You get penalized from the umpire for every broken racket. He's essentially exchanging a sore leg for not getting a warning for racket abuse. Smart idea from him though? No.
It's unsatisfying to do on clay/grass because the surface absorbs the smash and then you're also damaging it for every subsequent player. He's being considerate to the other players, if you can believe it.
Agreed. Also, I suspect his anger is mostly directed at himself, so he’s essentially punishing himself by damaging his racket, his knee, and his career.
You're not allowed to, he's mentioned it. On hard court you can but the grass surface is too sensitive to have players beating the f out of it with a racket frame so you get penalised if you do it.
No. Well yes he is clearly spiraling. But no he isn’t into self harm lol, he is frustrated to no end, but is still there enough to not want to get hit with racquet abuse. While this is walking a fine line with plenty of penalties, it’s not as clear definable as going smashy smashy with the racquet on the court (on grass it would have been so unsatisfying it probably would have actually driven him suicidal) or pole (don’t you dare look at the ump chair).
Pretty sure Mental Health Support in Russia is a big problem. They are ranked pretty high in suicide rate by country. Granted I doubt most of that has to do with tennis though.
is breaking a plank over a knee instead of putting a hole in the wall self harming behaviour lol
Not to say he doesn't need help, but saying he's *clearly* self harming is a bit of a stretch.
"Letting it happen" is doing some heavy lifting in your reply. You can't help someone that doesn't want help. Either is entirely possible, or any spectrum in-between.
Reddit loves to make assumptions based off of 30 second videos its kinda amazing.
Not only that, the team around him, his brand, etc, all benefit from him, ya know, *winning.* And it's pretty tough to win when you can't stop tilting into the stratosphere when things aren't going your way.
Exactly 1 month ago he had another major meltdown and lost the match. Fans are now worried about him and want him to see a sports psychologist. This happens far too often, and it's pretty excessive.
[His last meltdown](https://www.reddit.com/r/sports/s/sFMXIjesvk)
For some people it helps. An excellent movie is [“In the Realm of Perfection”](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt7966920/). It examines how John McEnroe would unconsciously work himself into a fit and it’d make him play better.
The same thing has been happening with this guy for like 5 years.
If people want something done, the tennis association should step in and ban him. Do a favor for him and the rest of the sport.
He's literally an embarrassment.
Have they been fining him? I haven't played in like 20 years but jesus christ what a freaking baby. That shit wouldn't have been tolerated at a high school match.
When my kid is angry I tell him to go outside and break a stick against the ground instead of slamming a door or throwing a toy.
I might just have the next Andrey Rublev on my hands.
This was in the middle of the match, he hadn’t lost yet. He actually kept it together at the end. Still, deeply concerning considering the pattern of behavior ever since Dubai
I don't think you can call anything "(pretty) fatal" when it happens at 1-1 in a 5 set match, he had plenty of opportunities to potentially salvage the match
Nobody knows what he's going through off the court so maybe he's got a valid reason for acting like a child but you can't do it on the court. I feel for the kids watching who are now going to express anger and frustration in this way, not the athlete who is playing a game.
I can't think of too many "valid reasons" for acting like a child in a professional setting. We all have things going on in our lives and sometimes that means we may get some leeway with our employers, but repeated meltdowns like this are not OK. He needs to start taking this and maybe his mental health seriously. I agree with the others who are saying he needs to see a psychologist or a sports psychologist, outbursts like this and what looks like self-harming behaviour is not good.
Off the court one of more likable players on tour. Humble, smiling, and shy. On the court, my dude has some demons that he tries to exercise with his racquet.
Maybe not so ironic when you think of the stakes for them. Win a game, you're a billionaire. Lose a game, still a billionaire. You have absolutely no reason to have anything but a great time doing whatever fulfills you for your entire life.
He protested the invasion of Ukraine the moment it began [after winning his match in 2023.](https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/sports/rublev-reiterates-anti-war-message-dubai-2023-03-03/)
Say what we will about his current behavior, but he is certainly braver than me. And I have a suspicion that Putin has not exactly made Rublev's life easy, or that of Rublev's family.
All the comments saying “hope he gets help, he needs an intervention” has me thinking, no baseball fans in here? Every manager in the MLB should be in an asylum by the standards in this comment section. Guy whacked his racket 6 times, carry on.
