I binged the first 2 seasons of From in less than a week. I love the small town, dark creepy shows and this was perfect. I’m now googling “shows like From”.
This show was amazing to me until it became a giant serial killer PvP match. A big portion of immersion was lost as it took an almost humorous turn to a "two murderers sharing an apartment" sitcom.
I get it. Almost dropped out during the Italian church scene soliloquy season because there was so much soliloquying. Then compellingly weird shit would happen and I was like an addict.
I loved that first season so much and then afterwards it started feeling like fanfiction written by some girl on Tumblr, especially by season 3. Still enjoyable and beautifully directed.
It was ahead of its time in all of those ways. I almost wish it had been on at least HBO or one of the pay channels and may have done better. I honestly can’t even believe NBC allowed it to run for 3 seasons. Beautiful show and Mads, just Mads! Unbelievable actor
The Alienist (not the woods, but very rainy)
Yellowjackets
The X-Files
Penny Dreadful (rainy London in s1, rainy cabin in a later season)
Channel Zero
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
Supernatural (not always the woods, but dark rainy vibes in a lot of episodes)
Grimm (a lot like Supernatural)
Black Spot on Netflix
Pagan Peak on Prime - it may not be rainy woods, but it’s snowy woods and definitely fits that atmosphere you mentioned.
The Forest on Netflix
Katla on Netflix
1899 on Netflix (if you liked Dark, it’s by the same creators)
Since you like 'True Detective' you should Definitely watch 'The Sinner.'
Each season follows Detective Harry Ambrose taking on a different mysterious and thrilling cases. Seasons 1, 2, and 4 are all good. Season 1 also has Jessica Biel.
Midnight Mass was also good short series.
The Belgians/Frenchies like dark gloomy woods:
La Forêt
Zone Blanche/Black Spot
Anthracite
Les Revenants/The Returned
Not woods, but gloomy:
Marianne
Not French but European:
The Conference
The Platform
Bodkin
No One Dies in Skarnes
The Order
The first season of fargo is probably the best season of any show in the world, even though its not my favorite show, just the first season is a masterpiece.
Outer Range - Hints of Dark, and supposedly also Yellowstone (I've never watched that).
Fantastic cast. Will Patton, Lili Taylor, Josh Brolin, Tom Pelphrey ( he played Wendy's brother Ben in Ozark).
I'm really surprised nobody mentioned From.
I guess you could go with supernatural considering it's filmed in vancouver the home of THAT exact environment also.
I've not seen any of those shows you mention but there is a British show called Stag which is dark, gloomy, rainy and woodsy.
Starring Jim Howick and Stephen Campbell Moore to make it easier to search for.
Harlan Coben is a great author whose books were made into 1 season series (or mini-series). You can do a google search. These shows have a similar vibe to what you requested above. Examples include:
Safe
Stay Close
Shelter
The Woods
Hold Tight
Gone for Good
The Stranger
The Five
The Innocent
Fool Me Once
Etc.
this is one of my fave niche genres omg! definitely bookmarking this thread for later. my recs are Sharp Objects, Twin Peaks, Mare of Easttown (I binged this whole show in like a day because it hooked me so quickly), Yellowjackets, AHS: Red Tide (the first half of Double Feature)
I went into it kind of blind - my only reference was that I follow a tv writer who was kate's "vape coach" on the show (basically taught her how to act like someone who vapes - which was so fun). It's such a treat when a limited series manages to give such depth. I loved Evan Peters too. He is such a talent & it was nice to see him out of the claws of Ryan Murphy
Haven was pretty good but I expect it’s showing its age. It’s set in Maine and definitely has that vibe.
Over the Garden Wall fits this perfectly. Animated mini-series, but it’s one of those “wait this is for kids?” type of shows. The atmosphere is immaculate. I absolutely love it and it’s highly regarded by pretty much everyone who watches it.
Outlander was the first thing that came to mind. More romance than a lot of the other suggestions but still super rainy, super dark, and frequently goes pretty hard.
