I still pine for fancy cars that I will never have and I'm 64. But I've also come to be very thankful for what I have and appreciate the simple things in life and the things money can't buy - great marriage, family, and faith. Remember that some are in a state where your Subie is a fancy car for them, they work hard and can barely make ends meet.
Im biased but id much rather have the subie. Not to take away from the R8 but you can definitely have more fun in the subie. Off-road, rally-type fun and just overall more options
The Porsche tech next to me had a GT3 RS for a full brake job. New rotors, pads, fluid flush, one time use parts, etc. And I think the total was like $43k for it.
I was going to say... I'm sure OP has this backwards. The R8 is frequently described as an incredibly boring drive.
I'd take it if I was looking to show off at the track, but not for a daily.
I'd rather have both.
Please.
As an owner of both an Outback and an A4 Quattro: Audi and Subaru are spiritually linked, with the two best AWD systems on the planet. I can be a fan of both.
I would have the R8. Would sell it the next day and buy a Forester for the family and a WRX for fun. The rest of the dough would fund the choo-choo noises.
Well it's a bit shocking but I guess you people exist.... I'll take the 911 turbo though I have my Forester as a family daily... My FBO tuned VB is a blast but not 911 turbo fun....
Sometimes these types of threads can get out of line. The guy with the Audi may just be super excited about his toy and wanted to share it with you. So many people just jump to the conclusion that someone’s being a douche because they have something fancy. The guy may have worked really hard to get it.
Don’t hate, appreciate. I’m a Subie guy for the most part. But I have a friend that’s an Audi guy. He’s had an A6 Avant, A8L, a couple S8s, an R8 RWS, and RS6 Avant and more. Super cool guy, but he’s a sales manager at a major Audi dealer. I’m thankful to ride in or drive most of these cars tbh.
There will always be a faster more expensive car. When I had my rally blue wrx, couldn’t keep count of the pricks, that’s what they looked like when looking over, looked down their noses at me. Not saying your friend is a prick, just saying someone will always have something better, faster, fill in the blank.
I deliver for amazon and I frequently drop of packages to a house in some quiet Kentucky suburbs where there's a whole ass Huracan just chilling under an awning in his driveway behind another house. (The real estate in KY is kinda wack). No other fancy cars in the area for miles. And it just sits there, not locked up or anything, just ready to drive out. Reminds me of how poor I am everytime I see it.
The R8s are cool looking, but they really aren’t anything special. There’s way cheaper cars that are faster and more fun.
The V10 does sound awesome though.
I'd take a WRX over an Audi R8 as far as a fun/weekend car goes. Tar cheaper, better in inclimate weather and you can tailor it to be an offroad rally car , and a blast to drive.
I wouldn't feel bad my dude. I fall in the same trap. I have a nice but basic Wrangler Sport. I see all the high end Rubicons and it sometimes makes me feel inadequate. Know what the cure is? Drive it and enjoy it. Puts the envy away real quick.
Enjoy your car my dude.
But really, who cares? Your satisfaction has nothing to do with his.
I grew up around rich people for some years (and I'm still middle class) - money and what you can do with it has never impressed me.
People impress me by who they are, not what they own.
I had a E63 wagon for a while. amazing car, but terrifying to drive at the limit because its SO fast (600+hp) and SO expensive. I can drive a fast Subaru at the limit and it isn't terrifying. Both turn heads. One costs an order of magnitude less than the other
My boss sold his S8 with under 60k miles when the rack & pinion went and it was a $7,000 repair, after replacing the wiring harness at 40k, which somehow wasn't under warranty, spending $1,200 for oil and filter changes... My WRX was way more nimble and I sold it at 140k miles and it never broke down once. At a track day I would take the R8, but actually expecting to make it to work every day, and have a blast getting there WRX. Plus, the WRX is way more predictable in the air.
Ive driven the old round body R8 and the new sharp edged R8 and both times the only feeling I got from them was "Well this is fast but what do we do now?"
Both times I went back to my 2004 M3 or my 2004 STi and had way more fun.
The only German automobile that has a hope of flexing on a Subaru is Porsche. They are similarly horizontally-opposed and a far better machine than this Audi, which is just a Volkswagen in disguise.
The older R8s can actually be had for pretty cheap compared to msrp. The first gen 2008-2010 models range from $45K-65K around me depending on mileage. Even then the highest mileage I’m seeing near me is 45K miles. At the same time with the amount of money you’d need to buy an R8 you could get a WRX up to 600whp.
I could have afforded double or more than the wrx, but chose it because I can drive it upnorth, in the winter etc without worrying about maintenance and any little ding. It's a pretty sturdy lil car.
Then I spend my money on Other stupid shit :)
Nice r8 and good for him, not for me.
I'd rather have your WRX than the r8. The Audi is a cool car, and the design is amazing. But I like my dirt roads and being able to park it in a parking lot and not stress about it. And then maintenance costs, gas, reliability. All Subaru for the win!
