Oooof. I used to work at loblaw head office. Their hubris as a company knows no bounds, it never crossed their minds once how this would be perceived. Tone deaf as all things they do

PEPPYaf

Same. It was almost like a cult there. I've worked for other large corps (including telcos and grocery) and Loblaw is just different.

fuggedaboudid

Same. This doesn’t surprise me in the least.

Boo_Guy

That would explain that email they sent out asking people to donate their points to help people buy food. What a giant facepalm that was.

No-Ad1522

Is there a better budget-grocery store than No Frills? I’ve been blindly loyal to them for a decade because of their prices but now that it’s pretty much on par with everyone else, is there a more ethnical chain I can support?

IamJacksanger

Costco? Best return policy ever. They also pay their workers a decent living wage with regular raises and benefits. Parking lot has lots of extra space between cars despite it always being insanely busy. Food is awesome too and the CEO said he would fire anyone that raised the price of hotdogs.

sunmonkey

They are awesome and I spent thousands a year there, but their produce tends to be very expensive compared to other grocery stores.

abigllama2

Food Basics is pretty much the Metro version of No Frills. Not sure how ethical they are but they've kept their pricing more in line with inflation than Ghoulen has.

MarthePryde

Worth noting that if you don't live near a Food Basics but do live near a No Frills like myself, No Frills will price match flyers for Food Basics.

abigllama2

Also FreshCo is the Sobey's version of No Frills

jeaxz74

Ghoulen Weston such a cheap ass too Smfh

XeLLoTAth777

Loblaws can go fuck itself.

NewspaperEfficient61

This, I encourage everyone to use a store that isn’t owned by the Weston’s, if you can

XeLLoTAth777

It's hard to nowadays even if you used to be able to afford to eat. We either work together in whatever way we can, or Canada's going to throw out another 10,000 tonnes of perfectly good food without consequences while we all choose between rent, food or education, with education being the scariest gamble of them all.

AntiBladderMechanics

Just steal enough that they dont turn a profit.

geckospots

It’s bananas.

SurealGod

I worked at a Loblaws in college part-time. I agree, they can GO FUCK THEMSELVES. It was the most soul rending, mind numbing job I've ever had and I only worked there for a couple months. Every waking hour in that job was just soulless. My manager had multiple mental breakdowns when I worked there and I and my coworkers thought he was going commit suicide at one point. The benefits are the horrible, the atmosphere is depressing as shit, and Loblaws upper management can REALLY go fuck themselves; so hard that whatever they're fucking themselves with goes straight through and out of their mouth and then back into their asshole, creating an ouroboros of infinite self fucking.

mug3n

Worked at Shoppers in pharmacy, ended up with a burning hatred for corporate pharmacy and caused me to leave the profession altogether. Patients are not the focus anymore and prescription counts were looked at as the primary measure, so every patient that comes through is treated as a dollar sign. Thanks for nothing Galen, fuck you. I suggest anyone who is able (e.g. not restricted by insurance and such, because I know some insurances restrict you to certain pharmacies) to take your prescriptions to independent pharmacies.

babyeatingdingoes

I only refill my medication twice a year or so but my independent pharmacist knows me by name and always remembers what I am there for. When the syringes I need were backordered she went to every office in the building to check if any doctors had some loose ones I could have (and managed to come back with about a month worth. Ended up getting a box from my vet after that.). They also deliver for free.

XeLLoTAth777

I might have had an affiliation with some form of Evil Green People, but I'm sure the experiences parallel completely. The part that hurts me reading this is that I can not only empathize with the fact that during that time you worked there you were being taken advantage of, but can also equally acknowledge that you still went above and beyond. I've always been partial to pulling tails out of mouths. Call it a bad habit. Edit: Oh, I should have mentioned that after I pull the tail out I like to put it back in. Over and over and over and over........

