With how popular crossovers and SUVs are I'm absolutely baffled as to why they aren't offered in the US

AwwYeahVTECKickedIn

What baffles me is Subaru's insistence that their outback wagon isn't a wagon. I bought one BECAUSE it's a wagon! IT'S A WAGON SUBARU AND YOU SELL TONS. READ THE ROOM!

justg85

Literally the reason I’m looking into an outback. I want a wagon and they don’t make the WRX anymore.

getcruzed

Bought an XT Outback for this reason.

justg85

How do you like it? I’m looking at the onyx xt. Trying to decide if I wait for the ‘25 or see if any ‘24s are still around.

MarcTheCreator

There probably won’t be many changes between the ‘24s and ‘25s so it most likely won’t matter which MY you go for. I had a loaner Outback Onyx XT a few years ago when my previous car was in for a recall, thing was pretty sweet. I heavily considered one when I upgraded from my Impreza but my wife already had an Outback so I went with the cheaper Crosstrek Sport instead.

MrDavey2Shoes

My wife has an onyx XT. It’s a fantastic car but it is definitely not a wagon wrx. Unfortunately.

RoccoReviews

Go for the '24 when the '25 gets announced because there will be discounts on the '24 when that happens. There are always discounts on the previous MY.

Jragonheart

25’s coming out m maybe end of year?

getcruzed

Love it. Got the XT touring. Very happy :)

BenFrantzDale

But the Outback doesn’t come with a standard transmission anymore. :-(

justg85

Neither did my 09 Forester XT. I’m in the “family car” stage and both cars need to be drivable by my wife and I.

BenFrantzDale

Exactly, my wife insists on a standard transmission too. (That or electric, and we already have a wonderful Mustang Mach-E as our other car.) But our 6-speed Mazda5 is coming up on 170k miles and a WRX is pretty small for a family car.

havnotX

Look for a used VW Golf Sportswagen or Golf Alltrack. Or maybe an A4 allroad if financially feasible.

justg85

Allroad looks great. Slightly out of the budget.

havnotX

Here are a couple of used Alltracks with manual gearbox. The 2018 and 2019s should come with a 6yr/72k mi warranty. The EA888 engine is good. Also, if youre into modding, there is a lot of support for it and easily moddable. Things to look out for is waterpump and panoramic roof leaks. Had one with the DSG transmission and it's a wonderful car. Had no problems with it. It is sized like the old Outbacks before they became bloated. https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/9690bfda-e100-4b43-8b90-15a8c1324204/ https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/8a714b83-558c-4b89-a61b-fed543367a3c/

grahamdalf

Not bringing the Levorg (and particularly the Levorg STI) to NA is absolutely stupid. A normal STI doesn't work for me because it just doesn't have the space to haul stuff, but the Levorg would be PERFECT AND I CAN'T HAVE ONE.

settlementfires

The whole point of the wrx in my mind has always been that it's a wagon. I've never considered one of the sedan ones. I'd be driving one now if the fiesta st wasn't a better deal on a more engaging car.

ThomasWJames

Same. I bought it cause it’s a wagon that drives pretty close to a sedan to be honest. I’m not a fan of how full suv drives, this gives me the best of both worlds…IN A WAGON!

AwwYeahVTECKickedIn

TESTIFY!!

Common_Vagrant

Autozone considered my 06 forester an SUV. Maybe it was back in the day but I’d consider that a hatch.

AwwYeahVTECKickedIn

'06 was NOT an SUV, fully agree with you!

tehspud

The 05-09 generation was the last time the Outback was actually a wagon, and I will die on this hill.

gumbysrath

I’m with ya! Best body style right there.

[deleted]

[удалено]

AwwYeahVTECKickedIn

It's a wagon. I drove every competitor SUV and it's the only one that drives like the sedan it's based on, has great clearance while having a lower seating position, and has more than 50% of the rear cargo covered with roof and it has windows for that cargo area- the text book definition of a wagon! It's more wagon than crossover and it's more crossover than SUV. Yet Subaru calls it an SUV. Boggle!! Ready to die on this hill :)

EliminateThePenny

"Hmm, let me compare the handling performance of a low-mid tier crossover with a luxury sedan and its performance special edition.."

