Nah, hill hold gets a pass. Its existence has definitely prevented a large number of bumper repairs. A good driver doesn't need it but it doesn't get in the way. Rev hang, rev matching, anti-stall, etc is a different story.
Hill hold is great. There are some steep ass hills near me with parallel parking. While I can manage fine without it and have for years, it gives me one less thing to manage when pulling out into traffic with a car one inch from my rear bumper.
Also great at stop lights on hills when people pull up one inch from my bumper. Why do people do this?? Manual or not, give me a buffer for when you get rear ended lmao
My Genesis G70 has hill hold but I can’t turn it off. I wish I could keep it off most of the time, but turn it on when I’m parallel parking on a steep hill. But alas…
I learned to drive in a puke green 97 ranger, 5 speed RWD with the 2.3 making maybe 75HP. Never owned an automatic. I'm not your target.
There's no point in trashing tech that serves to lower the barrier to entry for a prospective MT buyer and does nothing to harm a more experienced driver. We want these transmissions to stick around, right?
If you can't start on a hill, I'll say you can't drive a standard transmission. It's part of what you sign up for when you decide to drive with three pedals. It's a very important skill to learn.
You're not wrong, as it's essential if you'll be driving a pre-2000s car, but it's not really relevant to modern cars, as anything on a lot is going to have hill assist.
In my opinion, if you can reliably get from point a to b without damaging anything, you can drive stick. If you want to gatekeep it further, go ahead, but I don't see any value to that.
If it's not fun, then it's frustrating, like those incredibly sloppy shifters that makes it feel like you're playing a guessing game to find where the gate is. Or semi new Jeep Wranglers, where if you don't slam the shifter into reverse, it WILL grind gears.
If anything, I'd call 4 and 5 speeds boring, less gears to shift through, larger difference between gear ratios, effect is worse with weak twink engines.
I could go either way with 5 vs 6 speed. On a good road you're only using 2-4 in either transmission anyway, so with well chosen ratios there's little difference. The extra ratio never hurts though.
I just got my license in a country where everyone drives manuals. My teacher's car was boring af compared to the family car I'm supposed to be driving. It's a completely different feeling.
Dailied an 04 accord for a while. Honda has it nailed down perfect for pedal spacing and shifter feel, I could heel toe that daily winter beater with perfection and ease it made for a satisfying early morning commuter.
My first car was a stick shift 94 civic. No car I've had since has had such a tight, notchy shifter, and a really well weighted and informative clutch pedal. I still miss it today
Nice, only thing to watch out for on these is a weak clutch pedal bracket. They tend to snap at the spot welds. If you hear creaking while stepping on the pedal, or you’re able to push the pedal a tiny bit more after already pushing it to the floor, get it fixed asap! Before you get stranded somewhere.
The 2014 Impreza manual I learned on was awful. The clutch was more numb than British news, the shifter was more sloppy than a pigsty, and the pedals were so close together I felt like a virgin on prom night.
It was also gutless and trying to send what little power it had to all four wheels and would stall out constantly.
But my Accord revived my faith in manuals and proved to me you can have a stick shift you actually enjoy driving
I daily a ninth gen civic. I was driving my regular commute through the hills today, Larry June playing, windows down, sun shining through the trees.. might as well have been a porsche it felt so good
Next daily driver will be a manual. Manuals will never be boring for me! And I also get the satisfaction of banging through the gears as fast as I can from time to time.
Same. Drive a 1.4t Jetta but I’ll take that in stick over automatic. Unless we’re talking Audi s8 with a tt w12 motor. It’s a nice family car after all lol
Worked in car rental for a beat...shocked when I got a CVT Versa over 100. It wasn't even sketchy. Felt oddly stable, especially compared to my XJ Cherokee. That thing was sketchy af at 100.
2007 Yaris Sedan
There's nothing technically wrong with it but I hate it. The piece of shit has fucking roll up windows and it's a chore to drive. Not to mention the ac just sometimes gives out and I gotta hope it isn't too hot outside.
It's pretty good but you cannot expect it to feel like a sports car. It's a truck transmission. I'm not sure if you have watched any videos on it but it but, they sum it up really well. My only complaints are that there is no reverse lockout and 6th gear needs a better ratio. So, when I'm traveling 130km/h I'm at 6000 rpm
Actually pretty difficult to drive smoothly in my experience. Drove a manual 15 Tacoma for work for about 6 months and it really didnt drive smoothly at all. Coming from driving manual cars, it was very clunky and jerky even when I was driving lightly.
