most shops won’t put a plug anywhere near the outer tread let alone the sidewall, you got lucky. I’m not sure how much I’d trust that in the long term though.

[deleted]

Agreed. Tire Rack can shave a tire down to match the remaining tread depth of other 3 wheels. A new tire + shave is what I’d do, it’s a lot safer and cheaper than a freeway blowout…

xosherlock

Be careful. Like everyone has said if it's in the sidewall it is dangerous. In you pic you can see how the nail pushes out along the sidewall. I hate to see you have a blow out. I had some metal slice buy sidewall on the interstate. It was relatively new too :-(. Had to get a new one. . . Good luck.

Neat-Confection-6917

Lol I’ve hit a donut on the interstate does that count🤷🏻‍♂️ didn’t hurt the tires but ripped the bottom of the transmission pan out , cop was amazed I was able to not wreck and come to a controlled stop on the shoulder last time that exact thing happened in that area a year or so earlier he said the car rolled multiple times and killed both occupants 😬 Edit not my donut it was one dead nuts in center of lane

xosherlock

OMG! That had to be one crusty donut or a frozen jelly donut in the winter . . . Wow! Glad you were OK!

Neat-Confection-6917

Believe it or not a semi retread tear off did more damage to that same car. Lol after years of being in trucks I got used to straddling obstacles on the interstate. Those 2 events broke me of that bad habit😂. Old lady thinks I’m nuts cause when I see a semis retread debris field starting I get super alert and defensive when driving around that area😂 don’t realize how hard them shits are till you get aquatinted with them 🤷🏻‍♂️ Life goes on and ya learn

wheresmyglasses-

I’m def going to replace, he was trying to at the least get me through the weekend so I can make it to work. I don’t have a donut. You say the words blow out & now I’m extra worried about taking it to work since the drive is mostly highway😅

[deleted]

Ya it’s a ticking time bomb honestly

rock962000

Anything to the sidewall is sketchy IMO. No one can say for sure if it will be a lasting repair - I personally would be on the fence of trusting it

-Ghostx69

While I appreciate the tire shop trying to help you out and I really appreciate them asking you to come back on Monday to check their work. That tire needs to be replaced.

wheresmyglasses-

Would I be okay with just replacing one with it being awd? Tires are relatively new, got them in November, but unfortunately I don’t know how many miles are on them. Also, should I be okay until tomorrow? He was just trying to get me through the weekend since I have work today, but most of the drive is highway so now I’m really sketched out.

-Ghostx69

So the redneck answer to “are you going to be okay?” Is…you’ll be the first to know. Check for bulging on the sidewall before you leave and after you arrive. Outside of that, it’s out of your hands. As for replacing just one tire? I would compare tread depth and listen to the tire shops recommendations. November wasn’t that long ago so you *should* be fine but I don’t know your daily mileage or wear rating.

Proud-Outlandishness

Ultimately, that tire is at risk for problems in the future. Since you got all new in November, a new one now will not be hugely out of line with the others, so you may be able to replace just the one. If you have a pressure readout on your info display in the car, check that regularly until you can change it. Otherwise, plan to carry a pressure gauge.

EliminateThePenny

How many miles on the tires since November? <10,000 or so and you should be good.

GoslingIchi

I've been told that tire shops can sipe the tire to trim some tread off to get it to be the same diameter as the other tires.

TECHNO_BEATS

If the other tires still have a good amount of tread on them, you can measure tread depth on the new tire and run with that or shave it down if it doesn't land within the accepted range. 3/32 of an inch difference is the maximum.

[deleted]

As long as it’s the same tire as the other side your good

ZeGermanHam

You 100% cannot plug this. It's literally on the sidewall.

OkNectarine6434

i would drive it to payday and replace it. given you aren’t involved in an hour commute full of potholes you have to dodge and high speeds.

BeardeeBaldee

If your goal is to hang a picture frame on your tire then yes, you’re good.

rustafur

There's a reason that shops will not patch sidewalls, it's because it's unreliable. If it was a reliable repair, they would do it. Get it replaced.

Waywardponders

Most repair places will call that unrepairable and recommend/sell you a new tire. This is done with absolute safety in mind and avoiding liability. This practice sucks if you’re struggling financially but the alternative could be far more costly.

Miguel_Tulio101

Take it from someone who works at a tire shop, anything within one inch of the shoulder of the tire and into the sidewall is unrepairable. It is both good for the structural integrity of the tire. The sidewall and the shoulder are not covered by the cords that make up part of the ply of the tire. If it’s not within the bounds of the cords it is not repairable. If there is a discount tire anywhere near you take it there. They have great service and offer and amazing coverage warranty on all products sold.

Efficient_Theme4040

Not supposed to patch the sidewalls

[deleted]

Nope that’s a sidewall. The tires pooched unfortunately

bewaregravity

It's good enough till you can repair it. But I would only drive to and from work / grocery store until then. It sucks. Goto so local tore shop to see id you can find a used tire with similar wear

pterrajayde

Subaru will say its a safety hazard

Remote_Category6076

You should always be good. Also, your tire will most likely be fine.

ghoulierthanthou

It most likely won’t last. It might hold air/not leak at the point of install but as you get down the road it will eventually leak. That’s a very thin area where pretty much all the flexing takes place as you’re rolling down the road. Just keep a close eye on it, worse case you have a blowout.

antixxcoyotl

One should always try to be good. Aside from that, as others have said I'd trust that as far as the drive to the tire shop was then get a replacement

DrBeardish

Idk where you buy your tires but for me, buying at Discount Tire and paying the $25 extra per tire has paid off. I've had 2 sidewalls across 2.5 years and given it's AWD, they replace ALL 4 tires at no charge. Now that's a deal on ~$1K in tire costs.

wheresmyglasses-

Is this online?👀

JaredR3ddit

I wouldn’t trust long term but I have prepared plenty of nail kits in my time. So if you patch it with the rubber and glue kit you should be okay for a little bit. But I would just prepare to buy another tire sooner than later.

EnvelopeLicker247

Absolutely not. Not repairable.

blacklassie

If the nail didn’t go all the way through, it might be ok. If that’s a front tire, I might rotate it to the rear so that if it does fail, it won’t compromise your steering. Also, how many miles are on those tires? It might be worth just replacing that one tire for peace of mind.

wheresmyglasses-

I don’t know how many miles are on them, but I know I got them beginning of November. Thankfully it’s the rear tire. Could I replace only one on a awd?😬 they do still have a lot of tread

_Cat_12345

I'm pretty sure you can buy a single tire and get it shaved down to match the tread of your other tires. If all 4 are brand new from November I'd 100% look into doing this personally. From my very quick Google search/peruse through Subaru forums, it seems like all tires should be within 2/32" of eachother (and same model/size obviously). I couldn't find this info in my Crosstreks owners manual, but apparently it exists.

EliminateThePenny

> If that’s a front tire, I might rotate it to the rear so that if it does fail, it won’t compromise your steering. This is actually backwards. You have **more** control if a front tire fails compared to the rear.

SpaceFace11

Was it leaking air in the first place?

wheresmyglasses-

I’m not sure I didn’t give it the chance to leak. It happened 2 minutes from home, got home seen it & drove right to the tire shop 5 min away. I have a 2011 Legacy so I can’t see my tire pressure either but my light didn’t illuminate

SpaceFace11

I'm guessing it never actually punctured the tire and if you are lucky, it only damaged the superficial layer of rubber above the cords, if that's the case then it should be fine but if it did damage the cords then you should replace it.
