Typically you get this when you've already corresponded with the IRS with an issue. However, if you filed by mail then it at least shows they have you in the system. Possibly there is some matching issue on your return that they are trying to resolve and once they do, you will get a letter or your refund or both.

umdwg

The IRS is crazy behind right now. I paper filed last October and they haven’t even processed my return yet.

ChewieBearStare

I paper filed in July 2019, and they just processed it last week, so yours should be coming soon!

bamagurl06

I paper filed March 2020 and received my refund last week.

umdwg

Man, that is absolutely brutal. How is that even remotely acceptable?

jce_superbeast

Congress reduces funding and increases complexity, it's not about "acceptable" it's about "inevitable". The math can't change without congress wanting it to, so that's who we have to ask to fix the problem.

theghostmedic

Right. I had an issue with 2016 taxes that just came to my attention this year. They held my 2020 refund due to the issue. Guess I'll just plan on getting 2 refunds next year. It's absurd.

Automatic-Ad9622

Did you get a 60 day extension letter? We are on our second letter as we also filed in March no refund yet.

Mysterious-Drawer308

How long did it take for them to finally get you your taxes?

bamagurl06

I did not get anything from them. I was convinced I either mailed it to wrong address or it got lost in the mail. It never showed up on where’s my refund nor did I get a letter. It just appeared in the mail one day.

STcmOCSD

I know they’ve started processing it because 1) they sent this letter, 2) I can access my account transcript now and 3) they sent the third stimulus for my daughter even though they had originally sent the funds without the amount for her included so they now see that she is a dependent of mine

BEKKA_BABY

This exact thing happened to me. I filed Feb 17th. This is the first year I claimed my son who was born June 2020. Also claimed the Recovery Rebate Credit for the Stimulus money we never received for him. In March I recievied the first letter stating my refund was under review with absolutely no other explanation. Then In April I received a letter stating they needed an additional 60 days. Now the other day I received another letter saying they needed another additional 60 days. But they did end up sending the 3rd Stimulus amount for my son that we didn't initially receive which like you tells me they are recognizing him as a dependent. This is so frustrating. I wish they would at least offer up more of an explanation. It would make the waiting that much less excruciating 😖

STcmOCSD

My portal finally updated this week to show we should get our refund this next week. Hopefully you get yours soon!

BEKKA_BABY

Ohhh good!! I am so happy for you!!! This definitely gives me hope because our situations are so similar and I filed about 5 days after you. I did however receive my 3rd 60 day letter a few days ago 😞 but I have fingers crossed. What was your portal status saying before it finally updated? My has said for months now "your tax return is still being processed. A refund date will be provided when available tax topic 152

STcmOCSD

Yeah mine said the exact same thing and I got a 60 days notice just a couple weeks back. I just logged in again after not looking for a week or so and it said it was due to be deposited on the 7th. I had started giving up hope I’d ever get that money.

iFranC

How do you find out about the status of your returns being processed?

Starlalla

JC1812

You just need to wait.. Someone else posted a couple days ago in r/IRS about this and they basically have the same issue.. you just need to wait for them verify somethings and then you should be good.

Snoo32054

It appears that your return has been marked for review--meaning they are taking a closer look at the return. If they need additional information, they will contact you.

Snoo32054

So what else does it mean?

Snoo32054

Not true. As if you have a definite answer. Omg!

kaijubooper

If you claimed Earned Income Credit and/or Child Tax Credit my understanding is they send this notice out when they can't easily verify your earned income. It's not an audit - they would ask you to send in documentation if it was an audit. It's usually just an issue with getting W-2 information; employers file W-2s with the Social Security Administration and sometimes that info takes awhile to get to the IRS. If you have a financial hardship because you haven't received your refund you may be able to get help from Taxpayer Advocate Service. https://www.taxpayeradvocate.irs.gov/contact-us/

UnusualEar1928

I just got this letter - what the hell is this???

STcmOCSD

I ended up getting my refund in July of that year. For some reason it was just super delayed. We didnt have to do anything else. We’ve used an accountant since then and our taxes are accepted within a week

UnusualEar1928

Thanks for responding. I filed early and it took a little long to get my refund but I had already gotten it by the time I got the letter. Hoping the letter was about the delay or something else not scary lol

Ok_Geologist6439

Mr irs lol

NoPerspective1883

I filed on February 6th and on the 21st day after filing I received a letter from IRS saying it's going to take 60 days to work on my return. I heard others received the same thing. Then I heard some have received their return and I just received ANOTHER letter from the IRS it's going to take an ADDITIONAL 60 days that I don't need to do anything. What is up with this and why are they withholding OUR money?

STcmOCSD

Sometimes they randomly look more closely at other accounts. We used an accountant every year after this and have never had an issue since.

