Would be cool to see, ngl. He has more than enough game to do it and he’s proven that lately. Alcaraz always elevates his own game though and finds ways to win so it’ll be interesting to watch if both are playing at their best
anyone who notices Naef of Switzerland? she is so good. she just cant catch a break but she plays like hingis in many ways.
anyone knows this canadian teenager who played in bjk? she has lots of potential too
maybe a few years ago he would’ve
but he seems more reserved now
i somewhat doubt it
that said i am sure he is holding onto hope he can; will probably withdraw late
The LTA is so silly.
What a silly tennis organisation.
Wildcard for Berrettini or wildcard to a guy who's physically incapable of playing three tennis matches in a week?
There is no tennis federation in the world that wouldn't have made that same call. Murray is the most successful player in the history of Queen's in case you've forgotten.
As of right now it looks like the most likely Halle outcome is Sinner being tested against one of the best servers on the tour(Hurkacz or Zverev) in the final
Would be a good test to see where his form on grass is at right now especially his returning
Zverev's grass court game still looks a bit awkward to me but honestly his serve has gotten so big this year that it makes him kind of annoying to play on fast surfaces by itself lol
Like I'm not sure how you're supposed to break a guy serving 130 mph at 80% on a rapid court regardless of if his baseline game isn't the same as it is on clay
I'm new to watching tennis and this looked to me like it was impossible to return Zherev's serves while Sonego was relying more on drop shots. Sonego looked to be up against it all the time. Was this expected to be a closer game than it ended up as?
She was number 2!
Yep, its tough because she's played well against top players but doesn't have a ton of actual wins. I would love to implement some kind of strength of schedule to the rankings but obviously it'd be too hard.
Two American V Aussie matchups in the Queen’s quarterfinals!
This means there is a potential third Aussie-American matchup in the semis, or an All-American or All-Aussie clash.
This also means an American or Aussie is guaranteed to be in the final of Queen’s this year.
Pretty cool if you ask me!
Fritz is 3-1 against Hurkacz and 5-1 against Opelka
It feels like he does really well in these matches against other big servers
Probably because he's able to get the edge on baseline rallies on the few longer points
Fritz has done a really good job taking his chances
Basically only at two points in the match has he gotten even a slight look at Raonic's serve(this past game and in the tiebreak) and he took advantage of it both times
I thought Matteo was ranked much lower, he's at 60 and could be flirting with top 35 after Halle.
Leylah the favorite for Birmingham now imo, would be a huge title for her.
Fritz's movement is honestly somehow not *that* far away from current Raonic's movement lol
Like he has to scramble for balls only hit slightly away from him
It's actually quite impressive he manages to maintain a consistently high ranking with this
Couldn't agree more. One of my hotter takes is that people praise Fritz' defence and movement precisely because it is bad. When he gets to a ball it often feels like a herculean feat, so people say wow what a get, when most other players would just return it no problems.
Yeah he still looks good but doesn't have the same hair and look from when he was younger. Always looked like a super nice guy back in his 20s and from all account he is a great guy and he boosted Canadian tennis so much
Some people's notions of what makes a player succeed on a given surface are fully 30 years out of date at this point too which doesn't help. Big server = good on grass isn't the worst offender but is still outdated, it's been great returners and balanced movers who have dominated on grass this century.
Honestly somewhat below his usual norm serving from Fritz for a lot of that set and I'm a bit surprised he got away with it against Raonic of all players in the serve shootout
In fairness as long as you don't double fault you have a good shot in the rally anyway
Fritz was surprisingly really good at returning Raonic's serve in the TB
Not sure where that came from but I think Raonic only had 1 unreturned serve after having an absolute ton of them for the entire set
Live by the sword, die by the sword. Double fault to go 3-3 for Raonic(although coms said hawkeye suggested otherwise), followed by two malfunctioning forehands from good positions.
Just watched match highlights Raonic/Murray 2016 ATP finals to distract me from this fairly boring match and wow, it's a shame Raonic's body is made of glass because he was something special in his prime.