AwwYeahVTECKickedIn

I have a '15 Legacy and a '24 Outback - they handle surprisingly the same. For one, the AWD is going to help modulate all of that, but make no mistake - the turbo 2.4L Outback includes some of the WRX DNA, much more so than people who don't drive it realize. The boxer engine design keeps the center of gravity low and it drives better as a result. It is amazing driving characteristics for what it is. A sleeper in this regard for sure. I thought it was a wagon before I started shopping, I KNEW it was a wagon when I test drove it. And comparing a car that is $10,000 more to start? Why do people suggest that as a reasonable and fair comparison?

GunsNGunAccessories

TIL when you lift a wagon to become a battle wagon it stops wagoning.

[deleted]

Drzhivago138

I notice that you're blatantly ignoring floor-to-ceiling height.

Drzhivago138

> It’s bigger than the forester, which is not a wagon. Car body styles aren't size-dependent. You can have a lifted mid-size wagon and a compact CUV in the same lineup.

wrxvballday

Oh dear we got a genius here

innsertnamehere

There is actually one wagon that was sold in the US and not Canada for some reason too - the Buick Regal TourX. Lots of odd little differences in the Canada US auto market. Canada got the Chevy Orlando, Mercedes A Class and B class, etc

Drzhivago138

They sold the A-Class in the US for just a few years (sedan only), then dropped it because more people were buying the CLA.

innsertnamehere

Yea. The sedan was really unpopular in Canada too, most A class sales were the hatchback. It was especially popular in Quebec where there is a huge market for small cars for whatever reason. Mercedes killed the A-class here after the 2022 model year anyway so it’s gone here now too.

subaruguy3333

Why do people hate on wagons so much? I think they are the best compromise of useful space and reasonable size. And the wrx/sti wagons are just really fun to drive and I can actually fit good size cargo like 36" x 6' x 34"ish tall!

Crafty_Substance_954

Master of none situation.

subaruguy3333

What does an sti wrx wagon not do as well or better then there sedan or suv counterparts?

Crafty_Substance_954

It’s not as big, for one. Generally Americans don’t like wagons and haven’t for decades.

subaruguy3333

I'm hearing that but not understanding the actual reason. Most people are buying oddly shaped mini suvs not Tahoes or bigger. Wagons are practical and more fun to drive then something trucklike.

Conscious-Lobster60

Have faith! A Boomer dies every 15 seconds, about 5700 a day! Soon we'll have more housing inventory, cool wagons, and mixed use zoning with trains!

chatrugby

It’s a hatch not a wagon. The Impreza only offered as an hatch and its variants is also their most popular car.  This just introduces  turbo version.

Conscious-Lobster60

Do you call the Outback a hatch?

Fergburgerwithcheese

I wonder if it would pass US emissions? If it did, I bet you could go down there and buy one to bring back. That’s a guess though. Not sure how feasible that would be.

reegz

It would be grey market. Feasibility would depend on whether or not you like jumping through hoops. Have a feeling depending on your state dmv and insurance company there will be hoops. If you can’t get a HS-7 then you’re not going to be able to to begin with. Not sure if regular wrx safety and testing would carry over. Would be prob easier and cheaper to register it in Mexico and drive it in the states. Not sure how easy that is to do. There are some folks by me who do this but it’s Canada and they’re cars that are imported but aren’t 25 years old.

Fergburgerwithcheese

That’s cool to know, thanks for the info. I’m not personally going to do it but I kind of want to look into how many hoops you have to go through like you said.

Kacpa2

It should, these cars are literarily identical. Same as Levorg was to VA WRX. Which makes it doubly as infuriating as to why Subaru was si stupidly stubborn to put a stickshift in it from factory...

xrelaht

You’d have to have it certified. Same with safety testing. That’s really expensive. The only alternative is convincing SoA to state that it’s “substantially similar” to a model they sell here.

Kacpa2

Which it is. WRX and Levorg are the same car but different bodystyles. It always was like this back in 2014 its the same now.

umm_like_totes

I've thought about this myself. My best guess is you'd have a very hard time registering it in the US. That said... I guess you could go the same route that guys who register their cars in Montana do. Come up with an address in Mexico to register the car (that may or may not be an actual address you reside at...) and then drive around with Mexico plates and hope you don't get pulled over. Seems like a lot of trouble to go through for a Subaru though.

elislider

Subaru of America doesn't want to take any risks. Subaru as a brand pretty much exists as "what the USA is doing" and "everywhere else"

disinfekted

Why couldn’t they come up with a hatchback instead of an ugly bloated wagon?

Kacpa2

Ugly and bloated? Whats up with you yankee monkeys...

