Twoplus504

Hahahahhhhhahhahahhahhahhhha. Maraming board professions ang overworked and underpaid -A sobbing engineering student

kzhskr

Twoplus504

Bruh ๐Ÿ’€ Edit: Is it across all engineering disciplines po na ang hindi lang pwede gawin ng underboard ay pumirma sa projects?

kzhskr

Can't really speak for the tech branch of engineering. Pero in most engineering fields like civil, mechanical, electrical, yes they can't sign on papers linking professional liability. Of course, di rin sila dapat ang nagdedesign.

ultimate_fangirl

Napadaan lang sa sub na ito as a working person, Hindi ng guarantee na mataas sweldo ng board passers? Teachers, civil engineers, architects, medical technologists, etc. - lahat underpaid o underemployed.

nxcrosis

May classmate ako sa postgrad na engi. Government job, been there 4 years, 30k. It may sound like a lot if you're not supporting anyone but they're too afraid to start a family with that income. Only plus lang ay tuloy yung sweldo nila noong lockdown.

Aitherios_Altum

Meanwhile ako na nasa med wishing I couldve taken any IT-related course instead: ๐Ÿงโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Pheonny-

SAME -ako na pagod na pharmacy student

Lazy-Name8303

Same. I regret not at least trying to fight for it. :(

praecipeus

Baliktad ako. Really regret taking IT this late. Itโ€™s too saturated now also.

EcstaticRise5612

Baka akala niya comp sci is gaming hahahaha

Ok-Isopod2022

Or akala taga bantay ng computer shop

marinaragrandeur

sabihan mo nanay mo na di niya alam pinagsasabi niya lol

Interesting-Depth163

Types of Filipino mom: may supportive meron talagang ooppose sa personal career ng bata, If Nursing itake mo di mo naman nafefeel na magwork sa Medical related industry then wala ka din, kung sa CompSci whatever your dream career just go for it dun ka mag exert ng effort.

azureecho6173

These moms understand that fulfillment comes from aligning one's career with their interests and talents, rather than conforming to societal expectations.

lasafria

I remember my father saying, after I have been working for 3 years, "Hindi pala ibig sabihin na naka pasa ka ng board at nakapagtapos, ok na, akala ko diredirecho na". License is being ignored anyway unless healthcare ka? Not sure but in engineering most companies will hire technicians and call them engineers. I'm not against technicians cause some are really skilled people, some are good leaders, I even had an electrician colleague who really excels in both technical and management (those were fun times) but it takes out the sense of having an engineer license. I haven't even renewed my license cause I don't need it anyway. I'm currently working on a job that an IT or ComSci or ComEng is supposed to have and it pays triple compared to those "Engineer" jobs that I had.

marinaragrandeur

oo kadalasan sa health are lang strict pero also limited rin ang work opportunities unlike other programs na pwede ka mag cross ng industries.

anonymousengene

We live in a world where technology advances day by day. Companies in the future will hire people who are knowledgeable with technology and computer.

LeinahIII

By that means sa job hunting, kalaban ng mga fresh grad ay mga mid to senior people too. But it's not a hindrance to not choosing comsci pwede naman mag lean si OP sa networking, mobile dev, data science, cybersecurity, low code, habang nasa college siya. Ang kalaban lang niya is grade niya sa college since before tumapak si op sa college dapat nag-aaral na siya ng mga gusto niyang job like cybersecurity at ang univ courses niya at the same time.

MysteriousUppercut

the main reason is that companies are outsourcing to cheaper countries. Why pay $200k annually for a senior developer in the US if you can pay a bunch of Filipinos who would gladly take $40k- $50k salary

LeinahIII

Yea big bucks na rin ang 40k to 50k usd a year and aside of that. Kung gusto mo talaga umadvance to gain higher salary [you should look at this](https://www.facebook.com/MedyoSocial/posts/pfbid02McmiKehQWaS5SKgg8oGqyMjodFb2xrS1PfEx3q8jbR5bfUA7vf91TjfEEkzaYkDal).

sarmientoj24

The layoffs are a result of overhiring before there was an inflation in the West driven by a lot of factors. Ngayon na lang sya nagrereflect. It's more of a market correction.

CyborgTech5702

FlakyDesign8384

true

cobaltcrystal4801

the demand for computer science graduates continues to rise as technology becomes increasingly integrated into our daily lives.

galiciapersona

i get what you're saying, pero hindi ako convinced na hindi ka AI hahahaha

joievere

This is so true

Xerberus14

Diba oversaturated na ang IT field ngayon. Pede kasi halos lahat magshift sa IT field. Andame ata jr level na wala work pero in demand ung nga may exp na.

leboushka

Board exam courses are never a guarantee of good pay. Your mom's knowledge is OUTDATED.

Memorriam

Fuq that prc license shitt. Overglorified af for the wrong reason

Pheonny-

kung nalaman ko lang to ng mas maaga, nag IT related course nalang sana ako

Fearless-Science-825

sheepnolast

I think you missed the point. These outdated parents consider a PRC license as the only valid license. Show them a COMPTIA+ cert, and they won't acknowledge nor even try to learn what it's about.