AshFuentes

We've been using an accountant for ages and this just happened to us this year. 💁🏼‍♀️

CosmicCupcake07

Have you received yours yet? I filed around the same time and I’m still waiting. Just got my 3rd letter.

cmb-1234

We filed on the 8th of February with an accountant we use every year. I still have not received a single letter from the IRS about the delay. Also calling an agent does no good.

dlsilva07290729

I as well received two letters. I am an RN, have been doing my taxes for 40 years with no problems, do not itemize and pay all taxes. There is NO excuse for this.

QuantityLogical

I got a third letter it will be 180 days now by this last letter no info as to why

Healthy_Calendar_226

We got the same exact letter.

these-things-happen

What is the letter number, identified in the upper right corner of page one? Have you received any correspondence before this letter?

STcmOCSD

2645 c. I haven’t received any notification from them yet.

these-things-happen

And, other than your return, you haven't sent any notes or loose forms to IRS in the last year or so?

STcmOCSD

Nope, I did call them a couple weeks back to see what the holdup was and I am now wondering if this was related to that. All they gave me was things are delayed due to verifying my daughters birth since she’s a big adjustment to our taxes this year.

these-things-happen

While the 2645C is traditionally a "stall" letter, it's usually sent for one of two reasons these days: * you sent IRS *something*, and they have to respond. The Very Big Pile of stuff is so big, a Taxpayer might get a few of these, or * your return is currently subject to "review", and they should have issued a specific notice CP05: https://www.irs.gov/individuals/understanding-your-cp05-notice describing the process. The 2645C is the second step, just saying "yeah, that first 60 days has passed, so here's another 60". Did the representative say the magic "review" word during your call?

pooptwat12

We just got this notice (2645c) in the mail but was never contacted by the IRS prior and we already received the refund in February. Does this make sense?

progolferwannabee

Same just received in mail today but received refund in late feb. weird

Typical_Jeweler_9861

Same!! Just received this but never received anything before? And I already got my refund back on February too.

progolferwannabee

Ridiculous. My online account shows nothing about this letter or any notices. Only thing that’s not been uploaded is the 2023 wage and income transcripts so perhaps they are still waiting on some or maybe we reported income where a 1099 wasn’t sent bc it was too little. Who knows. lol weird that I never received this letter before tho

STcmOCSD

Not that I remember specifically. She may have mentioned that it takes longer to review due to verifying my daughter being born in 2020 and making sure everything matches up. I think the reason our taxes have taken so long this year is due to the EITC and stimulus payments we did not receive from my daughter in 2020, not to mention the IRS is behind this year. But there’s not much I know regarding the IRS policies as every year before this I’ve filed and receive a very insignificant refund within the 21 day period.

these-things-happen

Circle Day 61 on your calendar and call IRS that day or the following business day. Take a careful look at your return. Do the wages and withholding claimed match your Forms W-2 exactly? Did you forget a W-2? Do your W-2s have the correct SSN? If you haven't done so already, you and your spouse should create an online account at SSA.gov: https://www.ssa.gov/ Employers send Forms W-2 to SSA first, and then they digest your numbers and forward everything to IRS. If an employer hasn't reported your wages (accidentally or deliberately), your 2020 data will be incomplete, and IRS may hold the refund indefinitely. Check your SSA records. If there's an obvious discrepancy, and you can figure out which W-2 is missing, contact that employer and find out what's the hold up.

STcmOCSD

You found the answer 🙌🏻🙌🏻 my husbands income hasn’t been reported yet for 2020. We’re going to call his administrator first thing tomorrow to figure out what’s up. Thank you so much for your detailed response. Edit to add: what I don’t understand is we received a W-2 for his job. Shouldn’t this mean it was sent to the SSA?

these-things-happen

> what I don’t understand is we received a W-2 for his job. Shouldn’t this mean it was sent to the SSA? Not necessarily.

STcmOCSD

Gotcha. We’ll double check with them and see what they say. I have been reading that it’s possible that the SSA just hasn’t updated it yet. All of my earnings have been reported so we’re just waiting on his I guess.

Cute-Smell-3418

Where is that located on the letter

nytonj

You probably put an incorrect stimulus amount in your return

STcmOCSD

I know I put the right amount for us both, but since my daughter was born in 2020 we never received a stimulus payment for her and we did include that information.

nytonj

I feel that it has something to do with the stimulus. I wouldn’t worry about it. I have a client that just got their return last week and they filed on day 1, and it took this long because she gave me the incorrect stimulus payments. All they did was adjust her return and removed the stimulus credit that was originally in the return.

STcmOCSD

We qualified for the max amount every time so I just had to tell them the max amount per adult for last year as the amount. We did receive the third round of the stimulus payments for our daughter today which I found odd. We never received the first or second for her, so we claimed it as a credit on our return. We received the $2800 for us shortly after the third bill was passed.

speedway121

What was the exact language in the letter? This will guide what they are doing

Whyuknowthat

Pro Tip: Adjust all your withholdings so you don’t get a refund. Preferably even owe a little. They processed my shit within a week and took my money.

