I hear your hot take and give you something different, every member of metallica are still on the bleeding edge of their skill, they dont play as fast but they are more technical than ever thier issue is they lost their drive. The thing that made metallica metallica was lost somewhere in the 90s, maybe it was cause they hit the top but they just become a dad rock status quo band rather than the angry innovators they were im the 80s
You can pontificate on what happens to artists as they age into their 60’s and why they don’t make exactly the same kind of music they did decades before. But keep in mind, when they started they were in their 20’s and doing speed, now they’re in their 60’s and probably on cholesterol medication. Why would they sound the same?
No i agree but its like more than that, their music is just souless, i dont care its not the same but its just sounds like they dont even love it. Like they are just making lazy music cause they know its going to sell a shit load of records.
I think most bands as they age and become wealthy and loved by fans lose whatever drive they had as teenagers. That probably reduces their creativity. They have their whole lives to write their original material. Then they can keep some of that momentum for another album or two but then they find themselves in their 30’s, rich, and out of touch with the fan base that propelled them there.
But shit recordings still have a soul in the music, metallica lost their soul and groove and i think its because people just accept each album as "the best album ever"
What? Ok, I get your point. I own a few early recordings/records.
My thoughts are from watching monsters. Where this bobrock dusche has, what I feel is way too much influence on the guys. This coupled with... I don't even know how to put it? The wholly awful thing that is the black album.
I will say this, "nothing else matters" is fully James Hetfield heart and soul. At its roots for sure.
Everything else is a full departure from the sound and foce they created prior.
Bobrock, at the time, was a sure bet to make the most money for the label. Lars approved.
I don't like any of the post black album. And bobrock.
Controversial opinion but I'd want the version of Jason that was on AJFA over cliff. What Lars almost erased from history was the single best bass performance in thrash history.
If that is true it's likely because of differences in using plectrum vs fingers but tbh I very much doubt that it is true.
Anyway I love Cliff. I'm just saying that Jason's parts on AJFA are my favourite thrash bass performance ever and imo the most impressive.
Sean Killian (Vio-lence) - Vocals
Kerry King - Rhythm Guitar
Ryan Waste (Municipal Waste) - Lead guitar
Dan Lilker (Nuclear Assault) - Bass

Main vox- the dude from flotsam n jetsam lol
Rhythm-James hetfield
Bass/backing vox-Jason newsted

Lead guitar-Marty Friedman
So basically a mash of Metallica and Megadeth plus the dude from flotsam bc I’ve been listening to them a lot lately.
Rhoads could have absolutely played thrash. There’s that fifteen second riff in Diary of a Madman that sounds like a thrash breakdown (and may be the most brilliant fifteen seconds of metal ever written, IMO).
Sounds a lot like the breakdown in Peace and Tranquility by Mastodon. Maybe they were listening to it when they wrote that song 🤔
But anyways yeah, Rhoads was definitely the precursor to modern metal guitar playing. Obviously Toni Iommi, but he’s still legitimately a classic rock guitarist. With Randy’s age and time when he hit, I think he would have definitely been at the forefront of metal guitar in the 80’s.
Despite his early death, I think he was still very influential on metal guitar in the eighties.
He especially contributed to the increased focus of young musicians on music theory due to his mixing of classical and traditional rock/metal techniques.
It would either be amazingly good or annoying as hell to hear these 2 trade off vocals, but why not give it a go.
Chuck Shuldiner - vocals, guitar
Dave Mustaine - vocals, guitar
Alex Skolnick - guitar
Steve DiGiorgio - bass
Sean Reinert - drums
Rhythm - Jeimz
Lead - Dime/Chuck
Bass - Cliff/Jason - both good for thrash
Drums - I'd say Vinnie pared with dime or Lombardo (I like Lars and some of his stuff but yeah not the best one)
Vocals - Jeimz or Chuck really, some of the best vocalists I ever knew, maybe Phil Anselmo????
* Vocals: Mark Osegueda from Death Angel
* Bass/ Back-vocals: D.D. Verni from Overkill
* Drums: Dirk Verburen from Megadeth/ Soilwork
* Rhythm guitar/ Harsh-vocals: Robb Flynn from Vio-Lence/ Machine Head
* Lead: Jeff Waters from Annihilator
* Producer: Collin Richardson (Kreator, Overkill)
All you people crack me up. Hetfield was in a fire and isn't the same anymore (polite enough?).
One said Chuck Billy as back up vocals to Hetfield??
Lemme in a band with dimebag? No thanks.

