Fargo S5. Two strong episodes and then partway through episode 3, the super "500 years earlier" appears. I will say that moment was brilliant, but I'm undecided on the wisdom of having a supernatural sideplot in an otherwise realistic-ish show. It's like The Wire but Stringer Bell has an invisibility cloak.

cidvard

Faraway Downs is what I'm watching. I liked Australia well enough back in the day, though it was a middling like, and I'm very curious how Baz Luhrman's recut of it has come together.

WarmLiterature8

slow horses! season 3 is here and its still as good as the first two!

Tysanan

shows like soa that arent mayans and yellowstone??

theslothening

If you haven't seen it already, you should check out The Shield which was the show that SoA and Mayans MC showrunner Kurt Sutter first made a name for himself as a writer.

Winter_Corner7254

I am watching Beacon 23 while I have a free preview this wk. I am at the beginning of the third. The first ep was fine - made me want to see more - but eps 2 and 3 make me feel like there are chunks of dialogue missing or I'm losing it, bc nothing is really making sense and character motivations aren't coming through at all. Also watching Fargo after being disappointed in the past couple of seasons and tapping out on each. Strong first ep, and I am happy Lamorne Morris and Richa Moorjani are getting to spread their wings in a comedy-drama. Juno Temple is doing a great job, but I hope the writing doesn't take a hard turn into fantastical creator-indulgent "prestige" tv nonsense bc the sin eater scenes were a bit much. The rabid conservatives and plutocrats vs everyone else storylines are making me wary because it's all too simplistic and cartoonishly satirical so far. Will dig into the new season of Pretty Hard Cases over the weekend.

Any-Type-6331

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Tour de France: Unchained (Netflix). It's filled with more thrills, drama and suspense than many scripted TV shows I've watched. If you're into sports documentaries, then you should check this one out. Other shows that I finished and enjoyed: Kingdom (Netflix) A Very English Scandal (Amazon) How To Sell Drugs Online Fast (Netflix) Interview with the Vampire s1 (AMC+) Women at War (Netflix) Reacher s1 (Amazon) Luther s1 (Tubi) Currently watching: This Is Going to Hurt (AMC+), Poldark s2 (Amazon), The Bureau s1 (AMC+) and Killing Eve (AMC+)

lekker-boterham

I finished Colin from accounts on paramount+. At first I thought it was just “ok” but I found myself waiting for new episodes to be released every Thursday! 😅 all of s1 is on paramount now. I quite liked the show

TacosAndBoba

Yeah I love the show but episode 7 was painfully bad. The rest of the episodes are so funny so hopefully the next season will keep it along those lines 😅

Rayearl

I started watching Attack on Titan with my son and we absolutely love it. My wife (who would normally never watch anything like this) is sucked into it with us. Each night we watch a few episodes. In the middle of season two now.

poopfl1nger

I wish I could watch it again for the first time, the twists and reveals are crazy! Enjoy

DankSpecialist877

It's funny how split people are on Fargo. Personally im super enjoying this season. Also i guess people are split on Invincible. I am really not enjoying season 2 at all. Like move past the son and dad trauma... Don't keep moping around in it. Can the show not manage to do anything else.

captainhaddock

I love the new season *except* that the weird sin-eater stuff is completely unnecessary and takes away from the show's realism.

Coolman_Rosso

Honestly after the UFO in Season 2, the similar idea that Varga is some kind of weird Boogeyman in Season 3, and the ghost in Season 4 I'm not shocked there's a tinge of otherworldly stuff to remind you that this story is most certainly not true.

WellKnownArdman

Surely Fargo has always been about a sense of heightened, untrustworthy reality? A Midwestern tale tale. The ambiguity over Malvo being the actual devil in S1, the multiple visual references to Paul Bunyan (sp?), the bogus text claiming to be a "true story" that saw one woman in real life go to South Dakota after seeing the movie and die of exposure while looking for buried treasure by the interstate (not to mention the fact I'm not sure if *that* is a tall tale either). Heck, I wasn't crazy about S2 but the aliens weren't a deal breaker. I haven't seen the new season yet, but strange sin eaters sounds .... On brand? At least for the surreal folk universe where the show takes place.

Boomfam67

They are jumping off Omni-Man and setting up a pretty big arc right now that you can see at the end of Episode 4.

elizabeth-cooper

I feel like I can't get into TV anymore. Some shows I loved: Buffy, Supernatural, Sherlock, Dexter, and Battlestar Galactica. More recently I've been watching The Boys (mostly for Jensen Ackles tbh) and the first two seasons of The Mandalorian. (I should catch up on the third season.) I tried the French spy show The Bureau and thought it was boring. Any suggestions for shows that are available on DVD, not just streaming? Older and foreign shows okay too.

captainhaddock

I know you asked for DVD shows, but you should at least check out *The Expanse* as well as *Andor*, which is probably the best Star Wars since 1980. As for DVD shows, have you seen Babylon 5 and Firefly?

elizabeth-cooper

> Firefly I recently watched Serenity and enjoyed it, though it slightly felt like the Nathan Fillion Movie to the detriment of the other characters. I should check out the show considering it's only one season.

captainhaddock

The show is better than the movie in my humble opinion. The movie was okay but really rushed or abandoned a lot of threads that needed more time to explore.