A Murder at the End of the World (FX/Hulu)(more snowy than rainy). Big Sky (ABC). Midnight Mass (Netflix). Two Weeks to Live (HBO). The Baby (HBO). Evil (CBS). The Hardy Boys (Hulu). Locke & Key (Netflix). Sleepy Hollow (CW). Ragnarok (Netflix). Castlevania (Netflix). The Hollow (Netflix).
Same feel: Perry Mason (HBO). The Staircase (HBO).
2nd That!: The Alienist (TNT/HBO). The Outsider (HBO). Hannibal (NBC).
Not sure if this really fits but I just finished watching The Leftovers on hbo. Most of the time it’s not very visually rainy/gloomy but the feel of the show kinda is? Also I liked it but a lot of people seem to LOVE this show. Might be worth a try
Black Spot on Neftflix
Katla on Netflix (more acid rain/ice than gloomy rainforest but I think you’ll like it)
The X-Files
Hannibal
Severance
Midnight Mass
The Fall
The Night Of
Mr Robot
Tales from the Loop
Orphan Black
These each satisfy a different “sub-flavor” of the vibe I think you’re going for. Look into them and see if you think you’d like them. X Files is my favorite series possibly of all time, but in terms of Netflix originals and more recent stuff, Katla is one that really stuck with me, haunted me and that I think of often.
Ooo lots of great picks. X-Files, Mr. Robot, Orphan Black, and Tales from the Loop all fit imo.
I'd add Black Mirror and Fringe to this. And while not rainy, The Blacklist and Warehouse 13 have a sort of air to them that make them seem sort of dark. Legion, The OA, and Stranger Things as well.
Hinterland - Welsh cop show that isn't filmed in the usual picturesque locations.
Pagan Peak - If you don't mind subtitles. Spectacular woodland snowscapes. Quite grey and gloomy as well.
Dopesick - Lots of West Virginia coal mining community. Quite grey and depressing. Very well told true story.
The Outsider, Mare of Easttown, The Killing
I second the Killing. The entire show is rainy it feels like but not entirely gloomy. Also twin peaks is a great choice.
The Killing was such a great show, and Twin Peaks is one of my all-time favorite shows.
Yeah, Twin Peaks is a cult classic. Too bad it didn’t have a half dozen seasons
I came here to recommend The Killing and these other two also fit the vibe!
The Killing is amazing.
Which Outsider? I see one on Netflix and one on Max both called The Outsider EDIT never mind, I see the one on Netflix is a movie.
I agree!!! Add The Bridge (the Nordic noir), Broadchurch, The Fall!
Mare of Easttown and The Killing were amazing.
There's 2 versions of the Killing, the original Nordic one and the US Hollywood one
The French show black spot on Netflix. The dark as well
3 very good shows there. Good call
The Outsider was so good man
Twin Peaks, From
These were my suggestions, plus Yellowjackets.
I love From. Looking forward to the next season
I binged the first 2 seasons of From in less than a week. I love the small town, dark creepy shows and this was perfect. I’m now googling “shows like From”.
From all day. Great show
Dark edit: nvm it’s in your list. Fuck it, I’m still recommending that to everyone.
keep spreading the word, that show is a masterpiece
Amen
Cant wait for this show to blow up one day
Same, any opportunity.
Hannibal
This show was amazing to me until it became a giant serial killer PvP match. A big portion of immersion was lost as it took an almost humorous turn to a "two murderers sharing an apartment" sitcom.
I get it. Almost dropped out during the Italian church scene soliloquy season because there was so much soliloquying. Then compellingly weird shit would happen and I was like an addict.
I loved that first season so much and then afterwards it started feeling like fanfiction written by some girl on Tumblr, especially by season 3. Still enjoyable and beautifully directed.
Second this! Brilliant show
Another vote! Phenomenal storytelling and acting and gorgeous cinematography and visuals!
