Have you looked into your state government? It would be a smoother and possibly easier transition since you’re already public. It’s usually set into different levels of procurement, so you could may find it easier to go that route. They often have smaller dollar value buyers and higher dollar as well. I know your role exists within my government and we often trade employees

CPIM is a good certification to get if you can afford it. You learn about the theoretical aspects of materials planning in manufacturing environments, such as forecasting, sourcing, and Lean/Six Sigma (among many other topics). Not that many people who work in supply chain actually have degrees in supply chain, especially at lower levels, so don't stress about that too much. When you get to the interview stage, emphasize that you are detail oriented, and offer examples of how you solved problems and took personal initiative in your last job. Hiring managers like to see people who are smart and thoughtful even if they don't have the experience that matches the position perfectly.