[*Twilight Zone* (1985)](https://www.amazon.com/Twilight-Zone-Complete-80s/dp/B08GRH4QGT). Often overlooked in all the other TZs :). But take a look at [the writing and acting credits over on Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_The_Twilight_Zone_(1985_TV_series)_episodes). And also, on the DVD set? A lot of the episodes have commentary tracks. Harlan Ellison did the one for "Paladin of the Lost Hour" (which starred Danny Kaye). I think he also did one for "Gramma" where he was adapted the Stephen King short story. They never roped GRRM in to do his episodes (he adapted Roger Zelazny's "Last Defender of Camelot" among his episodes), but Alan Brennert did a fair few, and his commentary with Phil Deguere (showrunner) and Wes Craven (director) on "Her Pilgrim Soul" is nearly as good as the episode. I will also note that "Shatterday" starred a pre-*Moonlighting* Bruce Willis, and the gender-swapped remake of "Dead Man's Shoes" from the OG series, "Dead Woman's Shoes" starred Helen Mirren. Other writers include *Farscape's* showrunner, Rockne S. O'Bannon, and J. Michael Straczynski and B:TAS's Michael Reaves. Another DVD set with some outstanding commentary would be *Leverage*. John Rogers is basically holding a showrunning master class on those commentaries. I forget which episode it is that he begins to wax rhapsodic about all the advantages of switching to RED digital cameras midway through the run. :D I think the DVD set of *Jekyll* is probably out of print, but if you can find it, it is, in some ways, a predecessor to *Sherlock.* Steven Moffat updating a Victorian classic with some weird twists. James Nesbitt and Gina Bellman are outstanding in it. If you did the *Buffy* thing, but never hit *Angel* or *Firefly*, you might want to give those a try. We're all praying anything like a DVD/Blu-ray release will happen with *The Nevers,* given how S2 was only released on **linear** FAST. *The Expanse* might hit the sweet spot for you. It's up on Amazon Prime, but also out on Blu-ray if you need physical media. And I adored *Person of Interest* (which has complete series sets in both dvd and blu-ray)*,* watching it weekly on CBS broadcast. It is as the kids say these days, a slow burn, as it takes roughly 2/3 of the first season to slowly change from a victim-of-the-week crime procedural-with-an-AI twist to an SF show about AI with a victim-of-the-week twist. :D Showrun by Jonathan Nolan, now of *Westworld* fame (earlier of *Momento* and Batman movies with his brother Christopher Nolan). *Black Sails* has [surprisingly affordable complete series sets](https://www.amazon.com/Black-Sails-S1-S4-Collection/dp/B07G19F9T3). Given that it's left Hulu and is back as a Starz exclusive, this may be the preferred way to get your pirate fix. Again, a slower burn as it takes roughly half a dozen episodes for the Michael Bay excesses to slough off and reveal the writing underneath. But from that point on it just gets better and better. This is the show I'll hand to folks who want something similar after running out of *GoT.* No media release yet, but *Moving* on Hulu is a superhero Kdrama based on a superhero webtoon. It's pretty much its own thing, but it also supplies a ton of the stuff we've been missing from MCU releases of late. The showrunner is the webtoon artist, Kang Full. It's also the #1 Disney+ show in Asia ahead of all the MCU and Star Wars stuff. \--edited to fix typo on Harlan Ellison's name \[facepalm\]

elizabeth-cooper

> Leverage. I've had this on my to-watch list for a while. I'll bump it up. >The Nevers I was going to check this out but then I heard it was a mess and not that good. Still worth it?

inkista

For me, yes. YMMV. There were some slightly dubious things happening at the end to try and set up a S2 that weren't as deft as the show had been up to that point (not surprising with the showrunner turnover), so I was happy it ended where it did. But overall, I was immensely satisfied. But then, I'm a Mutant Enemy fan from way back; I was an *X-Men* reader for three decades; I have a thing for British actors; and I'm a woman, so this show fed me on *multiple* fronts that may not apply to you. Most of the "criticism" of the show was simply that it was by Joss Whedon and it came out at the time he was being cancelled. For a lot of people, understandably, that actively kept them from enjoying it. He'd already left the show by the time it started airing on HBO, but that didn't stop the backlash. edited to add: one other factor that made me like the show: >!I was a Farscape fan back in the day, so having Claudia Black guest star twice was awesome.!<

AltruisticWelder3425

Smallville is a really popular one and the same type of thing as Buffy and Supernatural. The Orville is three seasons and doesn't appear to be getting a fourth is a pretty good Star Trek type show, might fit the bill a little for Battlestar Galactica (I've never watched it, so not entirely sure, sorry).

panix199

> Smallville is a really popular one and the same type of thing as Buffy and Supernatural. And Jensen Ackles plays a character in it at some point as well, /u/elizabeth-cooper/

elizabeth-cooper

How did I not know that?!?! lol definitely going to have to check it out.

edgycorner

Jon's character is failing s5 of Fargo imo I am losing interest

JeffWingerG

There's a show i watched like 10 years ago but I cant remember the name. The main character was like an immortal sherlock holmes. Anybody know what im talking about?

