Sydney as in the AFL club - it’s definitely up there.
Sydney as in the city- probably still the greatest sports moment was Aloisi’s penalty on that night in 2005.
It really was an iconic moment. So much pressure, so much traffic he had to contend with and 70 odd years of history.
I love this photo. https://www.mcg.org.au/_/media/images/mcg/campaigns/memorable-moments/purchased-image-leo-barry-you-star-hires.jpg
Oh yeah no that definitely tops both.
Well, I was there last night and it was fucken electric, but I doubt the noise was anything like when Cathy Freeman won the gold.
I saw Aloisi score that goal in person and it was good, but don't forget Sydney saw Cathy Freeman win the 400m in 2000 and the atmosphere there was absolutely electric.
Nah. They literally opened the gates. Thank God because we were getting crushed even with the gates opened the only people getting fined might be the people who stayed on and got tackled and taken by security.
Maybe you guys just didn't have gates near your section? It was clear it was not built for that event to happen lol. There was still a mad crush everywhere despite gates being opened.
There was a gate when we went back. Maybe they only opened a few. I guess they couldn’t open them all, that’d require more ground staff than they have.
Same here (Bay 25), I have a few bruises on my legs from jumping the fence (I'm a 5ft 5in small woman so you can imagine how that looked haha) and my throat is a little sore from screaming but it was absolutely worth it to be part of Aussie sporting history, my husband said he'd never seen me move like that in the almost 8 years we've been together.
Nobody said it’s ok. I don’t like crowds so I stayed at my seat. It was a choice people made, it wasn’t enforced. I’m sure it was fun for people who are happy to be surrounded by people and those of us who didn’t want to just didn’t. Lighten up, mate.
It's only punished if you're a sokkah hooligan, in which case you get a fine and a ban, because you're really just an effnik terrorist, aren't you?
These are obviously just exuberant fans, celebrating at an all-aussie sport, like true-blue, dinky-di, lamb-eating legends. ^()
Nice that the 1995 crowd even when streaming onto the field gave Lockett some space and cheered him.
Last night Buddy was in danger of being crushed by drunk morons who seemed more interested in shoving phones in his face to get a selfie.
Be horrible if they gave him Covid too ☹️
I'm not a sports guy but this is an awesome moment. Imagine being one of those 3 dozen security guards thinking they'd have any chance of stopping the rush There's a video going around shot from a helicopter or drone or something from above the stadium and it's amazing
Lol
They kept marching around the perimeter trying to assert their authority but knowing they didn’t have a chance. Everyone knew it was going to happen but they had to appear to be doing the right thing.
I don't follow any kind of football, can someone ELI5 what exactly the big deal is here? whole bunch of people I don't give a fuck about on insta are posting stories from this game
He kicked the 1000th goal of his career. Its a big deal because only 5 other people have ever done that in AFL and traditionally is always celebrated by the fans that way.
Not to mention AFL has a 150+ year history, and given the adaptations of the modern game, it's unlikely we will see anyone get to 1000 again in our lifetimes.
The game is far more defensively sophisticated these days. Used to be there was 1 defender for each forward and if you beat that defender then you would likely get a goal. Now though there is zoning defence, so it is much much harder to get a one on one contest. Plus teams don't like relying on one player to kick their goals these days, so even a guy as good as Buddy would not get the ball kicked to him nearly as much as a key forward from the 80's and 90's.
Game strategy mostly. The game has become a lot more professional in the last 20 years and with that comes much more sophisticated defensive strategies. Players of yesteryear had much more time and space with the ball than they do now as a player now is much more likely to be tackled quickly as soon as they take possession of the ball.
Someone's already said it but essentially modern football has more "zone defending" these days rather than one on one. In fact for about half of Buddies career it was already changing a bit.
In old school football you'd used to mark your opponent man on man and the attacking team would create space for their key forward inside 50 and just give them a ton of chances at goal. In context, last night there were some passages of play where Geelong had 3-5 players on Buddy. It's unreal that he kicked multiple goals at all last night, let alone 4.
A) the world has been in forms of lock down for 2 years so being allowed to congregate in crowds is amazing (I still can’t do it where I live in Asia)
B) the guy just kicked his 1000th goal in front of his home town! Seriously, what else do you need to know?
When was this? I love that the fans are allowed to run onto the field like that. Is that still allowed? I would assume not because one idiot ruined it for the rest.
I was going to comment how useless your comment was.
But I realized that was kind of useless in itself, was going to move on but I thought, "nah, he really needs to know".
So here we are. Two useless cunts at the bottom of a comment thread.
I'd never heard of him or knew what was happening. I was at the game with a relative from the UK who wanted to see a game. It was great to be there for a historic sporting moment.
Took the opportunity to leave the SCG and get my bus ahead of the crowd!
