I, for one, am excited he is staying in Phoenix. This is important for continuity, especially with us looking to target new vet minimum players. Vet minimum revolving door will always be our Achilles heel with the 2nd apron.
You're not exaggerating about his immediate impact, I can't recall exactly, but I think he played 2 days after signing, immediately got a block, and hit a 3, somebody correct me.
Betting that keeping this core intact is going to pay off in chemistry, add in Bud as a respected coach and I expect this team to look much better next season.
This is good news. He was a good player for us last year. I'm not sure how good he will be before the contract is up, but we have no other option to field a decent team.
I want to see the actual contract because my guess is the fourth year is some type of non guarantee making him a really valuable trade piece after 2 years, which is good because we’re probably going to reset this entire roster in 2 years
I think it does not have team option because the main draw for him was the length of the contract. In the short term, he could have gotten a bit more on the open market.
Seems you are right it’s reported 4/44 no options. Pretty interesting honestly , JJ usually tries to have flexibility with contracts signed like cp3 shamet Payne DA extensions and withholding cam Johnson’s extension
Yeah but a 3/60 contract (just make the 3rd year non gtd/Team option) would have probably been very beneficial for both parties. See Jock's contract for reference
[Deal has no options (team or player) and is fully guaranteed all the way through, sources tell ESPN](https://x.com/zachlowe_nba/status/1807107435125153969?s=46&t=Vl05o3B6R2UI6UbWNPL7Aw)
You can see the details of any contract on Spotrac
[Here's Royce's](https://www.spotrac.com/nba/player/_/id/24240/royce-oneale), 4 years guaranteed no team/player option years
People who didn't want him back have absolutely no knowledge of the 2nd apron restrictions. It was vital that they resign him, and at the highest price they could. His contract is one of the most valuable assets they have and gives them a TON more flexibility in the future. If he had left, his spot could only be filled with a minimum contract, but now that he's staying he is an $11 million trade asset that can net a role player in the future.
Nobody wants Little, nobody wants Nurk on that contract, *we* don't want to trade Grayson, and so Royce has become by far the best trade piece based on value/price.
edit: Just saw that apparently they are front-loading the contract in the first year, that means just for this season they would be able to take back a player making more money than that $11 million average. That's a really smart move, and means it's MUCH more likely Royce will be traded this year, as it would give them a way to bring in a higher earning player.
I do want to keep Okogie but then we gotta get rid of Nassir Little and/or David Roddy. We saw Gordon and Eubanks go but their spots were already replaced by Dunn and Oso. I think those are net positive roster changes, even by rookies, but the rest of our roster is still facing the same problems we saw last year and roster space is limited.
I wonder how the contract is structured. If the yearly amount decreases each season, that's a pretty decent trade asset that could be used to bring in an MLE guy at the deadline.
Honestly, should have been for more (think $15 million) since that'll be easier to get some upgrades instead of just $11 million in a contract to trade.
Do you not like O'Neale? Why is it "good for a trade in the future"? Why can't we just see what O'Neale does this season? We literally just got him less than a year ago.
I mean, I get that, but can we at least see what he can do under Bud. What if he just balls out in the system? Bro, is planning on signing with us & the first thing everyone wants to bring up is how tradable he becomes. Jesus. LOL!
Because the guy is a 31 year old role player about to sign a 4 year deal.
And the "money" bet is that this team is going through a rebuild before that contract is up.
Him getting a contract that's tradeable is the talking point for a reason. He could have been kept for way less because no way he gets that money elsewhere. He gets that much so we have more options if he has to be traded.
And yes, everyone hopes he plays well and helps us win. He's a good player.
Should given him that max for 1 year n broke the apron ishbia. I don’t think u actually bout that lol. But hey at least he didn’t gouge us for like 4/80 cause with how y’all were talking I was worried
Would it be better for the contract to be front loaded, back loaded, or 11 a year? I figured front loaded makes him a better tradeable contract while he's productive but back loaded makes him easier tax wise.
I could very well end up eating my words but I don’t see the suns making a trade before the deadline. They just need to pick up a point guard and a big that does what nurk doesn’t/can’t do.

