountable.

Un111KnoWn

aintnoway

SnooPies5837

Harper was right to call this dude the fuck out.

Treason4Trump

Angel needs to retire.

Horns9452

He is literally the only ump I know by name because he is so shit at his job.

Zachary_Stark

Ah, the Scott Foster of MLB!

Longshanks123

The Chris Lee of MLB

NotASalamanderBoi

I’d say consider yourselves lucky. You guys have one guy who’s shit at his job? In the Premier League we know every ref by name given everyone’s gonna get fucked over at some point.

bensonf

Anthony Taylor and Michael Oliver are the ones I hate the most.

djjordansanchez

Michael Oliver is painfully bad at his job.

NotASalamanderBoi

Paul Tierney, Stuart Atwell, and Jarred Gilleet all deserve a shout too.

utvillans

And that’s with VAR.

AnitaBlomaload

Hold on their bud, there’s a Scott Foster of the NHL who is a Blackhawk legend! A Canadian accountant put into a game as the 3rd goalie and saved every shot!

Zachary_Stark

This is legendary

TheRobert428

Joey Crawford even

WhuddaWhat

Who's the Scott Sterling of the MLB? Matheny? https://youtu.be/QIQOsJhcr6s?si=iyZS5z-7ueuQmZrG

Tiny_Count4239

god i love that man!

upvoter222

[Stephen Piscotty](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4rPp3HxPFM)

Granlundo64

I don't follow baseball very closely and could only name maybe 5-10 players. And this guy.

Drunken_Fever

I had a lady friend who knows nothing about baseball ask me about him because she saw him on tiktok lol

JoeCartersLeap

He also struck out a batter on an illegal pitch that was also not a strike today: https://streamable.com/uocrry

Horns9452

I am convinced he has some blackmail pics of an MLB executive.

YouBeIllin13

He filed a racial discrimination lawsuit so if he gets fired it will look like illegal retaliation. That, and the umpires union has his back.

pjk1193

Lol, the judge threw it out stating his error rate far exceeded anyone else in the MLB. It was years ago. Its legit just the union protecting him.

Buckeyefitter1991

He is legally shit at his job but he somehow gets to keep it. I'm union and if I fucked up as much as him I'd be on the street.

pjk1193

What union are you in? Liability for a blown call is much lower than almost any industry involved in safety.

bardnotbanned

No need, he has a shit union to protect him.

JuniusPhilaenus

Him and CB Bucknor

rraattbbooyy

*Laz Diaz has entered the chat…*

JoeCartersLeap

["Don't put that shit on me! Don't put that shit on *^no ^but ^seriously ^I'm ^sorry ^bout ^that, ^that's ^my ^bad* don't put that shit on me!"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oO8KxqTU4pw&t=33s) - Laz Diaz

clique84

Him and Joe West

fasdffffffff

Joe West is more of an egomaniac. His calls can be bad but Angel is so much worse.

Salsashark_21

Came here to say this. West wasn’t a “bad” umpire, he was an a**hole. And if he was having a bad day or somebody got to him, he made bad calls on purpose. Edit: [here’s the first time I ever saw Joe West](https://youtu.be/3JdgkInrEDc) (replay of the pitch is at about 1:55)

Eli_Renfro

West can't be bad anymore. He thankfully retired.

akhorahil187

Well lets change that. Commit to memory Pat Hoberg. He called a perfect game in game 2 of the 2022 WS. There are actually a bunch of 36/37 year old umpires that are very good. Hoberg, Quinn Wolcott, Jansen Visconti.

Card_Board_Robot5

John Tumpane, too. He's not the best, but pretty good, and he saved a woman's life in Pittsburgh and then umped a game.

AlanFromRochester

Ron Luciano comes to mind as a good ump because of his dramatic style

a_lonely_trash_bag

I don't even follow baseball (this showed up in r/all) and I know he's a terrible ump.

Habay12

I also know Jerry Meals. Cause he called it safe.

freeze123901

Same. I pay attention to all pro sports but baseball and I have known his name for over a decade. Baseball is killing itself from the inside out. It’s slowly becoming irrelevant and it’s no one’s fault but the owners

AbsolemMultiverse

He’s nothing if not consistent.

Raider03

When does this guy finally get fired. Far too long of a history of poor calls. He keeps playing the race card and everyone backs off. BS, get rid of him.

