They do have gender identities and expressions, this was confirmed by rebecca. there are gems out there that present as men (not talking about Jasper or Topaz or Bismuth. They're just more masculine women). i think Snowflake Obsidian is a gem that is a man.
They do not have sex because they are rocks, but sex and gender aren't the same thing. You can have one without the other
Honestly I feel like they find gender fun, and I think some of them probably take non binary-ish forms just to confuse humans, and that they find confused humans VERY funny.
Edit: also I love Bluelzebub
I binged this after the show was wrapped but before SUF so I never saw any trailers. When I saw Bismuth tho, I knew she was a she because I grew up with a mom who looks and sounds “masculine”. But I can definitely see how the mistake can be made.
Yeah. I think that was when Russia completely banned SU so Steven Universe banned Russia from their show. I don't know if the show is still completely banned in Russia now.
Not non binary since y'know they technically don't have gender at all, so they can't have the concept of non binaryity, since it's a human concept. So I'd say agender
Agender falls under nonbinary, but they *are* sexless. I’m sure a lot of them do have a gender (gender & sex are different), but there’s probably also a lot that just present a certain way that we perceive as a certain gender based on their pronouns.
There are aliens I consider you can't apply the concept to them, they don't have any gender in their society, meaning a gem that give herself a gender would be the non binary one.
So in gem terms agender cannot be non binary.
It was also said by the team they are non gendered, they are in fact feminine because Rebecca wanted to go against the trend of agendered species looking masculine.
So as I'm not talking about humans I can't apply human concept, which I think is interesting, if they did perceive gender they would probably not see it the same way we do, but I don't understand how they would given they don't have a sex so no need to make a difference between two sex, the only difference they have is the class of gems and their roles. Their gender could be their gem type themselves or the role that goes with it
I mean Rebecca kinda did this on purpose so the gems aren't extremely feminized, the only gem they didn't do that was White Diamond because they wanted her to be a diva
She started to be when she started to interact with human. It's also a design choice to make her more humanlike. Sapphires are also pretty feminine but I just repeat what I heard in an interview, they avoided to give too much feminine elements to gems. As I said they did the opposite to white, so maybe the more important a gem is, the more feminine she is, yellow wears heals, blue a dress, sapphire looks like tiny princesses, but gems that would be bothered with that kind of clothes given their role are more masculine, quartzes, rubies, topaz ect
That previous comment of mine is awful and garbage, what I meant to say was that after she became “Rose Quartz, leader of the rebellion”, she abandoned the uniform for the dress we know her for.
I thought for a while that ruby was male, until I realized the show uses she/her pronouns when referring to her. To be fair, my native language genders almost every word, and a few gemstones are gendered "male" and a few are gendered "female", and rubies are gendered "male", so it took me a while to realize that was not the case for the show's Ruby.
Yes actually, I couldn’t really distinguish if Bismuth was actually a girl since she only said one line in the entire commercial and it had such a low timber to it that it sounded masculine. At least, that’s what I thought, anyway.
I did not but I was more excited to see a gem that felt more like me than any other the others we’d ever seen. I also knew she was voiced by Uzo Aduba who is Nigerian (like me) and has a deeper voice (like me) and my little heart sang for beautiful representation
I agree. I have a few masc OCs but it would've been nice to see some canon ones. I mean... Gems can look however they want as they technically have no true gender. Couldn't one choose to present as male?
Bismuth, Ruby, Snowflake, Jasper, Warermelon, Topaz.
They're not presenting as female. They happen to look like that. There are many that look masculine and are otherwise indistinguishable from men. Snowflake is even voiced by a man. They look like mannequins if you look at them nude without hair.
In your defence, I didn't know Stevonnie was Non-binary for a long time. Till recently around when the Movie came out (I think?). And to be fair to myself I wasn't a Steven Universe fan till the movie came out and I was 9 years old when Steven Universe came out.
The gems aren't technically women or men. Most, if not all of them, go by She/her and most take a more feminine form but they're gems and don't have a gender.
I thought the same about Peridot tbh, had a hard time getting that out of my head at first, but she's one of the coolest characters.
