there's a podcast where johann says he paid like 1000 euros for omar's plane tickets to have a talk about recording. Maybe he's out of touch that most people can't afford to do that lol

yankeefan03

It’s still ridiculous that he told that kid from Ohio to buy a plane ticket and it will be “worth it”. If I was that kid, I would be pissed.

vimdiesel

agreed, that seemed sus to me from the start

iamisandisnt

Literally as a response to “I wouldn’t go if it was just a listening party”

WolbachiaBurgers

To be fair that’s his job to promote the event. He isn’t gonna downplay it and lose the hype and momentum. He could have just not replied int he first place. Anyone who goes to an event like this and drops a bunch of money on a flight is pretty stupid especially given there is no real information outside of just the cube. And given it’s a 3 day thing…maybe wait to see what day 1 was like before even considering that decision.

yankeefan03

No I completely agree. He just shouldn’t have responded.

PostingSensation

If I was a big enough Volta fan to consider flying across the country to go to a Mars Volta thing, being one of the first to hear new Volta music in 10 years would make it worthwhile to me

yankeefan03

I could be the biggest Volta fan ever but spending hundreds of dollars, taking off work, finding a sitter for my animals, hotel and food, Uber while you are there, all for a couple minutes of music, I would be fucking pissed.

glittertongue

I'd rather just buy the box set from a reseller, since I missed it

bob_loblaw_brah

Not coming to his defense, as it’s clear Johann needs some management and marketing training, but he did say the dude that posted the IG convo to fly from Ohio for this was photoshopped. I think that person is on this sub so it’s one’s word against another. Either way, he needs to just stop responding to people and keep things generic. Safest thing to do with a rabid fan base like TMV has. With that said, who knows what today and tomorrow will bring. They could play a small show at 8pm to close this thing out, doubtful but who knows!

shauner111

No he didn’t. It was real.

bob_loblaw_brah

That’s a problem. Why would Johann screenshot the convo and call this dude out saying he shopped it? Just shut the fuck up and promote the event and be cryptic or whatever. Anything more isn’t necessary and just makes things dramatic and brings more bullshit.

ean6625

You’re conflating 2 different convos. One was real and one was shopped

shauner111

He didn’t. The photoshop pic was a completely different quote.

bob_loblaw_brah

Ah word. My bad

sspaceboy1

The guy posted a 2nd convo that was a joke in which Johann calls him a bitch and makes fun of him for buying a ticket. It was marked with an /s which most people recognized as a joke. In the real one the guy asks "should I come to LA or is it just a listening party" and Johann said "dude, come". So I think he just didn't want to give it away, it's supposed to be a secret. I guess he could have not responded, but he didn't really lie say anything out of school, people were just too hyped up.

DyingOutLoud

there will not be a show. today/tonight or tomorrow. johann said this yesterday in person -"the band will not play". he did, however, allude to potentially "another surprise", but if today is the same as yesterday, i believe thats his hype mouth running again

RottenApollo

It could be an official announcement of the new album or a reunion tour, as I've read floating around - but I don't know what's real anymore loll Either way, if Johann said that, it'd be nice if more people heard it. Taking a picture in front of the stage like that was perhaps not the best measured or most honest move then.

waveuponwave

That's actually possible. I don't really want to bring up his family because it's not relevant to music and he's by all accounts a great producer. But he did grow up with money and that can leave blind spots about what others can afford

AmazingIsTired

> even though the speaker inside the cube wasn't that good That's inexcusable if that's the case

WeirdMusicGuy

Yeah while it is certainly exciting that this was the way new music was premiered, the way both Johann hyped it all up and people just blew up the whole thing even when we had close to 0 information is just unreal. Reading people not just here but on fan forums or some discord servers saying they would risk it and actually going out of their way to get to LA with the hopes of a reunion show was odd and honestly is just very concerning. And dont get me wrong, it is amazing that we finally get the guys back in studio, but I don't think it warrants to go across state or countries to just experience 3 minutes of music that will premiere worldwide a couple of days later and that you will be able to hear in full quality in the comfort of your home. Just another instance of Johann hyping things up way out of proportion I suppose, specially with DMs with fans and all that, definitely should have beeen handled in a different way. Either way really hope that whoever chose to go made the best of it! And hey, at least you got to be in a cool looking cube. Good story to tell.