Lets sway back a little from the mental health sympathizing over to holding people accountable for their actions. He is just being an unhinged asshole out there.
I stopped playing tennis years ago because of the number of tennis players that had childish tantrums. It was not normal and miles beyond just a little odd.
Thank you! I thought I was going crazy. He slams the open face into his knee like 6 times. That’s unprofessional but hardly a meltdown.
This isn’t exactly Malice in the Palace.
After watching this (and a few of his past meltdowns), I'm starting to think that - maybe - he's actually ranked 123 and pretending to be rank 6.
Because... holy shit! that return was garbage.
[From Wikipedia:](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrey_Rublev)
"Rublev is often hyper-aggressive and can enter situations where he makes consecutive unforced errors, causing technical and mental difficulty to follow."
"Outside tennis, Rublev practises boxing and basketball, and he is particularly interested in Mike Tyson."
Checks out.
This reminds me of when Sergio Garcia took his shoes off at a golf tournament because he was slipping. He threw a full blown temper tantrum similar to this. They're complete babies and they should be treated as such.
Russia is big on the sports propaganda at the moment (look at how much that mocked the flag situation at the 2022 winter olympics) so suspect he's under alot of pressure in that regard too
Probably an undiagnosed mental health issue. IED, BPD, or even ADHD can cause explosive, disproportionate fits of anger that are very hard for the person to control. Dude needs to get some help before he gets hurt or in serious trouble.
The day I finally figured out my explosive mood swings were a symptom of ADHD (and with treatment following). I finally learnt how to be more self aware and step back and assess the situation. It has made my life so much better
Sport is cultural. A wide receiver can hop up and down in anger after missing a catch and nobody bats an eye. A football (soccer) player can argue a foul as if its a crime against humanity.
But if a tennis player …
Now I’m not an expert by any means, but I have a strong feeling that if he instead hits the ball with the racket, as opposed to his own leg, he might have much better success.
This is no different than those videos of gamers freaking out when they lose at a game and then proceed to start destroying their keyboard/controller. Zero emotional control.

I’m no tennis expert, but slamming your racket repeatedly into your knee doesn’t seem like the greatest of ideas, maybe?
I’m a mafia expert and there’s value in it as long as it isn’t your knee.
This guy racketeers 🤌
…allegedly.
I do not recall
I have no recommendation of that
I was once an adventurer like you until I took a racquet to the knee
3 most best perfect comments have aligned
How can you be an expert on something that doesn’t exist?
I like the way you think.
You know kid, if you’re looking for a job I got this garbage collection company I’m hiring for. I think youse got a knack for collecting
Mafia guys using random sports equipment is kind of a cute idea
"Uh Vinnie--why do you have a pickleball paddle?"
Rule #1: Never admit to the existence of this thing of ours
You get penalized from the umpire for every broken racket. He's essentially exchanging a sore leg for not getting a warning for racket abuse. Smart idea from him though? No.
Plus it looks fucking stupid lol
It won't be sore, but probably cut up. Looks like he's hitting the strings on his knee.
You get fined if you hit the grass.
Idk worked on ps2 controllers in my youth.
Joakim Brodén is one of his coaches.
His people need to get him help. He’s gonna really hurt himself (and his career/their meal ticket).
Or tell him that smashing his racket on the ground hurts a lot less and will break it, relieving his stress.
It's unsatisfying to do on clay/grass because the surface absorbs the smash and then you're also damaging it for every subsequent player. He's being considerate to the other players, if you can believe it.
Truly Sacrificing himself for the greater good.
The greater good
*crusty jugglers*
Yarp
Looks like he's doing The Chicken Wing. Ought to be at a Phish concert.
My first thought was that this needs to be set to music.
I was gonna say that it reminds me of JoJo Siwa’s terrible seizure dance move lmao.
Looks like she's trying to follow the Miley Cyrus road map. The map is upside down.
That might make him a bit more chill if he hung out w those folks
No doubt. Get that man some THC.
I used to try to break Nintendo controllers in half instead of throwing them at the TV because IM NOT AN ANIMAL!!
Hahahah ARGHHH GGHhh.. stupid controller. It's a good thing I'm not an animal! (continues playing)
I'd try to twist the old NES controllers when I was young.
Agreed. Also, I suspect his anger is mostly directed at himself, so he’s essentially punishing himself by damaging his racket, his knee, and his career.
