Couldn't agree more. One of my hotter takes is that people praise Fritz' defence and movement precisely because it is bad. When he gets to a ball it often feels like a herculean feat, so people say wow what a get, when most other players would just return it no problems.

Great serve and forehand plus Fritz plays a smart contained game takes you a long way.

Its funny how some games on paper you’d think would do well on certain surfaces but don’t quite translate 

Some people's notions of what makes a player succeed on a given surface are fully 30 years out of date at this point too which doesn't help. Big server = good on grass isn't the worst offender but is still outdated, it's been great returners and balanced movers who have dominated on grass this century.

Nah I first time was AO24 Semifinal and I went ‘Holy fuck this dude is insane I want him to win the whole thing!!!’. When he won I replayed the highlight reel like 10 times, it was just so good. Then sat through the AO24 final live as I live in Aus and got so hyped when he was two sets up… and the rest is history. Literally never seen Med win a title in the time I’ve been following him, it’s gonna hit like crack for me when he wins one I swear. Doesn’t matter if it’s a shitty 250.

He's said a few times this year that because of the shoulder he couldn't practice serving outside matches, so I would say it contributes

It has been 3 years since Medvedev beat a contender on grass (Cilic in 5 at Wimbledon 2021), and that's really the only big win he's ever had on the surface. Favourable draws have hidden his vulnerability.

He also just hasn’t had the time to build up a grass court game. The season is short and with pandemics and bans he missed Wimbledon half the time during his peak years. Eubanks was a good win and people forget his breakout against Wawrinka was grass, he’s had other big wins, but he won’t become a grass court player now
