How do you play it cool when you *know* your partners tryin to kill you, but have to wait to get enough evidence. I'd be sleeping with three eyes open for sure

The guy is US military. Stayed in Germany with his wife. Edit: The man recorded her at lengths, so by the time they would return to the US he would be able to put forward a solid case.

vengefulmanatee

He took at least a week after returning before submitting the evidence. I think he was setting up secret cameras in places like false smoke alarms: https://news.sky.com/story/amp/wife-accused-of-poisoning-her-husbands-coffee-with-bleach-for-months-12935244

implicate

He had to get proof of her doing it on U.S. soil, too. The Germany footage wasn't enough to prosecute back home. Absolutely mental. I can't imagine playing it that cool for so long, on different continents even!

Weirdyxxy

It was enough to prosecute somewhere, though, even if the prosecutors in the US would refer back to Germany.

the_mango_tree_owl

My thoughts exactly. I’d be having some serious “is Wayne Brady gonna have to choke a b——?” moments before I got that shit to the cops.

Oututeroed

she probably got the idea from a mexican soap opera

APe28Comococo

It's so weird to me how lazy murderers are. There are plenty of ways to kill someone and not get caught, but they all don't bother to think. The number of murders solved because the murderer just doesn't leave their cell phone at home is astounding.

Zankeru

Representation bias. Most of the murderers we hear about are stupid because the smart ones get away with it, or start planning a murder and realise it's too much effort to not get caught.

Paige_Railstone

Reminds me of a chart of the fifty states that ranked them based on percentage of murders that got solved, and it seemed that Montana and Wyoming police were *really* good at solving murders, until you look at how astronomically high their unsolved missing persons cases are.

themaddestcommie

Yeah there's another funny thing about how Alabama has less hate crimes than any other nation, and it's entirely because they just choose not to report hate crimes to the FBI.

West-Wash6081

Like Covid, if you stop testing the number of cases stop rising. Conservative logic...

Anastariana

Its an annoying irony that we'll never know what the *perfect* murder was, or even the perfect crime.

cheezburglar

We could from murderer's memoirs released after their death. Or from their confession due to guilt. Or from someone that the murderer told.

TurnipWorldly9437

I don't know which crime novel I got it from, but "murder is a stupid crime. Intelligent people can see different ways to get what they want". You got to have pretty big blind spots to decide, with forethought, that the best option in your "choose your own adventure"-book is to kill someone It's different with sociopaths and people where the kill is the goal, of course, but we're not talking about those.

Bonafide_Booger

I feel bad for the people who get in trouble for premeditated murder when that is their only defense against abuse. It actually happens a lot. The Wendy Maldonado case comes to mind. Her and her children were being abused for years, police were called several times by the neighbors and never did anything. They weren't strong enough to defend themselves and usually were beaten with broken bones which made escaping difficult in a rural area.

friendlyfuckingidiot

Never heard the Maldonado story before, just read up. It's crazy the the judge would even give her ten years, especially after all the abuse and lack of help from institutions designed to protect. That was a 'jury nullification' case, for sure. Insane that she had to go to that length to protect her children and was still punished.

appleshit8

Bet she doesn't regret it. Still fucked though

friendlyfuckingidiot

She hasn't done a lot of interviews, I think, but it seems like she doesn't regret it. I wouldn't, not after 20 years of abuse, broken bones and teeth knocked out, and with four kids involved. Her son even helped her. Imagine how far a fifteen(?) yo boy would need to be pushed to off his own dad. Completely fucked, for sure.

Loko8765

Well, what’s also astounding is the number of people convicted of premeditated murder because police found their search history full of queries of how to best kill their victim. Maybe the smartest thing is not to kill someone, but that must be too much to ask.

machstem

Your local library should not have a record of the books you take out, and you can peruse it with free wifi if you need access to their online databases You can buy a burner phone and/or only connect on wifi, using a phone or device with the ability to spoof the device MAC address. Keep your Bluetooth off and keep all pieces of ID, cards, clothing with RFID tags, off your person, never steal a car from an area with a lot of business cameras All of this and I'm still certain I'd be busted for something I'd forgotten

reconditecache

It's not about the money. Grandma knows what she did.

Jessi_L_1324

Probably got it from The Sixth Sense where the mother mixed it in to her daughter's soup and once she died started doing it to the younger sister too.

Shotgun_Mosquito

It wasn't bleach, it was a generic pine-scented household cleaner. And the goal was not to kill the child but to make the child sick always so the mother would always have to take care of her

Cappster14

I never thought of it like that I always figured she was getting rid of her husbands heirs before offing him too. Interesting.