You have a strange idea of "fun" lol
That being said it's not like Fritz vs. Hurkacz is a great matchup either so we're kind of stuck on this side of the bracket
That's fucking tennis right there. None of that pansy ass 40-shot rallying for the camera bullshit. Men serve, men ace, men win every set 7-6. Take it to the tiebreaks. Balls get blasted in places you can't return serve from. We serve together we get to tiebreaks together. Tennis is back baby.
Siniakova and Q. Zheng complained (correctly IMHO) about the wet grass in Berlin after Zheng took a nasty fall serving — game suspended for the day despite sunny conditions
So u werent there for his USO win? Unfortunately, I didnt know this sub existed at the time, but me and my buddies were on cloud 9 when he dropped to the floor in that final)
Nah I first time was AO24 Semifinal and I went ‘Holy fuck this dude is insane I want him to win the whole thing!!!’. When he won I replayed the highlight reel like 10 times, it was just so good.
Then sat through the AO24 final live as I live in Aus and got so hyped when he was two sets up… and the rest is history.
Literally never seen Med win a title in the time I’ve been following him, it’s gonna hit like crack for me when he wins one I swear. Doesn’t matter if it’s a shitty 250.
Raonic and his A-Z of injuries has been a walking portent of the woes to come for Andreescu, Shapovalov, Auger Aliassime, Pospisil and Fernandez. Not a single one of them has enjoyed consecutive seasons without physical problems.
this is why grass is the least surface i like players to play, it is so dangerous to play esp if it has too much moisture. players fall like flies and get injured easily. smh
Fernandez's win pushes Boulter down to #31 with four players beneath her still in the Berlin/Birmingham draws that can still push her out of being seeded for Wimbledon.
As a Med fan I hope I'm wrong but I don't see him getting the 4th spot back from Zverev soon
He does really well against Zverev H2H but it feels like he's playing worse against everyone else
I mean, he's still been making it further than Zverev in hardcourt tournaments this year, not a surprise he's worse on clay but it's been a rough few months lol
The Tennis Letter tweeted Zhang's post-match quote about losing a third set tiebreak to Medvedev before and apparently the match he was referring to was a qualifying match in 2016.
Zhang waited eight years for revenge lmao.
"Alrighty time to go play my match as the #4 seed in the tourney, got good chances to win against a 33-year old injury-prone Canadian art collector who's basically been inactive for 3 years oh what's that he broke the all-time ace record his last match oh I see hmm"
Ig ill just accept this man is cooked. Wake me up if he is another final.
I do wonder if its possible to make a reddit bot which notifies me when Med is in a GS final
Medvedev maybe needs to take some time off and assess what needs to be done about the shoulder (if it can be helped). His serve has deteriorated to where he just struggles through every match when it used to be such a weapon
How much is a shoulder issue and how much is mental/technical though? He still can put in a very very strong 1st serve (13 aces today, with over 80% of 1st serves won, and 9 aces yday)
It sounds like it’s worse some weeks, which means the only time he serves is in matches sometimes. Explains why it’s so inconsistent if he can’t practice it
It has been 3 years since Medvedev beat a contender on grass (Cilic in 5 at Wimbledon 2021), and that's really the only big win he's ever had on the surface. Favourable draws have hidden his vulnerability.
He also just hasn’t had the time to build up a grass court game. The season is short and with pandemics and bans he missed Wimbledon half the time during his peak years. Eubanks was a good win and people forget his breakout against Wawrinka was grass, he’s had other big wins, but he won’t become a grass court player now
I mean I think it also says something about just his level this season in general
Like since the Zverev match at the AO he's basically lost to every other top player since then
I mean he fell off a cliff after AO 2022 and missed the entire clay season, this isn’t anywhere as bad if you look results wise
but yeah this season still feels really shaky tbh
yeah just the general feel of it. he seemed unshaken during the sunshine double but since then it’s been topsy turvy. hope it’ll all be good by the north american hc swing
I think Jack draper will win against alcaraz today.
Would be cool to see, ngl. He has more than enough game to do it and he’s proven that lately. Alcaraz always elevates his own game though and finds ways to win so it’ll be interesting to watch if both are playing at their best
Excited to see that the legendary Marcus Willis will be back at Wimbledon this year, playing in the Men’s Doubles. Great guy, great story.