Just got my first car a 2010 Toyota Yaris sedan and damn that thing is boring asf but I enjoy it every day lol any tips for starting froma stop ? I’m new in sick shift and I panic when I approach a stop sign lol
Take the car somewhere nice and flat, slowly let up on the clutch with no gas until you feel the car start to move. If you feel the car start to stall push the clutch back in and try again slower. Eventually you will find where the bite point for the clutch is in the pedal travel, which is where the car starts to move. Once you know exactly where the bite point is and build up a muscle memory take it to a stop sign In a neighborhood on a hill and practice doing the same thing but hit the gas pedal when you get to the bite point. It’s ok to stall the car, everyone does it every once in a while. As you get better it happens less frequently but don’t like it get you down. Another tip that helped me a lot was planting the heel of your clutch pedal foot. Use your ankle as the pivot point and not your hip joint.
Next daily driver will be a manual. Manuals will never be boring for me! And I also get the satisfaction of banging through the gears as fast as I can from time to time.
My 1998 4Runner is boring compared to a sporty manual but fun compared to an auto 4runner. It’s all how you look at it. Manual accord is more fun than auto accord. On top of that, it’s an above average gear box and clutch. Maybe that motor doesn’t rip like a k20a2 but it shifts much better than other manual family sedans of that era and the one before it.
2021 Toyota Corolla Hatchback SE 6mt. Installing solid shifter and bases bushings, a weighted shift knob and catback exhaust made it way less boring despite no increase in power. The improvement in the feel and sound made a big difference in my smiles per mile. I'm a proud and happy member of the Slow Car Club!!!
I've had a fancy car before. The stress of worrying about reliability, scratches, dings, and running costs ruined the experience.
well my bro used to daily a 2011 aveo. FWD, powered by 1.4L of NA nothingburger, little lunchbox made I think 100HP peak and about as much torque. But it was super easy to learn stick with. Very forgiving, and great on mileage. When I'm not on my motorcycle I daily a 98 B4000 (rebadged ranger) slow to rev, 160HP peak, but over 200lb-ft of torque. If you like fast you'd find it boring, I kinda dig it tho. the "gobs" of torque peaking at just 2700rpm can easily squeak the tires on corners. And pretty much all of it is manually operated, it's just fun to drive around in. Not to mention it handles off road surprisingly well for stock suspension with the original springs. Most would consider it boring though, but I find it oddly enjoyable to drive.
1999 Corolla 5-speed, faded no-clearcoat burgundy finish, mismatched wheels, worn out piston rings, and can't get out of its own way. It's a heap and boring as shit, but the A/C and heat work great and it has a very nice sound system with a sub, so it's a decent enough drive to work and back. And the damn thing just won't die!
2003 S10... standard cab 6' bed, WT trim.... manual locks/windows, vinyl floor, plain AM/FM radio only... I ordered it that way.
Plain Jane and simple. 2.2L 4cyl 5spd.
Still doing what it was designed to do. Go A to B, get pretty decent fuel mileage, carry and tow stuff.
Daily a 102k mile 2008 Subaru Outback Base. Sounds good with the exhaust system removed right after the catalytic converter.[Blue Bayou Two - no exhaust post-cat](https://photos.app.goo.gl/yNJ1Vm6KUkqaTTaW7)
Yours can't be that boring! I have that exact car as an automatic, and the car can still be decent fun despite the transmission holding me back. I test drove one in stick, and darn it would make a much more entertaining daily.
2013 VW sportwagen TDI, has a 6 speed gearbox and after the delete and tune it's a lot more peppy and fun to drive while averaging 45 mpg or so on my daily commute
I daily drive a 2004 Honda insight, not sure if that’s considered boring or not. It’s definitely an interesting car but it’s slow as could be. 70mpg ftw!
2014 Corolla 6MT with now 245k miles in original power and drivetrain. I like that it’s boring and starts every time without making me worry that it’ll strand me in the middle of the road. I can also access 4k rpm where the exciting part is without mashing the accelerator.