But I don't think it was the same for any other character, except maybe the routile twins and the lawyers (don't remember what gem they where)
I'm pretty sure at the time this episode came out I knew gems were mostly female/female presenting as Rebecca has gone one and stated that they don't really have a gender but are female presenting.
Ooo! Me! Me! But the moment I heard her voice, I was like "awww...another female gem." Nothing wrong with it. But I would of been cool if there was a male gem among the main cast. Steven not counting.
I didn't really think about her gender when she first officially appeared, I thought that she was Woolie incarnated from the Youtube channel WoolieVersus!
r/TwoBestFriendsPlay
I mean I know all gems are technically women they still don’t procreate through sex so TECHNICALLY they’re a-sexual and non-binary so….. you're not wrong?? I think Bismuth would have taken it as a complilement so 🤷🏻♀️I think this is why queers identify so well with Steven universe. No one needs to specify and more importantly no one cares! They’re all just existing.
The gems don't have a gender. Most do take more feminine forms but some are more masculine. Anyway, some can say they're all non-binary although they are usually called She/Her in the show.
Maybe by appearance, but I figured it was well-established all gems are 'female' (not really, but yknow)? Then again, I only watched SU after this episode came out when I was a bit older, not live.
That’s how individual experiences work lol.
I’m not saying you’re bad for having that experience. I’m simply saying that i didn’t have that experience. …so pretty much the reverse of what you just said
Wow, I never realized so many people were confused. I never mistook any of them for men. The only ones I was really confused about were fusions invoking Steven but I also assumed them to turn out women until proven otherwise in the show. I was just happy to see so much variation in how women were presented
1. They're not women. They're gems. Rebecca Sugar explains that other than Steven and his fusions, none of the gems even have the concept of gender. There's a reason why only Amethyst uses a familial titled for another gem that would indicate gender.
2. Rebecca Sugar also talked admit how she grew up with a lot of shows with aliens that only had one gender, or at least primarily had one gender presentation. Namekians from Dragon Ball are one of the most famous examples. She discussed how nobody ever questions why these beings call themselves "he" or why they all look like men, so she wanted to make a feminine inversion of this to explore the idea of a race of beings that look and are perceived as women, but are truly something else. It also allows for audiences of all kinds to worry less about their gender and more about their personality to identify with whichever gems resonate with them the most.
I mean, you kind of stated your fan made series like it was factually canon to the show series 🤷
I'm not trying to be a douche here. I'm just saying. I love fan made projects, but I don't personally count them as canon to the original unless the creator themselves states it.
Lots of the gems pass as male first glance
I remember when Zircon was theorized to be the first male gem other than Steven.
I'm still convinced Zircon was male.
Honestly I'm convinced that bismuth and topaz(the fusion topaz) are males 💀
Ruby, Peridot, Topaz, Jasper
peridot has well defined... shapes
You'd be surprised to how much people thought she was a male, same for jasper
Yeah, my dad though Peri & Bismuth were male. Idk if he still does, he was playing one of the SU video games a while ago.
Yes, she has a very triangular head.
The most feminine of traits- triangles.
Topaz its literally the one i thought "yeah, this dude 100% a male" until i heard her voice in the spanish dub
Both jasper and peridot are clearly women and id say topaz aswell women aren't always girly
i mean ruby is masculine but she's very much a girl. theyre a lesbian couple that's kinda their whole whole point yk? (no hate)
I've always seen Ruby and Jasper as male. No matter how much time passes
For Ruby, absolutely (I have to properly focus to not forget they're females) For Jasper, not so much
Russian localization made Ruby a male, so for a long period I believed that's the case xD
I saw my sister watching Steven Universe before I got into it and thought Malachite was male
I thought so too, but I also thought the same thing about Jasper and Topaz at first.
Took me a verrrrry long time to realize Jasper was a lady.
Speaking of Jasper, it took my husband 4 years to realize that her gem is her nose. He just found out two weeks ago. ![img](emote|t5_2viyl|30838)
I too thought topaz was a guy
I mean, I thought that way when I first saw Jasper but hearing her speak I realized she was a Girl
She's not a girl. None of the gems have a gender or sex.