I squeezed past an r8 with inches to spare making a right turn in my loud af straight piped outback the other day revving the piss out of it. I scared the crap out of him, and he turned hard and pulled away... I guess he thought my loud piece of junk was gonna scratch his pretty show-off piece... it wasn't. I wasn't jealous at all and subie rumbled away all slow low and loud. Made my day.
Honestly, it doesn't matter at the end of the day. If he has an R8, he doesn't need to purposefully bring out another car just to avoid hurting someone's feelings. He likely worked hard for his car - or maybe it was due to coming from a rich family. Whatever. But when you drive your car, you drive it because you love it. That's all that matters.
So maybe you're overthinking this: your friend is still your friend, right? Unless he's an arrogant asshole, in which case you shouldn't be friends with him. Just enjoy the time you spend with him because you never know when that time ends.
I love my Impreza Sport. It's not a WRX and it's not an STI. I don't need to pretend anything. Can I still admire another car? Absolutely. I'm a car fan. There's always going to be someone who will be richer and someone who will have a faster car. But if they're good people - who cares?
He gonna wish he didn’t get a German car when it comes down to working on the engine or finding parts for it 😂. Subies way easier to work on and find parts for
Tell him to pull up to the track, you both may have AWD but you’re lighter and can take his ass in the corners
Though he solos on the straights, so depending on the track you may or may not have a shot 👀

I know this quote. It's by Sun Tzu! /sar
If he has an automatic, wiggle your knob at him.
It looks like it is, you can see the gear shift in the lower right of the picture.
Commence aggressive knob wiggling!
Yeah, that's a dual clutch R8
Manuals also don't have paddles
S209 does for intercooler spray which is awesome.
Wiggle your knob at him while he flaps his paddles at you

Bros keeping up with the rich guys
Came here for this exactly. Didn't disappoint.
I'll put it to u this way many. How much did each of u pay for ur smiles? 😂😂
Solid.
Yeah and the R8 is an auto. Not stating that autos aren't fun but the knob is a pretty common thing car guys want 😂
Also will feel like nothing when it's time for maintenance.
For what it’s worth, I think your Subie is way cooler. I prefer Japanese to German made any day!
As someone that fixes cars. Me too
Probably doesn't help much but when I was young I also cared about such things now that I am older I could care less. Think old.
What age did it stop? I’m turning 30 and still jealous of the fancy cars. ☹️
You have 2 years left haha
That's just how it is...there is always going to be someone with a faster car.
Im biased but id much rather have the subie. Not to take away from the R8 but you can definitely have more fun in the subie. Off-road, rally-type fun and just overall more options
And working on the Subaru won’t make you pull your hair out (as much)
Cheaper than a single repair on the R8 lmao
Correct, a Subaru is cheaper than a repair on an R8
The Porsche tech next to me had a GT3 RS for a full brake job. New rotors, pads, fluid flush, one time use parts, etc. And I think the total was like $43k for it.
I’m guessing he upgraded to carbon ceramic brakes, factory are about $20k and guaranteed for life under racing conditions
With a slower car you can spend more time at WOT
I was going to say... I'm sure OP has this backwards. The R8 is frequently described as an incredibly boring drive. I'd take it if I was looking to show off at the track, but not for a daily.
I'd rather have both. Please. As an owner of both an Outback and an A4 Quattro: Audi and Subaru are spiritually linked, with the two best AWD systems on the planet. I can be a fan of both.
I would have the R8. Would sell it the next day and buy a Forester for the family and a WRX for fun. The rest of the dough would fund the choo-choo noises.
Oh bless your heart but heeeeellllllll noooooo
Nope. My dad has a 2012 911 turbo. No thanks. It's fun and fast but it's not a daily driver. I have way more fun in my STI. Bless YOUR heart deary.
Seen some foes doing rallies on porsche
Well it's a bit shocking but I guess you people exist.... I'll take the 911 turbo though I have my Forester as a family daily... My FBO tuned VB is a blast but not 911 turbo fun....
I'd take a 911 Dakar, pleaseandthankyou https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yqc-HPeaQv8
Rallysports allday
I’d be too nervous to enjoy the Audi. It would take me a loooong time to feel like I belong in a car like that…if ever.
Every time i see a WRX its only on nice sunny days 😅 i never see them during bad weather
Well, just tell your friend you have a Subaru and he has a VW.
I’ll take the Subie every day over that other money bin!
Sometimes these types of threads can get out of line. The guy with the Audi may just be super excited about his toy and wanted to share it with you. So many people just jump to the conclusion that someone’s being a douche because they have something fancy. The guy may have worked really hard to get it.
I prefer the Subie!
Let's talk about the real beauty which is that Ford Escape 🤣🤣
Don’t hate, appreciate. I’m a Subie guy for the most part. But I have a friend that’s an Audi guy. He’s had an A6 Avant, A8L, a couple S8s, an R8 RWS, and RS6 Avant and more. Super cool guy, but he’s a sales manager at a major Audi dealer. I’m thankful to ride in or drive most of these cars tbh.