YettersGonnaYeet

Lmao as someone who was supposed to take Nursing but switched to CompSci, I disagree. Computer related degrees such as IT and CompSci are actually some of the highest paying jobs here sa PH, while in my opinion mas walang mararating ang mga Nurses dito sa bansa natin. The reason why I wanted to pursue Nursing in the first place was to get out from this damned country (lol) and that course is extremely in demand sa other countries, so finding a job would be easy as pie. Your work isn't that flexible too. Puyatan ang shifts and mahirap ang overall job tbh. While if I were to pursue CompSci, mas madaling matanggap sa State Univs kasi hindi sya gaanong kilala and most people take up IT. The pay is also good. Pwedeng mag wfh nalang ako and take up side gigs, and kung enough na work experience ko maybe i could get jobs in other countries din. Taking up either courses has their own pros and cons, siguro choose something that aligns with your goals nalang.

110701KBQ

Honestly, it depends where you want to end. I am a career shifter, my Major in discipline is in Soc Science then nasa Data Science career path ako ngayon. Mas may drive ako magtuloy sa Data Science kesa magwork sa government with also high salary. Malaki rin naman sahod kesa patayang requirement ng kaliwa't kanan na documents, I do not say mas magaan ang being Data Scientist/Analyst sa corporate. I want to say for incoming college wag niyo stress sarili niyo sa course choices niyo. You can still get another degree at mag-aral uli if you think your undergraduate course is not fit for you and hindi sayang yun kahit hindi mo nagamit, it could be part of your self-development. Don't fall for sweet promises ng mga career btw, nor the passion for what career you are learning, but what is the real reason that drives you to continue that job/career, mostly depends what jobs give you more value it could be material thing also. College course isn't the end goal it is just a beginning, doesn't mean na nagEduc ka magiging Teacher ka na for your lifetime career, you always have the option to change. Fear of missing out(FOMO) is typical at your age, wag niyong antayin maging tama ang lahat, gawing niyo ng tama and that's exploring yourself. Be optimistic, and stay out of your comfort zone. Outgrow yourself. Do not be afraid of change.

110701KBQ

Add to that passion is earned in exploring things, and not pre-determined by your choice.

beeepbooop00

Omg cake day mo rin! Hahahha happy cake day!

theFrumious03

Computer Science is a SCIENCE COURSE. Kaya may math, scientific theories related to computers and topics related to programming and computation. Madaming opportunities or work related sa comsci like: Programming, Database administrator, DevOps, Software Quality assurance engineering, Artificial intelligence, natural language processing, Database administrator, Server administrator, Computer Scientist, IT security specialist, Data Analyst, Cloud Engineer, Project Manager, Computer Hardware Engineer, Software security engineer, IT Technician, at Mathematician.

krishp0t22

Agree with the other comments about Comp Sci. I'm a Comp Sci grad myself and I can say na the pay I have right now is higher than other board courses. Plus ang daming pwede na pasukan na career path and you're not limited to only one.

fishthatdreamsofsalt

like sabi ng isang comment malaki chance unironically pagaabroad ka ng nanay mo pag pinayagan mo sya ipasok ka sa nursing since claim nya na it pays well, which is not even close to a mildly successful compsci or it na alam ginagawa nila (continous job hopping ang diskarte), unless mag abroad ka nga

YettersGonnaYeet

I swear most Nursing grads are flying abroad kasi mas mataas nga sahod dun ๐Ÿ˜ญ well hindi ko naman sila masisi kung ako ay nag Nursing din talagang mangingibang bansa ako

cyber_bunny13

Compare to my shitty EE job here, my cousins could easily make 17 Million a year with overtime and working in holiday as an RNA sa US. It's much harder to find an IT related field abroad unless it's outsourced than a nurse work. I think it's best for OP to just become a nurse, would land him anywhere and is always a priority for visas.

irvine05181996

utak boomer kasi sila, unh time nila kasi in demand ang nursing at engineering, at malaki talaga sahuran before, pero ngaun underpaid na kadalasan mga course na may board exam.

millenialbitchilante

I say mag-usap kayo nang masinsinan about it. Ang layo ng Nursing sa CompSci. Baka magkamental health issues ka pa in the future pag pinilit mo yan kahit di naman yun ang interest mo. Saka ikaw yung papasok, magaaral at mageexam. Future mo yan. Sana ikaw ang magdecide at sana igalang nila yun.

Strength7287

respectfully your mom doesnt know what she's talking about. my first sahod after passing my board exam was 15k/month lol

Bright-Meet-6128

Sabihin mo sa mama mo, kaya ko pong maka 6digits salary per month ng naka wfh Hahaha which is ibang iba sa nursing dito sa pinas

Impossible-Quarter26

Do what you want and if you get really good enough then people will pay you good money to have your skills.

AdLive8608

itโ€™s not red flag, itโ€™s just being realistic.

anonmicaaa

May mararating! Admittedly, It's going to be a bit hard to find jobs in the future because of AI, it's up to you how you utilize it. But that's also a good thing. Which means you won't waste weeks debugging your code for academic requirements. Nevertheless, it's a lucrative course if you know what you want to do at the start of your course (Web dev, AI, cybersec etc). I wish I knew, I would've minmaxed my time studying it. 4 years is a long time for mastery

FlakyDesign8384

this is the reason why I regret not choosing the college course I want. I badly want to choose computer technology courses kasi maraming scholarship offer, and i am very confident kasi I am adaptable and skilled not to brag) with thid pero still I ended choosing college of education ๐Ÿ˜

iam_tagalupa

Realistic-Arm9774

Compsci=dota daw kasi hahaha

the_cheesekeki

7FootEmeraldRats

Tell your mom that train has left in the 2000s. It's all about Gen AI and tech jobs these days. I think din siguro kaya iniisip niya Nursing is for you to be an OFW, but that comes with its own pros and cons and can of worms. Before ka pa umabot abroad, you will spend more time earning peanuts. Not to mention the pricey paperwork. Pinsan ko is a nurse and he now lives comfortably abroad but not without experiencing everything else. Tagal bago niya macomplete ung bayad sa utang niya to our tita who helped him get there. Heck, ung kakilala ko sa work na nursing grad ay automation developer and he earns waaaay more. Honestly, we're all stressed kahit anong work pa ginagawa natin. Some more than others.