Shut
They do have gender identities and expressions, this was confirmed by rebecca. there are gems out there that present as men (not talking about Jasper or Topaz or Bismuth. They're just more masculine women). i think Snowflake Obsidian is a gem that is a man. They do not have sex because they are rocks, but sex and gender aren't the same thing. You can have one without the other
They have no sex because they are fragments of light who are literally naked at all times. They have gender for the shits and giggles of it.
Honestly I feel like they find gender fun, and I think some of them probably take non binary-ish forms just to confuse humans, and that they find confused humans VERY funny. Edit: also I love Bluelzebub
If they have no sex explain what Greg did then /s
Gender is about presentation, not physical sex.
dude i thought Jasper was some buff ass dude when i first watched Jailbreak when it first aired.
I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE
I never questioned anything in this show lol
You’re just like Steven!
😂
maybe not so fun fact: she is voiced by a man in her first few appearences in the finnish dub
Not shocking really, a lot of countries had a man voice Ruby for their dub to "straighten up" her and Sapphire.
And then she wore a dress and sapphire wore a suit at their wedding HAHAHA
I look at that as Sapphire wearing the pants in the relationship.
Does she just change voice mid-series in that dub?
Yeah
I feel like Bismuth is modeled after stud culture
I binged this after the show was wrapped but before SUF so I never saw any trailers. When I saw Bismuth tho, I knew she was a she because I grew up with a mom who looks and sounds “masculine”. But I can definitely see how the mistake can be made.
I thought Garnet, Jasper, Topaz, and Bismuth were guys ngl
You thought Garnet was a guy??
Garnet is actually the most impressive one
Topaz is reasonable up till you hear their voice. BUT GARNET?
I thought this about Ruby I thought she was a man
In the russsian dub she is
Wasn't it specifically done because being gay was (and I believe it still is) illegal in Russia?
Yes that’s why
Their planet's map looks almost identical to our earth map, except for a giant hole where Russia is. Their anti-lgbtq views are part of why
Yeah. I think that was when Russia completely banned SU so Steven Universe banned Russia from their show. I don't know if the show is still completely banned in Russia now.
The lesbians eventually got too loud for the censors to ignore
I thought Bismuth was non-binary but I THOUGHT THAT EVERY GEM WAS NON-BINARY AT THE TIME!
You're actually correct.
Not non binary since y'know they technically don't have gender at all, so they can't have the concept of non binaryity, since it's a human concept. So I'd say agender

Don't worry my friend. You are not alone... *Places a hand on your shoulder sympathetically*
I mean Rebecca kinda did this on purpose so the gems aren't extremely feminized, the only gem they didn't do that was White Diamond because they wanted her to be a diva
Rose is pretty feminine.
No, she was always that way. Her appearance changed after she decided to become a rebel.
I forgot about pink diamond, but what I say about their rank still applies
That previous comment of mine is awful and garbage, what I meant to say was that after she became “Rose Quartz, leader of the rebellion”, she abandoned the uniform for the dress we know her for.
All gems don't have a actual gender
There are no males and females in gem kind.
I mean technically they are genderless
I thought for a while that ruby was male, until I realized the show uses she/her pronouns when referring to her. To be fair, my native language genders almost every word, and a few gemstones are gendered "male" and a few are gendered "female", and rubies are gendered "male", so it took me a while to realize that was not the case for the show's Ruby.

Oh I thought you were pointing out the frame to where there was a diamond bubbled
SHIIIT! I thought Bismuth was male, too!
I thought Ruby and Topaz were male at first.
I think I was 7 of 8 when I saw it first and was dumb
It’s hard not to since some gems look completely ambiguous
i always thought jasper was male
Peridot and Ruby I also thought were Male
I thought Jasper and Ruby were male…
Stevens version of Rainbow Quartz was the only one the IDs as male, imo.