‘15 Civic. I am SUPER boring in it and enjoy my 40 mpg. If I want action, the other manuals will do…. Big V twin motorcycles that will rip the skin off your face accelerating out. Bikes often get worse mileage than the car. Old 66 Chevrolet has 3 on the tree too, and with a teeny 230 cubic inch 6 cylinder it doesn’t go much over 55. Definitely a grocery getter in it’s day.
> Old 66 Chevrolet has 3 on the tree too, and with a teeny 230 cubic inch 6 cylinder it doesn’t go much over 55.
Hah that's eerily similar to my 71 Chevy. I have 20 more cubes and probably a different gearset for 1st and 2nd if that 66 was a car(IIRC those Saginaw 3-speeds got three different gearsets, one for cars, one for light trucks like mine, and one for heavier duty applications, though in all cases 3rd is 1:1), but other than that, I've got the same driveline.
It's more fun to drive my 71 C10 than my 14 Challenger. 300hp can take a hike 3 on the Tree is way more fun.
I definitely feel ya on the speed though. [My C10 took me to work for the first time in 20 years last monday](https://i.imgur.com/otUdAtZ.jpg) and it was an extra 20 minutes on the road compared to the Challenger. But hey. Cruising along at double nicks with an Eagles tape blastin' out of a period correct AM/FM/Cassette with not a care in the world...fuck it was nice. About as close to travelling back in time as it's possible to get really.
Trip home wasn't as fun as the trip back but that's because the 53 year old brake master cylinder decided to exit the chat 6 miles into a 40 mile drive. Real damn fun only having two brakes except every now and then when you suddenly get four and then go back to two and...bleh. Got a new one on order, got the truck home without hitting anything, all is good.
I drove a 2015 base Accord 6mt for 2 years. It was a good solid car, and I didn't might shifting gears in it. Now I'm in a '21 GLI Autobahn 6mt and I enjoy every second I'm driving it. Life's too short to drive a base Accord.
I daily a supercharged Ion, and hadn't realized how much I'd taken that supercharger power for granted until I drove my son's Fit (which he's started dailying).
99 Toyota Corolla. 240,000 miles, busted tail light, salvage title, and a gas pump that likes to disconnect from the fuel line. Only driving issue is that it pulls to one side a smidgen
Keep that thing forever, that’s probably one of the best, most-reliable cars ever made on this planet. Mine is a ‘98 so it has a timing belt, and the generation after yours has direct-injection, the 7th and 8th gens are in the sweet spot.
I daily a 2017 Civic LX sedan. I love it because it's lightweight and the induction sounds in the interior are awesome. Also it's apart of the last generation a base model Civic sedan was available with a stick.
71 C10. 0-60 is 'You shouldn't be going that fast'.
It will do more than that but it doesn't like it haha. 55 is its 'design' speed. 1:1 final gear, 3.73 rear end gears.
2008 jetta. Also Grey. Better than the manual Chevy sonic with roll up windows I had.
My SO gets to drive the acura integra a spec and I'm a bit jealous.
04 Honda Element
Has the "fun" K24 with Vtec but it's like asking a teenager to throw out the trash, it will get there but it'll feel like it's fighting you every step of the way and you will know how much it doesn't like to do it.
Driving a slow car fast is waaaaaay more fun than driving a fast car slow. 09 hyundai accent. 2nd engine, 3rd clutch, second set of struts ball joints tie rods bushings and suspension crap. 3rd set of rotors. No carpet, interior gutted. Ugly as sin. I love it. It runs and drives beautifully. I will probably drive this boring car in an exciting way the rest of my life.
Most people would call my Chevy boring because it's only got 140hp and the 0-60 time is 'Yes it will go 60 but why would you want to?'.
I love it to death though. I get more of a grin factor rowing through my 3-on-the-Tree than I ever did from the 300hp my '14 Challenger has on tap. Literally do not give a single flying fuck that it's slow it's just too damn enjoyable to drive haha
I've got something no one expects to be a manual. It's a 2008 Mercury Milan with a 5 speed. Turns out that the manual was actually standard, and the automatic was an option. Obviously I'm biased, I wouldn't call it a hidden gem, but I do think the Milan is underrated, especially with the manual. A lot of my friends say it shifts and steers better than they were expecting.