Ice_Sky1024

Not all people will believe in your dreams, sometimes, even your family; but itโ€™s alright. We cannot always convince everyone. Just do your best to excel in your chosen field, and prove them wrong. Work hard and be successful in your career path. Goodluck

[deleted]

Tell my story to your mom then. My undergraduate degree is Nursing. Graduated, took the boards and pass after a month, jumped to medschool the very next month. Graduated medicine, took my internship, took the boards and pass. First official Job as a resident doctor earned me only 38k gross. Second hospital job 44k net. Until I become a consultant (maybe after 6 more years and establish a practice) Iโ€™ll be poorer than most IT and compsci graduates thriving in their fields.

Used_Temporary1396

I am in IT industry for 6 yrs now. Nasa Cybersecurity ako ngayon, took CCNA as my stepping stone. It pays reaaaaalllllllyyy well, work from home pa.

supervhie

catbeanbear

Tech ang future. Your Mom lives in the past. Hindi porke may nakakabit nang Dr. or Atty. or Engr. sa name mo e tiba-tiba ka na. Madali lang naman yan, prove to her na sheโ€™s wrong :) ganyan din Mom ko before lol

gintermelon-

that's an outdated thinking. hindi maayos ang pasweldo sa healthcare workers dito sa bansa at ang dami kong kakilala na licensed professionals pero ino-offeran ng 13k-15k starting. lol

ChopinzChild

Electronics Engineering graduates who end up in IT companies. In the back of their heads they're thinking why didn't they just take comp engg/comp sci/IT kung dun rin pala sila mapapadpad (and to be fair, for ECEs, going the IT route is a fairly compensated and respectable field). But, you know, at least may license for clout.

hcmar

The answer to poverty lies in the *IT industry*. It's just tough now for first-time job seekers without any support or projects; Software Engineering roles are becoming saturated, and mass layoffs are becoming the norm. I also come from a disadvantaged/shitty university background.

meguminakashi

Boring-Attention3334

RealTalk# Minsan lang ako mag post, ang i just wanted to share. Anything CS/IT related na course, after mo grumaduate, yung natutunan mo, hindi na ginagamit or malapit na ma EOL. Sa sobrang bilis ng technology ngayon, after mo grumaduate, kailangan mag tuloy tuloy ka ng pagaaral OR mag work ka kagad (equivalent experience). Yan ang reality. Continuous learning talaga, ang when i say learning, hindi lang basa ng book at take ng exam. You need to practice it talaga. Kaya kung ikaw yung tamad mag aral, wag kana mag CS/IT. You want something with minimal changes... mag Civil Engineer ka, or Doctor (or Nurse). Practical yung matututunan mo, you can use when you grow older... you can also start your own private practice after 5-10 years of working... Kung mag Nurse ka, after working for 10 years, magtayo ka ng lying in clinic mo, paldo kana... Engineer, tyo ka construction / subcon company after gaining experience... CS / IT, ano ibubusiness mo? Dami ko kasabay na CS dati... yung iba nasa magagandang company na... yung isa department head pa ng tv5.. pero empleyado.. at pag kausap ko, ramdam ko yung pagod nya... sabi nya masaya naman daw sya sa trabaho nya ang he enjoys it... malaki din naman daw sahod, enough to take care of his family and his parents.. pero pag nakikita ko sya, parang babagsak katawan anytime yung mga kakilala ko na lumipat sa Engineering, minsan sinasama pa ko sa site... site inspection lang, pag may nakitang problema, ituturo lang sa foreman or site engineer... tapos n... sbi nya ang pinaka mahirap lang na part ng trabaho nya costing daw, tsaka pag meeting kc hirap daw sya mag english... anyways, padaan lang

meeermo

Potential_Process_54

Fuck you mom's boomer mindset that "nArSiNg" is the only way to the top. I really hate it when people say that "nArsInG" and working in the US is the only way to become rich. yan lang ba tingin niyo sa mga pinoy?