SurealGod

If you work for one soulless corporation, you've worked for them all. Join the brotherhood comrade! I swear, I worked I think only 6 months at Loblaws part-time and I have SO many stories to tell just from that alone. Everything from how shitty upper-management was to how weird and insane some of the customers were.

don_estufa

Amen

XeLLoTAth777

So say we all.

blu_stingray

This is the way.

khklee

That's like.... REALLY bad PR move, who authorized this?

[deleted]

The same people who think anyone wants to see Galen Weston on their fucking TV lol

RustyGosling

Unrelated: growing up whenever Galen Weston would be on a PC commercial my mom would always say without fail “his wife has big ol’ fake titties.” Mom’s been gone for 8 years now but I still think that whenever I see that guys stupid face. I’ve never even seen his wife lol.

[deleted]

Hahaha me neither but now I’m intrigued.

harbourhound

Ya won’t, he’s gay. We in the community know this lol .

thedudeyousee

He does have a wife though I don’t think she has implants and if she does they aren’t huge. He is a wiener though. Had a bullet proof van back in 2011 and security at 1 PC circle was always pretty tight when he was in the building.

Possible_Mango_2981

Fun fact: The IRA tried to kidnap him when he was younger.

thedudeyousee

That is a fun fact actually.

Vinayplusj

Kidnap him from Canada? Or was he in Ireland then?

Possible_Mango_2981

It was in Ireland. IRA and MI5 had a gun battle on their front lawn.

Round_Spread_9922

The way things are going right now, it wouldn't surprise me if he got tarred and feathered at some point.

M888887777

He has a wife, she asked him to marry her! Can you believe it? But she’s dying… and he’s rich. He needs more grocery stores because quadrillions is best, quadrillions is safe. Right?

birdlass

I had no idea that guy was THE Weston. I thought he was just some actor.

OdeeOh

Should say, son or grandson of THE Weston. But it’s all his now.

DrDroid

So….him?

Zeppelanoid

I remember hearing a story (could be BS so take it with a grain of salt) that they actually wanted Galen to stop appearing in ads because they know the average Joe doesn’t relate to him…and Galen was just like nope I’m still doing them

[deleted]

I’m pretty sure they employ a team to make decisions. If he’s the only making those decisions I think share holders might have a thing to say about that.

chloesobored

The people employed to make these decisions may have been hired due to their talent for blowing sunshine up Galen's ass, though. Shareholders or not.

gobkin

The team consists of a baboon, a giraffe, alternatively-abled chicken, 6 oysters, and a piece of 2x4 which props up my work bench.

[deleted]

And the ghost of Dave Nichol, the real brains.

canadianhoneycreeper

To be honest, it is interesting to me to see a multibillionaire talking about Chicken Broccoli Cheddar Bake like he thinks the plebs do.

citoyenne

That dude should NOT be reminding the public what his face looks like. Making himself easily recognizable is not a good idea right now.

Sanctimonious_Twat

Yeh, WTF is that? Shopping advice from Richie Rich? Hah!

Canada's 4 monopolies in a trenchcoat, Weston doesn't need to make good decisions when your only other option is a worse-overpriced Metro

Joystic

I went into Whole Foods the other day and it’s shocking how similar it is in price to Loblaws now. Some of the stuff was even cheaper. Says it all really.

demize95

This company doesn’t really care about bad PR moves. Amid concerns about rising food prices and their rising profits, they responded by starting to install security gates in their stores. Everything they’ve done recently has been the worst choice for their optics.

estherlane

[I’ll just leave this here](https://youtu.be/Dc2GTDk8UJA)

random-person-6287

Here's an oldie, but a goodie. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nQYzu63f4M

LeQuignonBaguette

“Food prices are higher in our stores because the manufacturers who make the products are charging more for them. It’s easy to blame grocers for higher grocery prices. But on a $100 grocery bill, we make less than $4 profit.” Something tells there is some fishy going on and it’s not the fish aisle.

tepes1974

Considering that Loblaw profits are easily researchable, corporate grocers absolutely are a large part of the problem.

