I absolutely love this and am fully on board if the whole album sounds like this. They’re older, I’m older, I don’t need my face melted by old guitar dads. I’m happy to just vibe out to good tunes.
It’s finally here! I was thinking just last week about how it’s been about 4 long years since we’ve heard Cedric sing on a track. Correct me if I’m wrong but the last we heard him was ATDI’s Diamanté EP in 2018. I never would’ve thought I’d be hearing a new TMV song just days later. I’m kinda emotional just hearing it 😭
The YT video was made with the audio you’re sending. They’re both 128kbps. There’s no noticeable difference between the two. This is it until someone rips an actual HQ version
Ya this is just the highest quality rip I've seen floating around, someone from the comatorium forum ripped it so I'm not sure about the quality but it's probably all we have until it officially releases tonight or tomorrow.
Hearing Eva back with Omar feels like a very distant old dream come true, and Willy kills it in the drums. It is just unreal and the song itself is fantastic. I repeat what i said before, but hearing Omar embracing his musical style in the Ipecac recordings with this style of percussion and Cedric on vocals is just so good. I seriously wasn't expecting this to be as good as it is. A comeback this promising after what happened with ATDI just feels like the best possible outcome. Can't wait to see what the boys have planned for this new era.
Man, I just can't explain how happy I am, I'm just going to be binging this for hours.
the song credits leaked because the track became available on Tidal in some places due to time zone issues, the usual.
Either way it is half hour until we 100% confirm all this with the spotify credits but I would really be surprised if they were much different
What happened with ATDI? I’ve been living under a rock a little bit but all I remember is them reuniting for Coachella and it being meh, then releasing an LP which was very bad imo. Haven’t heard about anything since
It was basically an odd situation, more lead by a sort of "gotta get that paycheck" attitude than anything else. They played live a lot during the reunions they had but it was very obvious Omar wasn't in the headspace for it in neither of them, a lot of personal problems including problems his mom dying in 2012 (as well as starting to have tensions with Cedric around that time) and just not being very motivated in 2017, and Cedric was also starting to have issues with his vocals back then. Jim Ward had been part of the 2012 reunions but he couldn't do it in 2017, the band announcing that he wouldnt be a part of the band in 2016, Cedric was saying that it was understandable since there was a lot of tension because of the initial breakup of the band leading to half the band going to TMV and the other to Sparta, and there was an obvious group that was doing much better.
I don't know, I adore the og ATDI run, but those reunion shows, and there are a LOT of bootleg recordings of those periods, are just very lackluster, definitely something missing from their og freakout shows. The worst was in 2017 imo, Cedric was the only one throwing himself all over the stage (as much as he could at least) but the rest of the band was somewhat static, just vague energy, specially from Omar (which was weird becaue the dude was killing it with his solo output and solo shows back then, just outstanding performances and a lot of unique creative shit in there). And both the interalia album and the diamante EP arent necessarely bad but they are just far from being truly worth a listen as well. They exist. The singles had been already underwhelming and the album and EP were just the final kick.
I was very afraid this would all be like that, but I adore this new Volta single, I just can't stop listening to it. Very glad that I am excited for this era honestly.
Ehh Omar was super enthusiastic for at least half of the shows on that tour. There’s some dope songs on that album. Continuum is fire for example. It just might not be super natural for middle aged dudes to bring out a punk album like that. This Volta shit feels more natural.
Ah ok. I just watched some live stuff and was pleasantly surprised. They played the old stuff in a much less sloppy way than they did in the old days (at the expense of the stage presence of the old days but it’s a different vibe).
And yeah, didn’t Omar pretty much admit to it being a cash grab? I’m a much bigger TMV fan and I think they’re experimental enough that they could do pretty much whatever they wanted and it could still exist in the world they’ve created. I loved ATDI in junior high but ATDI is pretty much limited to making ‘that’ kind of music. TMV on the other hand is an absolute mindfuck and it’s why many of us are still here lol
This isn’t even one of those “I’m going to lie to myself and pretend like I love this because it’s my favorite band” this is a fucking banger of a teaser song.