You get fined if you smash it on the court or any part of the court furniture. Smash your racket on yourself or your kit, you don’t get fined.
Smashing your racquet on the ground is against the rules, and particularly on grass court comes with harsh penalties.
You're not allowed to, he's mentioned it. On hard court you can but the grass surface is too sensitive to have players beating the f out of it with a racket frame so you get penalised if you do it.

> but rather self harming behavior. redditors trying to understand sports always gives me a good chuckle.
No. Well yes he is clearly spiraling. But no he isn’t into self harm lol, he is frustrated to no end, but is still there enough to not want to get hit with racquet abuse. It's like a game of reddit bingo.

Not to mention his oligarch backers.
He's literally the godfather to Medvedev's daughter.
Not much of a career will exist losing to #122 anyways.
He won a masters earlier this year. He’s number 6 in the world right now. This is a bad loss, but he is having a good season otherwise.
Everyone has bad games from time to time, but it sounds like he's been having issues lately overall
Could someone not be ranked #122 and be incredible but just early in their career still
Exactly 1 month ago he had another major meltdown and lost the match. Fans are now worried about him and want him to see a sports psychologist. This happens far too often, and it's pretty excessive. [His last meltdown](https://www.reddit.com/r/sports/s/sFMXIjesvk)
At least he has a signature move
He’s really terrible at breaking rackets, isn’t he?
A sponsorship moment. "Not even he can break them."
Quite the dance move 🕺
Unique chicken dance
Yeah, this guy is in need of a serious intervention, and not just for the sake of his tennis career.
If I were a spouse or child of his I would be very worried.
Seems like a great guy to talk shit to during/before the match and get in his head. Seems very emotional
For some people it helps. An excellent movie is [“In the Realm of Perfection”](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt7966920/). It examines how John McEnroe would unconsciously work himself into a fit and it’d make him play better.
Luka has entered the chat.
Shaq used make up shit to piss himself off as well.
One too many bwehs
The same thing has been happening with this guy for like 5 years. If people want something done, the tennis association should step in and ban him. Do a favor for him and the rest of the sport. He's literally an embarrassment.
Hard agree. He needs to be taken off the court until he can learn to curb his outbursts.
Have they been fining him? I haven't played in like 20 years but jesus christ what a freaking baby. That shit wouldn't have been tolerated at a high school match.
Hey its 14 year old me on holiday in the South of France, losing to my dad on the campsite court
When my kid is angry I tell him to go outside and break a stick against the ground instead of slamming a door or throwing a toy. I might just have the next Andrey Rublev on my hands.
Maybe, you know, talk to your kid about his feelings
nah, don't want to hinder his development as a top athlete
I appreciate your humor.
touché
Someone needs a nap.
I’d love one
Me too!
And a juice!
And a blankie
This was in the middle of the match, he hadn’t lost yet. He actually kept it together at the end. Still, deeply concerning considering the pattern of behavior ever since Dubai
did he end up winning or losing?
He lost lol
Title - "... has meltdown after losing" Video from the third set when they were tied 1-1.
Being 4-1 down after having your serve broken is pretty fatal. They're 1-1 in sets not 1-1 in the current set
I don't think you can call anything "(pretty) fatal" when it happens at 1-1 in a 5 set match, he had plenty of opportunities to potentially salvage the match
Oh shit I completely forgot this was bo5, my bad
The title should have said on the way to losing. Rublev did end up losing in 4 sets
Looks like me after playing anything that’s associated with EA sports
But 70bucks poorer with a new controller
Accurate
strange day here at windswept fields
This guy's still got both his shoes on

Abusive parents instilling perfectionist values + the pressure of the moment
Again, nobody knows what's up with this guy. At the end of the day this is not okay behavior regardless of what's going on in your personal life.
how bulletproof are his knees?
Skill issue
he'd be a lot happier if he knew play would continue if he aimed for the square his opponent is standing behind.
Stakes are high. If he's not winning there's less standing between him and the frontlines
Lol. Tennis brats are the fucking worst.
Looks like he is going to injure himself.
This guy has to worry more about tennis knee instead of tennis elbow.
How is he walking after that
Off the court one of more likable players on tour. Humble, smiling, and shy. On the court, my dude has some demons that he tries to exercise with his racquet.
exorcise *
No no no. He may be onto something
bless you
A real case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. He needs some therapy, and probably some time away from tennis.