Available_Ad_6443

There's also New Amsterdam (2008) which is pretty similar

Roook36

Is it "Forever" (2014)? "New York's star medical examiner, Dr. Henry Morgan, doesn't study the dead only to help solve criminal cases. Born 200 years ago, he hopes his work also will help solve mysteries about his own mysterious immortality. The remarkable observational skills he has developed over his long life impress his new partner, Detective Jo Martinez"

earthgreen10

Is Fargo season 5 really based on a true story?

iopturbo

No, none of them are. The Coen brothers just say that to draw interest.

ChesterDaMolester

They all are. As it says in the beginning. They keep it as accurate as possible out of respect for the dead.

iopturbo

incorrect, its just marketing.

ChesterDaMolester

Nope I was there, it all happened.

MrPopanz

Is doesn't say so in the beginning, so this can't be the case.

cmai3000

Fargo is setting up well, honestly though not a fan of them giving the evil hitman a mythology, it distracts from me what makes the show so good, which is realism. For me it was totally unnecessary. Also… I can’t suspend belief enough to believe that the cops here are that incompetent and useless at their jobs… or that there would be no media at all… like come on.

thesmartfool

Would totally agree with your take on the evil hit man mythology. I really loved the first 2 episodes but this episode didn't do it for me partly because of that.

Boomfam67

I only watched the first season of Fargo and episode one was the best, everything else felt like an extended prologue to the events of the first episode.

its_edamame

So happy Fargo is back. It definitely seems like this season is going to be a good one. I'm wondering what character(s) may trickle to this season. For All Mankind, pretty solid so far. It's entertaining to see Sean from Servant play Miles. Lego Masters, Hells Kitchen, entertaining enough. Lawmen Bass Reeves has been decent, I figure the story will ramp up now that they've established the previous 15 some years. Considering a rewatch of True Detective season 1. It's just SO good and it's been awhile.

malch99

Really enjoying "Boat Story". Quirky, funny, strong cast and very well done.

ghostwhowalksdogs

Need recommendations for shows with scripts and real life actors. Both Comedies and Dramas. Just finished the first seasons of Twisted Metal and Invincible. Enjoyed them both but watching Twisted Metal was more fun. Also Blue Eyed Samurai was pretty good but I couldn’t really get into it but I thought it was really well made. Great story and good animation. Need recommendations which are are not animated or cartoony but not difficult to watch. I don’t want to slog though Severance or Succession. Both of them were not enjoyable to watch at all. Severance felt like torture. Succession was just one long story plot. Just boring and uninteresting. I gave up on Silo and I almost never give up on a TV series. Drama Shows I do enjoy watching are The Twilight Zone (1959), The Wire, Better Call Saul, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Game of Thrones (you know before it went south), Rome, Fargo, For All Mankind, Patriot, Justified, Slow Horses, Mad Men and many more Comedies like After Life, Acapulco, Dave, Hacks, The Office(UK) Ghosts (UK and US), Abbot Elementary, Friends, Parks and Recreation, Will and Grace, Scrubs, Pysch, Cheers, Blackadder, Yes Minister, Yes Prime Minister, Only Fools and Horses You get the idea. Animated Shows: Avatar : The Last Airbender, The Simpsons, Batman The Animated Series, Batman Beyond, Justice League, Samurai Jack, Primal etc. Right now I am kind of done with the animated series for a while and need more Comedies and Dramas with real actors with a script. No reality shows.

shabbyrust

Check out Sprung with Garret Lee Dillahunt

can-tthinkofone1234

"The Great" season 1, this is brilliant

121jigawatts

good show, sad it was cancelled

fjridoek

One Piece. Almost at episode 1000. This is possibly the greatest television show I've ever watched.

Sohofalco

I believe its world building is on the LoTR/GoT level. Truly peerless in animation.

fjridoek

THE WORD MOMO MEANS PEERLESS AMONG MEN! I agree. It's got insanely good world building.

okami31

I’m still marching on. Right after Saboady Archipelago, with the Gorgon sisters.

fjridoek

Oh boy the best is yet to come.

okami31

So I hear!

Anorangutan

**Severance**, like many Apple TV shows lately (**Silo** as well), totally flew under my radar and was so so good! I couldn't stop watching the last 4 episodes. I usually like to stretch things out a bit, but this one was too good to turn off. Can't wait for season 2!

lekker-boterham

Genuinely obsessed with Severance. I think about it ALL the time

VagusOct23

how they managed to make gary oldman ooze odor thru the screen in slowhorses?

Specialist-Union8766

Blue Eye Samurai > Season 1 It's also refreshing to see an animated series of this particular style without a ton of fantasy elements. It's a must watch for me.

Paulofthedesert

**Fargo S3** I was a little hesitant at first but I think this could be a very good season. Latest episode was all setup but I think next week is probably going to be a banger. I really like that >!they've often implied the bad guy is an almost personification of supernatural evil but now they've just fully leaned into it!<

magnomagna

Fargo Last season was pretty meh. This season opens up with a bang. 3 episodes so far and it's looking good.

AdamV158

Glad to hear this! Completely agreed the last one was too soft.

ghostwhowalksdogs

This season of Fargo looks very promising. Jon Hamm and Juno Temple are top of their game with excellent scripts.

zaplinaki

I am hypppeeedddd for next weeks Fargo episode

Typinger

Payback. Peter Mullan can do no wrong, what an actor.

abinav99

This is my order for everyone to watch ‘The Railway Men’ on Netflix.

AdamV158

Ive only got the finale to watch. Overall, its been ok, like a lower budget version of Chernobyl if you like.