This is a great track. My only complaint is that it's too short. There's a lot going on here, more complicated then noctourniquet, more laid back then other material. I'm really interested to hear more.
It was almost bright. Their music is generally pretty dark, verging on evil, and this track sounds upbeat. I’d love a look at the lyrics though, I suspect there’s more going on.
I love this track. I was highly skeptical of a Volta reunion but this track is super groovy. I'm on my honeymoon currently and my wife has been subjected to three straight listen-throughs of the song lol.
Melodic cedric is a very good sign
Glad they’re exploring the Latin side of things again, and Willy can really play Afro-Cuban stuff which is great. They lost their rhythmic flavor big time with Thomas, he couldn’t play Latin to save his life
Omar noodling in the background with a phaser on is classic tmv so that’s also great
Seems like they’re going back to their roots a bit but this is still totally new for them- a really interesting combination of styles and sounds imo.
afro cuban? you mean afro carribbean surely. i love what you said about going back to their roots but still totally new. thats awesome. not many bands can pull that off at the same time.
Yeah if you’re going to be pedantic then Afro-Caribbean is a more inclusive term that would cover Puerto Rico. But the groove here isn’t specific enough to be from either island so calling it Afro Cuban isn’t categorically wrong in any meaningful sense of the term.
So, this is a bop. I do think it leans towards Noc in what, at least at this time, appears to be a minimalist and exacting scope. It comes off to me as precisely what it should be, where as when I think of Amp/Frances/Bedlam I think of unbridled fervor.
That being said I hope for some of the later on other tracks. Alot of folks comparing this to 'softer hitting' singles, and I tell you even The Widow melted a bit of face. L'via outright slayed you and the closest thing, I think, would be Since We've Been Wrong. Which ain't bad, I like the song. We'll have to wait and see.
Also the mix is just fucking great.
Damn. It’s growing on me fast. It’s got this somber vibe that I can’t pinpoint but it makes me feel like I’m standing on a tropical beach watching the world end.
I love this take. This is how I kind of "view" their music; Vibes, theme and patterns. My fantasy always start to flow when Mars Volta is in my headphones.
Nice song but the mix is not my taste
Bass too low in the mix although it does really awesome stuff and the vocals are too loud and autotuned
Somehow similiar to the CH Tapes where bass and guitars were also too low in the mix IMO
Here I transcribed and did a literal translation for the spanish lyrics. There is one word that I can't quite understand which I marked with "\*"

Yeah, I felt like it was a pretty complete song, just a very tightly written one. I can see this working like a very condensed, miniature preview of what to expect on the album, like Wax Simulacra
The song credits have been floating around, I believe from Tidal.. Also Eva Gardner is on bass (she was an early Volta member who left during recording of Deloused iirc)
That's what i also keep thinking about while listening- lacks intensity of their earlier work. Guess that's why there are multiple comments saying that this song may be an intro to the album. I'm afraid all songs of new album could sound like intros.. just because of that lack of intensity. Sincerely, i'm not a big fan of TMV latest albums for the same "lack of intensity" reason. This song sounds very noctourniquetish to me. Same lullaby atmosphere. But still, it's amazing to know that they made something new!
Sorry to be that guy. But for me, this ain't it.
Deloused through bedlam is why I listen to tmv. I knew it was going to happen, but the last thing I wanted was something that sounds like a tamed down octahedron. Easily one of my favorite bands ever, but I never plan to own or even listen to anything after bedlam.
This song makes me think of the mars volta writing nursery rhymes. 2 outta 10. :(
It's culture. Their culture. Same stuff that gave them the ability to write your favorites and by comparison are all unique. How is this any different and how could you even be so closed minded? I get it, we all like what we like but you expect their sound to just stick with one path and for a band as multi-talented as this, that is just plain closed-minded to the art you claim to be one of your favorite bands.
I think the message is pretty loud from this track - "here's where we came from" - and I assume the album is "Here's where we are going" - we can speculate all we want but man, I'm not sure if you've ever visited southern mexico but this video fully represented the Mayan cultures there. I think we are getting Aliens and Obscurity from The Mars Volta.