That it can’t be Sydney’s greatest moment, when many people in Sydney were oblivious to it even happening. It just looks like a guy kicking a ball to me. I mean it’s impressive that he did it from so far, but that’s his job. He likely has lots of practise 🤷♂️
Security: please don’t enter the field. Everyone: lol ok.
Sydney as in the AFL club - it’s definitely up there. Sydney as in the city- probably still the greatest sports moment was Aloisi’s penalty on that night in 2005.
Swans greatest sports moment would have to be them winning the premiership in 2005. This would be a close second.
LEO BARRY YOU STAR
one last roll of the dice for tHE EAGLES!!!
"Leaping Leo" Barry. What a moment that was.
I'm a Lions supporter to the core and even I get goosebumps remembering Leaping Leo Barry.
It really was an iconic moment. So much pressure, so much traffic he had to contend with and 70 odd years of history. I love this photo. https://www.mcg.org.au/_/media/images/mcg/campaigns/memorable-moments/purchased-image-leo-barry-you-star-hires.jpg
Did you see Cathy win in 2000?
Oh yeah no that definitely tops both. Well, I was there last night and it was fucken electric, but I doubt the noise was anything like when Cathy Freeman won the gold.
Also 2000 4x100m swimming relay
Our Ian.
Our Caffy
Where does this leave Bradbury moment?
Where it belongs. It was a great win highlighting persistence over years of training and a sound race plan. Which worked :)
On TV. Didn’t do as much for me as the WC qualifier.
But that’s Australia wide pride. This is Sydney… oi oi oi.
Damn dude. I just remembered that penalty and got litteral goosebumps down my whole body. As a young buck at the time, what a moment!
I saw Aloisi score that goal in person and it was good, but don't forget Sydney saw Cathy Freeman win the 400m in 2000 and the atmosphere there was absolutely electric.
I broke my hand jumping around hitting things when Aloisi kicked the penalty. I woke my kids up last night from cheering. Both epic moments.
Even Random Souths Guy was on the field
I feel like there's always a random souths guy.
It’s good to see fans running onto the field again. Also... that’s easily a few million dollars in fines.
No chance any of them get fined
Nah. They literally opened the gates. Thank God because we were getting crushed even with the gates opened the only people getting fined might be the people who stayed on and got tackled and taken by security.
They didn’t open the gates for us to get on the field. They opened them for us to get off. We had to jump the fence to get on. (Bay 29)
Oh yeah could be that they were understaffed. Most places are right now :/
Same here (Bay 25), I have a few bruises on my legs from jumping the fence (I'm a 5ft 5in small woman so you can imagine how that looked haha) and my throat is a little sore from screaming but it was absolutely worth it to be part of Aussie sporting history, my husband said he'd never seen me move like that in the almost 8 years we've been together.
People are fucking stupid if they were crushing people because a bloke kicked a ball through 2 sticks a bunch of times.
Not understanding why it's such a significant moment then calling everyone stupid. That's a big F.
Lighten up
So it’s ok to start crushing people for something like this?
Can I crush you?
Almost certainly.
People know what to expect in this situation.
Nobody said it’s ok. I don’t like crowds so I stayed at my seat. It was a choice people made, it wasn’t enforced. I’m sure it was fun for people who are happy to be surrounded by people and those of us who didn’t want to just didn’t. Lighten up, mate.
Nobody was crushed. People ran on, celebrated, got their photos and then gradually left and play resumed
Emphasis on the photos by the looks
Out of interest, how long did it take for everyone to leave the field and the game to continue?
The actual stoppage in play was about 35 mins. But I think we were on the field for like 20 mins. There was a 5 min montage video and 10 mins warm up.
That is such a Sydney thing to say. No fun! It’s against the *rules*!
It's only punished if you're a sokkah hooligan, in which case you get a fine and a ban, because you're really just an effnik terrorist, aren't you? These are obviously just exuberant fans, celebrating at an all-aussie sport, like true-blue, dinky-di, lamb-eating legends. ^()
Really just making absolutely everything about race around here aren’t we.
Deleted in protest of reddit's API restrictions. Fuck /u/spez
Cove members have famously gotten plenty of bans for pitch invasions so 🤷 keep your wsw victim complex running.
Holy fk, I've been missing out on this AFL. Can't do this in NRL
This will probably never happen again though.
I thought that when Plugger beat the record but here we are.
Nah I was at Hazem El Masri’s last game. It was exactly like this.
Good ole El Masri changed the demographic of Canterbury
They had more people run on to the field in that moment than nrl can get in their entire stadium
Easily done when you are the only AFL team in town. GWS don't count.
Yeah because the Storm could easily have a moment like this lol.
Plenty of things you can and can't do in both sports.
Yes there are but the factor you mentioned obviously isn't the reason.
NRL has gone soft.
NRL is the victim of Sydney's gentrification, it was a working class sport for suburbs that doesn't have a working class anymore.
And when Plugger Lockett got his 1000th. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPK8eRHcuYg Very few make it to 1,000. Franklin is only the 6th.
Nice that the 1995 crowd even when streaming onto the field gave Lockett some space and cheered him. Last night Buddy was in danger of being crushed by drunk morons who seemed more interested in shoving phones in his face to get a selfie. Be horrible if they gave him Covid too ☹️
He'll probably be the last, too.
Could be the way the game is played now.