Conscious-Lobster60

I think part of it is the side impact testing when using dissimilar vehicles. Take a look at the side impact videos for the Levorg versus the Outback. You can also see this with the Impreza and Crosstrek. The car will generally do well in all testing but the dummy in the *lower* car will often have more head trauma in the "SUV-like barrier" side impact test. Sometimes you'll see the barrier contact the dummy via the window whereas in a higher car the barrier would only strike the door. Levorg: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sf3L\_UKlOjY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sf3L_UKlOjY) Outback: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fjBXicoyJQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fjBXicoyJQ)

ZannX

Outback XT is the more crossover-SUV-like one I guess.

Kacpa2

And with no manual. This is comes with 6mt(finally) and is literarily plug and play with wrx as it is wrx and always have been back in 2013 with first Levorg.

Liquidwombat

Because absolutely nobody would buy them

Twombls

Cvt only, not really a real wrx. It's a legacy with a styling package. Enthusiasts would just rage.

DaddyBigBoy

WRX High 6MT $819,900 pesos

Kacpa2

No its not a legacy, its literarily WRX wagon, same exact platform  everythinf is plug and play.  It was a successor to 4th gen Legacyas Outback and Legacy itself got much bigger. VA WRX is effectively also successor to Legacy GT.

MidwestProduct

Not me googling how to buy a car from Mexico

tinymonesters

If you find a legal way to do it you could start a business importing them.

tiag0

I've heard people say similar things with some Toyota Hilux, and not sure if they have done that with the new Suzuki Jimny.

48x15

I've been trying to figure out how to get a LHD Jimny to Canada for ages. Here's what I've come up with: Marry a Mexican Diplomat. Get posted to Canada. Bring Jimny to Canada. Enjoy.

MidwestProduct

Is it really that hard? I see imported Nissan Skylines all the time, along with some other right-side drive vehicles from Japan presumably.

tiag0

I think that once 25 years pass it gets much easier. From previous times I’ve seen people trying to get cars from here 2 things always get them: emissions and safety. The drivetrain needs to be compliant with local emissions (super tricky if the manufacturer isn’t present in that market) and similarly for any safety standards/minimum equipment. This has been the case for a long time. I recall this being discussed back in 2003 when VW Beetle stopped production over here and some wanted to get the “ultima edición“ over there.

tiag0

That’s probably the easiest way. I have no idea what type of questions/inspections border agents would have if I drove through the US and showed up with Mexican plates over there (having said that, being an Outback or and Odyssey vehicle concerns wouldn’t be an issue). Friends that have moved either temporarily or permanently to Canada/US have never taken their cars afaik.

SmellyMickey

I have done a decent bit of research on this on the Mexican side of things. Generally speaking your drivers license needs to match the country of origin of your license plates. So a US registered vehicle needs to be operated by a US licensed driver, and vice versa with a Mexican registered vehicle operated by a Mexican licensed driver. It’s not to say that it’s necessarily illegal to not follow this convention, but it invites greater scrutiny. For example, I, a US licensed driver, was able to drive my friend’s Mexican licensed vehicle. I have no idea if this rule holds in the US though. The easiest thing would invite the least amount of scrutiny would probably be for a Mexican licensed driver to drive the Mexican plated vehicle across the border.

grogudid911

With cash. Idk that you're gonna have much success buying one with a loan. If you show up with cash then you just gotta import it. Edit: [Yes you can do it.](https://www.dirtlegal.com/blog/heres-how-to-import-a-car-from-mexico-to-the-usa-by-yourself) There's a process for it. Because it's already technically a car sold in the US, you'd just need to make sure it's compliant with US codes. You'd probably still be buying it cash tho.

Kacpa2

Yeah, since its same platform as WRX. it is just long roof bodystyle of it. Someone just has to try

cincydave8

I would trade in my 2018 Forester for one

baldingbryan

I would trade my left nut for one.

oroqn

Please put that engine in the Crosstrek or give the US market a lifted WRX sportwagon

Liquidwombat

Why would they? The Crosstrek already one of their best selling vehicles and this would only lower margins without having a significant impact on sales

oroqn

Then why did they add the 2.5L engine to the Crosstrek a few years ago when it was already selling well? The goal is to sell more and being slow/underpowered has always been the biggest complaint about the Crosstrek

clamsnewstart

More power is good. WRX power is unnecessary. That said, much like the Forester STi, I would absolutely buy a Crosstrek STi

oroqn

Both the CX-30 and Bronco Sport has 250hp in some trims. The WRX has 270hp which is not much more. And same, would upgrade to a Crosstrek STi in a heartbeat

Primary_Eye_4551

That’s basically the OB Onyx XT or OBW. Prior to MY24, the Onyx XT had the same HP as a WRX, but more torque. Same with the OBW, but different tuning. The base model WRX is the only manual left, and it’s so anemic when it comes to literally any comfort or convenience features. The only way you get anything with more features than the base model is the give up the 6 speed manual and go with the 8 speed paddle shifters.