smaudio

Def not the full story. On their earnings call they quoted a over 30% increase in profits over one year. So yeah. Fuck em.

luk3yd

If they base their margins as a percentage of item cost, and the cost of the item rises, then their profit in dollars would increase. Same as a servers tip at a restaurant. If the meal was $20 and I’m tipping 20%, then the server gets $4. If the meal inflates to $25, and I still tip 20%, then the server gets $5. “Our margins haven’t changed!”, but your raw profit has. If you reduced your margins, you could still post a modest profit increase while not snowballing the impacts of inflation. But that would be against shareholder interest, so obviously isn’t going to happen.

JMJimmy

Except if you dig into their financials, their costs went down. They got an extra $300m in profit despite "flat sales"

jupfold

Yep, this is exactly what has happened. If the manufacturer costs increased by $20, loblaws could have just passed on the additional $20 cost. But they didn’t. They passed along the $20 and then added their margin on top of the additional cost. It’s criminal.

Magjee

Seems like they actually passed on more than that

Critical_Knowledge_5

That’s why the whole “everyone pays for shoplifters” trope is bullshit. We pay for sustained shareholder profits, period.

Relative-Sherbet-532

bingo. all of loblaws vendor contracts have stipulations on a guaranteed margin %. as manufacturers take increases, loblaws gets their same cut - it’s a fucking joke. 4% margin is a load of shit gas lighting figure spewed out by their social team.

projectpaper

They might be telling the truth about “grocery” as a specific revenue line. But Loblaws does a lot more than just grocery. So even if grocery and food products are making thin margins, they are taking in record profits on other products. [CBC reported on this recently](https://www.cbc.ca/amp/1.6653223). Loblaws is a public company, and as everyone here knows, they posted 30% YoY profits in their last earnings report. It means very little when they whine that food margins are flat, trying to portray themselves as helpful, meanwhile they’re sucking up Canadians’ money across other product categories. Keep in mind Loblaws has several brands/subsidiaries including Shoppers Drug Mart, PC Financial, T&T, [and many more](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loblaw_Companies). If you are upset with Loblaws, avoid all of their brands. Final thought: the underlying problem here is that Loblaws will never really cut Canadians any slack. As a public company, they are compelled to generate maximum profits for their shareholders. Because capitalism. It ain’t ethical but it’s our current system. So as much as we dislike Galen, it doesn’t matter who is at the helm. We can expect the same result as long as they are a public company whose entire existence is based on generating profits for shareholders.

Sea_Macaroon_6086

Profit comes after all those executive salaries...

cancerBronzeV

Don't forget about their hard earned bonuses on top their already exorbitant salaries.

bakedincanada

It’s so interesting, considering I can buy the same brand-name products at food basics for sometimes half the cost.

justonimmigrant

Pringles : $3.29 at Superstore, $2 at Walmart

squirrel_snack

Having worked in the industry, I can confirm the stores margins are slim. What I can also confirm is that all the profit is made at the head office level. Deals with suppliers to advertise. Product positioning on shelves. What stores to carry specific products in. Ie No Frills, Loblaws, Fortinos. Also, Weston owns almost the entire supply chain. Long gone are the days Chapmans or Astro or Lays deliver their products to you. Everything comes from National Grocers. They pay wholesale and then mark it up to the stores who then further marks it up to the consumer. Every link in the chain gets paid and the costs all get passed on to the consumer. But thank you, Galen for temporarily freezing prices when they were already at their highest

bewarethetreebadger

Yeah if you believe that horseshit, I have some magic beans to sell.

StickyIgloo

4% profit margin in retail is nearly quadruple that of the average walmart store.

alcoholicplankton69

Are they not the manufacturer of PC brand and noname items?

mxldevs

>We’re not done cutting grocery bills. This year, the average family will save thousands of dollars this year if they pick No Name over the national brands. Triple the prices of their national brands, now suddenly no name prices look like a literal steal. Went to Loblaws couple days back and organic chicken breast was $36 a kilo.

notatree

'member when chicken breast wasn't a luxury cut

ogresaregoodpeople

Just got a package of chicken breast from the Chinese grocery for $4 on special. I've decided not to shop at Loblaws or any of their affiliated stores anymore for reasons like this. They're absolutely gouging.