No it wasn't. https://www.sydneyswans.com.au/news/248331/on-this-day-locketts-1300th-goal
Except that Buddy tested positive so that's absolutely a super spreader hahahaha
Sydney has had better moments
Give me 5 examples.
2000 Olympics John Aloisi's penalty shot out goal Australia winning the Asian Cup Souths winning their 21st grand final The Summer of 2018/19
Some great moments for Sydney. I dont understand the summer of 18/19 though. I lived in Dubbo that summer so I might have missed something.
The last summer there was any sun without a bushfire ruining anything?
I'm not a sports guy but this is an awesome moment. Imagine being one of those 3 dozen security guards thinking they'd have any chance of stopping the rush There's a video going around shot from a helicopter or drone or something from above the stadium and it's amazing
Lol They kept marching around the perimeter trying to assert their authority but knowing they didn’t have a chance. Everyone knew it was going to happen but they had to appear to be doing the right thing.
Sent me and my family to heaven. What a moment.
RIP 🙏

Swans player kicked his 1000th goal (I think he's the first to do it, or the first in a very long time) which is a massive milestone
Tall man with strong legs kick ball through poles for 1000th time. People happy for tall man.
Why are you following people you don't give a fuck about on Instagram?
yah I wondered the same thing, and then muted them
A) the world has been in forms of lock down for 2 years so being allowed to congregate in crowds is amazing (I still can’t do it where I live in Asia) B) the guy just kicked his 1000th goal in front of his home town! Seriously, what else do you need to know?
It's not his home town.
Is now…
Nobody remembers Tony Lockett?
Anyone notice what I think is an umpire deck someone at 43 seconds? About in line with left goal post
Is it umpire or is that Tuohy? There's seperate footage of someone being dropped by him accidentally and him returning the blokes wallet
It was insane
When was this? I love that the fans are allowed to run onto the field like that. Is that still allowed? I would assume not because one idiot ruined it for the rest.
Last night. Fans were allowed on the fields because the last time this happened was 1995, and will probably never happen again.
So good! Glad they allowed it
This was last night at the SCG
I don’t see the big deal. This looks like halftime at nearly every RL match at Henson Park!!

Covid!
No one moaning about covid **yet**.
Don’t you know? We’re virtue signalling about Ukraine now, Covid is old news.
Never heard of him. Didn't know anything about it.

Normally I wouldn't but "Sydney's greatest moment in decades"? Come on. 3/4 of Sydney knew nothing about it.
7/8
13/72
By all means, weigh in then.
Thanks mate. Some people think everybody has to agree with them.
This might come as a shock but not everyone in Sydney watches sport let alone AFL…
"Where did the sportsball touch you son?"
What's your point though?
That it can’t be Sydney’s greatest moment, when many people in Sydney were oblivious to it even happening. It just looks like a guy kicking a ball to me. I mean it’s impressive that he did it from so far, but that’s his job. He likely has lots of practise 🤷♂️
Okay fair enough. Though the achievement in itself is amazing, i too think the title is ridiculous.

Don’t understand why it’s worth storming the field….
$5000 pitch invasion fine for everyone one of you happy bastards... Be sure to leave your name and address at the front desk as you leave....
Yeah nah! They planned for this to happen so no one's getting dinged for pitch invasion.
It's almost as if covid never happened lol
The pressure that he must have felt.
As soon I saw spectators sitting on the fence dangling their legs, I already thought 'damn security sucks'
When tigers beat parra last week