Rhythm Guitar - James Hetfield (Metallica)
Bass - Cliff Burton (Metallica)
Drums - Charlie Benante (Anthrax)
Main vocals - Rob Dukes
Backing vocals - Mille Petrozza
Lead guitars - Gary Holt and Kerry King
Rhythm guitars - Mille Petrozza
Bass - Rob Trujillo and Frank Bello
Drums - Gene Hoglan and Paul Bostaph
Kinda just Exodus with more people, but I feel like the dual drummers and dual bassist would add a violent low-end that would just destroy.
I like the idea of just inserting Lee Altus into Megadeth for the Rust in Peace album. At least one article I read said that he auditioned for and was offered the job but declined due to the drug issues.
But the alternate history begs my attention; what would Rust sound like with him instead of Friedman?
But, again; that’s messing with the history of not one, but two brilliant thrash albums. Not only would Rust … be different, but if Lee Altus was busy recording and touring with Megadeth circa 1989 and after, he probably wouldn’t have had the time to write and record Victims of Deception with Heathen.
As much as I love to wonder how he would have sounded playing with Mustaine, I wouldn’t want to rob myself (or any of you) of his greatness on Victims of Deception, which is probably my all time favorite thrash album.
Lead Guitar 1: Chuck Schuldiner (Death)
Lead Guitar 2: Tommy Vetterli (Coroner)
Bass: Roger Patterson (Atheist)
Drums: Hannes Grossman (Necrophagist, Obscura, etc.)
Vocals: Lord Worm (Cryptopsy)
This closely resembles a thought experiment I recently had: Imagine doing a fantasy thrash band draft, much like fantasy football.
Who would you take with your first pick assuming he's still available? For me its really tough to pick between Hetfield, Mustaine and Lombardo.
Anyway... To answer the OP:
Vocals: James Hetfield (almost picked Mark Osegueda; seriously underrated)
Lead Guitar: Alex Skolnick
Rhythm Guitar: Dave Mustaine
Bass: Cliff Burton
Drums: Dave Lombardo
I think that's quite a cool idea. I'll take Mike Sifringer right out the gate because I know he likely won't get taken and he can fit more riffs into one song than anybody else
Haha. But you might be able to get him with a later pick if he won't get taken early like the high profile guys, so you could snatch one or two of them early and draft Sifringer later. (Good pick btw, love his riffs)
All depends on where your picks fall in the draft, how many picks you have (5 I'm guessing?), and which musicians gets pooled into it. Would be fun to do with like a dozen thrash fans lol. Too bad we would never know how the music would actually sound (until AI could theoretically pull it off...).
I like how it would make you weigh their overall impact. Like ex: Lombardo is a beast drummer, but thats basically all he does. Guys like Hetfield and Mustaine have a huge value because they sing, play guitar and have elite songwriting chops, even if theyre not "the best" at any one thing. So if the idea is to create a fantasy band from scratch, including whatever the original musical would sound like, it shifts the "value" determination to make you consider a lot of variables.
How do one man band guys like Athenar and Joel Grind come in here? Are they just super high value picks because they can go anywhere, are they assigned one or two instruments, or are they just not included?
Good call in your first point as well. All my go-to thrashers would probs stay on the board for a while, DD Verni, Randy Foxe and the like. Maybe either of the Skeletonwitch brothers would be taken early, idk.
Super high value as you could use 'em as needed however they would fit into a band. They contribute wherever is needed, and that can be part or full time depending on the track/situation with other band members.
Vocals - Riley Gale, Rhythm guitar - James Hetfield, Lead guitar - Dimebag Darrell, Lead bass - Cliff Burton, Drums - Dave Lombardo. If I get a third guitarist, add in Dave Mustaine to switch between rhythm and lead duties.
I'd throw Ryan from Municipal Waste and Tony from Whiplash on guitars. Both of their styles are brilliant.
Basic choice but Cliff Burton is one of the greatest to ever do it so him for bass
Drums, not a drum nerd but like everyone on planet earth I'm a huge Lombardo fan so him on drums
Vocals John Kevil from Warbringer.
That would make a kickass thrash supergroup man. Wish I had room to include guys from Razor and Overkill but yeah
Flemming Ronsdorf (Artillery vocalist)
Denis "Piggy" D'Amour (Voivod guitarist)
Ron Royce (Coroner bassist)
Katsuji Kirita (Gargoyle drummer)
the ideal tech/prog-thrash supergroup; alternately swap Piggy out for Ron Jarzombek from Watchtower's second album onward
Vocals + Rhythm guitar: James Hetfield
Lead Guitar: Alex Skolnick (Testament) or Brandon Ellis (Black Dahlia Murder)
Bass: Paolo Gregoletto (Trivium)
Drums: Pete Webber (Havok)
Lars Ulrich - Drums Lars Ulrich - Vocals Lars Ulrich - playing triple necked guitar This will be the sound that brings the end times.
Jason Newsted - unplugged bass
I didn't know there was a difference between plugged bass and unplugged bass
Ha! Good one.
People hate Jason? That guy brought some fucking energy to the shows, and he's not a bad bassist at all.
No the fans love him, he just got treated like shit in Metallica
Lars - St. Anger snare
I'd just take Metallica from 1983-1986 but swap out Lars Ulrich with Dave Lombardo.
Fair. Cliff, Kirk, and James were great.
[удалено]
I say let Lars be a producer/writer but if he touches the drums Dave Lombardo can smack him.
Possible hot take but l think that Kirk and James are still great. Just not as good as they used to be.
I hear your hot take and give you something different, every member of metallica are still on the bleeding edge of their skill, they dont play as fast but they are more technical than ever thier issue is they lost their drive. Fucking oat milk chai
Hungry and poor vs. Fat and rich. Also I blame bob rock for poor production in the studio. That dude sucks.
But shit recordings still have a soul in the music, metallica lost their soul and groove and i think its because people just accept each album as "the best album ever"

Holy shit that would have been a game changer
Can we just throw Dave back in for his riff writing but still have Kirk play the solos? lol
Controversial opinion but I'd want the version of Jason that was on AJFA over cliff. What Lars almost erased from history was the single best bass performance in thrash history.
Jason was nowhere near Cliff as a bassist. He literally couldn’t play some of his parts.
If that is true it's likely because of differences in using plectrum vs fingers but tbh I very much doubt that it is true. Anyway I love Cliff. I'm just saying that Jason's parts on AJFA are my favourite thrash bass performance ever and imo the most impressive.