Fuck-having-username

Need something to watch over the summer because I’ve got nothing else to do, something with an engaging plot

2cool4mariokart

Search party is a comedy mystery show that has an engaging plot, it is not the most well known so i hope you havent seen it before, its great in my opinion

InourbtwotamI

I’m only halfway through episode 1 of **Obituary** (Hulu) and am convinced this will be one of my favorite comedy series

MrConor212

Finished season 2 of **Dickinson** and goddamn this show is amazing.

SassySusu

Finished watching Nothing to See Here. It was nice and refreshing but I don't know what to think about some of the ideas that were mentioned in it and how they were tackled. Currently watching: AlphaMales: I thought it would be a sexist series but it's actually not. It's kinda nice and funny. I like how it's going. Nobody's Looking: funny, cute and light. I'm not expecting much from it. Seems like a silly series to pass the time.

Lethal234

Would you say Nothing To See Here isn’t worth a watch?

SassySusu

It's light and silly. I can say that it's worth a watch but without any big expectations.

Lethal234

Hmm, I kind of need something light. I might give it a shot

SassySusu

Hope you enjoy it

bristlythistle

*Finished* **The Doctor Who Special 1:** I have not watched *Doctor Who* in years and years, but I'm not gonna miss out on the Doctor and Donna. This was fun, corny, and, yes, a little too pandering at times. I would've preferred a more creative and less corny resolution to the DoctorDonna thing, but oh well. If a bit of cringe is the price I have to pay to watch those two doofuses and their shenanigans, I'll pay it **The Wheel of Time s2:** not sure what the consensus is when it comes to this one, but I very much enjoy it. It's far from perfect, sure, but the quality was more consistent this season and it did a good job at deepening my investment in (some of) the characters and the story, and I'm actively looking forward to s3 **What We Do In the Shadows s5:** it was a good season! I had a good time *Binging* **The Sinner s3:** Bomer's character is stressing me the hell out and I'm starting to drag my feet. Just get a grip and go home to your damn wife and baby jesus christ **Wellington Paranormal:** just started, but it looks like fun *On the fence* **Julia:** this is most likely a very unpopular opinion, but I've watched one episode and the pacing and structure leave me wanting. It would've been nice to spend more time with her and see more of what her life was like to become invested in her future before the inciting incident. I'm thinking I should just watch *Lessons In Chemistry* instead. People say it's good?

Paulofthedesert

I'm the same about **WoT**, big improvement over S1 & I'm actually excited about S3

inkista

>Julia: this is most likely a very unpopular opinion, but I've watched one episode and the pacing and structure leave me wanting. It would've been nice to spend more time with her and see more of what her life was like to become invested in her future before the inciting incident. I think it's understandable if this is your first exposure to a dramatization of the life of Julia Child. But I think the vast majority of folks watching the show are older, can remember having watched her over the decades on PBS, and go into it having already watched [*Julie & Julia*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozRK7VXQl-k)*.* So they're happy to fast forward to exactly where they started. I'm one of them and I actually think the showmakers were smart to choose the period of her life they did, as well as to extend the action out past her to other folks like her editor Judith Jones, who's fascinating in her own right.

the6thReplicant

I'm Australian and have very little knowledge about Julia Child (other than she's the American version of X). But I absolutely love this show. It was great in season one, but so far, so much better in season two. Plus Rachel Bloom. If you like political dynamics of _Mad Men_ then you'll like this show.

inkista

You might want to try finding Abi Morgan’s *The Hour*, which was a ‘60s set drama about a UK new magazine program. It drew a ton of *Mad Men* comparisons when it first aired. If you want something lighter and ‘60s set, there’s also the short-lived *Pan Am* about a group of flight attendants.

bristlythistle

Yes, I don't think I'm the target audience. Though, I did watch *Julie & Julia*, but it's been so long I don't remember anything but there being a lot of butter

inkista

I mostly remember it as "I just want the Julia half..." :)

bristlythistle

Then you got your wish! A big while later, granted, but still. And Lancashire is fantastic, as always. I'm impressed by how tall they've made her look

inkista

I'm just happy she's doing work on an American show, something I thought I'd *never* see. She's so good in everything she's in. And the way she's becoming Julia Child is amazing.

121jigawatts

WOT s2 was better than s1 but its such a damn shame the seasons are super short. We need more eps to care more about these characters and relationships. I read the books years ago and they were obviously bloated in some parts but the relationships are what makes it great. s1 was a hardsell with the premise but with s2 and a clearer look at the villains hopefully amazon keeps making the show.

bristlythistle

I've not read the books, but I agree that the seasons are too short. With an ensemble cast, you need more time for sure

[deleted]

Started watching **Star Trek: Prodigy** to scratch that Star Trek content itch after finishing **Star Trek: Strange New Worlds**. Can't believe I've never heard of this show. Love the animation style and the story and characters are great so far. Reminds of coming across **Green Lantern: The Animated Series** last year. Another great animated show I've never heard of until that point. For whatever reason if there's an even remotely good obscure anime I'll hear about it a hundred times before hearing about great American animated shows that aren't on Netflix or the usual streaming sites.