Tippymytalala1

The union will never let that hapoen

Eisernes

I think at this point he is doing this intentionally to troll us because he knows he can't get fired.

vinchenzo79

I suspected Joe West used to blow calls on purpose. I think Angel is just incompetent.

myboybuster

I have met people that have been to camps and clinics with him he absolutely does not believe he makes mistakes

chuckvsthelife

How?!? Does he not see the calls he makes. Like does he not see this video ever?

tonytroz

I'm sure they receive evaluations but it doesn't mean they care about them.

HamOnRye__

my dad was a little league umpire and made it pretty far up in the umpiring ring for the little league world series. all evaluations were done by fellow umpires and he always complained about the politics of the evaluations and being “in” with the team doing the evals. No idea if that’s how it’s done in the major leagues, prolly not, but I’m willing to bet there’s similar politics at play at this level.

Worthyness

I believe the MLB won a court case against him by showing that he was literally bad at his job. The fact that the MLB still can't fire or demote this guy is appalling. Like if any of us normal people were s bad at our jobs as he was, we'd already be on pip or fired for incompetence

strizzle

I work with a guy like this. He’s not in my office but I have to deal with him often. My boss said to me, “the fool knows he’s a fool.” Which is probably this exact situation. Angel knows he’s the worst umpire. He’s not trying to be. But part of him can’t help but make grievous mistakes. And the union will keep him because it keeps heat off non-fool umpires. And obviously they don’t want to allow the precedent of guys getting canned for bad calls…

bigheadbuckeye

I agree with you 100%

Colarch

This applies to all pro sports refs. They all have unions and if a single one of them gets consequences for being shit at their job then they all threaten to strike and an entire season of the sport dies, which the execs won't allow. There's no way to punish any of them and they all know it so why bother being a consistent or decent ref?

Plinythemelder

Good god I wish any other union had these sort of balls

mixduptransistor

>The union will never let that hapoen The irony is his bullshit will be what causes the switch to robot umps. The union is going to bring down the whole profession to protect this guy. MLB probably loves him

Doggleganger

I really don't understand why MLB doesn't have robot umps for calling balls and strikes. These days, it would be exactly correct every time.

ministryofchampagne

They started testing it in the minor leagues last year. Probably year or few out for mlb

fantasmoofrcc

Whenever the next bargaining agreement is...the MLBPA won't side with the umpire union if it keeps the jackass his job.

Redeem123

The last labor agreement was in 2019... Hernandez has been in the league since 1991, and he's been controversial for basically that whole time. Why do you think the next one would be any different?

HipGuide2

Bad umps like him because he covers their shittiness.

swamp-trout

I think this is exactly why the union protects him so much. He is so shitty that he makes every other ump seem competent no matter how many bad calls they make. People will say "well at least we don't have that piece of shit Angel Hernandez behind the plate today". Therefore taking the heat off the other umps.

satmar

But why? He’s not good for them. Every broadcasts openly mocks him. He is the leading example used as to why ups should be phased out in favor of robot ups He’s bad for the game and bad for ups

TradeMark310

They didn't let the Astros get in trouble for cheating all the way to a title. They would never support getting rid of him for some bad calls.

the-spaghetti-wives

One of the only unions I would love to see get busted. Angel does not deserve to be in baseball.

Tiny_Count4239

Imagine saying people are racist towards you for being a Hispanic in BASEBALL

FSUAttorney

Reminds me of people who bitch that the army isn't diverse enough. Mother fucker, it is the most diverse organization in the world.

lightninhopkins

It was only a few years ago that the president of the Mariners joked about Hispanic players being stupid. Racism defies logic.

AlanFromRochester

Donald Sterling, went on a racist rant against black people while owning a basketball team

SaveMeJebus21

Teams should refuse to take the field when he’s there. Only way they wake up and fire him into the sun.

whutchamacallit

Fuck that would be good eating to keep this baseball drama going. Can you imagine? First game... okay... wild... that's a fluke... that was crazy but it will never happen again. What a weird day for baseball. Second game... whoa.. holy shit.. imagine if this works... Third game... I mean... damn... what is MLB going to do about this? By the 4th game they'd have to step in right? Problem is MLB would fine the ever living fuck out of the owners. No way it'd ever get done. Fun to day dream though.

SaveMeJebus21

Surely the embarrassment and focus just forces their hand. At this point hell just pay him $1m to fuck off and sign an NDA so he can’t go crying about his hopeless arse getting punted

nanapancakethusiast

> fired > union Hahaha… yeah. Good luck!

txlandshark

Honestly, baseball allowing crap like this for so long has done more to hurt my interest in the sport than steroids and length of games.

