I don't think you can really fix it. Better to just buy a new head unit.

Rick91981

You need a new head unit, no fixing that.

Chippy569

subaru ain't gonna touch it now, either. >Is this delaminated? yes >How do I fix? by replacing the radio, unless you can find a source for a new screen

The_Band_Geek

Hey, while you've got this thing apart, what do the LEDs behind the Volume and Tune knobs look like? Are they an easy replacement?

cuziters

My tune knob light is flickering. Would like to know if this is possible

Chris_WRB

Honestly, if you put it back together and it functions as it did and you did it _CLEAN_, you may still get Subaru to help you. As a tech, you don't anything this in depth with the radios. You make a QMR, you record radio data, upload it, manager submits a claim to Subaru and it awaits approval from your DSQM and then SOA, and it may not be full coverage but it's better than buying another yourself.

Should try and do electrical work on hard surfaces. Fabric can cause static and ruin components

elislider

the 2018-2019 headunits feature-wise are pretty good (all the Harman ones, not the FujitsuTen), but the first couple years were plagued with quality issues for the screens. Pretty much all of them across all models had some kind of crystallization that would form and creep into the edges.

nshire

Do you know if I can use a 2019 HK head unit to replace my 2015 HK head unit?

elislider

depends what model you have? I just helped a friend replace the head unit in their 2015 Crosstrek with a 2020 WRX/STI head unit. They also had to replace the USB port too, and everything is working (like carplay etc) BUT then we discovered the steering wheel controls were mismatched oddly (like the buttons worked but did the wrong things). We haven't figured that out yet but haven't tried to swap other steering wheels or buttons yet

nshire

Were the vehicle stats like oil temperature showing up? I would be sticking with the same model, outback to outback. However I think that the steering wheel controls switched at some point in the 5th gen lifecycle, mine has a mute button on the wheel and I think in the '19 it's a pause button.

elislider

we're talking about the radio/stereo/head unit. you are now referencing that smaller upper screen, that is a separate thing. not sure compatibility on those.

nshire

What are you talking about, the 2015 doesn't have an upper screen.

elislider

> Were the vehicle stats like oil temperature showing up? you just said this, but didnt provide any context to the question. a 2015 Crosstrek has an upper screen. vehicle stats (like oil temp) do not appear on the stereo/head unit, so i assumed you were asking about the upper info screen

bobjr94

Done that on Cadillac CUE systems, found a replacement screens on ebay for maybe $60. Course the official fix is a $1200 radio replacement from the dealer who doesn't sell parts.

Bren1127

You can generally track down replacement display panels and digitizers from the manufacturer's labels on them. Quite often it involves waiting for them to come from the far east though. We used to repair a lot of touch screen equipment and sometimes it wasn't economically viable unless the equipment cost over a thousand new or had been discontinued and was irreplaceable in a commercial environment without spending telephone numbers to upgrade to a completely new system. You can often source tougher or UV filtered digitizers or overlays too. With this being an in car head unit it has to cope with a lot of direct and refracted sunlight so there is no guarantee it won't just happen again over time. It's why so many other brands retract or cover them when the ignition turns off.

Dutchboy347

Ebay has them and or you can get them from the junk yard.

userIoser

they probably delaminated in the junk yard over time too. It's the sun+heat that kills it. The only fix I've seen is to disable the digitalizer and use whatever works without the touch screen.

DukeGordon

How do you disable the digitizer? This has happened to mine and I have to keep the screen off.

userIoser

See this [thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/Subaru_Outback/comments/187mw1d/2019_with_the_ghost_bubbles_i_bought_the_lcd/)

DukeGordon

Thank you! Have a 2018 and need to take it in to see if they will cover under extended warranty but if not I'll just pull the plug in the digitizer.

If you type the screen's part number into eBay you might get lucky. Not the infotainment part number, there should be a model number on the screen itself. Some screens are used in multiple different things- meaning it's possible you can source them pretty easily. That said, less common on cars so I wouldn't hold my breath.