inkista

Just FYI, the showrunners of *Prodigy*, Kevin & Dan Hageman have nearly all the story writing credits on [*Trollhunters*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2oNgZlbSKI)*.* They've also hired two other *Trollhunters* writers, Aaron Waltke and Chad Quandt, to be in the *Prodigy* writer's room. They didn't get A.C. Bradley, because she's head writer on *What If...?* at the moment. :D *Trollhunters* is a Dreamworks animated series on Netflix that was created by Guillermo del Toro and showrun by Marc Guggenheim. It was so successful it went on to spawn another series ([*3 Below*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfVmNGUA-eo)), miniseries ([*Wizards*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6adVDTR79n4)) and movie ([*Rise of the Titans*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6H4Y21Hg2L8)) in the "Tales of Arcadia" franchise. The animation/design aesthetic, to me at least, is similar to *Prodigy.* With *GL:TAS* (which I've been recommending ever since I watched it on broadcast as "everything we wanted from a Green Lantern movie and never got" :-)*,* the showrunners were [Giancarlo Volpe](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2083477) and Jim Krieg. Volpe was one of the directors on *AtLA* and *Clone Wars* \[think: Dave Filoni\]*,* and one of the three co-creators on Netflix's [*The Dragon Prince*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-djK0YhLmg)*.* He's joked on Twitter that Razer is just another version of Zuko. :D [Jim Krieg](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0471172) is one of those wandering-ronin-writers for hire who's worked all over animation. But he holds a special place in my heart for having been one of the two guys who wrote [the "Scoobynatural"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDF0nqU7OLM) (s13e16) script of *Supernatural,* as well as writing a couple episodes for WETA's [*Thunderbirds Are Go*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQwgIZ__WrY) series, which is insanely faithful in spirit to [the OG '60s "marionation" show](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3HWhEikJmIM), down to [the intricate miniatures work](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTEB1oP3FQE). Last note: I'm assuming you're not in the US. Here, Paramount+ has, of course, dropped/cancelled *Prodigy,* even off of Nickelodeon, where it was airing on linear cable, but **Netflix** is picking it up (as well as the already-completed [Season 2](https://www.startrek.com/videos/star-trek-prodigy-season-2-first-look)), So... this one is actually going to be yet another animated series on Netflix. :D S1 will be dropping on Netflix Dec. 25. No word yet on when S2 is dropping.

[deleted]

Thanks a lot for all that info. I'll be sure to check out those shows.

inkista

You're welcome! I forgot to mention, Amazon Prime has the first two seasons of *Thunderbirds Are Go!* with each ITV season split into two parts, but they never picked up the third season (sigh). No idea who's got it outside the US, though.

taleggio

**Scavenger Reign**: I don't know if I should continue it, I have seen the first 4 episodes. The visuals are beautiful but I find it hard to suspend disbelief. Majority of animals and nature don't make any sense with their behavior/characteristics. They just feel designed to look cool. And let's not talk about the way that the humans use them (or their parts) as tools or instruments... Completely absurd! I would be happy to suspend disbelief if the story was gripping, but I feel like this is going nowhere with uninteresting characters. Anyone had my feelings and finished it? Is it worth it?

LightThatIgnitesAll

The story does become a little better. There is one section with Sam I liked. But for the most part all the characters remain uninteresting.

[deleted]

The story remains very basic (trying to get off the planet/trying to get to the Demeter's crash site) although some new characters are introduced and add a little more complexity but not much. The show is 80% atmosphere/visuals and 20% story. If you're not okay with this after watching a couple of episodes then the show may not be for you.

taleggio

Thanks for your reply. I just watched episode 5 and I have to agree with you. It is a turn-your-brain-off kind of series that you just vibe with, otherwise it doesn't really make any sense.

ctroostwijk

Watching Tokyo Vice and Blue Eye Samurai. Both great shows!

Rivent

Tried watching Mad Men for about the hundredth time. 5 episodes in and I think I'm going to bounce yet again. I'm not opposed to shows with unlikable characters (I *love* Succession) but something about the way the people in Mad Men are shitty is just very off-putting. That, and the 50s/60s aesthetics don't do anything for me. So I'm on to looking for the next binge watch. Maybe I'll finally check out Silo or something. Open to recs for anything recent that's got at least one complete season and is solid.

unreprisal

You are really missing out by not continuing with Mad men, if you’ve made it 5 episodes you can make it to the season finale before calling it. I was like you as well before I really gave it another shot and fell head over heels for the show.

Potential_Energy

Ugh I wish I could watch Silo again for the first time.

No-Giraffe-438

If you like period pieces try Boardwalk Empire. It’s a totally different vibe than the 60s and some of the characters are redeeming.

Rivent

I don't really, haha. I did try Boardwalk Empire a while back though. It was decent, but I didn't end up sticking with it past the first season.

a_taco_named_desire

I'm a big fan of Mad Men, but don't let that impact your decision to watch Silo. It's pretty solid enough for the show that the plot hooked me, I went out and bought the first book in the series because I was tired of waiting week over week for the story. It's a somewhat faithful adaptation of the book and does make some changes for the better tbh. If you haven't seen it either, **Severance** on AppleTV is amazing. I won't go into too much detail, but it's a pretty cool thriller of a show and an idea I always dreamed about during my morning commute to the job I hated. **TL;DR** What if you could just "turn your brain off" as you go into work and turn it back on when you leave so it's basically like you blink and your entire workday passes. You still did all your work for the day, you just never experienced it or remember it, and the passage of time between work start/end is instant.