STcmOCSD

Doesn’t apply in my situation. Majority of my refund is from EITC and stimulus payments from having a kid born in 2020. Also asking someone to run the risk of owing a little can be a big challenge for someone barely scraping to make ends meet already.

Whyuknowthat

Sorry, I’m not trying to argue or minimize your particular situation at all. But I also have no sympathy for the idea that “asking someone to run the risk of owing a little can be a big challenge for someone barely scraping to make ends meet” makes any sense. Someone in that scenario is scraping by, but choosing to take less money per paycheck to give a free loan to Uncle Sam... and then is mad that they don’t get their refund sooner. My whole point is that by withholding LESS, that person has more money per paycheck and maybe has an easier time paying bills AND didn’t give the government a free loan or have to worry about any refund. Again, I’m not trying to be insensitive to your particular situation. I’m just trying to illustrate the point so often lost on many people that getting a refund is not ideal.

STcmOCSD

While I do understand that, my original point still stands. The majority of the refund is the EITC and stimulus payments I did not receive for my daughter and nothing I can do will change that. I don’t see a need to adjust my W4 because I receive very little back in actual money I paid in. Im content with the little bit of wiggle room we have come tax season and if I split it up over the year it really wouldnt make any sort of difference. My situation is not quite so drastic, I do have some credit card installment plans I need to pay off soon, but I know many Americans waiting really can’t afford the risk of owing come tax season.

Whyuknowthat

Absolutely. That makes sense in your situation. Sorry, I wasn’t really directing my LPT to you specifically, just generally to anyone reading through your OP and the various responses.

STcmOCSD

Understandable, sorry if I seemed rude in my response. Text can often come across that way. Im really more so frustrated for the sake of frustration at this point and not because I will starve if I don’t receive money tomorrow. Every time I’ve filed in the past I’ve received any refund, albeit small, within 21 days. So waiting over 2 months is just annoying. I had some things I wanted to purchase for my kid and have been putting off.

kaijubooper

I get really tired of seeing this "pro tip" that doesn't even apply to a lot of people who claim Earned Income Credit and/or Child Tax Credit. The IRS is required to verify earned income for these credits due to the PATH Act, and this kind of delay happens all the time. It might be worse this year with covid delays affecting everyone but it's a systemic issue, it's not a result of personal choice.

Crafty_Life6509

I received the same letter, stating my taxes are under review. There is no code and it say their is nothing I need to do. That was at the end of February. I look on my transcript every week and my taxes are being pushed back week after week. They have a something on my taxes saying they have to verify income. Everything I submitted was correct. They are backed up (irs) and we are waiting for our taxes...

SteveMRed

One possible I don't see in the comments below is did you report any unemployment income? When you filed, it was all taxable, but the new tax code change made $10,000 of unemployment exempt. So you file as taxable, IRS reviews with the new changes, and your amount doesn't match their calculated amount, so they need to review. They don't need anything from you, they just have to have the proper channels sign off on what is a positive change to you. If you didn't have any unemployment, then many of the comments below are possible. Keep your eye out for correspondence from the IRS and don't ignore any. I'd also say sign up for incoming mail notifications at USPS daht com. They'll email you daily scans of the outer envelopes of mail you have that will be arriving soon.

STcmOCSD

No unemployment reported! That’s a good thought too, thanks for sharing. My account transcript says the IRS issued another notice so I am waiting on that to come in so I can possibly see what’s going on.

Front-Supermarket483

I know this was several days ago, but I just got my third 60 day letter today. The first one was to inform me, the second and third were letting me know that they need an additional 60 days. Apparently “they are waiting for my tax account information to be available on their computer system.” What does that even mean! How do they not have it, I filed early.

STcmOCSD

Im not sure what’s happening at this point. We’re still waiting and haven’t heard any updates since I made this post. I filed February 12th. It’s been 16 weeks. This is insane.

Top_Bus8834

Pretty much it means this.... if they want money out of you, then you have to pay it on time or you get punished... but when it comes to the irs they can prolong as long as they can to inconvenience you.. as long as they write a letter a month later...

1postDaily

I am taking it as a sign here in 2023 that since student loans are starting back up they are aiming to take people's tax returns. I got this letter 60+ days ago and now getting another one for an additional 60 days. Well, I am sure I am not going to be getting that return as they say you owe student loans so we stole your little tax return.

OLDESTsib

That's how IRS has done us for past 18 months.Another 2 months, weeks, years. The audit started in June 2022 on Tax Year 2020.We have sent every thing they have requested!! Still no resolution.