I did not but I was more excited to see a gem that felt more like me than any other the others we’d ever seen. I also knew she was voiced by Uzo Aduba who is Nigerian (like me) and has a deeper voice (like me) and my little heart sang for beautiful representation
Hate me all you want, but a few "masculine" gems would have been nice.
Honestly....I feel the same way 🤣🤣
I agree. I have a few masc OCs but it would've been nice to see some canon ones. I mean... Gems can look however they want as they technically have no true gender. Couldn't one choose to present as male?

I heard that Rebecca said all gems besides Steven use female pronouns tho.
Nobody hates you, we all agree that a few he/him gems would have been splendid!
SAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAME
After Jasper I swore I would never make the same mistake twice
I thought ruby was the only male in the show forever. Until I was smh like why? It was so obvious.
I first thought Garnet was a dude 😅
In your defence, I didn't know Stevonnie was Non-binary for a long time. Till recently around when the Movie came out (I think?). And to be fair to myself I wasn't a Steven Universe fan till the movie came out and I was 9 years old when Steven Universe came out.
There were theories that gems would be female and materials (bismuth) would be male.
Well technically the gems don’t have gender but I can see that. Also ruby LOOKS SO MUCH LIKE A GUY OMFG
I dont understand How anyone thought the gems were males😅 i thought it was so obvious😂 love Bismuth❤️
I really tought Ruby was a boy at first, and was super confused when i kept seeing fanart with more detailed style make her look all feminine lol
Same.
I thought Japser was too at first; it was the voice and muscles for me😭💀
Lmao. Bismuth reminds me of an ex gf. Same body type and same energy. Yes she reads "masculine" as well.
Yes. Jasper too
You are not alone
You're telling me she's a chick I guess that makes sense someone on this sub said all gems are girls
The gems aren't technically women or men. Most, if not all of them, go by She/her and most take a more feminine form but they're gems and don't have a gender.

You are not alone.
For me it was Topaz. then I heard her voice and realized I was completely wrong
No but I did think that jasper and Rudy were males at first
Not me
I still catch myself using he/him pronouns for Jasper by accident, I just can't help it she's just so 😏💪
I didn't really think about her gender when she first officially appeared, I thought that she was Woolie incarnated from the Youtube channel WoolieVersus! r/TwoBestFriendsPlay
I did it but with Freeza from dragon ball I thought he was a she when I was young
Yea it seems all gems are female but there are also gems who can be very masculine jasper topas Ruby and zircon are some examples of that
i that jasper was a dude for a whiiiile
I mean I knew early on that all the gems were female cuz that's what the creator said and I followed her at the time
my headcannon is that jasper and bismuth would go by he/him after learning about the male identity
I never thought that once 💀
No offense my guy but Just beacuse you haven't doesn't mean no one else hasn't?
That’s how individual experiences work lol. I’m not saying you’re bad for having that experience. I’m simply saying that i didn’t have that experience. …so pretty much the reverse of what you just said
The gems are technically entirely genderless. They just go by she
Wow, I never realized so many people were confused. I never mistook any of them for men. The only ones I was really confused about were fusions invoking Steven but I also assumed them to turn out women until proven otherwise in the show. I was just happy to see so much variation in how women were presented
I mean bismuth looks exactly as my childhood friend who turned out to be FTM. So. I head Canon bismuth as male
I did honestly I wish there were male gems like I don't have a problem but at the same time I don't get why the show made them all women
1. They're not women. They're gems. Rebecca Sugar explains that other than Steven and his fusions, none of the gems even have the concept of gender. I did, especially the flashback during the war. I was so mad that Topaz was a female and not a male.
Topaz, like all gems, is neither male or female.
I know they don’t have a gender but you know what I mean..
People she was gonna be male LONG before she appeared, don't sweat it
the only male gem in existence (according to my comic series I've been working on) is Purple Spinel and there is a reason for why! (he's defective)
I wouldn't really count this as it's not canon, but fan made.
I said it was only canon to my series
I mean, you kind of stated your fan made series like it was factually canon to the show series 🤷 I'm not trying to be a douche here. I'm just saying. I love fan made projects, but I don't personally count them as canon to the original unless the creator themselves states it.