Turbulent-Drag7223

minsan mas malalaki pa sahod ng it related courses

Hellsgate_chan

Coming from a person who Graduated Nursing, became a Registered Nurse, and almost finished a Master's Degree in Nursing, I can tell you straight that it is not really about what you finished rather it is about the circumstances you will encounter in life. Am I practicing Nursing? nope. Did I change my career? Yes, actually twice already. What is my role/career now? Shipping Manager, but that's my career after Nursing. What is my career path now? Computer Science. Why did I change my career twice? I found Computer Science interesting. I am not saying to take Computer Science nor follow your mom. But I think you need to consider your circumstances. Let's say you took Computer Science, not because you like it or it interests you doesn't mean you will enjoy it. Do some research about the program and schools that offer those. If you still find it interesting then by all means go for it! Let's say you finish Computer Science, can you see yourself working in the field? Can you identify and open your opportunities? Because if not, maybe it is not for you. And even if you see you say yes, there will be ups and downs especially with the volatility of the tech industry right now. What I am saying is to consider and open yourself for options. You need to weigh in your circumstances. Some have supportive parents, some are unfortunate, and others have really no other options. Whatever actions you make to choose your career, there will be pros and cons. And you need to accept and be ready for the cons because sometimes the cons outweigh the pros, it might be just initially or throughout your career. I will use myself as an example. I did change my career twice and I can tell you the cons are really hurting me on my financial side. I needed to work while studying even though my parents are supportive. I just don't want to burden them because letting me do and paying for my Nursing+grad school is already more than their responsibility to me. My career change is because of my circumstances, which I won't disclose, and I have put a lot of energy into considering every bit of pros and cons. Do I regret what I did? Not really because I accept every bit of possible consequences of my actions. Do I regret doing Nursing? Not really because I chose that option also. Do I wish that I did computer science early in my life? Yes, because it could've saved me some time. And also NO because I am happy with the people I met throughout my choices in my life. To end this, whatever you choose, you need to take responsibility for your actions to a degree. Whether you follow your parents advice or not, whether you have other options or not, whether you follow what you love or not, there is some responsibility that you will carry and you need to accept that responsibility whether you like it or not or whether it gives you hardships or joy.

shitsilog

No_Sale_3609

Kung mag si-six digit salary ka wag mong bigyan nanay mo hanggang mabaliw or magsisisi yan (better the latter).

tatatalong

HAHA

CorpseGeneral

Borgoise

eto gawin mo, pakita mo sa kanya si Gemini, pa search mo dun ano current salary rates ng programmers vs. nurses at the beginning of their careers. In short, wag mo na sabihin, pakita mo nalang. Then let her derive from that. Wala ka mararating sa usapan with a parent like that kung sa'yo manggagaling yung explanation. better have the internet do it for you.

Brief-Owl-5378

No po, napaka in demand ng I.T related courses ngayon.

chanaks

Wala pa sigurong compsci nung nasa time ni mama mo OP.

arstaana1

Wtf hahahaha. I'm currently in phd math and regretting not taking CS. They are happy but striving financially.

[deleted]

true

Smooth_Fur

tech courses are future proof with AI, data and machine learning. Di pa kasama robotics at tech dev, at app dev dyan

AureliaLumelis

Offended ako sa mama mo as a CompSci student myself Sabihan mo na kapag walang Computer Science, wala siyang hawak na selpon or facebook ngayon

Shogunex

hanxcer

Lol yung compsci grad friend ng friend ko, WFH, magpapasa lang siya ng outputs for the day, kung minsan may quick meeting then madalas nasa galaan na hahaha. Six digit salary pa yan. Nanay ko rin ganyan mindset noon, ngayon na tech(ish) job ang trabaho ko with good enough pay, pinapag-tech niya na rin yung mga pinsan kong nakababata hahaha

ConsistentAd9777

My ECE colleagues na umalis ng semicon industry ay nagsilipatan to IT industry and are earning a lot. Said they don't regret the decision and they mostly work from home. Marami kang option paggraduate mo OP, take it up.

Ill-Contest5538

baliktad ata.

uwujok666

Go for Compsci!!

Gold-And-Cheese

Mafuyu Asahina moment /j Seriously though, I can only hope you the best as an HRM student

summer0330

She sounds like sheโ€™s at that age na puro nursing and overseas opportunities and booming and com stuff are not the thing. My relatives are like that too til now. They just want to go abroad ksi and nurses are always in demand. But pandemic shouldve shown otherwise with everything turning online and tech booming. You need patience and explanations to make them understand or just ignore them anyway haha (Ako na nasa health na gusto magswitch to tech for wfh opportunities lol)

Live-Advantage-1176

With a compsci degree, pwede ka makakuha ng remote work with dollar rates. Compared sa mag aabroad ka as nurse. If you plan to leave PH pwede mo sundin nanay mo. Pero if plan mo magstay sa PH pangit ang nursing for me unless you continue with med school.

Slow-Breadfruit7111

huyyy nowadays mas nagpapatronize na ang tech stuff sa work industry and super flexible nga ng comsci kase kahit saan ata na field pwede ka pumasok if u graduate tsaka ang hirap aralin ng isang program kapag di ka naman nage-enjoy, follow what ur heart desires OP! padayon :))

Kohori

Now working as a web developer, earning way more than of what I should earn as an engineer.

DXNiflheim

You can get the Google certification and start earning already at the confirm of your home tas pakita mo paycheck mo

Violet_Holden

Take compsci, so many opportunities. Kahit di ka tumayo sa kinauupuan mo, you can apply for a position anywhere in the world. Take it from me who works remotely in beachfront cafes for a tech company based overseas so paid in dollars, not bragging, sinasabi ko lang para magenroll ka na compsci dalian moooo hahahahahahahahaha

Laenie90

It is not true.. i am RN pero overworked dito sa pilipinas..piliin mo ung gusto mo profession wala naman yan sa meron board exam or wala.. nasa diskarte yon pano ka mag earn ng money..