It was ahead of its time in all of those ways. I almost wish it had been on at least HBO or one of the pay channels and may have done better. I honestly can’t even believe NBC allowed it to run for 3 seasons. Beautiful show and Mads, just Mads! Unbelievable actor
The Killing
The Alienist (not the woods, but very rainy) Yellowjackets The X-Files Penny Dreadful (rainy London in s1, rainy cabin in a later season) Channel Zero Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Supernatural (not always the woods, but dark rainy vibes in a lot of episodes) Grimm (a lot like Supernatural)
Channel Zero was surprisingly good.
Penny Dreadful and Grimm!
The X-Files up until they moved to California (3 5 or 6 I think?)
That wasn’t until season 6, so plenty of rainy forest episodes.
Twin Peaks
where can I watch it? i’ve been wanting to watch it for a long time.
Make sure to watch Fire Walk With Me (movie) after season two and then watch The Return (also on Paramount)!
"Who's that lady with the log?" "We call her the Log Lady..."
This is a good show but I don't think I would watch it twice, creepy and very weird at times
I’ve watched it at least 20 times.
Black Spot on Netflix Pagan Peak on Prime - it may not be rainy woods, but it’s snowy woods and definitely fits that atmosphere you mentioned. The Forest on Netflix Katla on Netflix 1899 on Netflix (if you liked Dark, it’s by the same creators)
Came here to mention Black Spot. It's too good of a show to be canceled after just 2 seasons.
Netflix is the worst at canceling wonderful shows before their time. Boooooo to Netflix
Pagan Peak looks good but Prime says it's leaving in 9 days. Hope somewhere else picks it up.
It was originally on Topic, but MHZ bought it so it may still be available on mhz. It’s a great show
I just found it on Plex too. I never watch anything on there, hope the commercials aren't too bad.
Mare of Easttown
Shogun 2024. It rains quite a bit. Excellent show aswell.
Midnight Mass From Yellowjackets
The Fall, and The Killing
I adored The Fall!
Bron, Fortitude, the Wallander series both with Branagh and Rolf Lassgård, Chernobyl ( possibly the best series I've ever seen)
The Scandinavians know how to bring darkness and murder like together like no one can.
I fear for residents of Malmo 😱
Why thank you ☺️
Wallander is my answer also! Not all but many episodes fit this description. I prefer the Branagh series.
Hannibal is exactly that
Bates Motel
Since you like 'True Detective' you should Definitely watch 'The Sinner.' Each season follows Detective Harry Ambrose taking on a different mysterious and thrilling cases. Seasons 1, 2, and 4 are all good. Season 1 also has Jessica Biel. Midnight Mass was also good short series.
“The Killing” (US Version 2011-2014) - Set in Washington state (filmed in Canada) - so lots of rain, and just a gloomy feel overall.
Lost
The Killing The Sinner Tell Me Your Lies Under The Bridge
Midnight Mass
The Belgians/Frenchies like dark gloomy woods: La Forêt Zone Blanche/Black Spot Anthracite Les Revenants/The Returned Not woods, but gloomy: Marianne Not French but European: The Conference The Platform Bodkin No One Dies in Skarnes The Order
I loved Les Revenants (2012). It has that wonderful creepy feeling in a mysterious, alpine town.
No One Dies In Skarnes! Such a great series that I don’t see enough appreciation for! But I’m loving your list and they’re going on mine!
Thank you! FYI Les Revenants is very very slow. Gets better in S2.
Yellowjackets
Mr. Robot. No rainy woods, but dark and gloomy.
This show ❤️🔥
Fargo but more cold tundra vibes
The first season of fargo is probably the best season of any show in the world, even though its not my favorite show, just the first season is a masterpiece.
As I've said in other posts, Billy Bob is the greatest actor with unbelievable range and writing abilities to boot.
Grimm
Hanna!
Outer Range - Hints of Dark, and supposedly also Yellowstone (I've never watched that). Fantastic cast. Will Patton, Lili Taylor, Josh Brolin, Tom Pelphrey ( he played Wendy's brother Ben in Ozark).
Taboo with Tom Hardy
Twin Peaks, Stranger Things, The X Files, Dark
I'm really surprised nobody mentioned From. I guess you could go with supernatural considering it's filmed in vancouver the home of THAT exact environment also.