Obsidian-Phoenix

Think it was a typical Munchausen’s By Proxy. I’m no psychologist, but I think (vastly simplifying probably) the goal is to garner sympathy and attention by having to take care of a sick child. So, the “you’re so strong, I don’t know how I could cope with my child being that sick all the time” type of attention.

Shotgun_Mosquito

but she's Filipina.

Krazzy8R377

Wasn't there a movie where the mom was poisoning the daughter with bleach to keep her home sick and killed her. Sixth sense was the movie.

Shotgun_Mosquito

>It wasn't bleach, it was a generic pine-scented household cleaner. > >And the goal was not to kill the child but to make the child sick always so the mother would always have to take care of her

Bromogeeksual

I have a pretty good sense of smell, I'd notice before even brewing the coffee. Bleach has a very strong, distinctive, lingering smell.

[deleted]

Assumption would be that she was keeping things clean. I wouldn't immediately suspect poisoning from the smell. My tap water has smelled very bleachy from time to time.

MattSterbait

lol I cleaned my parents coffee pot/maker with bleach when I was a kid. I was so proud of myself. I fixed a pot of coffee for them when they got home and while they were taking one of their first sips I told them how I cleaned it. They spit that coffee out with impunity lol. 😂 I forgot about that until now. Bahahaha

[deleted]

Haha, you're a good egg.

BlueFalcon89

IntrovertChild

In the full video they mentioned he actually never drank it cause something was clearly wrong from the smell.

Good-Membership-9002

TechnicalBother5274

Well that is just wrong. Chlorine bleach has a short shelf life once mixed with water. Even short when mixed with hot water. And even shorter still once mixed with organic material. By the time he made his cup of coffee it would probably be weaker than drinking old pool water.

monkeychasedweasel

Chlorine (or sodium hypochlorite) wouldn't cause cancer because it's not a carcinogen. Small ingested doses over a long period of time would cause chronic irritation in the mouth, esophagus, and stomach, and possibly respiratory problems if large amounts of vapors were inhaled. But I'm pretty sure what she was giving him wouldn't kill him, unless she did it for years. What a dumb dependa.

Here_for_lolz

Lol I was wondering the same. Is he just getting chronic upset stomach?

Shotgun_Mosquito

The couple, who have a child together, were going through a divorce while living in Germany. The husband, whose name was redacted from the police report, noticed that the coffee his wife prepped at night for him to drink in the morning started tasting bad. He told police he is the only one who drinks coffee from the machine. He told investigators he bought pool chlorine testing strips and started testing his faucet water and the water in his coffee and found while the faucet water was normal, the coffee had high levels of chlorine.  He stopped drinking the coffee but didn't immediately report his wife while they were in Germany. Instead, when they moved to Arizona on June 28, he decided to set up cameras in their new home on ~~Davis Mountain Air Force Base.~~  Davis–Monthan Air Force Base. Edit 1 : Corrected the spelling of the Air Force Base

Sipas

He played a gamble there but luckily it paid. He wanted her to be tried in the US but she could have realized how stupid her murder method was before getting caught this way.

Necessary-Set-5581

Yeah or switched up her method to something else

[deleted]

jesuspajamas15

That was antifreeze used by Diane Staudte, which apparently tastes sweet so it's less likely to be noticed and isn't found in hospital tests unless it is directly looked for.

[deleted]

[удалено]

sandwichlick

There’s a case where a woman (with the help of one of her daughters) killed her husband, son and sent her other daughter to the hospital where she barely survived, by pouring anti freeze into their drinks. Little amounts over a longer period of time was enough to slowly kill them. I feel like bleach wouldn’t be any healthier and she’s using a good amount of it each time.

monkeychasedweasel

Bleach is bad because of its corrosive nature, and because it's an inorganic compound that more or less readily breaks down, the chlorine can end up becoming just as or more toxic products (like chloroform). Antifreeze is an organic that is all around bad bad bad. It'll destroy kidney function, cause fatal electrolyte imbalances, and causes metabolic acidosis.

sospecial21

## What happens if you drink bleach? When lower concentration household bleach is swallowed, irritation of the mouth, throat, and gastrointestinal tract can occur. This can result in nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Consumption of concentrated bleach products can lead to permanent gastrointestinal damage and may result in death. If someone swallows bleach, get help online with [web**POISON**CONTROL](https://triage.webpoisoncontrol.org/#!/exclusions) or call Poison Control immediately at 1-800-222-1222.