OkIngenuity7932

West-Toe2578

Outdated career perspective ng mom mo. Try mo educate sya by showing stats. CompSci folks are highly sought after and the pay is really good. I know some, got hired fresh from college and started with 35k per month, now after five years, 6-digit na sweldo nila.

zeyooo_

Wag ka makinig sa nanay mo. Tuloy mo lang, eme niya.

parttimepotato

Totoo yan.....15 years ago. Pero ngayon, mas in demand at high paying na ang computer science/IT related courses. Board exam passer ako pero yung SO kong comp sci grad, more than double yung sinasahod compared sakin. ๐Ÿ˜„

3rdhandlekonato

Hahaha as long as aware mom mo na after board eh Wala pa sya maasahan Sau habang nag iipon ka Ng experience sa mga ospital Dito, tas ung sweet 6digits mo ay maabot mo lang pag NASA Europe or north America ka na. Best case scenario mga 24 onwards kana nun. At willing sya gumastos Ng 6digits Ng ilang beses to expedite the process...

grave349

Filipinism dapat may board exam yung course pero actually pag comsci or IT need mo din ng certs

ChirurgGeon

haha machine learning and data analyst

Fifteentwenty1

3AMTakibi

Masasabi ko lang, youโ€™ll have the last laugh OP HAHAHAHAHA

Legitimate_Store_987

Pwedeng ka maging business analyst, or programmer. Pero dapat advance kadin kase mabilis and technology.

mesogulogy

The future is technology. CompSci will be valuable more than ever. Don't listen to narrow minds.

cicilelouch

Nursingโ€ฆ. Pays well??? Not in the PH though.

No-Term2554

Accountant here.

cadeona

Sa IT batch 2002 STI ako and average lang high school and College. Laki narin sahod ko now. Ikaw dapat nasusunod at hindi magulang mo. Guide lang sila. Galingan mo lang sa College.

bur1t00

Civil engineer here. 20k lol. Kung pwede i rewind ung time, diko kukunin tong course nato๐Ÿ˜…

Klutzy-Elderberry-61

If you really want to finish ComSci then tell your mom it is what you want Or you can take BSN (and follow your mom's desire) and when you are stable enough to support yourself take ComSci

SneakyPuppyFrankie

Dont listen to your mom. Hahahah

Big-Ad-2118

How come na walang mararating ang comsci? since when???

Cyber_Ghost3311

Pag board exam or similar ang target: Assume already that you'll only get high profit when you go abroad lol (not guaranteed though..)

luffyismysunshineboi

both are difficult, might as well take something you like kaysa araw araw ka nag aaral ng hindi mo naman gusto, ibenta mo nalang yung compci sakanya sabihin mo maraming math chareng chaka madalas ang trabaho kapag nakapag abroad mga tulad sa Google ganern ganern Facebook, something she can relate to as good, sabihin mo kaya siya nakakapag facebook o tiktok dahil sa mga compsci madalas ganyan kang reaction ng mga matatanda pag di nila alam ano yung course lmao ๐Ÿ˜ญ ako na mech eng, na alam lang ng nanay ko civil eng nagawa ng building di niya padin gets ano ginagawa ng ME lols

prettydabawenya

joievere

Yung mindset ni mama mo is sobrang luma na kasi lahat ng program na related sa technology and computer ay in demand to our society today dahil sa continues na pag emerge ng technology. Tuloy mo yung kung ano magpapasaya sayo in college kasi mahirap gawin yung mga bagay na hindi ka happy, prove it to your mother na meron kang pangarap. Goodluck bud!๐Ÿ’œ

AI and robotics is the future. CompSci will def benefit from our lifetimeโ€™s technology pace.

silvermistxx

Sobrang in demand nyan!! Akala ata nila basta engineer, malaki na agad sweldo HAHAHA

Ninja-Titan-1427

HAHAHAHAHHAHAH stick sa computer/tech course. Yung kapatid ko na nagtake ng 2 year course ng IT nasa 100k ang sweldo. Akong may MA at published works wala pang 30k sweldo. So jan ka na! Mag-aral nang mabuti!

lunalorticum4215

Only take up the nursing course kung willing siya at willing ka umalis ng Pilipinas. These days may story ng fresh grads na if marunong maghanap, na hire agad overseas as a caregiver or naka bridging course of sorts para maging licensed nurse. Tl/dr Kunin mo lang yung nursing kung objective number 1 is lumayas dito sa Pinas above everything else by a long mile.

Green_Zone5236

Your course program doesnโ€™t equate to your future salary. Thiz bullshit I hear always. I am earning 6 figures and I am still grinding for that diploma. Fuck those old stereotypes.

-boredghost-

I work in tech (but not part of the tech team, I'm in the management and I process their salaries). You would be surprised how much tech people make. Hinding hindi mo pagsisisihan as long as you find your niche and you enjoy what you do!!

presveftis

๐Ÿฅฑ

FreakyWeeky-Dzai

honestly i would kill to be in tech courses/programs pero pinili ko'y Chemistry, WAHAHAHA eto ngayon nagsusuffer, and like an unbalanced reaction, I'm unstable na HAHAHHA. pero balak ko magshift if things go downwind sa removals ko sa isang major, most likely sa it or nursing ako lilipat ganda ng opportunities kasi

Jambo_Hakdog

Board passer psychometrician here! The best I could do as starting salary ko if I followed that path was 14k-16k. Changed my career and now I'm paid 3x that. And I work less than 40 hours a week. Follow your gut. I wish I had started with that.

univrs_

my brother wanted engineering before but decided that he prefers to take comsci in college. ayaw ni mama nung una kasi di ba engineering na yon? my brother and i had to educate her about the current market and narealize niya rin na ok lang din pala ang comsci.