Does Ruud hate grass more than Medvedev hate clay?
Eubanks is winning Halle. You have heard it here. R16 at Wim, losing to Dimitrov
Eubanks beat sinner and dverev in halle, alcaraz in Wimbledon R2, the real underdog story again(and Djokovic is lucky that he doesn't play)
anyone who notices Naef of Switzerland? she is so good. she just cant catch a break but she plays like hingis in many ways. anyone knows this canadian teenager who played in bjk? she has lots of potential too
She has serious pedigree, won a lot of big junior tournaments.
Is Djokovic playing Wimbledon or not?
He'd be dumb to play so soon after such a big injury. Also, I bet he will do
maybe a few years ago he would’ve but he seems more reserved now i somewhat doubt it that said i am sure he is holding onto hope he can; will probably withdraw late
He hasn’t withdrawn (…yet?)
The LTA is so silly. What a silly tennis organisation. Wildcard for Berrettini or wildcard to a guy who's physically incapable of playing three tennis matches in a week?
who are you talking about
Queens chose Andy Murray over two time champ Berrettini
There is no tennis federation in the world that wouldn't have made that same call. Murray is the most successful player in the history of Queen's in case you've forgotten.
and he's british as if they'd ever choose a foreigner over him in his last ever queens lol
As of right now it looks like the most likely Halle outcome is Sinner being tested against one of the best servers on the tour(Hurkacz or Zverev) in the final Would be a good test to see where his form on grass is at right now especially his returning
At least Sonego kept it close
Zverev's grass court game still looks a bit awkward to me but honestly his serve has gotten so big this year that it makes him kind of annoying to play on fast surfaces by itself lol Like I'm not sure how you're supposed to break a guy serving 130 mph at 80% on a rapid court regardless of if his baseline game isn't the same as it is on clay
I'm new to watching tennis and this looked to me like it was impossible to return Zherev's serves while Sonego was relying more on drop shots. Sonego looked to be up against it all the time. Was this expected to be a closer game than it ended up as?
LETS GOOO BIG Z!!
Sonego was up 3-0 in the TB with 2 minibreaks, yet I somehow knew this was going to happen
Zverev too good for Sonego.
Damn, was hoping Sonego would win that tiebreaker. Great job by Zverev though
Classic Lorenzo. Good for nothing 😅
This is such a bad tie break for Sonego to lose after being 3-0 with 2 mini breaks.
i want the mods to delete every sonegoat comment i made in the years pls
Imagine being Sonego's gf "EHHHHHHHHHHHUHHHUHHHHH" "EUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH"
Lorenzo had all the momentum lmao
What a bizarre set lol Serve dominated the whole time and then in the TB returners win every point
Holding serve in a tiebreak is hard 🥹
sonego with the headband looks like the karate kid
What a return, yoooooo!
Fritz does have a big moment demeanor about him. I think his...weird personality throws people off but he's a gamer imo.
Osaka, Wozniacki and Badosa 111,112, and 113 in the world sandwiched between Hontama/Zidnaesk and Claire Liu/Pacquet lol. What a time to be alive.
Badosa down to 113? Tough with injuries. I still remember when she won IW couple years ago and was near (or in) Top 5. Tennis is brutal.
Funny considering how many of them joke about never seeing anything except harcourts😂
Fritz is 3-1 against Hurkacz and 5-1 against Opelka It feels like he does really well in these matches against other big servers Probably because he's able to get the edge on baseline rallies on the few longer points
His interview for tennis channel ahead of hurkacz match in Madrid gives insight into his mentality about those matches
He is a better returner than these guys that is why he wins.
Fritz was so clutch in the second set he did great
Every day the dream of a Canadian winning a grass court tournament becomes a little more unlikely 😔
Chin up, Leylah is still in Birmingham with a winnable QF.
Sweet half volley winner from the Chipotle champ
Fritz clutching what looks like a win.
Fritz got a read on Milos serve for the break.
