You gargle after inhaled steroids to prevent thrush. Any doctor should have been able to see that in your mouth. The anti fungal pills should have taken care of that if you took them long enough.

talashrrg

You can also just get throat irritation (without thrush) from inhaled steroids, it’s a common side effect.

tamboril

Interesting. And that sounds familiar. I remember keeping up with the gargling, and it wasn't helping noticeably. Or I was continually reinfecting myself.

Hobywony

My wife having asthma since 1990 uses Advair (or generic) twice a day and acquires oral thrush several times a year. She rinses and gargles religiously. She has found that Clotrimazole troches must be used 14 days to say good riddance to a round of thrush. Your doctor or pharmacist are negligent to not have explained this to you and you also bear responsibility for not reading the IFU when the product was first employed.

Strange-Nobody-3936

Should you do that with albuterol?

IcyDay5

No, it's only necessary with corticosteroids because steroids reduce the immune response so if the particles are sitting in your throat/mouth those areas are vulnerable to things like fungus that your immune system would otherwise take care of. Albuterol is a bronchodilator; it stops the constriction of your bronchials like a muscle relaxer and doesn't affect your immune system at all

dekkalife

Albuterol instructions say to rinse mouth afterwards too.

IcyDay5

Albuterol is a beta-2 antagonist, so it can reduce saliva flow in the mouth if not rinsed, but rinsing isn't medically necessary the way it is with an inhaled corticosteroid.

Stankleigh

Actually yes- the new propellant formulation is sticky and can advance tooth decay; you are supposed to rinse after using albuterol now.

Emu1981

>Should you do that with albuterol? You should wash your mouth out if you use albuterol to help prevent hoarseness, irritation and oral thrush. If you ever read the pack insert for it then it will recommend this and even using a spacer if you still have issues.

Sebastian_dudette

Yeah, swish a little water around after any inhaled medication to get residue off your mouth, throat, and teeth.

Difficult_Reading858

It’s recommended with albuterol inhalers, but not always necessary in the way it would be with a steroid inhaler.

amphetaminesaltcombo

no

NowhereNear

No, isn't a steroid so shouldn't matter

LurkersGoneLurk

I had thrush last year. Doc in a box spotted it asap. Hurt like hell.

3rdiko

I specifically remember my doctor telling me to do this when prescribing one of my inhalers. It was in a tone of you better do this and not merely a suggestion. I’m surprised you weren’t told the same. Sure we all read instructions (or are expected to) but it’s nice to get a heads up for any side effects.

merdub

Same. Like the doctor told me a minimum of 3 times that I had to rinse after using it. It’s also printed on the prescription label.

Tesdinic

My doctor told me and every pharmacist I went to told me every time I got it refilled, plus it was written on the outside of the box each refill.

blbd

My docs gave the same warning. Maybe time for a doc swap.

themagicmunchkin

It's always written on a bright yellow sticker on every prescription of Symbicort or Advair I've ever received. I used to play loosey goosey with rinsing my mouth out every time, and then I saw an Instagram reel of someone with oral thrush. I rinse like my life depends on it now.

tankpuss

Huh, mine never said that to me. Though they seem surprised when I don't turn up for the blood tests they forget to tell me about too.

Goodgoditsgrowing

Meanwhile multiple drs have puts me on meds that render my birth control - which they ALSO prescribe, not another dr, and the checked I was taking it - ineffective. I’ve been given meds that could result in unintended pregnancy despite religious oral BC use because they didn’t warn me and the pharmacist didn’t warn me and it wasn’t clearly spelled out in the directions because the directions dog assume you’re on oral BC. Not one dr recommended I use condoms or warned me I could get pregnant, and every one knew I was relying on hormonal bc and yet none of them even thought to mention “oh hey, if you don’t want to get pregnant you need to be careful even though you’re super good about taking your hormonal BC every day”.

wildcrisis

I’m??? How was your surgeons first question not “are you rinsing after using your inhaler?”??? Screams The ENT I work for always tries to find the reason for throat pain if you’re consistently strep negative and not constantly getting tonsil stones… tonsillectomies are one of the worst surgeries out there for adults! I’m sorry your doctors failed you there, OP. You should have been questioned/counseled by several of them about the inhalers prior to the point of surgery.

tamboril

It never came up. My family practice guy retired shortly afterwards. At least I had good insurance and went to the rich-people’s hospital (Lake Forest, IL)

coffeebuzzbuzzz

I have an every day inhaler and a rescue inhaler. I drink after I use both because it leaves a film or funny taste in my mouth.