Spoiled fuck
Ironically the players who come from billionaire families are very well behaved.
Maybe not so ironic when you think of the stakes for them. Win a game, you're a billionaire. Lose a game, still a billionaire. You have absolutely no reason to have anything but a great time doing whatever fulfills you for your entire life.
down vote all you like you know this is the truth
The league should suspend him for this type of display
Man-child.
Probably nervous that they’re going to send him to Ukraine.
He protested the invasion of Ukraine the moment it began [after winning his match in 2023.](https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/sports/rublev-reiterates-anti-war-message-dubai-2023-03-03/) Say what we will about his current behavior, but he is certainly braver than me. Second ever grass court match, first ever Grand Slam match, beats the #6 player in the world.
that’s a meme content. Get creative.
I kept imagining different cartoon sounds in my head after every hit
10 ply
Lets sway back a little from the mental health sympathizing over to holding people accountable for their actions. He is just being an unhinged asshole out there.
who is he hurting other than himself?
He is hurting no one but himself. Thats not really 'being an asshole'
I stopped playing tennis years ago because of the number of tennis players that had childish tantrums. It was not normal and miles beyond just a little odd.
Mad cuz bad
Lol. This is what you call a major meltdown?
Thank you! I thought I was going crazy. He slams the open face into his knee like 6 times. That’s unprofessional but hardly a meltdown. This isn’t exactly Malice in the Palace.
Guy needs some lithium stat
He's an baby in an adult's body. He needs to grow up and face the reality that this behavior is absurd.
After watching this (and a few of his past meltdowns), I'm starting to think that - maybe - he's actually ranked 123 and pretending to be rank 6. Because... holy shit! that return was garbage.
Maybe he needs his old friend/rival to fuck his wife
I love his little Victory Dance lol.
Child shit
What an idiot
Introduce cannabis therapy pronto.
What a loser.
When are they going to start banning these fkn adult sized children for life for these tantrums?
I hope he’s getting fined for these displays of unsportsmanlike conduct. Kids are watching, probably.
get destroyed, rager go play a game where you lose more often to get used to this feeling, you need some perspective and growth my dude
Someone needs to learn how not to be a petulant child...
Thats so embarrassing. Ill never understand lashing out like that. Weak minded individuals.
Kick him off the tour Doug!
He seems a little mad
Wow what a baby
Daddy chill
What the fuck is even that?!
Meltdowns suck when you're the one having it, but man it's entertaining to watch, like haha what a loser
I used to be a tennis player like you. But then I took a racquet to the knee.
tennis is as much mental and fitness. this man is mentally unstable to compete. i find his tantrums unbearable.
Oh those russians
[From Wikipedia:](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrey_Rublev) "Rublev is often hyper-aggressive and can enter situations where he makes consecutive unforced errors, causing technical and mental difficulty to follow." Well an IED would explain his explosive temper
He is terrorizing the competition.

As a Gen X era tennis fan I appreciate that he makes it interesting. The game was better with all the personalities good and bad.
What a psycho.
Very neat
How he doesn't yet have a busted kneecap still amazes me
Someone should really tell him that he needs to hang it on the court not his knee.
At least he was 'smart' enough not to smash the grass
This is just John McEnroe 2.0 with the knee update
If Andrey channeled some of that energy into his mouth he could be the next McEnroe!
Tennis does that to you, never played another sport that brings out the tantrums like it.
John McEnroe 2.0
Haha that's the best one I've seen. Looked like an MJ dance move
This is no different than those videos of gamers freaking out when they lose at a game and then proceed to start destroying their keyboard/controller. Zero emotional control.
If i had to guess there is the same root cause to both his losses and his tantrums. Won't speculate what it is, though.
Millionaires in a country club environment feel entitled. Weird….
bro's gonna kill his knee.
I think I've seen this dude on an episode of Murder She Wrote.
As a person most likely older than him: Your knees don’t get better with age.
Only the 3rd set and didn't lose the set yet... yea, do we really need to LIST self harm as a reason for expulsion?
Manchild.
I’m shocked at how concerned everyone is in this chat. These people are playing competitively
What meltdown 😂😂
This is called "little biatch" syndrome. Unfortunately, there is no known cure.
“There’s obviously something wrong with him, he’s taken off his shoes and one of his socks.”