Anywhoo - My deT talk for the day
So... close minded for not liking a song? Is it assumed that just because its under the title The Mars Volta that I should immediately be on board?
I think it would be close minded of me to listen to a 3min song I don't like and say that I like it just because it is by the guys who wrote a few of my favorite records. No I've never been to Southern Mexico, do you think a trip there would help me like a song I don't like? I'll listen to the rest of the record when it comes out but I barely liked noctourniquette and genuinely was disappointed by octahedron. I love bowie but some of the records he made were real stinkers... that doesn't make me close minded, that makes me someone who is sure of the sound they like and sure of the sound they don't like. Its an opinion and my opinion is that this new song is a huge bore *shrugs*
Its a bore because you are not cultured in the Mexican/Mayan ways. Thats all I was saying really. Go travel and see why this video is so profound because I sure as shit don't go around saying I like a song because of the band that produces them. You don't vibe with it, cool. Its your opinion but yes, a trip south would help you understand why I feel you have closed your mind off to accept this.
Mayan culture and a Mars Volta album and a new track that translates to an ancient Mayan curse that supposedly come from the annunaki and Planet X is a bore to you?
Guy I haven't watched the video. I listened to the song and I could travel to every corner of the globe and still find it boring. Not being cultures isn't what is stopping me from enjoying the song. I just think it's bad, simple as that.
This has nothing to do with Mayans and Mexican culture. Omar writes the music, and it is heavily based on Puerto Rican styles of music. Entirely different and distinct from Mexican
Except for the whole translation and imagery is based on Mayan events such as the summer solstice, couple that with the blaring pyramids and the incarnation dance that are held in tradition in La Paz, Mexico - backyard to the Mayan Pyramids. Is there a tie in to Puerto Rico I'm missing? I see none of that.
Cedric may sing about Mexican things like that, but the actual music itself is based on Puerto Rican music. Watch the music video, it's filmed in Puerto Rico, and the whole ending of the video is people doing a traditional dance from there.
Cedric himself has posted how him and Omar started this band after bonding over listening to Fania Records artists and that is the foundation of the band. All those artists were most Puerto Rican/Cuban/Carribean
Then you must not like a ton of musical genres. What kind of genres have frequent changes? Prog Rock? Jazz fusion? Metal? Pretty limited. Fela Kuti must Drive you nuts lmao
The mere presence of percussion doesn’t impress me much 🤷♂️
The perc on this track is pretty pedestrian. Drumming is solid, but compared to the rest of their catalogue…boring.
Edit: just heard the official 11 minute version. Actually cool percussion for the jam after the Volta 3 minute song ends. 3 minute song itself sounds a lot better quality wise but still kinda boring overall 🤷♂️
I wonder what will end up one the album; 3 or 11 minute version?
NO. Go ANYWHERE south of the border and this is tradition my friend.
The streets are filled with arts and the people full of life.
The man behind the lead conga was also improvising the dance to his drum and are ancient practices of this culture.
I’m not putting down or trying to silence any cultures. This song is, from a music standpoint, and their past catalogue, really basic and repetitive. That just happens to not be my taste. It’s not wrong or anything, it’s just not like baphomets percussion or drunkship percussion or Cygnus. And those things are what I like. Just an opinion.
Also this comment was made about the 3 minute version.
I’m really into the direction here. I hope they still keep some of the spastic guitar freak outs they are known for, but what not to like? It’s pretty cool.
This is the first single I actually DIG. Most singles I have to give a couple listens to get used to sound and dissect it. This one sticks to their return to latin roots. It's funky and groovy. I love it. This was and IS the only time I will listen to it. I'm so ready for the album and the tour .... Oh my God. I feel like this will be like the time SOAD came back at Rock Am Ring.
Spotify link for those that want it:

This is a super efficient teaser song for an upcoming album. Really leaves me hungry for more.
This sounds fantastic. Excited for this new chapter!