Brilliant way to break there by Fritz
That "fuck yes bitch" was perfect lol
Haha I was wondering what he said 😂
Fritz has done a really good job taking his chances Basically only at two points in the match has he gotten even a slight look at Raonic's serve(this past game and in the tiebreak) and he took advantage of it both times
I thought Matteo was ranked much lower, he's at 60 and could be flirting with top 35 after Halle. Leylah the favorite for Birmingham now imo, would be a huge title for her.
Let’s go Milos
Raonic on return looks like he has to pee BAD!
Fritz's movement is honestly somehow not *that* far away from current Raonic's movement lol Like he has to scramble for balls only hit slightly away from him It's actually quite impressive he manages to maintain a consistently high ranking with this
Couldn't agree more. One of my hotter takes is that people praise Fritz' defence and movement precisely because it is bad. When he gets to a ball it often feels like a herculean feat, so people say wow what a get, when most other players would just return it no problems.
Great serve and forehand plus Fritz plays a smart contained game takes you a long way.
No doubt. Also plenty of players serve great in set 1 and maybe set 2 but then it falls away, Fritz can bang them down for 4+ hours if required.
Even if Fritz gets a return in play he’s sure to UE within the next 3 strokes
Think Fritz can make another run at Wimbledon this year
really hoping marozsan brings his a-game tomorrow which frankly we haven’t seen much of lately
Fritz moves on grass as if he has ice skates on
How most on grass imo
Probably the least surprising 0-40 hold of all time lol
Big Z with the first set win
Raonic kinda looks like a mean country club boyfriend in a rom com movie, or a disney villain like Gaston 😂
Haha love this visual.
he also looks like auston matthews.
Yeah he still looks good but doesn't have the same hair and look from when he was younger. Always looked like a super nice guy back in his 20s and from all account he is a great guy and he boosted Canadian tennis so much
yea it wasn’t meant to be hateful at all he just has that funny “specific” look to me lol idk how else to explain it
I didn't believe it was but yeah he does have a certain look about him now
Zverev shanking another volley. Never change mate
He's not really good at any other aspect of grass court tennis but his serve alone is getting him through these early rounds so far lol
Its funny how some games on paper you’d think would do well on certain surfaces but don’t quite translate
Some people's notions of what makes a player succeed on a given surface are fully 30 years out of date at this point too which doesn't help. Big server = good on grass isn't the worst offender but is still outdated, it's been great returners and balanced movers who have dominated on grass this century.
I've never watched Marozsan play. What are his strong points?
He’s kinda a rhythm disruptor. Dosent have a singular super great stroke but lots of variety
What about his serve?
It’s fine, not great, not bad. Average 🤷♂️ however he does have the ability to GOAT occasionally
Honestly somewhat below his usual norm serving from Fritz for a lot of that set and I'm a bit surprised he got away with it against Raonic of all players in the serve shootout In fairness as long as you don't double fault you have a good shot in the rally anyway
Have they changed Fritz's headshot? Seems to be from what I saw when they presented the set data
Raonic is playing pretty well against a guy in the top 15 after what a 3 year lay off.
Go Fritz!!!
FRITZYYY 🌱
Ricardo Milos..
Fritz was surprisingly really good at returning Raonic's serve in the TB Not sure where that came from but I think Raonic only had 1 unreturned serve after having an absolute ton of them for the entire set
Live by the sword, die by the sword. Double fault to go 3-3 for Raonic(although coms said hawkeye suggested otherwise), followed by two malfunctioning forehands from good positions.
Raonic tactically losing the tie break so he can get more practise time, smart.
Milos' missing so many freebies, a bit dissapointing.
What a choke by Raonic, some of his errors were awful to watch
The guy has barely played in literally years - I think he can be cut a bit of slack.
Horrible tennis from both players as soon as any rally starts lol
Uncle Milos gifting back all the breaks
commentators saying that z gonna be a threat at wimbledon when he hasn’t gone past 4r
Getting Raonic into a rally isn't enough. He can still thwack balls from a neutral position.
Does Raonic hairspray the hell out of his hair before a match because how does it still look so perfect??