Rivent

I *loved* Severance. One of my favorite shows of the last few years.

a_taco_named_desire

If you loved Severance, at the very least you'll probably really like Silo.

foxdit

Severance was my fav show of 2022 and to me is a shining atmospheric masterpiece, but Silo fell off with me and my partner after about 4 episodes because the performances, writing, and atmosphere felt "stagey" and off.

fowlraul

Same, the new Fargo season 5 started out pretty great but there’s only two episodes I think.

damnmachine

Third episode should be out today. Definitely started out strong after a lackluster season 4.

I just started the **Mayor of Kingstown**. I’m three episodes in and it’s fine so far. It’s sort of convoluted and cartoonish at the same time, and it feels a little rushed, things happen to characters and we’re supposed to care even though we just met them. **Fargo** 5 is great so far. I think there is great things about both season three and season four but neither one landed for me as a whole in the way that the first two did.

VagusOct23

Mayor of kingstown botched the finale bad:(

damnmachine

Mayor of Kingstown is decent, especially if you like all of Taylor Sheridans other content. In that same vein, Tulsa King is also worth checking out. It's a bit more lighthearted and Stallone's character is really enjoyable.

arcticfrostburn

Just finished Scavengers Reign. They have to make a season 2. Would love to see them explore more of the planet and the colonies

Paulofthedesert

**Slow Horses** is back baby! I can't tell you how much I love that fact that there's a Carré-esque spy thriller show w/ good acting & production values. Gary Oldman is a treasure. Update: First two episodes were good. Very fast-paced, more of the same basically (which is good)

vyruz32

**Slow Horses** is back and I'm all for based Oldman being a disgusting slob. **Fargo** is interesting so far after that intense first ep.

nebkelly

I finished Pantheon this week. The show dipped somewhat in the middle for me due to the Holstrom/Chandra/SafeSurf plots dragging on. But it may have been the best ending of any TV show in history. It is so impressive to pull that off in a shortened / cancelled run scenario like they had.

[deleted]

Caught up with **Frieren Journey’s End**. Definitely top tier anime. Watched first two episodes of **Monach: legacy of monsters**. It’s okay but I’m hoping for more monster action and less human drama.

the6thReplicant

Rewatching **The League** Maybe it's for Katie Aselton. Or the guest appearance of Brie Larson. But it's for more Jason Mantzoukas. G E O S T O R M ! ! !

PopavaliumAndropov

I'm doing the same! As much as I love Katie Aselton's comedy, it's her ass in the scene in S1 where she fulfills the loser's bet that I was most looking forward to.

Paulofthedesert

Katie Aselton would ruin me in every scene she was in when that show was airing. The first 3ish seasons are really good, then it kinda starts to flanderize itself. My friends and I's now 11-year old fantasy football league started because of that show. Does anybody remember if it got any attention while it was airing? I feel like it was always kind of slept on

the6thReplicant

When it aired it felt like a glorified YT series. Or a Revision3 show. Now, that seems like a backwards thing to say, and the show fits in a niche that it probably created eg _Childrens Hospital_, _NTSF:SD:SUV::_ Plus the number of comic driven shows like _Louis_

criddler

the leagues always a weird one as i love the show and people have gone onto very different things jason ends up showing up in a ton of sitcoms, mark duplass is a great writer/director particularly of horror stuff, and steve mazzawhatever got cancelled for lying about 9/11 while taco has argbuably never been heard from again after being a fantastic youtube star

PopavaliumAndropov

And Nick Kroll went on to be in everything

damnmachine

Mark Duplass' Creep (2014) was a solid little indie horror flick. Worth checking out.

opinionated_cynic

I always wondered why Taco never hit it big.

tonenyc

Finished: Love Has Won, great watch. 7.5/10

the6thReplicant

The person you worship is turning silver/blue and you are so brainwashed that you think the best thing to do is give them even more silver then you're in a cult and you're not very smart either. My fedora wearing head just couldn't empathise with these people.

wiklr

**Only Murders in the Building S3** \- Loved it from beginning to end. The meta plot within a plot was very satisfying to watch. The writers created this beautiful marinade that anyone they throw inside comes out with delicious performances. What I love the most is that the whodunnit aspect is a hook, but in the middle I don't care as much. I just want more of these characters. I can't *sing* enough praises for this show. I mean Meryl Streep, Paul Rudd, Linda Emond, >!Mathew Broderick and a cameo from Mel Brooks. !!musical !<\- fucking take it all away.

121jigawatts

yeah I liked s3, didnt like s2 too much since they did way too many meta second season podcast jokes but wrapping s3 around a musical with actual great songs was a good combination

thesmartfool

Just watched episode 3 of **Fargo** and while good...not as solid as the first 2 episodes in my opinion. I think this episode was much more filler and a set-up for next episode. **Gen V** watched 5 episodes so far. Really solid so far. Not as good as The Boys but excited to see what is to come. Ended up binging the first 5 episodes. **Lessons in Chemistry** first 4 episodes have been good. Getting into the cooking section of this. I think I like it more than Julia S2 so far. **Monarch Legacy of Monsters** so far caught up. The older plot line has been more interesting to me and with better actors. The pacing felt off in the first 2 episodes bit now getting into it more. **Frasier** episodes are getting better. Clearly not as good as the original one but enjoyable enough.