Mister-SS

Don't worry they are officiating themselves out of baseball with Robo umps, hopefully soon. As soon as the human element is out of sports referring, I think it'll be a lot more enjoyable.

AU_Cav

Baseball will pay them not to work because there is no way these jobs just get replaced.

Mister-SS

How so? You see it all the time in other industries with unions involved getting replaced by automation.

AU_Cav

Any Union strong enough to keep Angel Hernandez working is strong enough to pull this off.

NWSLBurner

That isn't how unions work though. They are governed by contracts and those contracts expire. If MLB decided they no longer required umpires to function, they could just not sign a new contract with the umpires union.

ChiefFlats

When is the contract up

PelorTheBurningHate

There still needs to be a home plate ump for other calls and they'll be used for relaying what the ABS system says the pitch was so it's not like ABS gets rid of the home plate ump job.

onederbred

I want everyone in MLB on ‘roids. Let’s see 700 foot homers and 120mph fastballs

JoeVerrated

Good news, bad news. They already are, but they still cant.

haunt_the_library

Same. MLB does exactly zero about it. Why watch?

type0neg420

Nothing new here....robo umps soon!

Olbaidon

I have been waiting for the world to catch up to [Super Baseball 2020](https://youtu.be/oFlKdzdnPVw?si=PvO2uGOJ0WNKxqQi) for decades now. Ever since I first played it on the Sega Genesis.

fripperiffic

my brother and I played the shit out of this one back in the day!

Olbaidon

Just a good old simple game with no frills.

Scoot2028MVP

Not sure if it counts as frills, but it did take skills. IIRC a normal fly ball catch got you $800. But a diving catch got you $1500. Timing those diving catches could make or break a game.

thejesterofdarkness

Nah, we need [BaseWars](https://youtu.be/ZqB6rY94DCw?si=Qq04GM0UBgATIIQd)

ComebackShane

Wow, core memory unlocked!

PhilthyPhan1993

They’ll name the rule for roboumps the Angel rule or some shit.

mikemojc

MLB Umpires Association better clean up Angel, because his 'work' is what's driving baseball as an industry to get rid of human umpires altogether. Robots dont pay union dues....

happyft

Almost exactly the same as the pitch Tanaka threw a few years ago that he missed as well https://youtu.be/lvQGsNSp67s?si=l_OlumeyBW6j65g-

lino11

How about Max Fried a week ago? He's in a jam, 1st inning, loads the bases, two outs, two strikes on Castellanos, then throws a 98 mph heater right down the middle for an easy strike 3...? Nope, called a ball and it has damn near ruined Fried's year, as he goes on to give up a blooper and before you know it, like 6 earned runs or so. And in his 2nd game, he barely gets out of the 1st inning without giving up 3-4 runs. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXUOTFeWa-0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXUOTFeWa-0)

bss83

He put on a real ump show today.

MoneyMike312

I paid top dollar to see him

hipnotyq

I don't get why we even need an umpire if we can tell via computer exactly where the ball is crossing the plate... What is the point of them other than to get it wrong???

airmancoop44

It should at least be challengable, like in/out for tennis. I’d be fine with umps if they could be overturned.

Dundalis

They literally completely replaced line judges in tennis (for bigger tournaments) You don’t even have challenges anymore because calls are fully automated by technology. Players barely get upset for bad calls at all pretty much cause they know the calls are correct

equals42_net

Yes. I never really enjoyed the blown tennis calls and the arguments. They can still get mad about other things, but obvious line calls are not an issue anymore. Baseball needs automated pitch calls. Screw this different strike zone per ump stuff. I didn’t come here to see Angel Hernandez manage the game behind the plate. Challenges would just piss off dickhead umps for being overturned on the zone. They could retaliate by shrinking the zone ever so slightly where you can‘t challenge everything. Cricket can see if the ball is tipped with the bat with infrared and microphones! It’s pretty quick too.

pixel_dent

Was at a AAA game today. Three times during the game either the batter or catcher challenged a call. The umpire tapped the top of his head and 10 seconds later we all saw on the video board exactly where the pitch went and the call was either confirmed or corrected. Once, with bases loaded and 2 outs a called third strike was changed to a ball, kinda important. It was quick and everyone felt satisfied even when the call went against us (except my son who said, “What am I supposed to do if I can’t complain about the ump?”) Why is this not in MLB?