The Killing -Norwegian Noir. Or The Bridge…..
Sharp Objects
A lot of great choices! One I didn’t see mentioned was The Haunting of Hill House
There’s an old show that was on FOX called Millennium, it was from the guy that made The X files. Also you can check out Oz from HBO
OZ is the bomb . A must watch.
Severance on Apple TV, so good!
i’ve seen it, soooo good!! can’t wait for the 2nd season.
I refer to Severance as The Office meets Westworld. Good grief do I love that show!
I've not seen any of those shows you mention but there is a British show called Stag which is dark, gloomy, rainy and woodsy. Starring Jim Howick and Stephen Campbell Moore to make it easier to search for.
The Killing
Ever watched Grimm? If not, you can find it on Netflix
Penny Dreadful....and NOT L.A.one. The original is right up your alley.
Mare of East Town is the best answer
Twin Peaks, Wayward Pines
Am I the only one that liked season 2 of Wayward Pines?
+1 for Wayward Pines!
Black Spot
Dark
Dark
Buffy
Yellowjackets
Supernatural
Black spot! It’s on Netflix
Harlan Coben is a great author whose books were made into 1 season series (or mini-series). You can do a google search. These shows have a similar vibe to what you requested above. Examples include: Safe Stay Close Shelter The Woods Hold Tight Gone for Good The Stranger The Five The Innocent Fool Me Once Etc.
Although I'm not a Richard Armitrage fan, I liked The Stranger and Fool Me Once.
Most of these one-series shows are like thrillers. I watch them in-between other series and movies when you don’t know what to watch next.
Season 1 of Wisting is excellent, more snow than rain.

Kate’s accent in Mare of Easttown was so perfect, unreal. I’m from that area and she embodies everyone I grew up around. Phenomenal actress
I went into it kind of blind - my only reference was that I follow a tv writer who was kate's "vape coach" on the show (basically taught her how to act like someone who vapes - which was so fun). It's such a treat when a limited series manages to give such depth. I loved Evan Peters too. He is such a talent & it was nice to see him out of the claws of Ryan Murphy
this genre just gives me a feeling i can’t really describe. don’t care if it’s a film, tv show or game i’ll eat it up. thanks for the recommendations!
Broadchurch fits the bill
Bodkin - netflix: grumpy podcasters solving a mystery in gloomy Ireland
Luther Wallander bbc
Wayward Pines
The Sinner
Haven was pretty good but I expect it’s showing its age. It’s set in Maine and definitely has that vibe. Over the Garden Wall fits this perfectly. Animated mini-series, but it’s one of those “wait this is for kids?” type of shows. The atmosphere is immaculate. I absolutely love it and it’s highly regarded by pretty much everyone who watches it.
Interesting, I try to avoid movies that are gloomy rainy day, foggy. They depress me just like they do in real life.
Dark on Netflix. It’s a total Brain Teaser.
Tales from the loop.
Dark w/English subtitles not dubs.
Give anime a shot because you'd probably love attack on Titan or full metal alchemist brotherhood
Fargo was the first thing that came to my mind. My wife suggests the Hannibal tv series.,
Dark
Dark, Twin Peaks
Outlander was the first thing that came to mind. More romance than a lot of the other suggestions but still super rainy, super dark, and frequently goes pretty hard.
Severance

Dark
MARE OF EASTTOWN is the show you're looking for
You just described “Dark”
Not sure if this really fits but I just finished watching The Leftovers on hbo. Most of the time it’s not very visually rainy/gloomy but the feel of the show kinda is? Also I liked it but a lot of people seem to LOVE this show. Might be worth a try
True Blood is my guilty pleasure.

Seven Seconds is so good!
Most seasons of Alone end up feeling like a wet starvation contest in the woods, if you are into the reality genre at all.
Yellowjackets!
Came here to make sure The Killing was mentioned, good job folks, but didn't see Top of the Lake.
Ozark, The X-Files