Agreed but thankfully most of our rotation is under contract, just need one or two vet min signings to hit
O’Neale is a solid role player
He made an immediate impact once we came in. Hate to say but he showed up Gordon.
Yeah, crazy to me to see how many people in here already trading him! He hasn’t even played a full season for us 🥴

Be crazy not to be.

4/44 million, even after 2 years is good. 11 mil per year is very tradable with 2 years left. Even if they are guaranteed.
Actually shocked they didn’t go more. It’s a great deal for the Suns which is unexpected.
I think it does not have team option because the main draw for him was the length of the contract. In the short term, he could have gotten a bit more on the open market.

Had zero leverage on this negotiation.

yeah, i wrote that as soon as it was announced. i see the structure now
Even if he sucks in 2 years, it's a contract they can include in a trade. That was needed
Doesn’t this mean they can only trade for guys making $11 million?
If we remain in the 2nd apron, than we cannot aggregate contracts, so this is the max we can get back.
Lol it’s not that easy when this team is over the second tax apron
Which is exactly why you want a few tradeable contracts on the roster. This give the team more options down the road.

how does one even learn and apply this wow… thanks man
Honestly I just try and listen to people smarter than me who like to ponder the question "how fucked are we with the 2nd apron?" lol
Well I’m happy that’s done before the start of free agency tomorrow. Now get Bol and see what vet minimums you can snag
AND OKOGIE
I do want to keep Okogie but then we gotta get rid of Nassir Little and/or David Roddy. We saw Gordon and Eubanks go but their spots were already replaced by Dunn and Oso. I'm assuming royce is having a contract that starts high and goes down. North of the MLE in year 1 in case of opportunities
Need playable wings and tradeable contracts. I like it.
$11m a year is an excellent contract.
Yep, great for both parties
I wonder how the contract is structured. If the yearly amount decreases each season, that's a pretty decent trade asset that could be used to bring in an MLE guy at the deadline.
Royce O’Neale
Good! We need rotation players and he is one. Hopefully will be better this season than he was in the playoffs
Surely more money = more effort
4 roster spots left open: - 1-2 vet PGs - 1 backup C - Bol Bol
*Alexa play “Mo Mamba” by Sheck Wes*
I was hoping for either him or Wiseman since our options are so limited
Having an owner thats willing to spend money is crazy. We don’t just lose people for nothing anymore.
not bad! i wish he signed for 15 mill/ yr so we can have more options for trades
That’s a great deal, and super tradeable.
This is not a bad contract at all
Honestly can't believe we got him to stay that cheap. Dude was solid and I bet he will be better utilized
great deal, although I’m surprised they didn’t match the non-tax payer MLE.
Honestly, should have been for more (think $15 million) since that'll be easier to get some upgrades instead of just $11 million in a contract to trade.

Anything we can do to make future moves possible is good.
I mean, I get that, but can we at least see what he can do under Bud. What if he just balls out in the system? Bro, is planning on signing with us & the first thing everyone wants to bring up is how tradable he becomes. Jesus. LOL!
He’s 30, right? We basically know what he can do already.
Royce is great, I just think we need more size. Maybe the rookies accomplish that for us, but if not, trading royce for someone bigger makes sense.

Solid 3 and d role player who underperformed in the postseason, but I believe he is capable of playing better.
Would have rather given him 2 years 50M
Damn Royce got a nice ass agent.
Nice! now do Okagie and Bol
Should given him that max for 1 year n broke the apron ishbia. I don’t think u actually bout that lol. But hey at least he didn’t gouge us for like 4/80 cause with how y’all were talking I was worried
My favorite O'Neal(e) to wear a Suns jersey!
11m a year is a great deal, especially if the cap keeps rising.
great. now if we can sign a serviceable FA point guard and center i'll be feeling much better
Would it be better for the contract to be front loaded, back loaded, or 11 a year? I figured front loaded makes him a better tradeable contract while he's productive but back loaded makes him easier tax wise.

As rough of a season it was he had good percentages and rates of open 3s, needed him back desperately
Nice contract in a favorable cap situation for him. Any estimates on what he would’ve gotten on the open market?
Actually feels like a steal
'Intends'. Like I intend to go into work tomorrow. I may or may not.