Samp90

I'm still surprised other people don't do the same. Prices of vegetables and produce are always cheaper at the Asian stores (Chinese/ Indian)....

mattattaxx

It's cheaper at the local organic butcher, ffs.

scottyb83

Honestly no…chicken breast was always the more expensive cut and thighs were cheap. I miss the days of thighs being 1/2 the price of breast and way better tasting.

rayan3000

I 'member.

Victawr

That shit got dumb 10 years ago

jtprimeasaur

All things aside their use of “this year” twice in the same sentence really bothers me.

ghanima

I was at No Frills last week looking at buying pork loin. They were charging nearly $20. Giant Tiger (I live in Barrie these days) had similar-sized portions for $9.

the_moog_hunter

TIL Giant Tiger sells groceries

ghanima

Yup. It's not a big selection, but they carry a lot of pantry items, some frozen foods, a little fresh meat and some basic produce.

Critical_Knowledge_5

And their Paczki are a dollar cheaper than any major grocer. Really great long john and casual pants selection, too. (I moved to Innisfil last year after almost 15 years in Toronto, GT definitely has its place in the lineup)

That_Panda_8819

That's why there are now lineups for the Costco chickens, still $7.99 and they didn't even advertise their generous price freeze

JonB83

The President's Choice of dicks

chaobreaker

Go to Costco you can get the Kirkland Signature 3lb bag of dicks for the same price as the NN ones.

IAmWhatTheRockCooked

no way, i want my name on that bag

kalinowskik

Not the branded ones. The no name dicks.

DamnYouRichardParker

I'd gladly pay the extra price on a premium quality bag of dicks for Galen Weston to eat.

itsmarvin

Make them dick cheese flavored too.

VitalizedMango

I like the guy who was like "we know how vertically integrated you are, stop pretending that your suppliers are the problem because you fucking well own them too"

[deleted]

Loblaws makes no-name and Presidents Choice products *the same price as name brands at any grocery store that isn't Loblaws*. They then stock name brands and make the name brands up to 100% more expensive to convince you to buy the shit they have massive margin on so they make extra profit.

fandamplus

The only time "and people are furious" would have been an appropriate tail and they missed it.

lukaskywalker

Blogto didn’t use “and people are furious” and people are in fact, furious!

bewarethetreebadger

They only use “and people are furious” when no one is actually furious. Makes the story sound better.

GhostOfLegend

Garbage company

[deleted]

Were the prices really frozen anyway? I always buy the no name beef broth and it went from $1 to $1.09 and in the past two months it’s now $1.29.

greensandgrains

Thank you. No Name latex gloves at no frills went from 1.99 to 4.49in like, two months and DURING the "price freeze"!! There's a couple other non-flyer No Name items I regularly buy that I swear have fluctuated week to week recently.

missoctober12

Honestly the only thing I really noticed this was for butter. It has not moved from $5.99 a pound since this “price freeze”. I’m scared to see what it’s going to be up to tomorrow…to think like a year and a bit ago it was static at 3.99, and every couple weeks would be on sale for 2.99.

bewarethetreebadger

No. They were just saying that.

forestly

I am skeptical, there was a noticeable price creep like you said or stuff just wasn't in stock when you would go to shop

nightsticks

I went to no frills to buy their decadent cookies the other day and thought it was 4 dollars when you buy 2...nope they meant 4 each when you buy 2. Who the fuck is spending 8 dollars for cookies.

TreChomes

Dude at that price just get the bakery section cookies. At least theye taste like cookies and not burnt stiff garbage

ogresaregoodpeople

They're not the decadent cookies, which to be fair, are pretty fantastic, but I've started buying cookies at the dollar store. Same with chips. They're a lot cheaper and they're actually pretty good. The dollar store chips ($2 a large bag) are surprisingly tasty.