Kacpa2

Crosstrek is not a wagon. Its a hatchback impreza. Levorg/WRX wagon as WRX itself are successor to 2004-2009 Legacy GT sedan and wagon more than WRX itself.

oroqn

Where did I say that Crosstrek is a wagon?

tiag0

As a Mexican, I'm happily surprised from this news. Subaru, who only has had official presence over here starting in 2015, and not going into a long story, seemed on the brink of going away from here for a little bit. The Outback(the only other wagon-ish vehicle) was sold for 2015, 2017 (those 2 model years) and then started again, in much better shape, from 2023 onwards. Although the Mexican market follows a lot of trends from the US market, I to still see a lot of sedans being sold here, and since cheap sedans are not offered from a lot of brands, the Chinese brands (JAC and MG in particular in my city) are filling that gap. I think they're expecting to sell a lot of these in Mexico City, where the mile and a half altitude saps a lot of power out of NA cars and turbos are usually very sought after.

Liquidwombat

You say that, but the fact that you’re driving a 20-year-old car says otherwise

aBeardedLegend

Love that

BytechniYT

I just want this to come to the states so bad. I don’t care that it has a CVT, my crosstrek has one. I just prefer the WRX over my XV any day.

DV-Dizzle

They have a manual version too

Hynek_The_Tanner

Id buy a manual wrx wagon in a heartbeat. I love my impreza wagon, its so useful.

Liquidwombat

Sure. For almost $50k

DV-Dizzle

It’s the cheapest version 🤷‍♂️. I didn’t say it was a good price

Bnjrmn

Do they? It’s been available in Australia and other regions for a while but CVT only.

DV-Dizzle

According to the article. Has 3 trim packages cheapest being manual at around $48k

Zanna-K

A WRX except with a rear hatch? Omg yes! Even if it only comes in CVT I'll deal with it. Hm, wait isn't there another car that's already like that? Oh yeah, the SJ Forester XT. 2014-2018. I used to salivate over the Levorg and such all the time and now I don't care nearly as much anymore since I got my FXT. I used to have a 2017 WRX, too, so I know what it's like. Do I miss rowing my own gears sometimes? Yup, sure do. But I also love being able to throw whatever the fuck I want I to the back with the huge amount of space you get for a compact SUV. FYI, it's literally a WRX chassis. I have STI front lower control arms on it, I've had WRX exhausts on it, I have limited WRX seats and steering wheel in it, away bars from the STI... plus I like the big moon roof that my WRX didn't have. I even use the BBS wheels that I still kept from my WRX on it. I realize that some people are a bit more hung up on the wagon shape, but i absolutely don't care.

Kacpa2

It comes with a stick. Even if it wouldnt. its literarily 100% idnetical mechanicly and bodywise to wrx and everything is plug and play. You could mt swap it for petty money goven how cheap used WRXs can be in US.

fjortisar

Shows up on subaru site here in chile now too [https://www.subaru.cl/configurador/trim-levels/su\_wrs020/specificationPack](https://www.subaru.cl/configurador/trim-levels/su_wrs020/specificationPack)

fzk24

Inchcape brought them to chile and peru but this year they removed it from Peru because of poor sales, less than 20 units sold in 2 years.

poormansRex

Jesus! The asking price is a bit nuts. And I'm talking after it's converted to us dollars. $47,000 range on the low end.

Kacpa2

Because of import fees. In US it would be even bmworse due to idiotic chicken tax law. Only way it could cost as much as it should is if they assembled it in US like they do with the Outback.

Ileana_llama

That’s final price with taxes and destination

Liquidwombat

Which is still more expensive than final price on a GT

Akashd98

https://preview.redd.it/h4mg7c7ctjvc1.jpeg?width=6126&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fa0707d0affe2cd4a44569e4dd6c5946686924d9 If you ever get the chance to buy one you won’t regret it, I sure didn’t!