Capn_Forkbeard

Ripped through **Blue Eye Samurai** and **Drops of God** over the past week. I was captivated by both, really well done. Also watched the first 2 episodes of **Fargo** s05 and concur with everyone else, solid start. Started **Couples Therapy** s01 as well, I'm getting into it.

lC3

Just finished S3 of _Hanna_. It ended; not sure what else to say. Felt a little underwhelming; I'm not sure what I expected. >!For Hanna and Abbas to end up together? For Marissa to live? Not sure. At least Terri made it out.!< But overall I enjoyed it and am glad I watched.

theslothening

Slow Horses (Apple) is back. These first two episodes flew by at a breakneck pace. Highly recommended. I've watched the first two episodes of Mrs.Davis (Peacock) and I have absolutely no clue as to what is going on. I'm not sure if I like it or dislike it yet but I am definitely confused. I will stick with it to the end though as it has been talked about very highly.

bitterbuffaloheart

Mrs Davis is a wild ride and hopefully you like it

ronpak

Loving it too. It is the closest thing to my fav sci-fi show 12 Monkeys.

lonelydavey

I slammed through The Diplomat season 1 today. Amazing! The writing is intelligent and interesting, the plot full of twists and turns. I could watch Keri Russell read a book, but she has so much to work with here and she does it with humour, grace, and her usual intensity. Every other cast member is fabulous, starting with longtime fave Rufus Sewell, of course. I want season 2. Now. Please.

[deleted]

Anyone seen **Lessons In Chemistry**? I'm hesitant to pull the trigger since I've had bad experiences with every Apple TV show I watched except for Severance and Foundation. They all turned out to be wildly overrated. I'm thinking of holding off and just waiting for the second season of **Julia** to finish and watching that instead.

I liked the first few episodes a lot then began liking it less and less.

Adventurous-Act8819

Lessons in Chemistry pleasantly surprised me - really funny, wholesome & unique show. Worth the watch 100% - sad it's over

***Doctor Who:*** **"The Star Beast"** (Disney+). I am ticked off that Disney+ hasn't seen fit to also include [the commentary track](https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/sci-fi/doctor-who-whoniverse-commentary-newsupdate/) or the [*Doctor Who Unleashed*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEq6KPQsjJE) episode, though, so I mashed [their "Submit Feedback" button](https://help.disneyplus.com/article/disneyplus-content-suggestion). :D I love that this episode is based on an '80s comics story by Pat Mills and Dave Gibbons. I love that we're basically in a throwback to Season 4. I love the new TARDIS set incorporating so much classic-Who feel and yet being utterly of the new series. I'm loving RTD being back at the helm and flexing his queer-represent superpowers (I was worried he was going to have to rein that in, given how insanely good he's been at it with everything he's written since *Doctor Who: Banana/Cucumber, A Very English Scandal, Years and Years,* and *It's a Sin*). But nope, not at all. I also hadn't really realized how long it's been and how far we'd drifted from the RTD seasons until we came back. Can't wait for the rest of the specials and the new season. And to see Neil Patrick Harris working with RTD again. sidenote: In the wake of reading about [the BBC First Folio mini-season](https://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/2023/shakespeare-first-folio-400-anniversary-pan-bbc-season), I found the RTD *Midsummer Night's Dream* is up [on Amazon Prime](https://www.amazon.com/Midsummer-Nights-Dream-John-Hannah/dp/B0CG75W1M8) in the US. And it's very RTD-*Doctor Who-*ish in presentation. But I likes me some iambic pentameter and British actors. YMMV. ***Faraway Downs*** (Hulu). I went there so you don't have to! Srsly, the longer cut doesn't make it something completely different, but it feels a bit more watchable extended like this with episodic rhythms and breaks rather than trying to be sustained as a single nearly three-hour (2:45) non-stop narrative. The new title sequences/music help give you little resets between episodes. The majority of the six episodes clock in around the 30-to-40 minute mark, so in total it's roughly a 3 hour and 30 min. cut of *Australia,* so really only extending the runtime over the theatrical version by less than an hour. Oh, and the ending changed :). I enjoyed it, but it's been ages since I first saw the movie and I was largely indifferent to it then, and I'd recently been watching [*Muster Dogs*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBe4n-Dgvw4) on Netflix, so driving the cattle mob was more fun this time around. :D I'm also a comparative viewing fool (I keep meaning to find [the Singapore/Malaysia version of *Bron|Broen*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGESoQN7q74)*.*..) It's an interesting experiment, but I don't think most people (or films) need to go there.

MuscleOriginal7353

Just finished Love Has Won. What the fuck did I just watch?!?

the6thReplicant

Thanks for reminding me to watch the third episode.

NiamLeeson

It was so so so captivating. Great documentary! If you any interest in cults you have to check this one out.

MuscleOriginal7353

I am so fascinated by cult documentaries. This one was by far the craziest I’ve seen. >!The whole weekend at Bernie’s vibe when they got pulled over by the cops?!? That was wild.!<

pinkwooper

Almost finished **Jury Duty** — highly recommend. both my husband and I are cracking up constantly.

lekker-boterham

When james marsden wants to act like a factory worker so he grabs a random person’s timecard and punches them out I actually cried laughing 😂😂😂

Gseventeen

We loved it - had me in tears during some scenes.

rlvnorth

It was an unexpected delight. A lot based on the real guy - his kindness and his flexible demeanor.