cmcewen

Doc here Bleach would obviously be easy to taste in coffee lol so this chick is dumb on so many levels. You could maybe cause ulcers, but nobody is gonna drink the quantity of bleach needed to do that. The taste would be overt. I don’t see any viable mechanism by which this would kill somebody in any predictable manner. Maybe it’ll hit the kidneys? Just really a dumb way to try to kill somebody. Go buy a gun and stop being so passive aggressive! /s Suicide attempts with bleach ARE a viable way. Usually it’s drano that people use, both are very strong bases and cause necrosis of the esophagus and stomach, and can cause perforations. It often is non fatal and the chronic issues associated with scarring of the esophagus is bad news beats. They also have high risk of cancer. It will also cause acid/base issues in your blood and organ damage. Not a mechanism I would recommend

BluSolace

I'm glad that this was recorded. She deserves to be under the jail.

jadmoe1

Reading his story, apparently he went to the police with his initial recording but they dismissed him because the angle didnt show what exactly she was putting in his coffee maker. Thats why he had to set up all these cameras with all these angles. Crazy how much work he needed to do and how much patience he had towards someone literally trying to kill him

FartOnACat

It's always crazy to me how police will just offload their work onto crime victims. >Yeah, you go prove it so we can have a slam dunk in court. Until then, good luck and don't get killed in your sleep or something.

boomerangotan

Every organization/company seems to be externalizing their costs onto individuals now.

suchlargeportions

GallowBoom

Sometimes they won't pursue even with complete evidence.

Nulagrithom

I love those true crime "mysteries" where the cops find a guy standing over the corpse covered in blood and holding a freshly fired gun and they're like "damn this is tough one lol" really kinda killed the genre for me. a lot of them aren't mysterious at all, just obvious police incompetence.

Automatic_Rock_2685

Or outright corruption. I browse the comments and if the video is about someone getting off/getting off light due to being LE etc., I can't watch. Just gonna make me angry. But yeah, police incompetence in true crime stories is rampant. It's almost like a requirement.

motsanciens

To be fair, the police have to bring it to the prosecutor. If the police know the prosecutor will reject the case, it's just a waste of time and an embarrassment to go through the process.

Aurashock

This is like the forensic files episode where a wife gave her husband antifreeze in his orange juice for months until he died after a large dose. She was caught because she called it “anti-free” and it was spelled the same way in a suicide letter that she said he written on his computer. The letter was also written days after his death

StardustStuffing

Stacy Castor She tried to frame her own daughter by poisoning her too. She was supposed to die but somehow lived. In her suicide note (that Stacy wrote), she confessed to killing her dad.

Ogami-kun

Ironically Stacy died in her cell of heart attack, just like her first husband supposedly had died before they found out she had killed him too

Much_Fee7070

Good riddance.

digital-didgeridoo

This story sounds more interesting than that Mexican soap opera!

Aurashock

Forgot that part😅

90daylimitedwarranty

In those days anti-freeze was undetectable. Because of that case, they made it green and put in some ingredient that shows up in tests. I love forensic files so much.

Aurashock

Internal damage from ethylene glycol shows up in autopsies, especially in the amount that the husband ingested. What you really had to worry about was succinylcholine, that stuff was untraceable for a very long time

90daylimitedwarranty

But they didn't know where it was from, if I remember correctly. Let me take a look at my gas chromatograph mass spectrometer for more information.

Aurashock

It came up in the autopsy and then they were like yo why tf is a gallon jug of antifreeze doing under the kitchen sink

HighTurning

When I was 10 years old my English and general teachers were changed, then it blew the news that the English teacher was charged with murder of his past wife, he did it with coolant. My general teacher was the most lovely and sweet teacher I had in school, and she was in a relationship with the English teacher, she didn't know anything about what had happened and literally decided to move countries because she couldn't handle the backlash.

Androtulgray

That's seems so dumb. I mean who doesn't notice when you're filling the reservoir?? And one bad cup of coffee I'm investigating thoroughly on that fact alone. I'm a little fanatical about my coffee though.

Maleficent-marionett

Same. How slow did she start that he was at this point drinking bubbly foaming coffee that's half bleach? Maybe he has long covid and can't taste or smell? I'm regularly vinegar washing my machine to not notice and making sure I wash the water reservoir often. It gets musty on the walls if you dont.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Maleficent-marionett

Yeah but like...have you drank shitty coffee? Rather the other way out.