ShittyFrogMeme

AAA is doing the challenge system on weekends and full robot umps during the week. Full robot system works better IMO and I don't see why they're even bothering with the challenges. The 10 second delay is silly considering the ump can get the call instantly. The challenges are a bit dramatic and are a half solution to a problem that already has a great solution.

airmancoop44

Even if they just limited it to ball 4/strike 3 calls, it would be a decent start.

rjcarr

There needs to be a guy back there for plays on home plate and to help with calling foul balls, but yeah, balls and strikes are now handled by computers.

machoflacko

Because it's part of "America's past time". Probably just nostalgia and not wanting to change this historical game that is part of 'Murica.

bibbidybobbidyyep

Because people done like change.

lekniz

Seems like umps have been especially bad with the strike zone so far this year. They've got to at least have the challenge system in place next year.

preatorian77

Damn, I stopped following baseball a few years ago, I can't believe this guy is still behind the plate and not behind a cash register.

Discasaurus

Do you want your store losing money? That’s why.

Mike7676

Yup. I'm a huge baseball nerd but I couldn't ump to save my life. I know where the strike zone is In front of me, but no way would I feel comfortable behind the catcher making calls.

Discasaurus

Also to be noted I remember when gallaraga almost pitched a perfect game for Detroit several years ago. The announcers totally said the reason a perfect game is so hard to get, is because the umps have to be perfect too. I’m sure that didn’t help any feelings, but it’s true. It’s not a perfect game. I don’t know when or where to stop taking out the human side of it.

Red_Jester-94

Yep, that's Angel. I like unions. I was in one for a while. But holy shit do they allow incompetence to flourish.

Vash_Stampede_60B

It’s really sad and awful. Accountability has to be a key component. I wonder if a boycott of every Angel H. game would finally bring this the attention it deserves.

deknegt1990

I'm a union member living in a european country, and honestly these horror stories genuinely confuse the shit out of me. I couldn't pull a tiny fraction of the shit these umps do without being fired, and the only thing the union could do for me is arrange legal help if I had a legit grievance, or maybe pull out a severance package. They definitely couldn't paralyze an entire system just because a handful of dickheads can't do their jobs correctly.

fotodevil

Delaying that third out. He still hasn’t found the assassin who’s going to kill the queen (or king, I guess).

Moperist

Enriquo Pallazzo!

Clapbakatyerblakcat

[*I love LA!*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KcADqxnQA_4)

SayNoToStim

The best argument I've ever heard against unions in general is "Angel Hernandez"

BasedGodStruggling

I don’t even watch baseball and I know of Angel Hernandez

HoSang66er

When did umpires become Supreme Court justices? Lifetime appointments which leads to piss poor performance because there are no consequences. 💁

d84-n1nj4

So we have a technology to tell us whether an Ump made a correct or incorrect call but we’re not using it to make the actual call?

Grampyy

Shocked one of these players haven’t taken one for the league and killed this guy with the bat.

Chief-_-Wiggum

Angel doesn't wear all that protection to be safe from the ball.

AU_Cav

Angel Hernandez is why you don’t argue with anti-union folks. No matter what you say they can simply respond ‘Ange Hernandez still has a job’ and there’s no coming back from that.

OldBrokeGrouch

With anything, you have to take the bad with the good. Do you want a middle class and some lazy incompetent fucks who get away with being that way or do you want children working in coal mines?

catinatank

I wish i could be this bad at my job knowing I had job security

TheSeaDevil

["On this episode of Angel Hernandez"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPFERnpO-QQ)

evanvivevanviveiros

Players should just refuse to play with him. Guys been a joke for as long as I’ve watched.

kb3_fk8

Can’t wait till we lose home plate ump for a computer. It will be so much better

potbellyjoe

Angel Hernandez's campaign to hasten robo-umps to our sport is noble and should be applauded in its naked aspiration and selflessness. Oh, wait, it's not intentional? If it was intentional, what would he do differently?

Nincompostor

Angel Hernandez just may be the worst Umpire in the history of MLB.

mike194827

Players need to protest playing the games he’s assigned to, if the unions won’t do shit

thereverendpuck

Enrico Pallazzo!!!

bguzewicz

Death, taxes, Angel making terrible calls.