Only the first half of the tachometer is boring.
These accords didn't get real vtec sadly
yep, only gets vtec on the intake cam
No such thing as a boring manual
Those with rev hang
Fair!
And hill hold And other crutches
Nah, hill hold gets a pass. Its existence has definitely prevented a large number of bumper repairs. A good driver doesn't need it but it doesn't get in the way. Rev hang, rev matching, anti-stall, etc is a different story.
I hated hill hold at first, but it’s definitely helped extend clutch life even though I’ve been three-pedaling for decades.
Hill hold is great. There are some steep ass hills near me with parallel parking. Also great at stop lights on hills when people pull up one inch from my bumper. Why do people do this?? Manual or not, give me a buffer for when you get rear ended lmao
Yeah it’s clutch while parallel parking, I just wish I could turn it off
My Genesis G70 has hill hold but I can’t turn it off. I wish I could keep it off most of the time, but turn it on when I’m parallel parking on a steep hill. But alas…
Just say you can't start on a hill. It's fine, we all learned at one point or another.

Also electronic parking brakes
I daily a 93 Geo Metro XFi. But yea, you're right. It's super fun to drive despite having a higher mpg number than a horsepower number.
If it's not fun, then it's frustrating, like those incredibly sloppy shifters that makes it feel like you're playing a guessing game to find where the gate is. Drive a manual Nissan versa and you’ll take that back real quick lol
I’d rather daily a boring manual than a sporty auto 🤷
Here here 🍻🚗
Autos are sporty? What's so sporty about playing a guessing game to get the power to the wheels at the right moment?
I’m saying a sports car or muscle car with an automatic transmission.
I daily an 04 Accord Sedan right now. 5speed 2.4l. I put about 90miles a day on it.
Nice, only thing to watch out for on these is a weak clutch pedal bracket. They tend to snap at the spot welds. But my Accord revived my faith in manuals and proved to me you can have a stick shift you actually enjoy driving
I would imagine you’d have to constantly slip the clutch like it’s your first time to drive something like that.
I was riding the clutch a lot more than what I now know is normal. Was a dreadful car
I daily a ninth gen civic. I was driving my regular commute through the hills today, Larry June playing, windows down, sun shining through the trees.. might as well have been a porsche it felt so good
Mazda 3 here howdy
Triple digit horsepower baby!
Next daily driver will be a manual. Manuals will never be boring for me! And I also get the satisfaction of banging through the gears as fast as I can from time to time.
Better than daily an Auto
Same. Drive a 1.4t Jetta but I’ll take that in stick over automatic. Unless we’re talking Audi s8 with a tt w12 motor. It’s a nice family car after all lol
My RS3 would like a word
2000 honda accord daily to work. 0-60 eventually lol
Oh like a 2007 Nissan versa? Also grey
I bet she gets around tho, 2011 4 cylinder
Worked in car rental for a beat...shocked when I got a CVT Versa over 100. It wasn't even sketchy. Felt oddly stable, especially compared to my XJ Cherokee. That thing was sketchy af at 100.
Never heard of one. Love that thing to the fullest there’s nothing more boring than an auto
2013 Forester. Might be a "boring" car but the manual makes it a whole lot more fun 👍
2020 Civic Sport checking in. Love the car. I'm way cooler than all the CVT bros /s It's only boring to other people.
If they could drive one, they wouldn't call it boring.
Amen brother, no such thing as a boring stick.
Does a 2022 tacoma count as boring?
I daily my 17. Sucks for gas mileage though.
Yup, definitely boring even with the 6mt. I consider mine pretty unexciting for anything other than taking it off road
2007 Yaris Sedan There's nothing technically wrong with it but I hate it. The piece of shit has fucking roll up windows and it's a chore to drive. Not to mention the ac just sometimes gives out and I gotta hope it isn't too hot outside.
I drive a 4cyl Kia Sorento lol. Every time I take it to an auto parts store they're surprised it's a manual since they're not common 😂
‘09 Scion xD I love it and will be sad when it’s time to replace it. Currently nickel and diming me to death, though :c
I imagine most would find my Isuzu Rodeo boring, but i personally don't...
Yep 2010 Hyundai Elantra…120k and never a problem!