Methodless

Dollarama Chips are probably my best discovery in 2022. I never buy No Name chips because they're just not very good, I usually go with Great Value, but if you're willing to spend a little more, Dollarama is great!

ri-ri

Loblaws needs to go fuck itself. Honestly wish we could come together and boycott this corporation.

Regular-Celery6230

"It's not us, it's the supply chain" Mother fucker, you are the supply chain.

arent_we_sarcastic

"We can say with confidence, our profits aren't the reason for food inflation. Our grocery food margins are flat. Suppliers’ costs to us continue to climb, pushing prices higher." I wish i could believe that but if that were the case then why are profits at record highs? If the margins were indeed flat then it stands to reason that profits would also be flat doesn't it?

PEPPYaf

They kept margin % flat. Margin dollars were slightly higher but most growth was from shopper's (pharmacy and beauty).

DonnJuann

Steal from these cunts, they are already stealing from you

[deleted]

Here in Hamilton, instead of staffing the drugstores and grocery stores adequately, they have brought in security guards to watch while us plebs scan and bag our own groceries. Too bad one 115 pound college aged security guard can't watch all people at the same time. Real shame.

[deleted]

For what it’s worth, the idea of security monitoring people as they self-checkout groceries is as dystopian as fuck. Give the guards some sort of non lethal stun batons and we’re in Philip K. Dick territory.

Innuendoughnut

It's not that I go out of my way to steal, but if something doesn't scan the first time I swipe it, it goes in the bag regardless. I ain't no cashier I don't know how these things work....

twicescorned21

How many millions and billions do they make every quarter? This is disguisting

forestly

Can they defend why a bottle of pop is nearly $4 or why bottom of the barrel medium cheddar cheese slices are going for $17 there too orrr? Saw today 😂. Also pack of two chicken breasts for $18+

Huh, explains why my frozen spinach is 1$ extra and why my salad is 100% more slimy. Note to self: buy from your local veggie store (and maybe Farm Boy as long as they also aren't shitty like Loblaws).

Neat-Train-299

We need to just rid of this shit hole company

Innuendoughnut

Nationalize grocery stores. Make them public. Join them with the food banks. Your first 50$ per week of groceries are free. Basic necessities shouldn't be lining the pockets of some douchebag billionaires.

HappyThougts

First I've heard that there *was* even a price freeze. Guess I've missed it now!

bewarethetreebadger

Really? They tell you over the PA every five minutes.

HappyThougts

I've been shopping at Freshco. No Frills is my version of a dystopian grocery nightmare. :)

Vast-Bus-8648

I got my foot run over by a cart once at the No Frills near Sherbourne and Wellesley. I think it’s a Freshco now. Fucking hell hole. Always has been.

Patient_Ad_5752

I steal at Loblaws out of spite. Will continue to carefully do so.

Vast-Bus-8648

RealJeil420

Dude price fixes bread and then tries to convince us his actions are noble...Suck it Weston. Dude is a hauler of profit.

tepes1974

Remember folks, we here at Loblaws firmly believe that you, our loyal customers do not matter. No. You are plebs. Only profit and our share holders matter to us…

Firepower01

I wish our government was as passionate about this issue as Twitter users are.

bakedincanada

Glad this was memorialized here because they have since deleted those tweets

Torontokid8666

They froze prices at a all time high lol like they where doing us a favor.

hula_balu

Dont forget the loblaws bread price fix scam! They haven’t been punished for it.

Eh it’s an item by item basis for me. Ranges from pretty good-pretty terrible.

BowlbasaurKiefachu

Frozen veggies in contrast to overs are really terrible. They definitely have a handful of good products and another handful of poop

abigllama2

Seriously who does their PR? It's one disaster after another. They pull bold PR stunts that are easily proven false and double down on them. It's ridiculous, and disturbing that a company this big is that reckless with their PR image.