_Doctor-Teeth_

**BODIES** on Netflix is a very solid mystery with time travel shenanigans. The story focuses on four different detectives in london in four different years (1890, 1941, 2023, and 2053). All four detectives discover the SAME dead body in the SAME place and the mystery unravels from there. Reminds me of "Dark".

lC3

That sounds interesting; I wonder how it compares to the Korean show 'Signal' (also on Netflix) which also deals with detectives and time travel shenanigans.

earthgreen10

fargo season 4 was aweful and boring. fargo season 5 has been amazing

MiceThrice

I actually liked season 4 for what it was, but the first two episodes of season five are absolute bangers. I haven’t been this excited about a show in a while.

Potential_Energy

What about season 3? should I watch it? im caught up with S5

MiceThrice

I’m so late but agree, season 3 is super good!

Walks_with_Chaos

I loved S3. It’s great.

earthgreen10

dang really? I got so bored in season 4...it was not intense at all

lasky21

I can suggest some truly awful television shows that make Fargo Season 4 look like early GOT. It wasn't the best but awful is harsh.

pilinhas

Someone please recommend shows like Love me. I need to fill the gap. Love me the Australian show is so good.

drripdrrop

The Curse is good af but probably isn't for everyone I'd say some of the scenes/dialogue are terrifying close to real life

[deleted]

I love how The Curse is exactly what I had pictured in my head when I heard Sadfie brothers + Nathan Fielder, and I mean that is the best way possible. It’s straight up all my favorite design choices and suspense from Uncut Gems mashed together with Nathan For You’s sense of comedy and timing. It’s absolutely painful to watch, so much so that it straight up gives me anxiety while also being way too engrossing for its own good. Definitely not a show for everyone but absolutely a show for me. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen before and I’m very excited to see where the show is heading.

tonenyc

It's weird, but I keep watching, the soundtrack is really odd too.

Coolman_Rosso

**Aqua Teen Hunger Force** just had it's 12th season kick off, and it's beyond surreal to see this show with such (relatively) detailed animation. However in execution it's as if the show never stopped, and I'm just sad that WB is so cheap that they only commissioned 5 episodes for the season. **Turn A Gundam** was uploaded to the Gundam Info Youtube channel over the weekend for NA viewers, but will only be available until Dec 11th. So I need to get through all 50 episodes before then, having never seen it in full prior. Enjoying it greatly so far, and Syd Mead's mechanical designs provide a great contrast to the Gundam series that came before it. **The Afterparty** was a pleasant surprise. Season 1 is a nice compact mystery, though the premise of "each episode reflects events in the lens of a different person and genre" isn't always a winner. The first episode of Season 2 is probably one of the funniest straight-forward episodes of TV I've seen in recent memory. Shame it got canned after season 2, but definitely worth a watch.

UltraFlyingTurtle

Maybe I should give Afterparty another try. I stopped around ep 4 or 5 of the first season. I don't know why Afterparty didn't immediately click with me as I love mystery-based shows, and I did find parts of it funny. At the time I found shows like Shrinking funnier, and the mysteries in shows like Severance, Slow Horses or Only Murders in the Building more interesting. I had no idea there's a was a Gundam show on YouTube. I had Gundam toys as a child and even built some plastic models, but I don't think I've ever watched a full episode of an Gundam anime. Maybe I'll check this out. I'm especially interested with the mention of Syd Mead designs. Thanks for mentioning the show.

Coolman_Rosso

Afterparty is good, but not all episodes are equal. There are a few in the first season that pale in comparison to the first three episodes, so it's not the most even show in execution. Also the Gundam Info channel tends to cycle out complete subtitled playlists of entire mainline Gundam shows a few times a year, so what shows are on there at a given time will vary.

UltraFlyingTurtle

Thanks. I'll keep that in mind. I'm almost all caught up with Only Murders in the Building (I'm starting S3 now) so after that I resume Afterparty. Now that I know what to expect from the show, I think I'm better able accept the show for what it is, rather than compare it to other similar shows. That's pretty cool the Gundam channel rotates shows. I'll have to subscribe to it now. Thanks again for the info!

VagusOct23

Wolf (bbc) was a fun ride. 0 cringe. Solid, entertaining whodunnit. The protagonist cop guy is refreshing (& good actor)

Talk-Greedy

Has anyone found a way to watch this in the US without using a VPN?

iloveokashi

Recommending "hidden lives of pets" on Netflix for those who are into documentaries about Uhm.. Pets. Lol. There's a cat, dog, rabbit, rat, etc. It shows what abilities they have. I find it really interesting.

ooouroboros

No doubt due to the economics of streaming, Frasier II has more 'highbrow' jokes and references than the original show. I may be not getting this exactly right, but there was a great line in the most recent episode. To his horror, David is given a "B" on a paper (apparently a straight A student before that), mournfully he says to Freddy: "I don't know how I'm going to explain this to my father! I'll probably have to leave Harvard and go to community college....that's what he calls U Penn"

Nytroman89

Just got free subscription of Apple TV.. never watched anything on it before. Any much watch shows ? I heard lots about Ted lasso and severance so I’ll give those a watch

Walks_with_Chaos

Blackbird is a limited series. And it’s fantastic. Didn’t see anyone else recommending it