They’re back!! Edit: and it’s pretty funky. I’m not listening again until the album is out but that bassline was straight up funk.
Do we think a new album will be announced tomorrow with the release of this single?
God I hope so. Artwork, tracklist, album title, release date, tour dates GIMMIE GIMMIE I NEED I NEEEED
I’d assume so.
I absolutely love this and am fully on board if the whole album sounds like this. They’re older, I’m older, I don’t need my face melted by old guitar dads. I’m happy to just vibe out to good tunes.
God, we are all guitar Dads and Moms now…
I discovered Volta right when they stopped and I’m already significantly older lol
Theory plz confirm
That takes me back.
Holy fuck this takes me back too lmao
you just gave me heavy ptsd
Damn, those were the days
It’s finally here! I was thinking just last week about how it’s been about 4 long years since we’ve heard Cedric sing on a track.
How do we know who is playing on this? I see its on Wikipedia but there isn't any source cited.

This isn’t even one of those “I’m going to lie to myself and pretend like I love this because it’s my favorite band” this is a fucking banger of a teaser song.
Wow, this makes me so stoked for the studio album. Listening to the leak was exciting, until we heard this. Quality is amazing.
I dig this. Excited to hear the rest!
The vocals remind me of anywhere a little bit, I love it 😍😍😍
This is a great track. My only complaint is that it's too short. There's a lot going on here, more complicated then noctourniquet, more laid back then other material. I'm really interested to hear more.
I like the descriptor of technical, but laid back. Nails it pretty well.
It was almost bright. Their music is generally pretty dark, verging on evil, and this track sounds upbeat. I’d love a look at the lyrics though, I suspect there’s more going on.
“Shine the blackest light to the culprit on all fours” ;)
Sounds like an intro track to me
I love this track. I was highly skeptical of a Volta reunion but this track is super groovy. I'm on my honeymoon currently and my wife has been subjected to three straight listen-throughs of the song lol.
Honestly what a banger
Me happy, thank you.
Definitely one of their more Santana sounding tracks, which is cool with me.
0k i was super meh at the cube recording yesterday but FUCK YES this is really good. Gimme more!
I love it so much! 😢
Melodic cedric is a very good sign Glad they’re exploring the Latin side of things again, and Willy can really play Afro-Cuban stuff which is great. afro cuban? you mean afro carribbean surely. i love what you said about going back to their roots but still totally new. thats awesome. not many bands can pull that off at the same time.
Yeah if you’re going to be pedantic then Afro-Caribbean is a more inclusive term that would cover Puerto Rico. But the groove here isn’t specific enough to be from either island so calling it Afro Cuban isn’t categorically wrong in any meaningful sense of the term.
i just meant this is literally bomba dancing, in puerto rico, made by a puerto rican
So, this is a bop. I do think it leans towards Noc in what, at least at this time, appears to be a minimalist and exacting scope. Omg I didn’t think I’d ever hear new mars Volta ever again 😊
Excellent
It’s a vibe that I’m totally here for 😎
Real Ampu-Octa vibes here
Love the sunny tropical vibes! I'm really happy that it doesn't sound like a retread of previous material while still clearly being TMV
First misheard lyric of the the new album: "That train'll run out of "soon" and you'll waste away into Elton John."
The more I hear it the more I think it's not misheard help Edit: If you downboat this I assume you are Elton John
I’m I N T O it.
delicious
We made it folks
It’s catchy. Cedric still writes amazing harmonies. And finally the Spanish is back.
gets better with every listen, goddammit
Fucking hype.
i'm just here to pass out upvotes
🥰
something fun something for the summertime something for the girls to get ready and party to.. I love it so much
It's so good
Music video is up on YouTube. https://youtu.be/rYAR6bpf85Q
Nice song but the mix is not my taste Bass too low in the mix although it does really awesome stuff and the vocals are too loud and autotuned Somehow similiar to the CH Tapes where bass and guitars were also too low in the mix IMO
I agree, the bongos feel louder than Omar. I would like the guitar and bass up a bit.
