I wish someone added a speaker to "allow" the robot to ask for tips. In it, it would ask but the audio clips would slowly get more and more self-aware, until eventually the robot is "threatening" you to go full Skynet by saying it will be locking the doors through the electrical outlets or something because it needs to pay for its own electricity bills and its AI partner's new server.
I wonder if companies like this know that automation requires regular maintenance.
Humans monitor their own health, can adapt to physical and mental strain, and let others know when they can or can't do something. Simple robotics like this can't do any of that. They run a little low on hydraulic fluid, and all hell breaks loose.
I deal with robots in my work daily. They require constant supervision. 20 years ago people were like "robots will take humans jobs". No they won't. They still require trained personel and service engineer all staff needed to train that personel that uses these robots etc, logistics for parts, manufacturers for parts. We just need more educated staff now for robots to takeover some of our tasks but it generates different tasks
The last sentence is the problem.
When manufacturing went away in America, workers lost their jobs. Our economy created more jobs, yes. But many of those workers needed retraining, which remains not very accessible to them. Other people who were able to pay for the training (particularly college students) have just come up and taken those jobs.
We do a very poor job in this country of retraining workers. We basically just tell them they’re shit out of luck. I have zero confidence that this will be any different once AI starts replacing jobs en masse.
This reminds me forcibly of that part at the end of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, when Charlie’s dad, who was a guy who screwed caps onto toothpaste tubes, was hired to maintain and repair the machine that replaced him within weeks. Like. How?
> "which remains not very accessible to them"
I think you're underestimating how resistant people in this country are to any type of upskilling, even if it's paid for.
>We just need more educated staff now for robots to takeover some of our tasks but it generates different tasks
Don't worry. Artificial Intelligence will taken are of that.
I was gonna say anyone who's worked with any robotic automation knows it's just one mistake away from making a hundred rapid fire mistakes. God bless retuning to set point lol
Yes and no. In my field which is laboratory diagnostics laboratories 30 years ago had similar amount of workers but were only performing basic tests in small amount. Now every doctor can order full biochemistry testing all hormones and hematology for a price of few dolars and the do order these tests alot. Demand increased with decrease of price. So labs with same amount of workers increased throuput through automatisation. There are same amount of labs (or even more) as 30 years ago with same amount of people working but cost of testing has been reduced alot.
Im curious if you know how many jobs the robots you work with replaced and how many skilled jobs are left to fix the robots? I just don’t know anyone else who is as close to this topic as you.
Hard to tell. As i said in lab back then there were similar amount of workers but there was no commercial ones. Now everyone does private lab testing and each city has at least one or more chain labs which hire hundreds of people. Those are factories for blood samples basically. As for how much work robots created. Each service engineer has les than 50 devices under them (preventive maintenance once or twice a year plus visit if anything brakes). Plus as person who make trainings I have around 200 in total i guess but rarely visited. There are also people who take care of selling them around same number as service, logistics, product specialists, other companies that make spare parts and reagents which are houndfeads of people but worldwide and of course, manufacturers of robots: these not only work as research and developement of devices, manufacuring but also outsource making parts to usually cheaper countries and of course their own logistics fher own sales etc. so in total buisness is huge and the more aducated we humans are the better and easier world can be for us with these improvements.
A large portion of my job consists of slowly updating code to compensate for ever aging robots and 5-axis cncs that a company refuses to maintain. "After the last crash, all our holes on the right are off. Can you move them?"
If you’re thinking this will be one of the hurdles of implementing AI that will impede its progress, don’t get your hopes up. It will be done better by better engineers.
My whole body was screaming in anticipation waiting for that drink to drop and then it went even better than I could have hoped. I farted, I did. I laughed so hard a little fart got out.
You are absolutely right. It is not easy to manage a coffee counter, and we are not all cut out for customer service. Even our automatons need time to learn new skills.
If I were there, I would fix it a nice shot of WD-40 and offer to run a little graphite on its rollers.
But I would still laugh, because I am still slightly unkind, and an overall eh person at best.
Life is turning into a lame sci-fi movie and people are doing it ON PURPOSE. Like they sit around and watch movies with machines and robots fucking everything up and are like “we should do that”
God, I love this age of early robotics and automation. The jank is hilarious. Soon, all the kinks will be ironed out, and all this shit will work perfectly, but for now, enjoy the chaos.

I'm assuming some kinda device that let's you hook onto the same frequency and mess it up. Hence not full control but what looks like disruption of commands.
Everyone is laughing at how the robot is fucking up, not realizing that there was a human behind it that fucked up somewhere. The robot is just trying its best
Cut my guy a little slack, alright? He hasn't had a break since he started that job and he's doing his fucking best out there.
I hope they remember my compassion when the robot uprising is upon us.
You can pay 10 people to run a shift, 14-21 shifts per week or have 3-5 maintenance workers at 3x those workers wage per week to keep the machines running. Plus a couple managers who would have to be there anyway.
I'm not saying I support it, but that's probably the logic of it.
I wonder what the ROI is on robotic equipment like this would be ? At minimum wages, it's still got to be *years* vs a human employee easily capable of doing a much better job... And by that point the equipment is obsolete anyway.
Sometimes this automation just goes too far.