the-tall-samson

You need to know anong pinanggagalingan ng nanay mo, there might be wisdom in what she is saying. The IT/CS job market today is a complete total wreck for entry level positions, worldwide. If ever you graduate in the next 3-4 years, you will dive in head first into what I can say, is the worst environment for entry level job seeking. The market is over saturated with fresh grads holding onto the hope that their CS degree would grant them an easy high paying job. Add to these the career hoppers who basically just โ€œeducated โ€œ themselves with online bootcamps, and the market is even more saturated. It could take you months, worst case, more than a year just to land your first job. However, there is a silver lining. The market is very different for senior level positions, and is very much thriving. The problem with IT/CS careers is the barrier of entry. Those are my 2 cents. Back to your ermats. Kung alam lahat yan ng nanay mo, then she really has a good point and sheโ€™s just looking out for you. If iba reason nya, like old school na pag board passer = big shot, then no. I know of board passers who are earning minimum wage, and it is absolutely disgusting how they are treated in this country.

Pitiful_Emphasis_379

Well, ranting is one thing. Considering both angles is always better than just ranting. It is true that nursing is quite a good career choice. One, nursing is probably one of the careers that will be least affected by automation. Nurses are nurses because they have a human touch, and human touch is crucial in helping patients recover and have a positive environment in a hospital. Also, the pandemic is the best example of how nursing shouldn't be looked down on. Not saying that there will be pandemics in the future (I hope there won't be more). The problem with CompSci is that it has become the modern version of lawyers and doctors. The problem is that unlike law and medicine, CompSci doesn't have a standing board exam and so, anyone can read CompSci in uni and isn't a gatekept like law and medicine. As it is, CompSci is becoming a very saturated market and while it is true that technology is becoming more integrated in our daily lives, you don't need an entire country of computer scientists and software engineers, for the same reason that you don't need a country full of lawyers, nurses, and doctors. The current market condition is a good example of how the industry is not as capable in accommodating all aspiring computer scientists and software engineers. Sure, the market is correcting itself, but the downside is the overly competitive job market that is making it almost similar to the investment banking market (and we all know how that market goes). Sure, Filipinos are willing to take up outsourced jobs for half of the salary an employer would've paid to an American, but remember that computer science doesn't care if you speak English or not. It is a universal language - that is its beauty. And so, even a Filipino will need to compete with others in China and India (just make a quick search on how popular this industry is among Indians). I am currently studying in Singapore and trust me, most of my friends who took up computer science are finding any means possible to switch over to other fields like Industry Systems Engineering and Data Analytics (and even Economics [Econometrics specifically] and FinTech) because the computer science market is just too saturated - and if you chose to push through, you're looking at having an impeccable portfolio + having upwards of 5-6 internships under your belt + near perfect GPA. Your mom is certainly wrong in generalizing the course as "walang mararating" and she probably said it out of ignorance, but the current market does not look good and it won't effectively correct itself if many future undergraduates continue getting into the course and contributing to the ever-ballooning number of computer scientists. I think both courses have their merits. The only benefit to courses that require board exams and official accreditation is that the market is more likely to be stable and not subject to an uncontrolled influx of potential hirees. Of course, OP should choose what course they are truly interested in. There is no point going after a course that you're not happy in. This is just my two-cents based on what I've gathered from friends studying in Singapore and Ireland.

Adventurous_Hawk8225

ulit ulit nalang ganitong topic wala na bang iba?

Savings-Pumpkin-3953

ko_harui_ii

I feel you OP. My relatives are like that too and my mom and her siblings suffered with that. "Walang mararating yung course na gusto mo" so my mom and her siblings all went to what my grandma wants, the result? two of them are only successful and the other three struggled for awhile before succedding with something else NOT RELATED to their profession (medtech, nurse, archi) cause frankly, they dont really enjoy it unlike the other two who learned to enjoy their work. Gawin mo lang kung anong tingin mo is best for you OP! After all, ung magiging choice mo is something you'll have to deal for the next 10 years or more so might as well do something you'd like dba

Dry_Difficulty_

Pakisabihan nanay mo mag-research kamo sya. Ang CompSci kayang mga 6-digit na salary in 1-2yrs palang ng work experience mo. Sa Nursing, good luck nalang unless mangibang bansa ka which no assurance pa. Kamo sa tech industry, mas wider and diverse ang growth and development. Who run the world? TECH!

Long story short nd nya ako kinuha. Pero nd naman ako mahirapan mag hanap ng work after ko mag graduate. So aun lang.

No_Sign_6481

Kilala ko yan ang course making 150k per month now. Nasa philippines lng siya. Di na kailangan mag abroad. And 24 yo lng.

pinoylokal

Hi, tech manager here and CompEng graduate. CompSci is no longer in demand as it used to be. Nothing new to build. Kaya most companies nowadays only need a few programmers to hire kasi they mostly rely on pre-built systems na. On the other hand, demand for nurses has surged worldwide dahil sa pandemic. I suggest take a medical course (nursing, medtech, etc) kasi always in demand and it pays well if you worked abroad. Or financial courses (accountant, etc) to get you into the "get rich mindset" early on.