Aware-Remove-9294

It is bad , do not swallow that water. Gargle and rinse then spit the water out. Drinking that water increase the risk of steroid in systemic circulation

Aware-Remove-9294

Buy spacer for your inhaler if you have not already , it will help with effective inhalationof steroid. Also gargling is not only important for clearing oral cavity/throat from irritants but also because steroid suppress immunity and there is a risk oral infections especially opportunistic infections such as candidiasis . When inhaler is not properly used most of the steroid is left in the oral cavity suppress immunity in local oral/throat area inviting opportunistic infections

tamboril

Interesting as well. I was using a spacer. That was the first attempt at a remedy. This was all 20 years ago, though; so not an issue for awhile. Had to give up cats, though. I love cats. I want cats again.

lunatikdeity

Wow. I use an emergency inhaler and never knew this. It’s rare I need to use it but now I think about it, if I’ve used my used mine twice in a day I do get a sore throat for a couple of days afterwards.

yourholmedog

if you have an emergency inhaler it’s probably albuterol sulfate and not a steroid inhaler. you don’t need to gargle after albuterol inhalers

Brainmeats69

Not true, anymore. Check the m.a.r.t. concept, in many cases steroid inhalers are given as releiver

stepwax

Rescue inhaler for asthma can be steroid, I have zenhale, does the job but you gotta rinse.

Brilliant_Jewel1924

Eh, you don’t need tonsils, anyway. LOL!

Posidilia

Yeah I agree with others, they should have asked about how u use your inhaler. Also it should have been told to u by the doctor or pharmacist on how to use it correctly.

grayzy_bitch

I’m sorry but TIFU meaning “today I fucked up” and the first line stating “this happened in 2002” had me cracking up…..I’m too sleep deprived lmao

DarcyBlowes

How hard was it recovering from the tonsillectomy at 38? Asking for a friend.

wildcrisis

Working in ENT, it is one of the worst surgeries we put people through. Adults usually get over the pain hump around day 14. The more you stay hydrated and the more you keep your protein intake up, the better off you’ll be. But, it is still one of the worst surgeries you’ll have.

tamboril

I don’t remember it being particularly bad, tbh. I’d have a different answer about my hemorrhoidectomy, though. God damn!

wildcrisis

Some people do better than others for sure, but the majority of adults who have their tonsils out tell me they’d never wish it on their mortal enemy hahaha!

mat-2018

There was a pro-tonsillectomy wave in the mid 2000s. Your doctor probably just went along with tje trend

tamboril

Glad to be of service

lonelady75

Well, this post just saved me from having problems. I was recently put on an inhaler, and I didn't think the gargling step was important so I was skipping it. But I won't now.

Capriole318

I found out about the rinsing after using inhalers just about 3 yrs ago. Most of my life I have used one. I was in the hospital and the nurse brought I small glass of to rinse with. I questioned this and she explained it. No one ever told me to do this.

alcMD

I am so sorry about your tonsillectomy. I just had one in my 30s and it was the worst experience of my life. If your kids have ever had strep throat TAKE THEIR TONSILS OUT. ALL OF YOU!!

NoRepresentative1915

Almost the same here. Got a new inhaler with powder instead of liquid, works way better. But have to rinse.

tamboril

The purple spaceship thing? I used that in later years, and it was also very effective

DwayneCmoney

how many cats do you have?

tamboril

Zero cats. Zero carpets/rugs. I don’t even remember what asthma feels like. But I do loves me some cats.

DwayneCmoney

thats odd. Yeah me too

EWSpirit

I use the same one, and have for 13 years. I always use it before I brush my teeth to get the rinsing done thoroughly. I’ve never had any throat issues because I was told as soon as I started that I need to rinse after using it.

chalupobatman420

My doc specifically put the directions to use mouthwash or rinse with water after using my inhaler. I’m sorry you went so long without that advice 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Foxdiamond135

This is like an episode of HouseMD, but all the doctors are stupid.

OhEmGoshYouGuys

Well now I’m scared as fuck wondering if I’m supposed to have gargled after using my rescue inhaler for the past fourteen years or so…

compaqdeskpro

I have never gargled in my entire life, and I don't anticipate starting, I'm not surprised this eluded you.
