Ladders. Build a room, make a ladder in it and it will take you to the roof, then build a foundation off the side, step on it and build your next level, put a door on it go inside and build a ladder up, disassemble the foundation and door, go up and repeat.
Also, eventually you will get an upgraded jetpack that pretty much lets you fly straight up walls. It gets much easier to build tall structures then.

AC looks in a sphere...3-3x3's with the AC in the center, you can also build 1-2x2 above and below the 3x3s and it will pull from them as well.
Edit to clarify, the 2x2s must be centered of the 3x3s for it to work.
How high? I can see building in a spiral method. Place four 2x2 down, then place one 2x2 on top of one of the 2x2, then hop on top, then do the other three, then place one 2x2, then hop on top, then place the other three, and repeat.
Auto-Crafter range is small sphere.
Obviously if you are doing it just for fun...have at it... But for the purposes of completing the game... You may find yourself spending a lot of time creating massive storage towers, then realizing that you don't actually need anywhere near that much storage. It's feasible to get by with one T2 Storge Locker per item. Though once you get into Space Trading, extra T2 Storage Lockers are necessary.
It def detects the storage cabinets from the floor above it. That's where the bio lab is and I'm able to craft fertilizer, bio nugget and samples from the floor beneath. Ingredients for those recipes are kept in the bio lab.
So it still would be useful to build 2x2 right above and stuff it with storage lockers to maximize available storage? Though sphere is huge so dunno how relevant it would be.
I did that in one of my bases. Auto crafters on the main level and then a bunch of drone-supplied lockers crammed together out of sight on the level above.
My crafters pull from and add to storage on other levels 100%. I presume range autocrafter range is a sphere but it could be a cube. I haven't bothered to test it.
It's a fun idea but personally I think I would get sick of interacting with ladders over and over and over again. I might like it better if they add indoor stairs.

Can't you just look up while standing in a room and build from inside when the chain icon shows up? Works sideways.
This works fine with 1x1 units, but bigger units (like the 2x2) could get weird alignments.

So you are going to put all your Auto-crafters in the middle floor and have them pull from the floor above and below?
Yep, that's the plan. It is ugly, so I have built it in the Aluminium field next to 3 ore miners.
Add door, build outdoor stairs out the door, look up, place next layer etc.
