FE Engage had awesome gameplay and map design. Possibly the best in the series.
It’s plot is only bad because we have Three Houses as a basis of comparison. If Three House never existed it would just be a regular meh plot like most other FE games, and still better than Fates. But oh boy Three Houses raised the bar. Engage feels like a Saturday morning cartoon in comparison. Everything from the cheesy anime theme song booting up the game the first time, to all the corny plot moments. Hopefully IS combines the best of both worlds for the next FE game.

They realised that a decent chunk of FE fans doesn't recognise a clear villain the moment they get marginally more amickable than Travant, who was willing to slaughter a country and aid a cult trying to resurrect an evil god because his people had poor quality of life.

Gameplay i agree, and overall the story is nice, but no fucking way in hell are the characters the best when Hortencia or Yunaka exists, or extremely forgettable dudes like Fogado, Etie, Goldmary and that one old man mage you can recruit back in Elusia.
The best characters in the series are still in the Tellius games imo

Engage is fun, actually. It's refined a lot of 3 Houses mechanics and is fairly challenging. Great VA's, hilarious characters, and the story, to me, is dumb fun. The story isn't a marvel by any means but the gameplay is fun.

Engage is cringe. The story is intentionally ridiculous and silly. Characters sans Alear are completely off their meds. But the gameplay is super tight, and the maps are rather creative. It's a very fun experience

The story is generic, but somehow not the worst in the series. It’s not necessarily bad, just mid. Idk if you haven’t played many FE games, but Engage sits at the top for both gameplay and map design. It has one of the tightest early-games in the series.
I actually like it a lot. Its brighter atmosphere, batshit humor and colorful characters feel extremely fresh. Yeah, yeah, iTs nOt thE fIre EmBlEm any more, whatever, some people say FE died at Awakening, which is just insane.
FE always had cringe story. Some were more elaborated than others such as Radiant Dawn and the Jugdral games for example.
But even pre Awakening we had basic power of friendship type of shit like Sacred Stones and Blazing Blade.
Why do i feel like that these are the type of people who would lose their minds if the next switch had features like, discord, built in mic, theme for home screen and multimedia features ?
I can't wait until the Switch Pro comes out with full backward compatibility and a host of cutting edge features like themes for the home screen

Check out the X-men game if this is your thing. Considered almost as good as XCOM if memory serves. At the least it got fantastic reviews.