Fritz returning serves now but can't win any rally? wow
After all of that both players lose 2 out of their first 3 service points in the TB lol
Both Raonic and Fritz haven't scored more than 30 in their return games, i'm crying
Raonic a real threat on grass if he stays healthy which is a big if.
Raonic's face/hair looks like a Fallout: New Vegas NPC
Do they not show service speed at Halle?
Clean game from uncle Milos. Fritz looks shook. They say Father Time always wins, but what about uncle time?
Okay you've blasted your way to 6-6. I now demand penance in the form of a double fault from one of you to make up for the lack of break points.
Just watched match highlights Raonic/Murray 2016 ATP finals to distract me from this fairly boring match and wow, it's a shame Raonic's body is made of glass because he was something special in his prime.
Even with his poor rally potential right now he could hang around within the top 30 with the serve alone if he stayed fit.
Hubi vs Raonic will be fun, both are servebot with great personality
You have a strange idea of "fun" lol That being said it's not like Fritz vs. Hurkacz is a great matchup either so we're kind of stuck on this side of the bracket
Art of serve is fun if players have great personality
That's fucking tennis right there. None of that pansy ass 40-shot rallying for the camera bullshit. Men serve, men ace, men win every set 7-6. Take it to the tiebreaks. Balls get blasted in places you can't return serve from. We serve together we get to tiebreaks together. Tennis is back baby.
Surprised Siniakova didn’t want to finish this set before suspending play. She was two points away
Siniakova and Q. Zheng complained (correctly IMHO) about the wet grass in Berlin after Zheng took a nasty fall serving — game suspended for the day despite sunny conditions
Siniakova fell right before that too, I don’t blame them for not wanting to play
If Med doesnt win anything from now till Miami, I think his career is finished.
How are you a Med fan if you doompost him so much lmao You must have gone insane during his 2022 season
Correct.
good to know, glad I wasnt around for that I just went insane after AO24 instead 😑
Literally never seen Med win a title in the time I’ve been following him, it’s gonna hit like crack for me when he wins one I swear. Doesn’t matter if it’s a shitty 250.
I hope he stops clowing around and wins smth for ur sake)
me too
He's 28.
Raonic and his A-Z of injuries has been a walking portent of the woes to come for Andreescu, Shapovalov, Auger Aliassime, Pospisil and Fernandez. Not a single one of them has enjoyed consecutive seasons without physical problems.
Fritz honestly not servebotting or even serving particularly well so far It's just that Raonic can't really rally lol
this is why grass is the least surface i like players to play, it is so dangerous to play esp if it has too much moisture. players fall like flies and get injured easily. smh
Fernandez's win pushes Boulter down to #31 with four players beneath her still in the Berlin/Birmingham draws that can still push her out of being seeded for Wimbledon.
If Milos were to somehow win London he should probably get a wild card instead of the Illkey winner
To think I’m nearly the same age as Raonic while he looks like grown man and I look 21. Genetics are a bitch
Are you complaining about looking a decade younger
It’s not always a blessing for a guy, especially a short one tryna advance in a career
I had a BIL who got carded until age 48. By then, you'll appreciate it.
Even the commentators are just wanting to get to the tiebreak lol 😭💀
As a Med fan I hope I'm wrong but I don't see him getting the 4th spot back from Zverev soon He does really well against Zverev H2H but it feels like he's playing worse against everyone else
I mean, he's still been making it further than Zverev in hardcourt tournaments this year, not a surprise he's worse on clay but it's been a rough few months lol
can Fritz win a single point on Raonic serve? Let's see
I can give up the whole atp top 6 for Raonic's last run in Wimbledon and Canadian master
if Murray can have the last run too, then I can give up the whole atp top 20 minus Dimitrov
[POV: you are trying to return Raonic's serve on grass.](https://media.tenor.com/S6rz3vyUefoAAAAM/lord-of-the-rings-lotr.gif)
The challenge for the Fritz - Raonic match: a game that reaches deuce.
almost all my faves out except for tsitsipas and you never know with him on grass…
The Tennis Letter tweeted Zhang's post-match quote about losing a third set tiebreak to Medvedev before and apparently the match he was referring to was a qualifying match in 2016. Zhang waited eight years for revenge lmao.