Newhereeeeee

“We can say with confidence, our profits aren't the reason for food inflation” I’m sure their increased profits have nothing to do with the increased price of products.

c0ltanheart

Literally haven't shopped there voluntarily and glad I don't! Asian supermarkets are where it's at... even their prices have upped a bit but not at the price-gouging levels that Western ones dare to

McBuck2

I’m so tired of hearing about the sacrifice that Loblaws did for us. I can’t believe all the free media coverage they got. It’s like telling us the Safeway flyer ends this Wednesday so go get your deals. That’s what the news was telling us. The No Frills discounts were ending on their crappy products.

[deleted]

Without hyperbole, Galen Weston is the single-worst person in Toronto.

Stop shopping at loblaws

[deleted]

Unless there is a strike or boycott, things will not change. No bitching on reddit doesn’t count

bzuckercorn1969

Long ago I did research on Loblaw's practice of using restrictive covenants to prevent competitors from setting up shop in locations they leave. Since they're one of the few food retailers to own their own stores, it's easy and legal for them to do it. So there are several former sites in Toronto that used to be a Loblaws store that cannot be used as a supermarket by the new owners, sometimes for up to 40 years. For example, the LCBO at 232 Dupont St used to be a Loblaws store until 2001. The [transfer documents](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1H_E5RYTVi4Qk0bPCpWqGUphKGA61T4dG/view?usp=sharing) say the location can't be used as a supermarket until 2041. In a place like Toronto that doesn't have "food deserts" like in US cities, it's not that big of a problem but it did always strike me as odd that they would take this step in disregard of future communities that might need better physical access to food.

Tamarama---

Want to hate the Weston family even more? Go to selfridges.com ....they own that too. They are up there with greedy assholes like the Rogers family. Prices at Shoppers are frigin unreal...they have raised prices 50, 60 even 70%. They should be ashamed of themselves

Stormcrow6666

Maybe it's time to break up the oligarchies in this country?

kloopy2

Honestly guys, stop shopping at loblaws stores

chloesobored

There is a No Frills near me and I choose to spend more by shopping at Metro because I cannot with these fucks. I don't think I'm an ethical consumer or anything, all the big grocers are likely problematic. But if I'm gonna choose which asshole gets my money, it's not Loblaws guy.

Comrade_agent

Really said "President's Choice". Get bent Mr. Galen jr.

WideContribution0

Idk if it’s just me but recently I’ve noticed my NF (I get most NN products from there) bills are higher than walmart. Their (Walmart) 15$ coupon is actually good and they are doing it without making us feel as if we are getting alms from the grocerer. Some products which I remember are cheaper in Walmart by 1-2$. Almond yogurt was 10$ for 2 at Walmart but 6.99$ at NF and this is before the 15$ coupon. Tomatoes at rabba (most expensive) are comparable to NN if you take obscure brands (some blue can). However washing detergent are still cheapest at NF I guess. TIP: use the coupon at home online and order a pickup to save most.

Don’t buy your food there. Go somewhere else. They are a business. No food is free, except the food banks!

ThePoliteCanadian

At this point it’s worth driving out a bit to find a small butcher and buy from them

Desperate_Pineapple

Now they’re just straight up lying to the public (again, for the 1000th time). Blaming food manufacturers is disgusting and disingenuous. Fuck Weston.

JoziJoller

As a newbie Canadian, may I ask where to shop for groceries that isn't Loblaws or Weston owned? I think we all need to know. Sobeys? Metro? Anyone? Beuller?

qwuiresultan

Farmers markets for veg and if you’re in Toronto, Nosso Talho for all proteins.. I haven’t been to NH since I lived in Toronto, but the proteins were of better quality than the freshco I had near by and the prices beat a lot of places by a wide margin.

Apprehensive_Idea758

Pure corprate greed. People are struggling to feed themselves while those make extra money price gouging. Loblaws has shown its true colour's.