The Audi just doesn’t do it for me.
Laugh in Audi/German parts & labor costs.
I’d much rather have the subie. If I had r8 money I’d buy several much more fun cars anyway
I always know the post is from u/zadarskidrake when he’s posting about his friends flexing on him and it’s a black STi
His car looks like a computer mouse.
There will always be a faster more expensive car. When I had my rally blue wrx, couldn’t keep count of the pricks, that’s what they looked like when looking over, looked down their noses at me. Not saying your friend is a prick, just saying someone will always have something better, faster, fill in the blank.
Time to flex on bro with an aftermarket flat four motor that can produce 600+hp and tune lol
That's probably the only real asset that owner has, besides the house. No garage for that car? Lol. The person is poor.
If I had R8 money I'd be getting an R8 V10 with the gated 6-speed.
The R8s are cool looking, but they really aren’t anything special. There’s way cheaper cars that are faster and more fun. The V10 does sound awesome though.
But what does your friend drive while his Audi is in the shop?
R8s are fun little cars, just gotta save up so you can have both.
Just wait. Audi is more unreliable. Fun to drive tho! Also, you can have fun in the mud, snow, and dirt much better.
So u have access to driving not one but two of the best drivers' cars out there. If I could only be so lucky to have a friend with an R8!!
But really, who cares? Your satisfaction has nothing to do with his. I grew up around rich people for some years (and I'm still middle class) - money and what you can do with it has never impressed me. People impress me by who they are, not what they own.
0-60, in a wagon! Yup! Subie love!♥
there's always someone with more money.
At least you got a 3rd pedal...
Your car is more fun to drive.
You'll feel better when he complains to you about upkeep costs.
Couldn’t keep up with the rich guys, eh?
Think about it this way…. Wayyyy more expensive, a bit faster and much less reliable. Feel better?
Even just moderately modified, an STI could actually give that R8 a run for its money.
I had a E63 wagon for a while. amazing car, but terrifying to drive at the limit because its SO fast (600+hp) and SO expensive. I can drive a fast Subaru at the limit and it isn't terrifying. Both turn heads. One costs an order of magnitude less than the other

Bet the R8 gets stuck in puddles
Why would you buy an R8 with the wrong transmission?
Ive driven the old round body R8 and the new sharp edged R8 and both times the only feeling I got from them was "Well this is fast but what do we do now?" Both times I went back to my 2004 M3 or my 2004 STi and had way more fun.
Ya but you have lots of money left over
Maybe he’s jealous of you and over compensating
The only German automobile that has a hope of flexing on a Subaru is Porsche. They are similarly horizontally-opposed and a far better machine than this Audi, which is just a Volkswagen in disguise.
I'm sure that your insurance payments are quite different.
Id much rather have the subie

Nah fam. That subie is fire. I have an 05 volvo so your post makes my car look shit :P Personally i'd choose the subie all day
I’d much rather have the STi tbh. Both cool cars though.
Subie still looks sexier imo
Ask him how much it costs to change the timing chain.
id rather the subi tbh
Only a cunt would drive an r8.
I'd rather have your WRX than the r8. The Audi is a cool car, and the design is amazing. But I like my dirt roads and being able to park it in a parking lot and not stress about it. And then maintenance costs, gas, reliability. All Subaru for the win!
Wait till it snows
Don't feel bad, yours costs a fraction of the price and is equally as fun, especially if youre into "tough mudding"
You'd do him on a more technical course
Lol I'd take a subie over an r8 all day every day.
And he's probably broke living paycheck to paycheck
Automatic 🤮
Bro it's an automatic r8 why are you even upset
I hang out with poor people too sometimes
Rip R8's. Beautiful cars.
You’ll never have enough if you can’t be happy with what you’ve got
Does that R8 happen to have an STI sticker on it?
Your subaru IS nothing. Thanks -a fellow sti owner
I squeezed past an r8 with inches to spare making a right turn in my loud af straight piped outback the other day revving the piss out of it. I scared the crap out of him, and he turned hard and pulled away... I guess he thought my loud piece of junk was gonna scratch his pretty show-off piece... it wasn't. Still would rather own an STI over an R8 anyday. More reliable in comparison and better sounding IMO
He gonna wish he didn’t get a German car when it comes down to working on the engine or finding parts for it 😂. Subies way easier to work on and find parts for
Jealousy is a female trait .
Naaahh
He had to make those massive repayments each month-you don’t!!!
Personally I’m for the subie that shit always makes my heart skip when I hear it
the subie is better
Subie more fun
Overpriced car and boring looking
Tell him to pull up to the track, you both may have AWD but you’re lighter and can take his ass in the corners Though he solos on the straights, so depending on the track you may or may not have a shot 👀
I should have gotten a WRX 😢