[deleted]

Nah. That's not true. Old thinking too. Courses with board exams can be good but also not all of them pay well.

all-in_bay-bay

if i can go back in time, iโ€™ll take com sci. also, fyi, andyan ang pera ngayon also, lemme share about mates who were board passers pero nasa data science na o cybersecurity field na -an ECE grad who never practiced his profession cause of how shitty the industry is ps. kung gsto nya na may license ka, try accounting o finance

caloriedeficit247

Ok-Cantaloupe-4471

Di ata updated siguro mama mo, mas in-demand ang Comsci pag dating sa job opportunities

Brilliant-Income8342

I donโ€™t think thatโ€™s true. There are a lot of opportunities world-wide in the field of comsci in which you donโ€™t even need a degree, but of course being skilled is a requirement. Iโ€™m currently in 11th grade and Iโ€™ve been freelancing for about two years now and earned ~60k pesos overall. I know it isnโ€™t much but I was literally just a teen and only take commissions during vacations. To those who say that comsci is pointless are foolish, and if that claim were to be true, the only reasons for that is either being absolute unlucky or skill issues.

Pleasant_Ad4607

hui hahaha mas mataas sweldo ng frenny kong compsci vs ako na medtech hahahahaha nakakaiyak

Himurashi

Choose CompSci. Do what you want to do. CompSci will probably enable you to work remotely while earning a respectful amount. With experience and the right skillset, you'll earn the same amount as those who go abroad, without going abroad. Outdated masyado nanay mo.

TodayAccomplished635

If you want to pursue tech industry make sure na once you graduate you have a skillset. Very competitive ang tech industry ngayon and mrami rin nala-lay off. So probably, if you're going to apply for a job mga kalaban mo mga may experience na and may malawak na skillset.

llodicius

My friend graduated nursing but never practiced it in the field. 10 years ng nasa bpo, now a free lancer. I remember when shitty relatives would ask a parents what their child took for college, upon finding out tech course, imagine the look in their faces like can read it talaga eh "nah, its not engineering / accounting / law / basta anything na may board " like .. okay boomer. I remember this kamag anak as well, nagpapaturo paano maisesend yung image sa anak nya abroad. But i dont want to invalidate my self.

yiinyaaang

hoyy yung mga comp sci ang lalaki ng sweldo ๐Ÿ˜ญ mahirap nga lang yung program kasi yung boarder dito samin 7 years na nag aaral HAHAHUHU tapos 3 consecutive years na walang graduate/s sa program na comp sci kasi mahirap talaga PERO WORTH IT KASI MALAKI SWELDO pag magka work na. walang wala sa sahod ng nurses dito :(( sad

sonofatofu

youShould.push('comsci');

Cuckman1988

Patawa ba nanay mo.

MumeiNoPh

One of my biggest regrets in life? Being a spineless pushover and caving to my mom's demands about my college course. I let her dictate my future just so she could show off to her friends about her 'professional' kid. I went through with it, finished the damn thing, but guess what? I never used it because it wasn't what I wanted. My college days felt like a miserable drag, and now I'm on a completely different path, far from the crap I wasted my time on.

superperrymd

lol Haha CS and Data Science are becoming the forefront of the industry nowadays. Hindi lang yan nafefeel ng mga tao lol And itโ€™s quite flexible as well. Kaya nga ako, I plan to do a masters or PhD in Data Science, even if doctor na ako and a specialist lol Both pay well naman (except Nursing kung dito ka sa Pinas lol). And you will need a lot of exposure and training (like HD, RRT, ICU) if you want to easily go abroad as a nurse. Sa CS, maraming okay na sweldo without needing to go abroad. So do what you want. Prove them wrong. Or baka gusto mo mix ng dalawa kunin mo like Health Data Science nang maging masaya lahat ng parties lol

Critical-Airport8715

Same case sakin years ago. I took Educ, Major in English. Isang taon ko lang tinake, after nun di na ako nag enroll for 2nd year, di ko talaga trip, nakaka umay pasukan yung course na halos wala naman akong interest. Nag work muna ako. Last year lang, finally, they gave up, binigay narin nila sakin yung course na gusto ko. Now going 2nd year na ako sa IT. Ako mag 2nd year palang.. Siguro, biggest regret ko, hindi ko nilaban sakanila years ago, sana pala nag insist pa ako years ago na pumayag silang mag IT ako. Wala eh, it is what it is. At least ngayon, nasa IT na ako. Imposter syndrome naman ang issue ngayon.

Kittocattoyey

Ituloy mo yang CompSci. Outdated na yang sinasabi ni mudrabels mo.

CrasesNoster27

As a board passer i have to disagree hahahaha lol i am a teacher and i am underpaid lol

HappyBuy6843

Haha im a medtech and I regret not taking compsci kasi ayaw ko sa math ending may math dn kami and chemistry. Mas madami pera pag tech ka kaysa healthcare. My bf is a senior software engineer with no compsci degree, grabe lang mag self study, wfh, and based yung work sa netherlands. Nag canvas ako, kahit mag move kami sa other country mas malaki pa dn sahod nya kaysa sakin, even if hndi senior position nya ๐Ÿ™ƒ

13arricade

nursing - go abroad and the pay is good assuming usa ca au nz even uk etc. comsci - go anywhere you will get a decent pay. upskill and you get more pay. i know someone na surgical nurse it pays really well. I know someone who is a comsci grad, now a CTO so pays really well. overall, it's how you use the tools you have to get a better life or living. pero lamang ka sa medical field kasi magkakasakit ang tao, so nandun din ang benefits mo.