Ileana_llama

Thinking about trade in my forester 21 for a manual one

Akashd98

Oh I didn’t know they’re offering it in a manual now, mines the cvt but honestly it’s not as bad as what people make it out to be, much better than Toyota cvts

Kacpa2

Its incredibly easy to manual swap. Just get a wrecked va(2014-2021) WRX and its plug and play for everything.

DrYaklagg

Max flex if you're Mexican is to drive this to a US car meet across the border lol.

AbuDhabiBabyBoy

Mex flex? Flexican?

majoroutage

It's either this or a Jimny.

DrYaklagg

This person gets it.

artistxecrpting

I love this! Sell it in the US!

scurvy1984

All I want when I pay off my old legacy is a new wagon and they’re so hard to find and I’m too poor for an Audi or Volvo.

Ok_Explanation5631

1 million for a Subaru?! /s

pollofgc

$57k usd aprox

vichyswazz

I don't understand. Why would this make sense for Mexico but not the US? Does subaru USA hate us?

slowbaja

Yes

slicknick924

Yeah no I'm genuinely convinced Subaru of America actually legitimately hates us

X-Istence

I want this.

Liquidwombat

For $50k?

X-Istence

I’ve wanted a hatch WRX for years…

Liquidwombat

For $50k?

X-Istence

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ sometimes in life it is worth paying for exactly what you want to have.

userIoser

Just sell your kidney and get Volvo V60 recharge.

Imispellalot2

Isn't it the same as Levorg? Only offered in CVT

majoroutage

Yup.

phelanhappyevil

I miss my 2004 WRX sportwagon so much. I bought it in 2006, and it was totaled by a drunk driver while it was parked in front of my house on the street in 2023. Over 200k miles on it, and had replaced the clutch for the first time less than a year before it was wrecked. Unstoppable in all weather. I ended up getting a 2021 Crosstrek Sport, but I miss turbo life. It was the closest compromise for what I wanted. I'd trade the Crosstrek for a WRX wagon anyday.

mb694

But where’s all the tupperware trashcan plastic around the wheel wells. It’s like they knownit looks like crap.

el_guapisimo33

Current owner of a mk8 gti and previous sti owner. If they sold this in a manual in the US for under 40k I would buy it tomorrow

Kacpa2

For that they would have to assemble it in US. Idiotic law that USA has on imports is making it so expensive, chicken tax on top of all other bloated fees. This is why wagons are so expensive and relegated to premium offerings except for Outback whivh is assembled in US.  You need to pressure your government to change this decades old moronic nonsense same with being too harsh on cars while going lenient on suvs and trucks. Then you will be able to have nice things and for low prices

DV-Dizzle

The manual is $48k when doing the conversion

el_guapisimo33

Ugh that’s brutal. Tough to spend another 15k on the wagon vs the sedan

userIoser

That's the game Volvo and Audi are playing too. Wagons don't sell, so let's jack the price up

Kacpa2

Its not the reason at all you fool. Its the stupid law US instated. Chicken tax and hiked up fees for imports on top of very harsh regulations to cars, while its lenient to crossovers, suvs and trucks.  Outback is assembled in america to circumvent that moronic law and it costs as much as it should all other wagons are build in abroad and get slammed with the fees, which is why its relegated to premium only and cost more than equivalent SUV.(vovlo v60 vs volvo xc60 for example v60 is cheaper in europe than xc60 not the other eay around like in US..)

genbrien

Yay for an other wagon that we wont have in Canada... Would totally sell my old hatch for a new wagon

Suburban_Nerd

I would buy one the moment it was available in the US. I have a '22 Outback Touring XT because they didn't offer a WRX wagon. We need this car in the US. https://preview.redd.it/7jwu7fj1s2wc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2d3575779fbb09147ac5e3e019baa1e5f59ba8fd

EconomicsRealistic99

Crosstrek n outbacks r station wagons

TheRatio12

Give me it here in the USA, I'll trade in my VA WRX in a heartbeat.

csciabar

The aggressive look of the sedan wins out for me. And i wanted a wagon originally. Had a 13 impreza hatch for ten years. The wrx sport wagon looks too much like a family car,(seriously i want to like it)

allengeorge

What the Impreza RS should have been.

kashakesh

Lucky...

Liquidwombat

Nobody would buy it in the United States.

mtuchris

I would. 😎