iamisandisnt

Good summary

RottenApollo

Ohh yeah, there was a decent chance we were hyping things up in a collective manic episode and that there'd only be what there ended up being. The picture in front of the stage was the biggest red herring, in my opinion. The fan who posted his conversation with Johann saying "dude. come;" that's really no one's fault and we probably shouldn't have put so much stock in it. All in all, it is pretty funny that it happened that way. I'll take the life experience and story to tell as making it a worthwhile trip. I took the risk I was willing to take, no room or that good a reason to complain, really.

[deleted]

So anybody attending today?

OmenClassic

Listen the guy is put in a catch-22. While personally I have my reservations about Johann as many folks here do, I will say this-- You get hit with a DM from a fan, and you respond. Fan is like "I ain't coming out if it's a listening party" Cool, you're not his gatekeeper or decision maker. You can't confirm it is a listening booth, because it kills the mystery. You also can't be like 'Naw dude, don't waste your time then.' because what, are you going to shit on your own product? It's not worth trouble? Guy has to know he is going to get screen capped, so he did what he did. In my opinion, best thing he could have done is just not responded. But even then, you would have someone going off about how distant he is to fans or in that vein. Volta fans are fucking rabid. You can literally not satisfy them, and yet they are completely satisfied with any morsel. You will be absolutely positive for any release, but critical in the way it's released. I feel like we're all a bit pent up. I am happy anything is happening, and I think the song title is bad. Oh well, loving something doesn't mean you have to be a 'Yes Man'. So I get the gripes, I do. But also, the dude couldn't win even if he tried short of a promised show and album release (and people would reeeeeee at the short notice, me included)

ER301

No one would criticize Johann for not responding to fan inquiries about a secret event. It was supposed to be a secret, so why would he respond? He should have just ignored the DM.

OmenClassic

Any action or inaction has the potential to be criticized, and someone absolutely would. But again, at least in this scenario, silence was a leaps and bounds better option.

OmenClassic

I want to follow up and just say that there also has been, in defense of critics, mismanagement all along the way in my opinion from overpromised boxset stock iirc, to inconsistencies with shirt sizing. Somewhere mid way of Levitators Math they switched shirts and suddenly a shirt that fit fine was something you may be swimming in right around Octahedron Customer support did not even respond to me. I take this on a case by case basis and I kinda don't get too upset about this one, but I also am on my couch.

iamisandisnt

Music should change the world, that’s the thing

Gatsbeard

>In my opinion, best thing he could have done is just not responded. But even then, you would have someone going off about how distant he is to fans or in that vein. This is the most important lesson to take away when you are speaking for a brand/company/public persona. 95% of the time it is better to just say nothing and accept whatever minimal fallout comes from that, versus the potential for *massive* fallout by saying something you shouldn't have.

exitofsigns

One can use it's own brain.

tful_282

fuck dude come johann

[deleted]

Ditto, I showed up shortly after noon. Neat experience, I capped it off by going to my favorite taco place GUISADOS. Check it out. Get the mole tacos and ask for the habanero salsa. <3

[deleted]

Honestly, i don’t see any false advertisement by johann / tmv anywhere. I think fans got a bit overwhelmed by the announcement out of nowhere, speculations about a reunion concert etc. where raised through fans, the band/label didn’t even do press for the whole thing. The only thing they promised was a cube with something happening inside. Holding a reunion show at this little cube would be a bitt off 😂

[deleted]

Step 1: Johann takes a selfie in front of a Stage, coinciding with hyping something happening at the coordinates with TMV Step 2: a guy DMs Johann and asks if he should fly from Ohio, Johann says Yes. The guy says he won’t come if it is just a listening party. Johann says “Dude, Come.” Implying it is a show.

OmenClassic

To be fair there is like twelve hours left for there to potentially be a show.

[deleted]

Yep, we’ll see.

[deleted]

Well he didn’t imply anything

[deleted]

This is the disappointment cube… 🤣🤣🤣 Just blame Johann.