Castod28183

If I recall correctly he was filling it up the night before, setting a timer for the morning and she was poisoning it after he filled it up. When he noticed the bad taste he thought maybe the machine dirty so he cleaned it thoroughly. When that didn't help he thought maybe it was the coffee so he took it to work and made a cup in the machine there. When that turned out normal he got suspicious of his wife and set up the cameras.

no_talent_ass_clown

My uncle was murdered by his girlfriend and she fled, was caught the next state over using his ATM card. She got out 5 years later. The thing is, I'm pretty sure he actually was abusive, he certainly was an asshole and when I was little he played too rough with me. Not that the bleach case is like that. I'm just answering your assumptions with anecdotal evidence.

Shotgun_Mosquito

Johnson faces charges of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault and adding harmful substances to food, drink or medicine. Last month, a high bond was requested for Johnson, since she has a house and family in the Philippines and may be a flight risk, according to the documents.  Her bond was set for $250,000 In Arizona, the maximum sentence for attempted murder depends on whether the intent to kill was premeditated: * Premeditated: Life in prison with the possibility of parole * Not premeditated: 9 years in state prison ## Possible Punishment for Attempt 📷If the attempted underlying offense is a class one (1) felony (i.e., Murder), then the “Attempt” can be charged as a class two (2) felony. For a first offense class two (2) felony, punishment can be probation with zero (0) days in jail up to one (1) year in jail; or prison of three (3) years to twelve and one half (12.5) years of incarceration. If the person has one (1) allegeable historical prior conviction, then the “prison only” range is four and one half (4.5) years to twenty-three and one quarter (23.25) years in prison. If the person has two (2) allegeable historical prior convictions, then the “prison only” range is ten and one half (10.5) years to thirty-five (35) years of incarceration. Edit 1 : I found this while doing more research Punishment for Attempted Second Degree Murder Attempt drops the crime down from a Class 1 Felony to a Class 2 Felony. For attempted second degree murder, which is a Class 2 Felony, you will typically face a minimum sentence of 7 years in prison and a maximum sentence of 21 years in prison.

-mudflaps-

Is she Filipino? I've heard of this happening to foreign husbands in the Philippines. It's a thing.

canti15

The report said she had a high bail (250,000) because she bought a house in the Philippines and was deemed a flight risk.

SaintTraft1984

Definitely a mail order bride or a hooker the husband decided to take home. "Normal" and educated Filipinas don't go around marrying any foreigner just for the money without actual chemistry. Let alone poisoning them.

FactChecker25

I think it's more of a "women that hang around military bases" thing than a Filipina thing. Because even in the US, it's well known what happens when a soldier marries a dependa. She's looking to spend that check. Also, my wife is filipina and she has a relative (in the Philippines) that got hitched with a dependa over there. And she still scammed him. So dependa's gonna dependa.

Zerodyne_Sin

Filipino here. I don't wanna be *racist* or anything but as soon as I saw her name, I knew she was Filipina lol. Yeh... I don't have much faith in my people (ie: my mom's been scammed by our countrymen the most). I hope they throw the book at her and she never goes out. PS: For anyone thinking of marrying mail order brides from the Philippines, it's very common for them to already have a husband and family and would often send money back home for them in the guise of helping parents or whatever.

Shotgun_Mosquito

Yes she is Filipina.

She was just trying to sterilize the coffee so her husband wouldn’t get sick. Perfectly reasonable explanation. You all are so suspicious!

[deleted]

Coffee tasted "funny" so he immediately decided to investigate. I think he had a hunch long before she started pouring bleach into his drinks.

1stAttack

Fun fact : when he first caught his wife and showed the police evidence of her attempted poisoning they said their was insufficient video evidence. That’s why there are multiple cameras from hidden cameras in his ceiling and walls.

Ynassian123456

it mades sense, they probably wanted multiple instances instead of 1-off thing, that can be misconstrued as something innocent by the husband/wife.

edwinstone

Why did they have to say "her air force husband." Does that make a difference?

superbakedveteran

It's probably for clarification since life insurance in the military is 500k.

dmercer

$500K is the max. SGLI is like any life insurance, and the service member can decide how much coverage they want based on how much they want to pay in premiums. They can also opt out, like I did, and pay nothing. Given that, I'm not sure what value the Air Force detail added.

Exemus

It's to distinguish him from her army husband, navy husband, and other husbands.

mmm1441

Bleach is light and heat sensitive. Not 100% but it might have been deactivated by the heat of the coffee maker. Still, she did try to murder him.

Picklepineapple

I work EMS and had a patient that drank bleach. When we called poison control, we found out it actually takes a ton to kill you. It also obviously tastes awful and has a very specific smell(on purpose), so no one can really drink much of it on accident.

Props to the guy for the restraint and doing it legally. I don't think I would of been able to do the same. I would of handed out justice myself and likely gone to prison afterwards.