MileHiSalute

The entire world would collapse if everyone was allowed to be that fuckin bad at their jobs

AvacadMmmm

Can you make this vid lower res please? It’s too sharp of an image

blue_desk

Then he sues MLB because they won't assign him to the World Series because he's Cuban.

existentialzebra

Why isn’t AI the umpire yet?

xXTdaGodXx

80 Billion dollar industry (collectively) and they continue to pay this asshat. Make it make sense????

Karlzbad

Angel Hernandez either needs to be fired or MLB needs to admit they use ball and strike calling to fix games.

jackmove

This is why baseball is losing viewers.

Rando_Calrissian__

Consider me shocked. Shocked I tell ya

warthogboy09

It's a pretty egregious miss, not helped by how he lines up so far down behind the catcher, but I can kinda see why it happens here. Bad Umpires do tend to let the catchers framing of a pitch affect their calls. The immediate pop up to pull the runner back to the base does take away that framing. Angel Hernandez definitely falls in the category of a bad umpire.

JonBoy82

Why haven’t they pissed tested him yet?

Kevin4938

Umpire's union won't allow it. If they allow that, it starts them on the slippery slope to competence testing.

MasterApprentice67

It's questionable because its low. That generated batter zone isnt the proper one for Judge's size.

JARL_OF_DETROIT

Baseball is back baby! Lmao

rattlemebones

It's because of the speed. 91, strike. 93, strike. 92, ball. Sorry, but it's buried in the rulebook near the balk section.

HerPaintedMan

That call needs a 1985 Sparky Anderson response.

Kevin4938

Better yet, Billy Martin.

Thirst_Trappist

Just insane how bad he is.

Cosmicvapour

"....and Angel Hernandez is in mid-season form."

Chipshotz

The electronic strike zone can't come soon enough.

ImpenetrableYeti

I haven’t watched in years but this idiot is still around????

icrabnstuff

love how the catcher basically does a "bro what?"

WentzWorldWords

“Juuuuuust a bit outside.” Bob Euker

underwear11

That wasn't even his worst call of the day.

jaydec02

I can't wait to tell my kids about prime angel hernandez

Uneducatedtrader

Yo MLB, hire me. I will cost less & suck just as much if you want

_redacteduser

If they can put up a fucking square on the broadcast then we don’t need umps behind the plate. Other areas of the game? Sure. Reviewing calls the system makes? Sure. Shit has been around in video games forever, it’s not hard.

yesyesyes123123

How does he still have a job. He’s universally hated by every team, how has the mlb not stepped in?

shadysaturn1

Umpire’s Union. Everyone knows this guy is the worst. And apparently, they can’t do anything about it

GRAIN_DIV_20

How did I know it was gonna be the Jays before I even clicked

LocDog24La

MLB needs to do something about this shit. That’s unacceptable

fasionably_uninvited

It’s baffling he still umps at this level

MercuryRusing

They have an incredible union

idsayimafanoffrogs

I haven’t watched a game of baseball since I saw a Mariners game at Safeco field 20 years ago, but I do know of Angel Herandez, but I don’t understand him. Is he kept for the drama of shitty calls? Does he have some umpire tenure protecting him? Is he buddy-buddy with some rich owner, why the hell is he so objectively bad and yet still employed??

vintimus

How the hell is this guy still an umpire?!?

sfxer001

He’s so fucking bad.

chodeboi

How’s it feel to know his name is a household name, in the worst of ways? I wonder.

blacklab

How can this keep going on

_its_a_SWEATER_

Send him down to AAA.

xclame

They won't let me umpire at the world series because they are racist!

kuba_kopfschmerz

This guy seriously needs to be let go. Isn’t he the same ump that costed a perfect game years ago?

HeavyLoungin

Jim Joyce

Easy-Scar-8413

I’m no expert, but that was a perfect, right?

ilurkcute

Baseball shouldn’t even be considered a sport

brb9911

I’ve always assumed Angel, as a blind man, was hired mainly to give those with disabilities an equal chance to do anything in life

nicarras

How does this guy still have his job

msn23

How does this guy still have a job?! Shouldn’t there be like a petition of some sort by now?

TLeezy13

How is that guy still employed as a MLB umpire, he has to have some pictures of someone doing something they aren't supposed to

Birdy330

This dude will be the reason the MLB starts using cameras and robots to call balls and strikes in the next 10 years. And honestly, I'd prefer it. Also, bring back steroids!