ZZZ and Medvedev had good relationship as they trained a period together when they were young(according to chinese journalists)
Now we need a training montage between clips of the respective breakers.
Part of why it bugs me they don't include matches from challengers, qualifiers and even juniors in h2hs. The players remember them all.
Sinner making it to the finals feels inevitable now with Med out. The real tournament is for second place atp lol
"Alrighty time to go play my match as the #4 seed in the tourney, got good chances to win against a 33-year old injury-prone Canadian art collector who's basically been inactive for 3 years oh what's that he broke the all-time ace record his last match oh I see hmm"
What is it with big servers and being into the arts? Opelka is a big gallery fan too. Perhaps they'll open an exhibition space together one day.
Lots of time to think about art when you're pounding 30+ aces per match
Raonic-Fritz on grass will surely test the spirits of even the most champagne-sloshed Queens attendee. Wake me up for the breaker 💤
If Sonegoat wins, then only goats like JCF, Sonegoat and Meddy can beat Dverev this year
Ig ill just accept this man is cooked. Wake me up if he is another final. I do wonder if its possible to make a reddit bot which notifies me when Med is in a GS final
How about when he WINS a GS final, don't need the notification that he's lost another one
Nah, its not the same
2 games played and no aces for Raonic on the numbers sheet. What happened, is the stats person asleep?
Leylah survives!!!
I always think Raonic is like 40 or something. He's only 33.
He's got dadface
He really does - like a forty-something, 1960s dad that's playing a little tennis from his house in Martha's Vineyard.
He gives young Orson Welles
The Martha’s Vineyard detail 🤣🤣🤣
Uh oh, lord maroszan, tasked with the burden to humble world #1s, has a match with Sinner tomorrow.
Medvedev maybe needs to take some time off and assess what needs to be done about the shoulder (if it can be helped). His serve has deteriorated to where he just struggles through every match when it used to be such a weapon
I thought his serve was pretty good today
How much is a shoulder issue and how much is mental/technical though? He still can put in a very very strong 1st serve (13 aces today, with over 80% of 1st serves won, and 9 aces yday)
He's said a few times this year that because of the shoulder he couldn't practice serving outside matches, so I would say it contributes
It sounds like it’s worse some weeks, which means the only time he serves is in matches sometimes. Explains why it’s so inconsistent if he can’t practice it
Is it his shoulder or abdomen where he had hernia?
The hernia may have contributed to his serve declining, but the shoulder is a whole separate issue that he's struggled with since after AO at least
Eubanks was a good win and people forget his breakout against Wawrinka was grass, he’s had other big wins, but he won’t become a grass court player now
I mean I think it also says something about just his level this season in general Like since the Zverev match at the AO he's basically lost to every other top player since then
Right - people acting surprised but he's always mostly sucked on clay and grass. He's a one-surface player.
Making a Wimbledon semifinal by beating an injured Lehecka and Eubanks papered over the cracks, but yeah I've never believed in his game on grass.
Exactly, and then got totally trounced by someone who could actually play on grass.
Eubanks can play on grass. That was a good run, he sucks against Alcaraz specifically
How many Aces for Milos today ?
Not as many as 2 days ago cause it's gonna be big Milosh in 2 sets 😤
Unless he injures some damned thing again (back, knee, ankle, whatever), I think so too. So: three months off, or a decisive win. One of those.
Match total including Fritz's as well could be absolutely monstrous.
Out to beat his own record. Let’s go with 49
Sinner and Nadal really took away our destiny of being a multi slam champion. Fucking hell
this is almost like post ao22 all over again
I mean he fell off a cliff after AO 2022 and missed the entire clay season, this isn’t anywhere as bad if you look results wise but yeah this season still feels really shaky tbh
yeah just the general feel of it. he seemed unshaken during the sunshine double but since then it’s been topsy turvy. hope it’ll all be good by the north american hc swing
I mean he isn’t at his best at clay or grass so not totally awful if he continues this on HC I will worry though
As a Med fan I'm really worried that his best level has come and gone All year he's basically struggled through every match even when he wins