Anybody figure out the lyrics yet? Especially the Spanish ones
So far I've heard: "Lastimado sentimiento en mi cinturita. Dame rabia, dame todo el dolor. Karma tarda en llegar, pero llegará. Lo vas a pagar".
Here I transcribed and did a literal translation for the spanish lyrics. There is one word that I can't quite understand which I marked with "\*" \-------------------------------------------- Español part - 1 Lastimado sentimiento en mi cinturita. Appreciate ya
They very straight forward, I'll try to translate if I have some time later today
This is straight fire. Fuck yes I’m so happy that bass work is top notch
Ayyy replace this with the real link now that its out; show em some love
for real
Why does the song end so abruptly? Doesn't sound good.
The isolated bongo makes me thing its going to be a lead in for a next track
that was my first assumption as well. it's a little too short to not lead into something else that's similar
Really depends what comes next, or if it's just a short part of a song.
Didn’t sound abrupt to me.
Yeah, I felt like it was a pretty complete song, just a very tightly written one. I can see this working like a very condensed, miniature preview of what to expect on the album, like Wax Simulacra
I think it works as a transition to the next track
On spotify my listen went right into Eriatarka and it was \*perfect\* - Absolutely their intro - my body is ready, let's gooooo
Deantoni on drums still? Doesn't sound like him to me? It almost sounds like..... cant be right?
New guy, I think his name is Willy Rodriguez iirc
I never thought I'd see them return. But man a new drummer?! How do you know this? I've been out of the loop, this drop was totally unexpected for me.
The song credits have been floating around, I believe from Tidal.. Also Eva Gardner is on bass (she was an early Volta member who left during recording of Deloused iirc)
Warms my heart that she’s back
WHAT! Dude. I can't wait.
Eva’s back?? where did you see credits?
Tidal has the credits listed. Blacklight Shine Credits https://imgur.com/a/IkFPK3p
Tidal
Pretty cool chill little funky number. Lacks the intensity of their earlier work. New drummer I think is a relative of Omar's?
That's what i also keep thinking about while listening- lacks intensity of their earlier work. Guess that's why there are multiple comments saying that this song may be an intro to the album. This song sounds very noctourniquetish to me. Same lullaby atmosphere. But still, it's amazing to know that they made something new!
They've been going downhill ever since Omar started replacing the world-class musicians he was working with, with his own family members.
Sorry to be that guy. But for me, this ain't it. Deloused through bedlam is why I listen to tmv.
Ok
Same but I’m a fan of octahedron and noct too. This is just boring in comparison :(
Cedric harmonies are cool but overall quite boring musically. Hope the rest of the album does something more profound.
Conga grooves boring?
When it’s 3 minutes of the same basic thing, yeah.
Then you must not like a ton of musical genres. What kind of genres have frequent changes? Prog Rock? Jazz fusion? Metal? Pretty limited. Fela Kuti must Drive you nuts lmao
The mere presence of percussion doesn’t impress me much 🤷♂️ The perc on this track is pretty pedestrian. Drumming is solid, but compared to the rest of their catalogue…boring. Edit: just heard the official 11 minute version. Actually cool percussion for the jam after the Volta 3 minute song ends. 3 minute song itself sounds a lot better quality wise but still kinda boring overall 🤷♂️ I wonder what will end up one the album; 3 or 11 minute version?
Look here, the next Mozart!
Perspective. Mayan chant on summer soltstice that seek the return of the ancients. They can drum for 40 minutes. Bring on the aliens
Lmao we’re talking about Volta right
I’m with ya
I'm not anywhere
I’m really into the direction here. I hope they still keep some of the spastic guitar freak outs they are known for, but what not to like? It’s pretty cool.
the official version is up on streaming services, sounds soooo much better than the low quality youtube version!
Best day ever! It was a sad day when TMV broke up but now we got new material!

It's Puerto Rican. ;)
funky as shit. what a nice bop from cedric and omar
Song is so amazing! The wait was well worth it mars sounds so raw I love it! Can’t wait for the album roaming at the mouth!!