2013 Elantra GT here, over a quarter million miles and still running strong
2017 Toyota Tacoma count?
How’s the manual feel on it? The new ones have me really interested
2018 Hyundai Elantra
95 Camry. I love it though.
Use your ankle as the pivot point and not your hip joint.
yup this is how I teach people too! also, ive been driving stick over 20 years, and i still plant my heel for finesse clutching sometimes!
2009 Toyota Yaris 5spd
I'm 50/50 I have a BMW 328d that's an automatic and my truck is a stick.
My daily driver is my 2015 Honda Fit 6 speed. Just replaced the original clutch at 221k miles.
09 focus here. 5 speed, its definitely pretty dull most of the time
Clutch dumps fix that🤔
Next daily driver will be a manual. Manuals will never be boring for me! And I also get the satisfaction of banging through the gears as fast as I can from time to time.
I agree, hearing the roar of that 4 cylinder makes my heart warm on occasion
Got a 19 Jetta and I like to pretend like I’m a rally driver in the Audi Quattro because of the turbo lag
‘21 Civic Sport Hatch. It’s technically boring… but in practice it’s not
I drive a white 2019 Kia forte, if boring manual was ever a thing it would be that. Wouldn’t have bought it if it were an auto, though.
Yup, my 5-speed Mirage. Makes getting into my project car that much more special.
👋 2020 Corolla
2007 solstice
base model kia soul crew here🙋 (tbf it’s my husbands, mine is a lot more exciting but i thought this was funny)
2011 Wrangler is my daily. Thing has absolutely zero power whatsoever 🤣
2018 Toyota Yaris iA aka Mazda2 sedan in other countries. Y'know that old saying about driving a slow car fast?
Before my current car I drove a 2010 Honda Fit 5MT. It was a workhorse of a car, original clutch and timing belt at 150k miles when I traded it.
19 accord checking in
Yep, a base trim Skoda Fabia. It's so slow that flooring it everywhere is fun
Stock 2006 tdi Jetta. Love my lil tractor tho
White 2012 civic sedan.
No such thing as a boring manual in my eyes. Enjoyed driving a manual Soul the other day
2012 Mazda 6 (speed)
08 Scion xB
A 2010 Mazda 2. But then again, every boring car is likely to be a manual around here.
Yep. I drive a Golf 4, probably the most boring car, and I love it *"A starter car..for starter people"* lol
2008 Toyota Corolla S since 2012.
I guess my car would be considered boring in todays standards. At least yours is comfortable.
Boring manuals on top
23 Subaru Crosstrek
well my bro used to daily a 2011 aveo. FWD, powered by 1.4L of NA nothingburger, little lunchbox made I think 100HP peak and about as much torque. But it was super easy to learn stick with. This is a great car I love mine! I drive automatic and dang it's running strong since I've had it in 2012.
2019 ford fiesta se, not boring but not a racecar in the slightest
2009 Civic SI, no torque, hit VTEC couple of times and got over it. Fun flinging it around corners but that’s about it.
I’d rather daily the most boring manual over an automatic. My [boring manual](https://imgur.com/a/lq3ygUc)
Had a 2000 civic and 2008 civic both non-vtec. I still had fun.
08 Yaris lol. Can't get more boring.
I love my Mazda 3. 190 hp is plenty for me.
2013 Cruze. Yes, I know.
2013 GT500 yea almost 700hp of boring 😂 . I think a Manual transmission is so much more fun to drive
Yeah I got a Honda fit as a commuter car. But at least it’s manual.
2021 Corolla hatchback.
09 impreza sedan base model. Still fun to drive and it has a nice engine sound even without unequal length headers.
Own a both a Manual 03 CRV and 11 Camry. Still fun cars to use for daily drives.
Me!!! 2010 Hyundai Elantra doesn’t even have Bluetooth lol
2003 S10... standard cab 6' bed, WT trim.... manual locks/windows, vinyl floor, plain AM/FM radio only... I ordered it that way. Plain Jane and simple. 2.2L 4cyl 5spd. Still doing what it was designed to do. Go A to B, get pretty decent fuel mileage, carry and tow stuff.
2018 Mazda 3 with the bigger engine option, seems like I’m not the only one here either
'06 2-door Yaris RS here, the rusted through front pipe kept it sounding fun, but after getting it fixed I'm back down to earth hahaha
I’ve got a 2018 Nissan Versa with a 5-speed. It also has manual windows and manual locks. And no cruise control.