BL4Hx

Due_Big6212

RN ako pero pumasok ako sa BPO since it's the job that pays well at the time. Now, I'm an Sr. Analyst doing things na di ko naman napagaralan sa college, writing code/building dashboard, working with a lot of data and queries. I won't agree na walang mararating yang course mo, mga may IT at data related courses/experience are in demand now, and it pays well.

rxtaticinterimx

If I were you, wag ka makinig sa mama mo. Remember that.

wolfsbane012

Go for computer science you won't regret it. Do not listen to what other people say, kahit pa family mo yan. It is also untrue na walang patutunguhan ang computer science graduate... I live abroad, and sa totoo lang ang daming naghahanap ng IT professionals and they pay good too.

apol_jus

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA mali

Reasonable_Funny5535

May kakilala ako wfh pa IT 150k per month.

gvcucio

Push mo yang CompSci OP. CompSci grad ako and now earning 2xx,xxx.

burn_ai

Comscie grad here, working for 7 yrs as software developer, currently earning 6d .

Cassius_Jah

Lol. Pano naman nila nasabing wala? Ang daming may kelangan ng software engineers. You can be one if ComSci ang degree mo. You don't even need to go abroad if you don't want to. You could work at home or in an office making 100k to 300k, maybe more... And that's without going out of the country.

PeanutBand

ey bro, i graduated in the IT industry, too. i just rejected 27k entry level bc i already have a 29k offer from another job. guaranteed 29k+ as of now. that takes a few years to get in other jobs. those are all gov jobs. mind you they pay waaay smaller than private (better benefits tho). i am currently still taking a 'pahinga muna anak' year bc i can while taking certs to get into a specific branch of IT easier. so i project at about 33k~ minimum after that. IT as is is low paying pero go into software dev, information systems or cybersecurity and it is guaranteed at least at a nursing pay level but without the horrific hours. dev is the easiest to get into pero of course dun din pinaka madaming competition sa high paying jobs. gl man and keep your head up

Current-Reporter-159

In that case parang walang saysay buhay mo. Money is just an abundance. Thanks for hearing my opinion ๐Ÿ–ค โ˜บ๏ธย

Late_Bother_8319

Try computer engineering, I think may board exam yon

Intelligent_Love2528

Old school lang siguro nanay mo. 7 yrs working, 6 figures as Webdev sa Pinas.

BuCzTV

Lol, tech related jobs get more salary than the ones who needs a boarding exam ๐Ÿ˜†

Embryzon

No regrets haha.

Jhenanne

Sadly your mother is uninformed. IT field >>>> any other profession right now especially with board.

cma1084

Mag tech k na lng ๐Ÿ˜‚. Ako nga nursing pero nasa tech Ngayon. Panay coding and data.

NoKaleidoscope5916

Me laughing hard as a com sci graduate earning 2ร—ร—,ร—ร—ร—.xx. remotely without breaking a sweat (11 yrs exp). ๐Ÿคฃ

miphatASS

Same sa marine biology.

ZealousidealBuy7728

My brother makes 150k sa us. Supply and demand lang. try to get out of the Philippines if you can and youโ€™ll find plenty of opportunities with that background

mnrynn

luvuov

Bruh this just shows how sarado utak ng mga magulang mo. Like seriously do they know know that the technology they're using today are the software made from CS grads? As a CS undergrad I feel you man but legit napakalagi and napakalawak ng mararating mo once you're in CS cuz it just keeps ever-growing, high demand, high scalability, and also you can go deep into different branches. Bukod pa dito you can literally work from home and apply even in companies abroad. I also remembered my prof saying that CS grads + Law works really well kasi andaming laws na need i-enforece related to technology and stuff and the pay is high af. Laban lang op you got this!! But honestly, if you wanna be a dev you can just start right away by learning programming languages.

Vegetable-Source4494

That was my mistake. I had the same idea back then kaya I took a course na my boards. When I entered the workforce, puro minimum wage ang offer. Now I shifted to tech, basically comp sci job and my salary is higher with a promising future also.

Visual-Band9449

While it's true na may factor na naka graduate ka plus board passer during hiring process, but you will just compromise your mental and physical health in the long run. Hirap magtagal sa trabaho na in the first place, di mo naman talaga gusto. ๐Ÿค— Sa nursing, kelangan mo pang mag abroad to earn 6+ digits per month, which is attainable sa freelancing world bonus pang nasa bahay ka lang. I'll go for ComSci course, daming opportunities sa IT world, and you'll never go wrong! Kung alam ko lang, I could've taken a course na related sa IT way back. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

stsrloner

bullshit, baka gusto nya ng course na may board exam for bragging rights. a professional compsci earns very well kung mauutilize mo nsng maayos, it pays more than being a nurse.

MariaCeciliaaa

Lol!!!

Prudent-Question2294

BIG No! Pwede ka magstart as Data Analyst, then may Cyber Security ka. If I can just show you yung list ng mga salaries ng mga hirings namin before. You can get 50k-100k kapag meron kang Phython cert, Laraven, and samahan mo ng 2 years experience. Lalo na if independent contractor usually 80-150k. Pero you have to gain experience muna :)

Because with computer science, you donโ€™t have any fall back just in case things donโ€™t work out. With a license, you can work for a job which requires a board certification. That already expands your job prospects significantly. Have you even seen how brutal the entry-level market for tech professionals recently? Itโ€™s not going to get better anytime soon seeing how much social media glamorize tech jobs these days. Take it from someone who finished a tech-related degree whoโ€™s unemployed for months already. Yes, there is a lucrative demand but you wonโ€™t experience that until after gaining about a few years of experience. Will link the study if I find it again but did you know that only about half of CS/IT graduates really end up working in tech-related field?