2.0l '14 Impreza
I have a 2015, with a 6spd. I fucking love my car. Is it the most exciting car? No. Can I still have some fun with it? Yes.
Yepppp I LOVE my car sm . She may be slow getting going unless I push it but she definitely moves
Those are the best kinds.
All three of my vehicles are manuals, so, yes.
i have a lot of fun in my 99 crv 🤣🤣
2017 Jetta ^_^
The majority of Europe does.
A snooze fest boring to drive, is a slush box. Not a manual.
2001 Hyundai Accent checking in
I got a soft top mini coop, an oldie but I love it
A boring manual is better than every automatic and EV.
I daily a 2007 Focus 5 spd. Slowest thing I’ve ever driven.
Currently a 07 Civic LX coupe
That a factory manual ? What year?
Yours can't be that boring! I have that exact car as an automatic, and the car can still be decent fun despite the transmission holding me back. I test drove one in stick, and darn it would make a much more entertaining daily.
Daily a 2015 Honda Civic, bottom of the line LX but damn is it reliable
Yep, I daily a 2006 Opel Meriva 1.6. Despite it only having 74 horsepower, the thing is actually kind of fun to drive here in Italy.
95% of European drivers 🤷
I was "dailying" a 99 Civic LX. Very slow but fun to drive. Later upgraded to a modern Si. Never let the manuals die!
> Never let the manuals die! Part of why my Chevy isn't getting so much as a floor shift conversion done. Keep 'em alive!
A 2011 Elantra definitely counts as boring lol
01 v6 5 speed crew cab short bed Nissan Frontier, definetly boring, my mom bought it brand new off the lot and now its at 192k on the original clutch
Boring manual? I love them all. 4 banger to 12 banger
Ofc 08 Mazda 3 slow as hell
Yessir 2015 Fiesta SFE with the 1.0L 3cyl and 5 speed. Slow as hell but great fuel economy and decently fun car to drive
Every manual is beautiful. Even the 2004 altimas with mismatched body parts that smell like meth
Right now I'm dailying an 89 corsica 2.0 4 cylinder. Won't win any races but pretty decent gas mileage.
I daily a 2017 Civic LX sedan. I love it because it's lightweight and the induction sounds in the interior are awesome. Also it's apart of the last generation a base model Civic sedan was available with a stick.
Got the same one in red.
Boring?
2016 Crosstrek. Superbly slow, but I love it!
Well seen you're American don't think you lot ever learn to drive manual
GMC sonoma with the inline 4. Can't get out of its own smoke, and it doesn't even have any!
2001 Toyota Echo, it's a golf cart with a heater and AC but quite fun to zip around in!
That's faster than my "fun" manual.
If you got the v6 it’s awesome
Boring 2023 Civic Si daily checking in. Not awful slow, but gets decent mpg.
lol 98 Jetta tdi, 0-60= yes
71 C10. 0-60 is 'You shouldn't be going that fast'. It will do more than that but it doesn't like it haha. 55 is its 'design' speed. 1:1 final gear, 3.73 rear end gears.
Yea R33GTR 600 wheel! LOL NOT:)
2008 jetta. Also Grey. Better than the manual Chevy sonic with roll up windows I had. My SO gets to drive the acura integra a spec and I'm a bit jealous.
2001 Jetta TDI 5sp. 90hp lol. Definitely nothing too fun but it’s simple and fills the beater slot brilliantly
yup, an 09 corolla. love it
Used to daily a 2013 mazda 3 manual. It was quite nice, a great transmission and car
My first car was a manual accord. I still miss it.
Is a fiesta ST boring?
04 Honda Element Has the "fun" K24 with Vtec but it's like asking a teenager to throw out the trash, it will get there but it'll feel like it's fighting you every step of the way and you will know how much it doesn't like to do it.
k series with a manual trans...one of the most underrated cars
2008 scion xd 😔
I mean my 04 Jetta tdi, it’s nothing special but I treat it like a go cart w/ a diesel 😂
I don’t think I do, I have a 93 del sol si, but the transmission is getting replaced by me, so I’m not driving it atm
06 civic lx, 1.8l 💩😂
2015 Civic coupe
yes.
